MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Sharon Ponder

JUNE WOOD

Vice President of Finance at the Bennett International Group 2019 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

Our Chamber… Expanding the Possibilities It’s hard to believe that three-fourths of my tenure as chair of the Henry County Chamber is now behind me. I came into the role with the mindset of what can we do to make a difference — to leave a legacy. It’s easy to accomplish such goals when you have a like-minded team around you. Every year in October, the Chamber’s board of directors meets to discuss the priorities for the upcoming year. Last fall, the very engaged group had no problem identifying tasks and objectives to get accomplished that would help take the Chamber to the next level. As mentioned in previous newsletters, one of the primary resources that was selected to help facilitate this change was the implementation of a member survey. This survey has now been issued to the membership and the results have been quantified so that we can use to make forward-thinking decisions. One of the items that came out of the survey was a need for more support for the small businesses. So, the staff began working immediately to find ways to move the envelope in this area. Out of this concern came the expansion of our partnership with Clayton State’s Small

Business Development Center. They will begin counselling sessions with small business owners in 30-minute increments once a month beginning in September. Our hope is that this will give our Chamber partners some added value to help them succeed in their businesses. It was also observed in the survey of the members that stated that they were not

very active was because it was due to the fact that they did not have time. With this knowledge, we are working on ensuring that the Chamber is offering services and content that would be beneficial to them and does not require them personally to attend any meetings. Some of the avenues that we are exploring are podcasts, blogs, Alexa briefings, and recording of future

Business Booster Luncheons. Again, the great thing about the major strides we are making at the Chamber is that it is totally based on feedback from our partners. We will continue to use this data to develop our 2020 programs and strategic plan-truly living up to our 2019 theme of Our Chamber … Expanding the Possibilities.

Pasta Max Café Its narrow sidewalk entrance and subtle front façade belies the essence of Italian flavor and atmosphere inside. The Pasta Max Café is the result of culinary aspirations for restauranteur Chef Douglas Zitz. A native of upstate New York, Douglas followed his calling after high school and graduated from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. He worked in several of South Florida’s finest restaurants before moving to Henry County with his wife Barbara and opening his first Pasta Max Cafe in Stockbridge in 1994. Douglas relocated the restaurant to its present location off the square on Griffin Street in 2006. Douglas celebrated 25 years as the owner of Pasta Max Café in July of this year. On a recent Monday morning, a day the restaurant is closed, Chef Douglas discussed the duration and success of Pasta Max Café. “We’ve

By Doug McElhaney, Business Consultant, Small Business Development Center, University of Georgia

Attempting to define customer service can be difficult. Everyone has their own definition. As a supply chain logistics professor, I spend a lot of time working with students and companies defining e-commerce customer service. As consumers, we are ordering more products on the web. Companies are spending billions on digital marketing and placing orders has never been easier. A couple of clicks and the purchase has been made. This article will explore how customer service can be enhanced with product delivery. As a consumer, there is nothing more frustrating than getting the wrong or damaged product delivered to your door. If you are in the manufacturing or transportation

industry, this article should help identify areas that need to be managed and monitored so that sales and customer service levels will improve. Customer service begins by adding value to the consumer. However, what is value and how is it created? In a nut- shell, value is benefits minus cost. Customer service is complex, but it does not have to be. Great e-customer service begins with fulfilling all of the following rights: Right product Right place Right time Right quantity

Right quality Right customer I feel as though we have transformed from a next day delivery society to the same day. Our expectations, as consumers, are becoming more demanding. Last mile delivery is growing due to customer’s demands. Our lives have become so full of business travel, baseball practice, piano lessons that we are looking for any ideas or services to make our lives a little easier. Thus, the demand for value has never been greater. However, the customer is not completely off of the hook. When placing an e-commerce order, it is important for the customer to double check addresses, product numbers and any other pertinent information. In summary, e-commerce will continue to grow due to the value it gives consumers. It saves time, gas, energy and who wants to be stuck in a slow checkout line when you can have it delivered to your door. As a former transportation executive, I can promise there is a lot of effort that goes into the six r’s of delivery. So, the next time you get the right product, to the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity and quality, don’t forget to thank your delivery person. They have completed a difficult task.

