MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
JUNE WOOD
Sharon Ponder Vice President of Finance at the Bennett International Group 2019 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce
Our Chamber… The month of March has been designated as Women’s History Month. There have been so many important female figures throughout history and of recent who have made an impact in my life. However, none so impactful as the influence of my mother. As a young child, I never understood the amount of dedication it took for my mother to juggle a full time job while taking care of her home and family and being in attendance at every one of my afterschool functions. My mother was able to manage all of these activities without the advent of all the advance technologies that we have today. I would watch my mother walk around with a note pad and simply a list of her many to-do’s. Somehow, she managed to get all of her tasks done with a spirit of excellence. Along with the influence of my mother I have been blessed to have others in my life as influencers. I have been able to “grow up” in the business field here at Bennett International Group with an excellent role model in the owner, Mrs. Marcia Taylor. Her story of coming from humble beginnings to where she is now is truly inspiring. In 1974, Marcia and her husband, JD Garri-

son, purchased George Bennett Motor Express which had 15 trucks and 30 trailers. In 1981, J.D. unexpectedly passed away, but Marcia opted to forge ahead at being the owner of a trucking company in a predominately male industry. Fast forward to today and Bennett International Group is now comprised of trucking, warehousing, crane and international freight forwarding companies. Bennett now has over 1000
employees and over 3,000 drivers. All of this is due to her faith and her fortitude to overcome obstacles. On March 7, the Chamber will be sponsoring our first ever Women’s EmPOWERment Summit. So whether you are that working mom trying to navigate how to balance all of the tasks life is throwing at you or you are that new entrepreneur trying to determine your next business move, our empowerment conference
will have something for you. Thanks to our presenting sponsor, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and all of our other sponsors for making this event possible. Hope to see you there as we continue ~ Our Chamber… Expanding Our Possibilities.

Why I Use Lists until I have enough to talk to the co-worker about (or until something is urgent) and I wait until a time when the person is free to ask my questions. That way, it doesn’t distract the co-worker from his/her job just to answer my questions. • When I need to do something that is dependent on something else (tell a client something when he/she calls, or do something when I get home), I don’t have to try to remember what it was if I write it on a list. This solves the problem of always remembering what I needed to do when it’s too late or I’m not there anymore. • I create checklists of procedures for tasks that took me a while to figure out. These lists help the next person know what to do without searching. Lists are also important for safety procedures or other processes that are important to the job. I know you’re probably thinking that lists aren’t for you, or they’re too much trouble. They might be, if you never clean out the list or don’t review the lists daily. If it’s a checklist for employees to follow, the list has to be enforced to be worth the trouble. All I know is that I was skeptical when I read that it would clear my mind. Now I’m a believer!

If you’ve ever read the Harry Potter books or seen the movies, you may remember seeing By Alisa Kirk Professor Dumbledore use his Pensieve to get rid of all the extra thoughts that are bouncing around on his head. He would use his wand to pull the thoughts out one by one and place them in the Pensieve for safekeeping. It seems like just a fantasy idea, until you consider the number of times you’re riding home from work or awaking from a sound sleep only to think of something you forgot to do. What if you could get those thoughts out of your head and free your mind for current issues? That’s why I use lists. When I think of something I need to do, I write it on notecards that I carry around with me. I have a different notecard for each category of list, and I daily go through the notecards to make sure I do what needs to be done. Here’s how it helps me: • When I go through my email, I deal with each email on the spot. If it’s going to take a while or I can’t deal with the email item right now, I add it to a list. Then I get all of the emails out of the inbox so they won’t distract me. • When I need to ask a co-worker a question, I write it down on a list. I collect those items

CHAMBER BRIEFS Learn about the great things that are happening in our community… Alethia Barnes Named Chamber Ambassador of the Month in January For her dedicated service, Chamber Ambassador Alethia Barnes (l.) was awarded January Ambassador of the Month at the monthly Ambassador’s luncheon held at Cowboy Chicken located in South Point Shopping Center. Presenting the award was Board member Ambassador Committee Chair, Genie Moore. If you are a Chamber member with good news to share, send your logo and/or photo and information to bingram@henrycounty.com and let us spread the word!
Leadership Henry learns about County Government during January class By Trisha Colpetzer January was all about county government as the Leadership Henry class visited with leadership from a variety of county departments. The morning session was held at the Cotton Fields Golf Course where County Manager – a member of the Leadership Henry class of 2017 – Cheri Matthews welcomed the class and gave an overview of Henry County. Johnny Wilson, District I Commissioner, discussed with the class many of the issues that he and the other commissioners are facing, followed by a question and answer session. Over the course of the morning, the class heard from several other speakers including: • Daunte Gibbs, Planning and Economic Director
• Ron Burkhalter, Public Works Director • David Curry, Tax Commissioner • David Smith, Financial Services Director Following lunch provided by Pippin’s BBQ and Catering, the class moved to the Henry County Judicial Center. Henry County Solicitor Pam Bettis provided an overview of the Henry County Judicial Center before Henry County District Attorney Darius Patillo – a member of the Leadership Henry class of 2018 – gave the class more information about how his team helps
Cheri Matthews, County Manager, and Brad Johnson, Deputy County Manager, updated the class on some of the many services the County provides.
represent the citizens of Henry County. They also learned how the Sheriff ’s Department keeps our court facilities safe and secure for the over 200,000 people that visited last year.
To finish the day, the class spent time working on their legacy project, the capstone assignment they must complete as a class prior to graduation.
YLH experiences Georgia state legislation in action
By Lyndsay Theado On Tuesday, February 5th, the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2019 visited the Georgia State Capitol for their day of focus on Georgia state government. Many of our Henry County Representatives and our local Senators stopped by to talk with the class about what their daily life in policy making entails. The students were able to ask lots of questions and were all surprised to learn that most of our local legislators didn’t start out pursuing these careers, but had life experiences that lead them to this path. Our thanks go out to Senator Emmanuel Jones, Senator Brian Strickland, Rep. Andy
Welch, Rep. El-Mahdi Holly, Rep. Karen Mathiak, Rep. Demetrius Douglas, and Rep. Dale Rutledge for each taking time out of their busy morning to talk with our class! The students joined the gallery in the House of Representatives and were able to watch how the daily agenda unfolds when in session. Once the sessions were completed, they toured the Senate floor and then spent time with Senator Strickland who answered all of their questions. The class made a stop at the Georgia Department of Education where they dialoged and asked questions about their personal, educational journeys. Finally, they visited the Georgia Department of Transportation 511 Center and observed how all of our roadways are monitored and learned how roadside assistance gets disYLH Class poses with the Henry County State legislative body and Governor Bryan Kemp. patched.

At Piedmont Henry our purpose and our promise is to make a positive difference in every life we touch. As a 236-bed, non-profit hospital, we are the primary healthcare resource serving the Henry County community and surrounding areas. As part of our promise to the community, we treat the patient, not just the disease. In the Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Henry, hundreds of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers look for support through on-site classes, support groups and online programs. Because cancer treatment involves more than medical care, free services and programs such as yoga, cooking demos and drumming are available to anyone affected by cancer at any phase in his or her journey.
