Exciting Times in Henry County Schools It is the start of another school year in Henry County, and believe it or not, kids love going to school. It may not sound like it when they have to get up in the morning, but they do enjoy it. And to be honest, what’s not to love? You have growth opportunities, social time with friends on a daily basis, and a cadre of adults who truly care about your wellbeing and development as a person. And as we all remember, the first day and By JD Hardin, Director, first few weeks of school bring even greater Communications & Public excitement as we welcome the start of anRelations, Henry County Schools other year and all the newness that it brings. New classes, new teachers, new subjects, new school attire, and even new friends. Those things make getting up early in the morning – a stark shift from our summer routines – a little bit easier. School and district officials have been working since before the summer began to prepare for the first day of school on August 1, and the district is excited to introduce a few new items. Of note, there are two brand new schools opening to students. McDonough High School and McDonough Middle School are opening their doors for the first time. Each school is a replacement school for the former Henry County High School and Henry County Middle School. Thanks to E-SPLOST voters in 2016, these two schools are allowing the same students from HCHS and HCMS to attend school right across from each other like the majority of our high schools and middle schools. The buildings they leave behind will be repurposed to support student learning and district administrators. The former high school will now be completely dedicated to the Academy for Advanced Studies, the district’s college and career academy. The middle school will be converted into administrative office space for district officials. You might also see some big green ‘birds’ on the road this school year. That’s because Henry County Schools now has 23 brand new Blue Bird buses fueled by propane to provide environmentally friendly, or green transportation to students across the district. The buses are still yellow, but the clean fuel transports will sport a green bird instead of their customary blue bird logo. The buses will give the district its first set of regular buses with air conditioning, while adding new buses to the special needs transportation fleet that already has air conditioning on them. Safety and security upgrades have been implemented in the county as well. All high schools will now have single-point entry access like their elementary and middle school counterparts. This was a suggestion from members of the community, and the construction of these added safety measures has been completed. The Henry County Board of Education was responsible for approving the aforementioned new items, and several other actions taken this

past school year to set the 2019-2020 school year up to be one of the best ever. Thanks to their support, district employees received salary increases this year, which ensures our employees are competitively paid to perform one of the most important jobs in our country, teaching children. And to help teach at the highest levels, they will also have new core content instructional resources and materials after the board approved this recommendation. Early learning models that were piloted with success this past year will now be implemented in all elementary schools. This effort will have a continued ripple effect to maintain the highest levels of learning for our students as they enter and progress through our school system. It is an exciting time to be a part of Henry County Schools! We are on the ambitious pursuit of becoming the fastest improving and highest achieving school district in the metro Atlanta region while prioritizing and being known for student connectivity and belief in student capability. Parent and community support is vital to helping us achieve these goals. We look forward to an exceptional school year in Henry County, and we cannot wait to get started! #ExpectExceptionalHCS

Our Chamber… Expanding the Possibilities As I’m writing this, I’m preparing to attend one of my favorite events sponsored by the Chamber—the annual Teachers Induction Program Luncheon. This is an event organized by the Education Committee under the Chamber. They work along with Phyllis Reeves to secure sponsors, gather donations and organize volunteers to stuff bags. We had the daunting task this year to prepare for approximately 475 teachers. Not only did the Chamber partners rise to the occasion but we had a hard time closing the bags because the supplies were so abundant. This is a great example of what can be accomplished when we have a collaborative effort between our school system and the business community. The mission statement of the chamber is “To serve as a voice for the business community, provide quality service and programs that meet the needs of members, improve the economic environment of the community and create a legacy of leadership for the future.” We believe having a solid relationship with our local school systems, both public and private, helps to improve our local economic environment. I am so proud of the great strides our

Education Committee has made this year. They have taken on the charge of expanding their footprint outside of their two major events, TIP Luncheon and STAR Student Breakfast. Throughout the year the education Committee ensured that we secured Chamber partners for the mock interviews and job fairs that were held throughout the county. Under the leadership of Dr. Elna Poulard the committee is constantly looking for new opportunities to provide support for schools and other organizations. However, the Education Committee is one of many hard-working committees that we have at the Chamber. There is no way we could accomplish all that we do

without our committed volunteers. The committee we refer to as “The Face of the Chamber” is our Business Ambassadors. The Ambassadors promote and represent the Chamber at key events such as the Golf Classic, Chamber visits and ribbon cuttings. The Golf Committee is responsible for the planning, development and organization of our annual Golf Classic. With part of the mission of the Chamber being to serve as the voice of the business community, very often that means having a strong relationship with our political leaders. So our Government Affairs Committee helps develop partnerships with federal, state and local government agencies

and key elected officials to assure access and positive impact of public policy on key business and community issues. Our Membership Committee oversees membership recruitment and retention. The Small Business Council tries to understand the needs of small business, the current status of this business community and ensure the Chamber is focused on the priorities associated with the needs of these businesses. The Small Business Council has also taken on the task to organize our annual Women’s Empowerment Summit. And finally, our newly formed committee is the Communications Strategy & Planning Committee. This committee has accepted the challenge to develop methods to analyze the effectiveness of the current programs of the Chamber and through analytics help to shape the direction of the chamber. As Chamber members we would love for you to get involved in any of these active committees. These hardworking committees, along with the Chamber staff and Board of Directors help to ensure that we can complete tasks and organize quality programs in a spirit of excellence. Together we can continue…Expanding the Possibilities.

