Gratitude is an amazing source of fuel in the workplace. Studies have shown that when people feel appreciated for their personal contributions, supportive behavior is twice as likely to reoccur. This triggers a cycle of feeling valued and boosting performance. Conversely, feeling unappreciated and undervalued is the number one reason people quit their jobs. So how can you create a culture of gratitude in your organization? Here are three ways to show your appreciation: 1. Say “thank you” privately and publicly. A private thank you is a direct exchange between you and
the individual or group. Your acknowledgement should be for the specific task(s) that they’ve done instead of general praise. Also, thank them right after the task was completed. When you repeat your thanks and praise publicly, your team will perceive it to be more genuine and meaningful because it will not be the first time that they’ve heard it. 2. Invest in your employees’ professional development. A 2012 study conducted by the American Psychological Association found that 70% of employees associate being valued with opportunities for growth and development. Workshops, webinars, shadowing, crosstraining, and participation on projects that enable employees to hone and utilize untapped skill sets are all ways to engage your people. Offering development opportunities also shows that you value
them enough to make an investment that makes them and the organization better. 3. Invest in your team’s mental health. It may seem counter-productive, but saying ‘thank you’ with time off and a trip to the spa for a massage can go much further than a pat on the back. If your people put in long hours, take on additional responsibilities, and sacrifice work-life balance sometimes just to go the extra-mile for your customers- then certainly you can go an extra mile for your employees. Give an unexpected ‘staycation’ to a deserving team member, complete with an overnight hotel stay, movie tickets, and gift card to their favorite restaurant. You’d be surprised how much a gesture like this can say. The absence of gratitude or appreciation in the workplace fuels resentment and apathy, which leads to team dysfunction and underperformance. If you want to increase retention, focus, synergy, and performance in your workplace, then cultivate gratitude daily in ways that resonate individually and collectively with your employees. To learn more about how you can develop your organization, contact us at morrow@georgiasbdc.org, or call 678-466-5100.

Ms. Pearson also advised the group to take advantage of Georgia’s Camera Ready program, a free service that provides trained liaisons to help filmmakers with scouting, permitting and other production needs in over 159 counties, and connect with their local Camera Ready Liaison, Henry County CVB’s own, Laura Luker, Director of Tourism. Members took the opportunity to ask questions, on issues from contacting the right person to film distribution and supplying movie and film sets with resources. The successful luncheon was a reminder of the many areas in which Henry County is partnering with other organizations to make tangible improvements for businesses in the area.

2015 MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN
The 2015 Henry County Chamber of Commerce Membership Campaign started on Wednesday, September 23 and will run through the month of October. The Campaign is put on by the Chamber Membership Committee led by Membership Chair Steve Nail, from Nail Heating & Air, and Ambassador Chair Genie Griffin, from Zoom 105.9 FM. The Campaign consists of 5 teams with 5 members each, who will bring in new Chamber members during the month of October. This year’s Team Captains are: Greg Guy from Goodyear Aviation, Shane Persaud from Communities in Schools, John Newman from Classic Landscapes, Josh Duncan from Edward Jones Investments and James Chapman from Chapman Insurance Group.
The Campaign Kick-Off lunch was held on September 15 and was hosted by Deep South Deli & Pub in McDonough. During the Meeting Steve Nail challenged the teams to reach the goal of 50 new members during the campaign. Genie Griffin then addressed the teams about some key Chamber benefits and incentives to mention to potential members. June Wood, this year’s Chair of the Board of the Chamber and herself a team member, recognized the other Board members that are participating, stressing that the campaign has the full support of this year’s Board of Directors. There will be some good, fun competition between this year’s teams. The winners will be announced at the Chamber’s Member Appreciation Lunch on October 30.

Kicking off another great year of Leadership Henry
The next class of Leadership Henry held their kickoff luncheon on Tuesday, August 19 at the Chamber of Commerce. The 34 new class members and board of directors enjoyed a barbeque lunch provided by Shane’s Rib Shack. David Gill, President and CEO of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, shared the importance of participation in the program and its impact on the future of Henry County. Members of the Leadership Henry board also provided information on the upcoming class year. The 2015-2016 Leadership Henry class got off to a roaring start, attending their overnight retreat at Camp Twin Lakes on September 10-11. Activities focused on networking, leadership, and personal development. Their first official class “County Day” was held on Wednesday, September 16 where they learned about the history and unique characteristics of Henry County.
Leadership Henry Goes Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Members of the Leadership Henry Board of Directors wore gold for their September board meeting to show their support for Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Over 400 children are newly diagnosed with cancer each year at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – that’s at least one family from metro Atlanta that receives this devastating news each day – yet only 2% of federal funding goes to childhood cancer research. FINANCIAL FOCUS Best Response to Volatile Markets? Stay Calm In recent months, stocks have fallen sharply from their record highs, with one-day drops that can rightfully be called “dizzying.” As an investor, what are you to make of this volatility?

For one thing, you’ll find it useful to know the probable causes of the market gyrations. Most experts cite global fears about China’s economic slowdown, falling oil prices and anticipation of a move by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates as the key factors behind the stock market’s decline. On the other hand, the U.S. economy is still doing fairly well. Employers are adding jobs at a pretty good clip, wages are rising, home prices are up and overall economic growth has been reasonably solid. In other
words, we are in a vastly better place than in the period before the Great Recession of 2008 and early 2009, when the financial markets bottomed out. Nonetheless, it’s only natural that you might feel some trepidation over what’s been happening in the financial markets over the past few weeks. So, what should you do? Here are a few suggestions:
• Expect more of the same. Be prepared for more volatility, potentially including big drops one day followed by big gains the next. Until the factors considered responsible for the current volatility – that is, China’s slowing economy, low oil prices and the Federal Reserve’s decision on rates – have been fully absorbed into the market’s pricing mechanisms, big price

Markets Change. Are you Prepared? When you stop and look back at what’s happened in the markets, it’s easy to realize how quickly things can change. investment strategy, even in the face of wild fluctuations in the financial markets. Still, it’s always a good idea to review your strategy at least once a year, possibly in consultation with a financial professional. You may need to make smallerscale adjustments in response to changes in the economy, interest rates, and so on, but don’t abandon your core principles, such as maintaining a portfolio that reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Investing will never be either risk-free or predictable. But by taking the steps described above, you can relieve some of the stress associated with volatility and help yourself stay on track toward yourfinancial objectives.
