MEMBER SUPPORT
MANAGING MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS AGAINST A MOVING TARGET By Art Reid, Business Consultant, UGA Small Business Development Center at Clayton State University
Many years ago, Delta’s ad agency conducted a study among frequent business travelers to understand what services matter the most when traveling. The study was conducted among business travelers by phone, in their place of business. Additionally, a companion survey was conducted among business travelers in person, sitting in their seats after having successfully boarded their flight. The questions were identical on both surveys, but business travelers in their place of business (pre-travel) rated items such as price, ease of reservations and on-time departure as the most important aspects of their travel experience, whereas on-board travelers rated quality of cabin service and food at the top of their list. The Delta study was a good reminder that customer motivations, thoughts and conclusions will shift as individuals move through a given sales path – as they move from learning about a product or service, to research and shopping, to purchase. The perceived value of what’s being offered is always changing based on such factors as marketplace conditions and competitive offerings. And the motivations of the customer is always changing based on budget, location and shifting priorities. Naturally, the appeal of an advertising message or promotional offer will change over time as well. This is true whether an individual is a consumer making a retail purchase, or a business leader making a purchase on behalf of a company. For this reason, it’s critical that your small business understand the triggers that guide a customer’s decision at various points along the sales cycle. This requires an understanding of that customer’s frame of mind at each stage, and an understanding of those factors which
influence that frame of mind. Here are some things you can do, in practice, to make an understanding of your ever-changing customer a part of your culture and routine. 1. Become an expert on your customer and their motivations. Take the time to consider and write down the top 5-10 trends you see moving forward that you believe will have the greatest influence on your customer’s thoughts and opinions about your product or service. 2. Re-examine your market space. Take a step back to consider what business you’re really in and with whom you compete. This will help you understand the choices your customers make in selecting your products or services versus alternatives. 3. Tap into the communities, networks and groups that operate in your industry -- even outside groups that may compete for your customer’s attention. Learn from the experiences of other businesses who focus on your same customers. Your customers and prospects are a moving target. Having an understanding of where they’re coming from (literally as well as their attitudes) will help you determine where they’re going next. Paying attention will help you to “train” your brain to understand and keep up with your customers as their thoughts and conclusions evolve. For local, in-person help on this matter and more, contact the UGA Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and take advantage of small business and entrepreneur training classes and no-cost consulting services. MEMBER NEWS LILY HENSON, M.D., NAMED CEO OF PIEDMONT HENRY HOSPITAL
LILY HENSON, M.D. Chief Executive Officer Piedmont Henry Hospital
STOCKBRIDGE, GA (January 29, 2020) – Lily Henson, M.D., returned to Piedmont Henry Hospital to serve as the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO). She oversees the hospital’s 1,750 employees and 700 physicians. Dr. Henson began her new role on February 3, after the retirement of Deborah Armstrong, FACHE.
Dr. Henson joined Piedmont Healthcare in 2015 as the Chief of Neurology and joined Piedmont Henry in 2016 as the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer. Her focus as CMO was to reinforce the hospital’s culture of safety and to create an infrastructure that provided the best care for patients. “Dr. Henson will be a fantastic leader for Piedmont Henry,” said Kevin Brown, President and CEO of Piedmont Healthcare. “She has a proven record of success in championing the high-quality, patient-centered care that lies at the heart of our mission and she also will inspire change and lead Piedmont Henry towards our system’s goals regarding Quality, Safety, and Service.” With 236 beds, Piedmont Henry is the fifth largest of the system’s 11 hospitals. However, with more than 90,000 emergency visits annually, it has the busiest Emergency Department in the system after Piedmont Columbus-Midtown, which is a Level II Trauma Center. “With such a busy Emergency Department, Piedmont Henry provides some unique challenges from a leadership perspective,” said Dr. Patrick Battey, CEO of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital who also serves as CEO of the system’s Atlanta hub, which includes Piedmont Henry. “With her experience at Piedmont Henry, her leadership abilities and her experience as a clinician, I believe that
10 | HENRY COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE www.henrycounty.com
Dr. Henson will deliver on Piedmont’s Promise to make a positive difference in every patient’s life at Piedmont Henry.” During her time at Piedmont Henry, Dr. Henson made significant contributions to improving Piedmont Henry’s quality metrics – reducing serious safety events by 83 percent and helping to cut hospital acquired infections in half. She is eager to continue that work, while also leading Piedmont Henry’s growth, and sustaining its success. “The staff at Piedmont Henry is full of amazing, compassionate people. They provide excellent care to our patients and they are here to make a difference,” said Dr. Henson. “I am excited to lead this team and I look forward to all we will accomplish together.” Dr. Henson received her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She practiced neurology in Seattle with Swedish Health Services and was previously the Vice President of Medical Affairs of one of Swedish’s community hospitals after serving as Chief of Staff of Swedish Medical Center’s Issaquah campus. She has received a number of accolades as well. A few of these awards are being a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and a former member of the board of directors for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Henry County’s Hands of Hope Clinic.
LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP
A leadership program offered by the Henry County Chamber of Commerce; Leadership Henry visited the Georgia Capitol in February for an up-close view of the governing process.
TAKING PRIDE IN THE PROCESS By Rebecca Dervan
Our State Government Day began with a visit to our State Capitol. It was quite impressive to see it in person for the first time. The stonework detail on the outside, only to be complimented with the exquisite marble on the inside, makes a statement that Representative Andrew J. Welch - Georgia House was one of the Georgia legislative builds pride to be a Georgian. delegation who greeted the Leadership Henry Once inside, the beautiful open Class of 2020 on State Government Day in February. rotunda allows you to see all the open floors that contain many displays that reflect our beautiful state and make it unique. We had the distinct opportunity to meet with Senator Brian Strickland, State Representatives El-Mahdi Holly and Andy Welch. It was very encouraging to hear from each of them all that they are doing for our great state and the upcoming plans to continue to grow Georgia economically. We also had the amazing honor to meet Governor Brian Kemp. As we continued our visit, we were able to tour the legislative chambers of the House of Representatives and the Senate. We heard from the State School Superintendent’s office how strong our school system is, not only at the state level, but certainly very excited to hear how well Henry County is doing with our growth and progression. We finished the day at the Department of Agriculture and Economic Development and were able to hear from State Agriculture Commissioner, Gary Black, about what the Georgia Grown Program is doing for the state of Georgia. Beginning the day with the view of the busts of so many Georgians paving the way for how strong our state is today and finishing it with the presentations of programs and initiatives to continue that growth, leaves one proud to be a part of the Georgia family. This update was provided by Rebecca Dervan, Director of Marketing and Development of Strong Rock Christian School and one of the Class of 2020 participants in Leadership Henry.
Representative El-Mahdi Holly - Georgia House, was one of the members of the Georgia legislative body to host the Youth Leadership Henry, a leadership program of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, for eligible sophomores throughout Henry County. Here, Rep. Holly gives student members of Youth Leadership Henry a candid overview of the issues facing state government.