As a hard driving General Contractor superintendent, David White built 28 CVS Pharmacies in as many different towns and cities over a stretch of ten years. Each CVS store took 6 – 8 months to build. When it was time to build another one, David and his wife Johnette would move with the job. David was committed to his work. Life was good and he enjoyed the steady employment. The only drawback was having to move so often. “It was especially hard on my wife, David admits. “We had sold our home in Grayson (GA) and always lived in rental properties so we could be near the job sites. We moved too often to put down any roots.”

He continuously reminded his boss that he wanted to go home. But the next job sent him to Florida, and next to Maryland. By then, David was looking at starting his own business, maybe buying a franchise somewhere in Georgia. One day, while he and Johnette were out scouting for a place to live for the new build in Maryland, he spotted a line of people outside of a Red Wing shoe store waiting for it to open. Intrigued, he decided to go in and buy a new pair of work boots and struck up a conversation with the guy who owned the place. Then life took another turn.

Don Miller (seated), a retired Red Wing corporate store manager now working part-time for David in McDonough, helps a customer while David assists and Ron Fields, another retiree working part-time looks on. The owner, a former CVS pharmacist by coincidence, told David that buying a Red Wing store was the best decision he’d ever made. He informed David that Red Wing was expanding and encouraged him to investigate it. Which he did. Red Wing gave David options for several locations in their expansion plans, but he insisted on stores in Georgia only. To his surprise, the next store opening in Georgia was in McDonough and the rest is history. David opened the McDonough location in May, of 2013 and now has a second store in Conyers. Then life on the road took a turn. In Tupelo, MS, there for another CVS contract, David suffered a heart attack. Through the recuperation, with Johnette by his side, David got well and finished the job in Tupelo. But a new mindset had formed, and David began looking at ways that would get himself and Johnette off the road and back home. Having been raised in the Fairview area of Henry County, where he attended Stockbridge High School, at this point in his life, David would settle for home to be “anywhere in Georgia.”

Chamber Involvement David joined the Henry County Chamber when he opened his first Red Wing in McDonough in 2013. Initially, he took advantage of the new business mentoring program that the Chamber offered and attended networking meetings. “Every time I’ve gone to a Chamber event, I made a contact that turned into business for me,” David stated. “I read the Chamber’s monthly newsletter and the weekly email to keep up with what’s going on in the business community.”

What makes an entrepreneur unique? Do you have what it takes to be successful? Common characteristics of inventors, business tycoons and entrepreneurs are passion, high energy, sponge-like nature, resourcefulness, open mindedness and perseverance. Entrepreneurs were born to change the world one idea, or more, at a time. Their characteristics are contagious and inspiring. Some of the best leaders and entrepreneurs all have passion and energy. Many are motivated by promoting and formulating their ideas. Entrepreneurs think in terms of adding value to the consumer. What can be invented that will change how society functions? Passion is a wonderful feature to possess. It is the energy boost that entrepreneurs use to sell people on ideas, products and services. When someone has passion, a high dose of energy usually follows. Perseverance is another respectful trait. Without perseverance, Thomas Edison would have given up on the

light bulb. He failed over 1000 times or maybe it was a 1000 step process. I guess it depends on how you look at it. The mind of an entrepreneur is open, resourceful and inquisitive. I had a college professor who thought over analysis equals paralysis. This is not true for an entrepreneur. Many creative minds simply cover all areas of resources and processes. They look at what products, ideas and services are currently needed in society. They find a need then fill it. All rocks or ideas are turned, repositioned and flipped when identifying new opportunities. In closing, being an entrepreneur is simply finding ideas and needs while adding consumer value. Customers will buy products that improves their quality of life. So, do not get frustrated when the first idea does not work. Remember Thomas Edison and keep the passion and energy flowing. CHAMBER BRIEFS CENTRAL GEORGIA EMC FOUNDATION AWARDS $2,500 GRANT