Youth Leadership Henry’s Selections Committee is reviewing the applicants for the Class of 2020. Out of the approximate 150 high school sophomores that apply for admission into this program, those on the Selections Committee must choose the 40 candidates that will learn how to make Henry County a better place to live, work, and play.

Last month, Leadership Henry launched the 2019-2020 cohort. Chair Cheri Matthews welcomed the 33 participants on behalf of the Leadership Henry Board and highlighted the expectations of those attending.

Other board members led introductions, leadership project discussions, and expectations of the class retreat. In addition to a two-day retreat in September, the 2020 class will also tour and learn about the county, government, education, healthcare, and more during the 10-month program. The year will conclude with a graduation event on May 12, 2020. Leadership Henry will give participants the tools to be a better citizen of the community and exposure to areas where they can contribute. A new requirement of participants is to contribute a recap of one of the 10 sessions for the newsletter, Chamber blog, or social media. During the coming year, you will read about the sessions and learn more about the participants in the class of 2020. If you are interested in learning more about Leadership Henry, please visit LeadershipHenry.com. This update was provided by Joseph Henning, president and CEO of the Henry County Chamber and one of the Class of 2020 participants in Leadership Henry. A threemonth resident of Henry County, Henning is certain he will gain great insight and new connections through the experience.

BELOW: Congressman Hice (left) and Henry County Board Chair June Wood spoke with members of the American Legion Post 516 during the August breakfast.

Henry County Chamber members joined Congressman Jody Hice (R-GA 10) for breakfast and conversation. The event was organized by the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee on Tuesday, Aug. 13. Sponsored by Heritage Bank, the breakfast was held at the Academy for Advanced Studies with food prepared by students of the Academy’s Culinary Arts Pathway. After a brief overview of several national headline issues, the Congressman engaged the attendees with Q&A focused more on local issues and impact. The Congressman along with a group of Chamber members completed a tour of several CTAE Pathway labs and classrooms including graphic design, welding, mechatronics, automotive, and culinary arts.

PainCon Medical Director, Dr. Fitzclarence N. Harper

HOSTED BY: Pain Consultants at Piedmont 1050 Eagles Landing Pkwy, Ste 300 Stockbridge, GA 30281 (678) 782-7999 | www.paincon.net The feedback on the Business After Hours hosted by Pain Consultants at Piedmont was wonderful. This was one of the best organized and most creative networking events this year and everyone had such a great time – PainCon Marketing Director Antavia Frazier deserves a special thanks for knowing what would make Chamber Members excited about visiting a pain center – the turnout was great! The Scavenger Hunt was a big hit and great conversation starter with much collaboration going on but in the end only one winner, Sharonda Wright of Home2 Suites by Hilton Atlanta. And the Beach Art helped set a free and breezy, fun atmosphere greeting myriad new faces with a smile. Not to mention that we had the pleasure of meeting all the doctors in the house including the PainCon Medical Director, Dr. Fitzclarence N. Harper, Jr., who informed everyone that the primary PainCon goal is to relieve chronic pain and restore quality of life.

AN INTROVERT’S GUIDE TO NETWORKING

BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEON UPDATE! Business Booster Luncheon was on summer break in July. The August Recap will be published in the next issue in October. Are you wondering how you can connect with the Chamber & become a sponsor of the Business Booster Luncheon? CONTACT BARBARA INGRAM AT: BINGRAM@HENRYCOUNTY.COM

Do you ever go to a networking event where there are people who seem fearless? These people approach others, always know the right thing to say, and seem to know most of the people in the room. The truth is, these people are probably introverts. They circulate and say the right things because they’ve worked on it: they know their strategy entering the room, and they know what they want to happen. They have honed their skills and learned the secrets to great networking. It’s time for you to learn them, too.
