MEMBER SUPPORT THE TOP THREE FINANCIAL MISTAKES OF A SMALL BUSINESS STARTUP By Alisa Kirk, Area Director, UGA SBDC at Clayton State University

Many entrepreneurs start their businesses with detailed plans on how they’re going to start, manage, and operate their business. Some even have detailed financial projections on how they’re going to make and spend their money. As consultants helping small business owners to start and grow their businesses, we see many successes but also some failures. We’ve noticed three common mistakes that can make or break a business in its first year.

Tommy Berg, representing Bug House Pest Control, was named Chamber Ambassador for the month of January. Berg is pictured receiving his certificate from Chamber Board member Genie Moore, Director, Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Tommy Berg was named Ambassador of the Month for the month of January. Having served as an Ambassador for many years and after a short absence, Berg got back involved with the Chamber in June 2019 as a representative for Bug House Pest Control. Since rejoining the Ambassadors team, Tommy has attended most of the Chamber ribbon cuttings and other events, served as a volunteer and participated as a sponsor of the Golf Classic. He also served on the front line for the Chamber Check-In Visits held in February. Chamber Director of Membership Gary Sparrow says about Berg, “He is always willing to help in any capacity.”

DIRECTOR OF TOURISM RECEIVES RECOGNITION AS FEMALE LEADER IN COMMUNITY Laura Luker, Director of Tourism at Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau is one of the women recognized as a female leader in the community. In celebration of Women’s History Month, Southern Crescent Broadcasting (SCB) is highlighting influential women throughout Henry County including Laura Luker who began as Director of Tourism for the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau (HCCVB) in 2008. Approaching 12 years at the HCCVB in November, Luker says she Laura Luker enjoys the role because it is entirely about helping people. Whether helping travelers find new attractions or helping partners attract new guests, she calls tourism a “happy industry.” The experiential aspect of the tourism combined with the creative components that include marketing make for an enjoyable role for the travel professional. Under Luker’s direction, the HCCVB earned accolades including a Shining Example Award from Southeastern Tourism Society and a Governor’s State Tourism Award. Some may be surprised by the breadth of work the HCCVB accomplishes from establishing partnerships to hosting travel writers from around the country. Luker remains a hospitable host through her approachability and quirky sense of humor that finds her revealing fun facts such as her long-held desire to ride an ostrich. Her personality, knowledge and genuine interest in her destination shines through.

Stockbridge Mayor Anthony Ford and Council greeted the attendees and shared their excitement for the City's Centennial. Stockbridge officially recognizes 100 years of cityhood on August 6, 2020 but the municipality will hold various celebratory initiatives and events throughout the year. 10 | HENRY COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE  www.henrycounty.com

Luker is driven by the belief that Henry County is abundant in offerings and is truly a hidden gem. Her vision of this is highlighted when she directs visitors to local attractions or informs residents about locations of which they were unaware. Awakening people to the county’s offerings, providing education and celebrating the individuals who create memorable experiences for visitors is at the heart of what she does.

LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP

OPERATION HEALTHCARE – WINNING IN HENRY COUNTY By Tanya Gilmore

Healthcare Day was interesting and fun filled. The morning started out at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Sports Medicine with a delicious breakfast with shrimp and grits, eggs, sausage and cinnamon cake. The presentation focused on the daily operations directly influencing pediatric patient care from Physical Therapy to Urgent Care. It was great seeing how the different Healthcare organizations in Henry County come together to meet the needs of patients in demanding environments. We headed over to Piedmont Henry Hospital which included several guest speakers including the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Medical Officer whom I have the pleasure of working with every day. The presentations discussed future growth plans to expand the Emergency Room and to build another tower in the next 3-5 years as the population in Henry County continues to grow. There were several other presentations from Sacred Journey Hospice, Hands of Hope and the Henry County Health Department. Piedmont Henry provided tours as we divided into groups to visit the Cardiology Department, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Radiology. It was an awesome experience to share with the Leadership Henry Class of 2020. As we came to the end of our day, the best part was last. During the Piedmont Henry Surgery Overview, the Leadership class divided into teams to play the Operation board game and had to dress each other in protective wear. It was fun, and there was a lot of positive energy in the room among leaders. There was a sense of patience and calmness in the room as we worked together as a team to remove the bones without hitting the buzzer. It was awesome seeing the teams use their remarkable talents and skills to fuel our mutual efforts to win the game. This experience was shared by Tanya Gilmore, Clinical Nurse Manager of Family Care Center at Piedmont Henry Hospital and current student of Leadership Henry Class of 2020. Gilmore is excited about the unlimited capacity to grow with the Class of 2020 Leadership Henry.