EARNS GMA CERTIFICATE OF DISTINCTION

Jackson, GA (July 24, 2019) Henry County Cancer Services, Inc. (HCCS) received a grant for $2,500 from the Central Georgia EMC Foundation to help fund medication for cancer patients. “We are here to help Henry County residents that are struggling with a cancer diagnosis,” said HCCS President Joane Whitson. “The various medications taken by a cancer patient are the greatest expense. Thanks to the generosity of Operation Round Up participants, we are able to provide help with purchasing that medication.” The mission of HCCS is to assist individuals struggling from the effects of cancer and to assist them at their point of need. The organization believes that cancer patients should not have to worry about missing treatment due to lack of funds. All funds raised are used to provide medication, medical co-pays, wigs, and nutritional supplements. Central Georgia EMC Membership Corporation customer-owners who participate in the Operation Round Up® program voluntarily elect to have their electric bills rounded up to the next dollar. The donated amount averages about 50 cents per month for each participating

customer-owner. The Central Georgia EMC Foundation Board of Directors then distributes the funds to qualifying charities in the CGEMC community. The CGEMC Foundation is accepting applications, which are available online at www.cgemc.com or can be picked up in person at the CGEMC office at 923 S. Mulberry St. in Jackson. Any eligible organizations seeking assistance in CGEMC’s 14-county service territory are encouraged to apply.

With the end of summer comes the end of summer interns in offices everywhere. This upcoming Fall, the Henry County Chamber will say so long to two amazing interns; Kelli Crews and Ukari Roberts. Over the past year, the two student interns have contributed tremendously in helping the Chamber.

STOCKBRIDGE — Neat Robinson, Stockbridge city councilwoman, received the Certificate of Distinction award from the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute during the Georgia Municipal Association’s annual convention last month. Robinson was one of eight city officials in the state to receive the certificate of distinction at the conference. To receive a certificate of distinction, a city official must complete a minimum of 204 hours of credit, including at least 72 hours from a required list of courses at the Robert E. Knox Municipal Leadership Institute. The training program consists of a series of more than 60 courses. The Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute, which is a cooperative effort of GMA and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia, provides a nationally recognized series of training opportunities for elected officials.

Kelli Crews, a graduate of Eagles Landing Christian Academy, joined the chamber as an intern over the summer prior to starting as a Freshman at The University of Georgia in Athens in early July. Ukari Roberts joined the Chamber as a Senior at Stockbridge High School at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year as part of the Henry County Schools Work Based Learning program. Ukari begins at Georgia State as a Freshman later this month in August. As student interns, they both were tasked with creating and posting ribbon cuttings, scheduling social media posts, as well as writing for and compiling editorial materials for the weekly E-News and the monthly henrycounty.com newsletter.

As a part of Education Day, the LH Class of 2018 visited Rock Springs Elementary where they learned how the school has implemented personalized learning, an approach to education that allows students to learn at their own pace through a variety of methods. Lindsey Orthodontics in Locust Grove, teamed with their staff from Griffin, treated the Chamber to a very elegant Business After Hours affair on June 27. The owner, Charles A. Lindsey, DMD, and his wife Shea expressed their pride at the end results created by their son Zeb, the interior decorator of the office’s upscale décor, and the exemplary effort made by their staff to make this Business After Hours a stellar event. The spacious floor plan provided ample room for the large turnout with tours of the facility and desserts, beverages and swag stations strategically located to guide the flow from the front office to the clinical spaces in the back. Everyone was able to get a taste of the friendly service and care that every Lindsey customer receives upon every visit and to appreciate the beautiful décor. Additional customer amenities included the built-in gaming wait area for youth and the H2 Hummer Brace Bus outside on display. The HCCC Jackpot increased to $150 for the next BAH as none of the names drawn were present to win.

The annual Teacher Induction Program, fondly known by its acronym, “TIP,” has a new name — “Educator Launch.” Henry County Schools leadership rolled out the new title at the annual luncheon held on Friday, July 19, for over 450 teachers joining HCS in the 2019-2020 school year. The event is held each year in climax to a week of training and orientation for all teachers new to HCS. The Henry County Chamber of Commerce continued the annual TIP tradition as the sponsor and organizer of gift bags filled with school supplies for each new educator. HCCC invites member businesses to join the effort as sponsors of the gift bags and to donate school supplies. The sponsors look forward to helping the Chamber to stuff the bags and then hand deliver them at the annual Educator Launch luncheon. The event is topped off by a raffle of prizes including cash in many cases to teachers holding winning numbers.

The June Business Booster Luncheon was a sold-out event filled with energetic networking between business professionals. A great meal was provided by Cowboy Chicken. We had the opportunity to hear from our event sponsor, Takle Eye Group. Representing the group was Dr. Benjamin Baumrind M.D of Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Retinal Surgeon. He shared details with us about their facilities located in Griffin and Locust Grove and the services they provide at each.

Speaker: Priti Griffin, Founder / Executive Director Raise Me Up Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization formed out of a passion to help the community create a safe and healthy environment for children to grow. Their mission is to provide awareness, education, and resources to all adults and not just parents. Priti Griffin is the Founder and Executive Director for Raise Me Up Foundation. She will join the Chamber for the August Business Booster Luncheon and share details about Cyber Safety, Child Pornography and Sex Trafficking. A horrific subject matter, but awareness is crucial when it comes to protecting our children. Learn how you as a parent can keep your child safe. How you as a community leader can recognize situations that just don’t seem right. Learn the actions you should take in the case of an unsavory situation being presented to you.
