MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

JUNE WOO OOD D Sharon Ponder Vice President of Finance at the Bennett International Group 2019 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

Our Chamber… Expanding the Possibilities Well I can’t believe that 2020 is upon us. It seems like yesterday I was standing at the podium at our Annual Banquet accepting the Chairperson gavel from Wayne Lowrey. But although this year has turned out to be one full of events – as I reflect back on the accomplishments of the Chamber it makes all of the hard work well worth it. We started off the year finding our selves in a precarious position of having to replace our President and CEO David Gill. We knew that this would be a daunting task because David had been such a rock to the chamber for many years. We knew that the relationships and connections that he had would take a lifetime to develop but we were able to engage a search firm that would assist us in finding our next CEO. Joe Henning started at the Henry County Chamber in late May and we have been off to the races ever since. One of the tasks that I wanted to accomplish during my tenure was to ensure that our membership receives added value as a

result of being a member of the chamber. But we decided it wasn’t up to us (the Board of Directors) to determine what equates to added value; we need to ask our partners. So shortly after Joe arrived, he along with his staff, administered a survey to our membership. Joe was able to analyze the data accumulated from the survey to help us determine and prioritize the needs, wants and issues of the chamber membership. This very insightful data has become the source document that we have used and are using in developing programming and action plans for the Chamber. One of the data points gathered from the survey is that members wanted more access to business development training. The Chamber was able to reestablish relationships with the Clayton State College SBDC as well as SCORE to offer free one on one sessions for both members and nonmembers. Reestablishing that relationship with SCORE has given SCORE a South Metro presence that has long been missing. This was evident with available

appointments filling up days prior to their arrival. And the very first time we had a SBDC representative at our location we had a young lady waiting at the door for us to open. During the second set of counseling sessions with the SBDC our requested counseling sessions more than doubled. Again, we are listening to our members and adding services that they need and want. We also accepted the challenge of advocating for SPLOST V. The mission of the Chamber is to be the voice of the business community - and in listening to our business partners we overwhelmingly voted in favor to advocate for the passing of SPLOST V to keep progress moving forward in Henry County. So, we set out to attend community meetings, political forums, placing signage, producing infographic flyers and videos, as well as hiring mobile billboards to get the word out about SPLOST V. All of this hard work culminated with a near 54% passage. All of these additional major

projects have been accomplished in conjunction with all of our other traditional programs. The Education Committee kicked off the year with the Star Student- Teacher Breakfast and closed out the summer with the annual TIP Luncheon. Our Government Affairs Committee once again executed a successful Henry Day at the Capitol. We had over 60 community leaders travel to Columbus, GA, to discuss prevalent issues that needed to be tackled within the county. And this year we have had record crowds at our Business Booster Luncheons and our Business After Hours events. So as you can see we have accomplished a lot in 2019 and as I turn over the reign to Christy Chewning in 2020 – using the data gathered at our Intergovernmental Retreat and our Survey - the Chamber has developed a solid Program of Work that will propel us into the next year. I am proud to say that in 2019 the Henry County Chamber of Commerce has truly …. Expanded our Possibilities.

F

ancy That Fine Jewelry has been a mainstay in the Henry County business community since 1992. Nestled between a Mexican restaurant and a bustling Kroger, Fancy That is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., off I-75 on Hudson Bridge Road, one of the busiest corridors in Stockbridge, GA. Showcasing luxury fine jewelry collections and offering custom designs as well as on-site craftsmanship and jewelry repairs, Fancy That is a friendly alternative for Henry County patrons who value purchasing their jewelry from a trusted and familiar jeweler. With two part-time sales representatives and an on-site jewelry craftsman, sole proprietor and a “Graduate Diamond” gemologist, Denise Swanson has successfully carved her niche in the jewelry industry by ensuring each customer’s buying experience is much more than a transaction. “Our customers are made to feel like family,” Denise replies with conviction when asked the secret to her success and longevity in the business. Denise fell in love with Henry County long before she opened Fancy That. From her home in Cobb County, she first started making the journey from the other side of metropolitan Atlanta to Stockbridge on only one day out of week, on Sundays, to attend church. She established strong ties and a network of friends through her church, of whom many are in her circle of friends and customers to this day. It was another lifelong friend and professional mentor who encouraged Denise to open her jewelry store in Henry County. “I worked for him in his jewelry store in Cobb County,” Denise explains. “He was very encouraging and supportive when I told him I wanted to open a jewelry store – as long as I didn’t open it in Cobb County.”

Before the store opens, Denise places an urgent order – matching, engraved bracelets for two little girls from their “grandma.”