THE BEAUTY OF PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE By Don Dunlap, CTAE Department, Chair, and Excel Academy, Instructor

In January, four members of this year’s Youth Leadership Henry class accepted the standing invitation of the board of directors of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce to attend one of their monthly board meetings. They recognized this as a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the role the Chamber plays in ensuring Henry County is a great place to live, work, and play. All tenth graders, Christian Dent and Noah Kilgore (Strong Rock Christian School), Abraham Martinez (Eagles Landing High School), and Faith Peavey (homeschool) arrived at the Chamber of Commerce with ample time to meet the staff and directors. After being called to order by Chair Sharon Ponder, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance, had a moment for recognitions and reflections, and approved the previous month’s minutes and the Chamber’s and the Henry County Conventions & Visitors Bureau’s financial statements. After discussing the upcoming Annual Chamber Banquet and One Henry initiative, the class was introduced to the Chamber’s recent accomplishments in the form of an infographic, and watched as the board reviewed the Board Commitment Statement, and discussed the upcoming 2020 Economic Forecast breakfast being hosted by the City of Stockbridge. A real eye-opener for our four attendees was the reports from the various Chamber committees including Youth Leadership Henry, the Water and Development authorities, Mayors of municipalities, County Commission Chair, Hospital CEO, and Superintendent of Schools. This rapid briefing from each of the Chamber stakeholders ensures that the assembled community leaders are up to date on everything that’s going on across our community. After President Joe Henning’s and Chair Ponder’s remarks, the meeting adjourned, just an hour after being called to order. What an efficiently run meeting! Our class members in attendance all said they enjoyed the meeting; it really opened their eyes to a lot going on in our community that they didn’t know about, allowed them to see how excellent parliamentary procedure works, and learned how much our Chamber of Commerce does to make Henry County a great place to live, work, and play. They really appreciated the invitation of the board to join them! HENRY COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE  www.henrycounty.com

JANUARY BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEON RECAP By Dodie Cason, Assistant Vice President, Business Banker, Heritage Bank, and HCCC Small Business Council, Chair

The New Year has officially kicked into gear, thanks to Leslie Wilkins and Keith Mather of Pipeline Social Media! When posting information about your business on social media, it can be difficult to understand the variety of platforms. It can also be hard to decide which posts to share, when to share these posts, and who in your company should make them. While it seems like a never-ending cycle, Leslie and Keith came to our rescue at the January Business Booster Luncheon. The pair gave guests many helpful tips about using networks on the web to further their businesses. First, they suggested that we focus on our company website, making sure that the image we present flows over to our social media posts. Our next discussion was about platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The guests learned that these networks are like portals that can expose your business to a bigger audience. Moreover, Keith and Leslie informed us on the different types of posts and the core elements that will make them stand out from a crowd. Other tidbits included highlighting your staff or sharing positive customer reviews. However, the key to any post is the timing. Fraser, owner of Carolyn Wright Fraser – Edward Jones Financial Advisor and member of the Henry County Chamber since 2015, opened her Edward Jones business in 2013 serving Henry County communities. Fraser joins a group of other Edward Jones financial advisors across the United States to lead this essential initiative. Fraser is an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, member of the Henry County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., executive board member with the Clayton-Henry South Metro Pan Hellenic Council; ambassador with the Henry County Chamber of Commerce; and chairperson of the Luella High School Council. Commenting on her new role as the DEI Chair, Fraser said, “I am honored to be able to provide education, support and services in and around the community where I live and work.
