Chamber’s 15th Annual Golf Classic a Success On September 28 over 100 golfers took to the links for the Chamber’s 15th Annual Golf Classic at Eagle’s Landing Country Club. The course was filled as every hole had at least one sponsor set up to interact and network with the golfers. We would like to thank all our Chamber Ambassadors who volunteered to work the event. We could not hold the Golf Classic each year without our great group of volunteers.

Message from the Chair June Wood
Together…Let’s Give Thanks to Each Other
This is a wonderful time of year! The foliage begins to provide great fall color, arrangements begin for the Holidays, and we think more about family and friends…giving thanks. What better way to kick off the Holidays than by patronizing your family and friends…as a way to say thanks. We have wonderful Henry County Chamber of Commerce Businesses and Partners that you may use as caterers, fine dining and restaurants. We have awesome chamber partners for landscaping, heating & air conditioning and other household needs. I look forward to the holiday entertainment options for family and friends here in Henry County such as the AMS Holiday Lights, the holiday events and parades in Hampton, Locust Grove, McDonough and Stockbridge. Of course, the shopping…the shopping…the shopping. We are very fortunate to have Tanger Factory Outlet Center in our community, SouthPoint Mall, Henry Town Center on Jonesboro Road and of course our local stores and shops all around Henry County. While we are shopping and patronizing over 700 of the Henry County Chamber Businesses, let’s say “THANK YOU” for being a Henry County Chamber Member and for being a part of our community. Let’s say “THANK YOU” for the services that they offer so that we can shop locally. Let’s say “THANK YOU” for the great people who make it a pleasure to do business right here at home. Let’s say “THANK YOU” for Making Henry Better.

Common Business Mistake No. 1:
Lack of Focus by Alisa Kirk
When my son was little, I walked by the open bathroom door to see him apparently talking to the toilet. I quietly walked closer just in time to see him throw a scrap of toilet paper into the toilet and say, “Here, hold on to this. It’ll save you.” I discovered a bug in the toilet, swimming for all it was worth, trying to crawl up on the toilet paper. Each time the bug succeeded on crawling up on the paper, the paper disintegrated and the bug was in the water again. Every once in a while, I’ll talk to a small business owner who reminds me of that story. There’s no real plan for running and growing the business, just reaction to events as they unfold. “Here, hold on to this…” Their marketing attempts are another example: “Here, let’s try this…” Whenever I’m asked about the biggest
problem small business owners face, I usually include “Lack of Focus” in the mix. Gaining focus starts with defining your vision for the business in specific terms. What exactly do you want to accomplish with this business? If this business was a trip, where would you be going? If you have a well-defined vision, you can self-correct when you get off track. You can ask yourself when making decisions (about marketing, for example), “Will this get me there?” After defining the vision, develop a plan for getting there. There will be short-term, immediate result strategies and long-term strategies that will be adjusted as you go along. That’s where the Small Business Development Center comes in. We can help with your strategies for growth so that you can maintain that laser focus on where you want to be.

Leadership Henry’s County Day September’s program for Leadership Henry was “County Day,” and the class spent the day learning about some of the things that make Henry County unique. The morning started with a bus tour led by Henry County Historian Gene Morris who shared about Henry County’s past as the “Mother of all Counties.” The tour and topics spanned from one end of the county to the other, with plenty of story-telling along the way.
a history of Locust Grove and an overview of some of the City’s recent and upcoming projects before leading them upstairs to the auditorium. City Hall was originally the Locust Grove Institute, a school dating back to the late 1800’s, and the auditorium has been newly renovated for community use – a perfect place to hold our Energy Bus session!
Next, the class headed to Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton where they were given a tour of the track facilities. Their visit concluded with a “quick” trip around the track and photos with the pace car.
The last stop of the day was Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Locust Grove, where the class got a behind-the-scenes tour of this unique Henry County attraction. Home to more than 1,500 exotic, wildlife, and domestic animals; Noah’s Ark is certainly one of the many things that make Henry County unique.
The class had a great lunch compliments of South Side Diner in McDonough, then it was back on the bus for a trip to Locust Grove City Hall. Ms. Ludy McIntyre gave the class
It was a busy day for the class, but it always ranks as one of the most fun and entertaining programs this year. Next month...Public Safety Day!

Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2016 gets off to a great start The Youth Leadership Henry Board of Directors met the members of the Class of 2015 at their evening reception on Tuesday September 29, at the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service at Heritage Park.
our board member Coreda Shaw. One of our alumna from last year’s program, Miss Brandi Dixon, shared with the class her suggestions for how to get the most out of their participation in the class.
After an opportunity to meet and mingle over a delicious selection of hors d’oeuvres, the class and their parents learned about the “nuts and bolts” of the program. They heard a little overview of each class meeting which involves teambuilding, public safety, education, healthcare, state government, and county history; then discussed how the class will give back by doing a service project for the community. This year they will be hosting a community-wide youth job fair on March 14, 2016.
Our keynote speaker was Brian Strickland, a lifelong Henry Countian whose family has deep roots here. Strickland shared a little about his life and commitment to our community. His description of the positives that come from living a life of hard work, ethics and character were illuminating to those in attendance. A successful young attorney who is currently also representing House District 111 in the Georgia General Assembly, Strickland showed and challenged these young people to become servant leaders in our community themselves.
The class and their parents received valuable information about post-secondary planning from
The class had their Teambuilding day on October
12, taking advantage of the day off from school for the Professional Development day. They had the opportunity to get to know each other very well by working together on a variety of teambuilding activities at Camp Fortson. They were excited about all the activities, especially the wall climbing and zipline. They started the day as a collection of individuals, and returned as a team, who had started building relationships with other aspiring leaders in the community. If you want to keep up with class events and programs, we encourage you to “like” the Youth Leadership Henry facebook page and follow us on Twitter @YLHenry. After each class meeting pictures and video are posted so you can see what these young leaders are learning.

“sidelines” – Some people get so frustrated over market volatility that they throw up their hands and head to the investment “sidelines” until “things calm down.” And it’s certainly true that, when owning stocks, there are no guarantees; you do risk losing some, or all, of your investment. But if you jump in and out of the market to “escape“ volatility, you may take on an even bigger risk – the risk of losing some of the growth you’ll need to reach your goals. Consider this: If you had invested $10,000 in a package of stocks mimicking the S&P 500 in December 1979, your investment would have grown to more than $426,000 by December 2013. But if you had missed just the

The bottom line? Staying invested over the long term can pay off. (Keep in mind, though, that the S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and isn’t meant to depict an actual investment. Also, as you’ve no doubt heard, past performance is not a guarantee of future results.) Our emotions are useful in guiding us through many aspects of our lives, but when you invest, you’re better off using your head – and not your heart.