As passionate as she is about Fancy That, Denise has another mission in her life that is just as fulfilling. She is the caregiver of her parents, both octogenarians who reside with her in Cobb County more than 50 miles from

The Chamber has always been very supportive of Fancy That. her jewelry store. It’s a trek she’s made almost daily for over 27 years and one that she makes with no complaints. “As a caregiver, you do what you have to do. My parents are my buddies,” she offers with a smile. “And I’m so thankful to

have them with me.” Denise arises at 3:30 a.m. to prepare necessities for her parents before embarking on the one hour, plus or minus, drive to work in Henry County. By 9:00 a.m., she arrives at the jewelry shop and tackles backoffice work needed prior to opening at ten. At 10:00 a.m., on any given day, a repeat customer is waiting at the door. Chamber Involvement Like many retail business owners, Denise’s time is sparse for daytime activities away from the jewelry store. But she keeps informed about important matters in the Henry County business community through the monthly HCCC newsletter which is mailed to members as an insert in the Henry Herald newspaper on the last Wednesday in the month. “The Chamber has always been very supportive of Fancy That. Sending referrals and keeping me in the loop on matters that impact the business community,” said Denise.

Signs of Failure Doug McElhaney, Business Consultant UGA Small Business Development Center at Clayton State University

The first sign of failure is losing sales momentum. No one is talking about your service or products. Any business owner needs to be constantly selling products

and services. If a new customer has not been gained in the last month, it may be time to look at the sales force or marketing plan. The second sign of failure is poor cash flow and past due bills. If revenue budgets are not being met, poor cash flow will create delinquent bills and thus hindering daily operations. The third sign of a failing business is the lack of continuous improvement and innovation. Status quo cannot be allowed in any organization. Complacency and failure to adapt are proven habits of failure. No matter how successful the organization; there is always room for improvement. One suggestion is to meet with sales and operations employees monthly to see what new processes and products are needed for continued success. The final sign of failure is high turnover and having problems

filling positions. A failing business may be imploding due to a toxic work environment. As a consultant, much can be learned about an organization through turnover percentages. A healthy, thriving company is the best employee recruiter. In closing, only a few signs have been discussed. There are several more reasons small businesses tend to close. One last item of discussion is to spend as much time as possible with customers and employees. Customers know your strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. An employee spends 40 plus hours per week in their job environment. If anyone knows process flaws, it would be team members. Never under-estimate an employee’s knowledge. For more information on UGA SBDC at Clayton State University, call 678-466-5100.

Ninety percent of all jobs are created by small businesses. This statistic is one reason the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) exists. Small businesses are responsible for substantial economic growth and thus government resources are allotted for training, consulting, sustaining and education through SBDC. However, with success, comes failure. Only half of small businesses survive five years and 33% reach the 10 year mark. Failing businesses do give warning signs prior to closing. The adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure applies in this scenario. So, what signs should be recognized when proactively managing a business?

CLASS OF 2020 LEARNS ABOUT INVOLVEMENT ON COMMUNITY DAY

Being a part of Leadership Henry Class of 2020 is such a great experience for me and being able to share my thoughts about Community Day is more of an exciting experience, being that I am so involved in the community. We started our day with community presentations from sixteen community organizations, all of which are doing great things in Henry County. Personally, my top two organizations were Henry County Senior Services and Sacred Journey Hospice. Henry County Senior Services means a lot to me because I love advocating for the seniors. I feel that the seniors are such an underserved market and I want to support our senior citizens. Sacred Journey Hospice was another organization that meant a lot to me. They too do an excellent job at serving our seniors. It is important that we educate our senior citizens on the services that are available to them in the community. Our next experience was with A Friend’s House. I love what they are doing for our young people. They have an awesome

facility and thanks to Leadership Henry Class of 2019, have an amazing addition to their facility. After A Friend’s House, we visited Henry County Performing Arts Center. The performance that our class did at the spur of a moment was magnificent. We all have hidden talents inside of us. The last place we visited was Southern Belle Farm. Being that I am a gardener, I had a splendid time touring the farm and taking in every moment of it. Observing how they plant strawberries and other crops was a breathtaking moment. Watching the pig race was a grand moment for me because I have never seen pigs race before! Through this experience, I am sure that I will learn a lot about Henry County and make a huge impact on our Henry County senior citizens!