THE FUTURE OF STATE GOVERNMENT REVEALED By Christian Dent, 10th Grade Student at Strong Rock Christian School
A feeling of importance surrounds you as you walk through the doors of the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta. For over 130 years, this building has stood for one purpose and one purpose only, for the people. In February, as a part of Youth Leadership Henry, I along with other sophomores from around Henry County who are members of the program visited the State Capitol. We started off our day by gathering into a legislative committee room and discussing the prominence and privilege of being at the capitol. We then got the chance to discuss and understand the important but often misunderstood career of lobbying with lobbyist William Woodall, as well as the importance of voting and civic involvement with a representative from the Secretary of State’s office. State Representatives Andy Welch, and El-Mahdi Holly joined us along with State Senator Brian Strickland. We discussed criminal justice reform, education, and the state budget, which was on the forefront of the state’s agenda for that week. As our group waited to grab a photo-op with Governor Brian Kemp, I took the time as an opportunity to catch up with my state representative, friend, and mentor El-Mahdi Holly. We discussed how important bipartisanship is in the state of Georgia, and how everything that gets done in Georgia is and must be done by both parties working together, otherwise citizens would not see results. He mentioned that the state of Georgia has budgets to balance, kids to educate, and citizens to look after, and that if Georgia subscribed to the same partisan loyalties that Washington, D.C. does, nothing would get done. What I thought was a one on one conversation soon turned into a discussion between five or six of us and Representative Holly. I will forever be grateful to Youth Leadership Henry for giving me the unique and educational opportunity to visit the State Capitol. I hope to one day enter the world of politics and government, and I believe because of this opportunity, I am better prepared and have gained more insight to the workings of state government here in Georgia. Last, I have now learned a deeper love and appreciation for Henry County and the State of Georgia. I can’t wait to work with others in the future to make my community and state a better place for everyone. HENRY COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE www.henrycounty.com

Professional EOS® Implementer
Profit Made Simple, LLC TOPIC: GAINING CONTROL OF YOUR BUSINESS: HOW TO SIMPLIFY, CLARIFY AND ACHIEVE YOUR VISION Are you running your business or is it running you? You will not want to miss the April Business Booster Luncheon, where Catherine Cates will help you clarify, simplify, and achieve your vision. Most, if not all, entrepreneurs experience many challenges when running their own business. If you would like to see your business consistently run better and grow faster, then Catherine Cates can deliver tips to help you with that. She brings a dynamic presentation, encompasses the Six Key Components of the top companies, and tools that can be used immediately to make a difference in your company. About the Speaker Catherine Cates has always been passionate about entrepreneurship. She grew up in a family where her father and both grandfathers were entrepreneurs. After time in consulting and corporate finance, she jumped into the entrepreneurial world, leading a turnaround at a 120-employee manufacturing business, growing a medical staffing business, and improving profits and operations at an electrical contractor. Catherine found being an entrepreneur was harder than it needed to be. She was often frustrated by the amount of time and effort it took to get her team trained and focused on the right tasks to achieve goals. She saw a lot of great management ideas, but most were hard to implement which made work less fun and more time consuming. This frustration is why she is so passionate about working with entrepreneurs as a Professional EOS Implementer. Catherine brings a dedication to “Keep it Simple” to her EOS work with clients. Real. Simple. Results. Catherine lives in Atlanta and implements EOS across the country. She is also the favorite aunt for her three nieces and three great-nephews. She grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and is a lifelong UNC Tarheels fan. She earned a BA from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Harvard. Catherine is a long-standing member of Vistage and Women’s Presidents Organization peer groups. Sponsored by Chamber Member:

FEBRUARY BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEON RECAP By Dodie Cason, Assistant Vice President, Business Banker, Heritage Bank, and HCCC Small Business Council, Chair
Thank you to our February BBL Sponsor
If you have customers, then you know that you will never make 100% of them happy, 100% of the time! We’re human and make mistakes and sometimes you just get a grouchy customer! In February, Lincoln Parks spoke with us on just how to respond if we receive a negative review on one of the various online portals. He says, we should never delete a negative review, but respond to it as quickly as possible to right the situation! He also shared that there are numerous sites that showcase reviews and that we need to “claim” our business on each of these. He also noted that some of the sites are much more reputable then others. Wow, for the average person, this computer stuff can be overwhelming and time consuming. It is good to know we have honest, knowledgeable professionals in our community to take care of our marketing needs, like the team at Web Mobile Fusion. Our Business Booster Luncheon was well attended with a ton of networking action taking place! Outback Steak House catered our lunch. They provided us with crisp healthy salads that were topped with their awesome chicken and steak! We greatly appreciate our February BBL sponsor Kaiser Permanente! the second annual Women’s EmPOWERment Summit held on March 5, 2020, at the Merle Manders Conference Center in Stockbridge, GA. The event was presented by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and augmented by an array of corporate and supporting sponsors. From local organizations to Fortune 500, the mix of women professionals, speakers as well as attendees, for the day-long event was a powerful and diverse representation of the Henry County business community led by women. Each speaker, independent of each other and from unique and multiple perspectives, touched on a personal experience which reinforced the conference theme: “Educate. Engage. Empower.” The more than 125 women heard stories of the many turns, ups and downs, from the speakers who all have achieved success in their careers and revealed key moments that guided their paths to get there.