In November, the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2020 students were able to tour the Henry County Jail, the Sheriff’s Office, and the 911 Center of Operations. A sneak peek into the case scenario simulation room where law enforcement have the opportunity to be in real life situations without danger captured the young leaders’ attention. Youth Leadership Henry Board Member Lt. Robert Howell held several open discussions with the learners about their thoughts and concerns with law enforcement in today’s climate. While walking through many scenarios and possibilities, the students were able to see through a different lens and a new perspective to help understand the split second decisions that the police force have to make every day. Lt. Howell also held lively discussions about gang awareness, the difference between the right to free speech and crossing the line of hatred and malicious intent, sex trafficking and

their signs, and the variations of drugs and their impact on the community. The Henry County K-9 unit treated the class to a variety of real life applications. The demonstrations were informative and allowed the learners to witness the amazing talents of trained canines. Afterwards, the officers explained a number of possible scenarios they could be put in, the processes of training and service, and how they are prepared to At the Henry County 911 Center, serve and protect our community. OCTOBER BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEON RECAP

2019 BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEONS — A VERY GOOD YEAR! By Dodie Cason, HCCC Small Business Council, Chair, and AVP, Business Banker, Heritage Bank We were shocked to hear that the number of Opioid related deaths, each year, comes in at a staggering 49,000. This is the equivalent to filling up SunTrust Park! Another year of Business Booster Luncheons (BBL) have passed. It seems like it was just yesterday that Lydia Pierre, owner of Pierre Branding Group, had us all thinking about our own personal brand and resolutions. In January, Lydia taught that “you are your biggest investment. Put time into yourself. Market yourself”. As you reflect over your year, I ask, have you taken her advice? In February, Michelle Amara, the President and Owner of SCB, explained how video marketing impacts your business. Have you made your video yet? Michelle did say that “videos make you and your business more relatable and builds a connection between you and the community”. The March winds blew in Mary Elizabeth Davis, the Henry County School Superintendent. She gave updates on student performance, budget demands and safety plans. Imagine if you had 42,000 kids- she does!

The June heat didn’t deter the arrival of our new Chamber President Joseph Henning and his vision for the future. We are so happy to have Joe and he seems to have adjusted quite well to our sweet tea and southern charm. Flip-flops and bikini tops – we all went to the beach in July, so we took a break from our luncheons.

in October. She gave updates on the Piedmont Henry facility and shared the woes of the medical insurance world. We saluted our Veteran’s in November! Thank you to all who have served! We acknowledged the positive impact these men and women have made on our country and recognized the substantial contributions they make as employees. Our panel of speakers included Bob Van Dunk and James Dunn from the Veterans Support Group and Kevin Smith from Toppan Interamerica. Charlie Pugh from the Georgia Department of Labor moderated these experts on topics such as veterans as role-model employees, statistics supporting positive employer benefits for hiring veterans and veteran support programs.

With a warm welcome, Piedmont Henry Hospital introduced attendees to their services and impact on the community.

The October BBL was an amazing success. Thanks to Piedmont Henry CEO, Deborah Armstrong, for hosting the event and giving guests an exclusive “White Coat Tour” of Henry County’s shining star of hospitals. In addition to gaining knowledge on the wide array of specialized services the hospital provides, attendees learned about Piedmont Henry’s great impact on the community and the future trends in the medical industry. Rapid Gourmet Catering prepared tasteful meals for everyone, rounding off the gathering in the best way.

In April, Shane Hunter, Certified Financial Planner with Pyke & Associates, prepared us for life’s seasons. He spoke about financial security, insurance expenses, long term illness and death and retirement planning. You can never be too prepared! Emmett Highland, the DEA Atlanta Diversion Outreach Coordinator brought us the facts on the Opioid Epidemic in May.

August brought us back to the harsh reality of Internet dangers and child sex-trafficking. Priti Griffin, Founder and Executive Director for Raise Me Up Foundation, relayed the importance of communicating with your children and teens and the value of knowing what they are doing. We turned the heat up a notch in September, with Alisa Kirk, the Area Director of the UGA SBDC at Clayton State University. Thanks to Alisa, we introvert’s no longer fear networking! Deborah Armstrong, CEO of Piedmont Henry Hospital, sliced into the medical domain

Dodie Cason, Heritage Bank

We find ourselves at the end of another year and we are so very thankful for our sponsors and our many door prize donors, we are brighter from all of our new found knowledge and we have been filled from the great meals we have shared with fellow chamber members. We again take a break in December to celebrate our Creator, embrace family traditions and scold that naughty elf on the shelf. Then…..we will return with a bigger and better New year!

Piedmont Henry CEO, Deborah Armstrong, shared information about new projects that will enhance the institution and their commitment to Director of Marketing at the Henry County Development Authority Leah Brown poses with her new prize! delivering compassionate care.
