YOUR BUSINESS IS OUR BUSINESS

Henry County Day

Since its early days following the repeal of prohibition, auto racing has been a staple in Georgia. NASCAR itself can trace many of its roots to small dirt tracks that dotted the countryside in rural Georgia in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Today, NASCAR serves as the preeminent stock-car racing organization with a nationwide presence and a fiercely loyal fan base. This month, NASCAR’s topthree largest racing series will make their annual stop at Henry County’s own Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 weekend Feb. 26-28, Georgia’s largest racing event of the year. Drawing fans from more than 40 states across the country, all eyes of the racing world will rest squarely on Hampton, as the historic railroad town welcomes the influx and excitement that NASCAR brings. In a nod to its early history, Atlanta Motor Speedway this year will celebrate its classic southern roots in true Georgia fashion. From unique concession foods and celebrities who call the Peach State home, to warm southern hospitality and charming drawls, AMS will embrace the identity that sets our state apart and makes us proud to call Georgia home. With the second stop on the 2016 NASCAR schedule, the Folds

of Honor QuikTrip 500 bears an even greater significance, as an allnew low-downforce aerodynamic setup on Sprint Cup Series cars makes its 2016 debut. The new package is expected to make for more competitive racing, more passing and a more entertaining experience for fans in the grandstands. All the action kicks off with the Active Pest Control Qualifying day on Friday, February 26. A full day of on-track action complete with practice sessions for all three series will be capped off with Sprint Cup Series qualifying, which will determine the starting lineup and pole position for Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. On Saturday, a racing doubleheader unique to Atlanta will take to the track as the Heads Up Georgia 250 XFINITY Series and the Georgia 200 Camping World Truck Series race run back-to-back with first green flag dropping at 1:30 p.m. Sunday’s main event kicks off at 1 p.m. to finish off the 2016 NASCAR weekend in Georgia. Tickets and specials are available now, starting at just $39 and can be found by visiting www. atlantamotorspeedway.com or calling the AMS ticket office at (770) 946-4211 or (877) 9-AMS-TIX.

Monday, February 15, is Henry County Day at the Capitol. This annual event, co-hosted by the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and the Henry County Development Authority, affords our business and civic leaders an opportunity to visit the state capitol and to meet with legislators involved in decision making processes that impact Henry County. It also provides an opportunity to showcase Henry County attractions and products to this audience of state officials. To attend or to donate local gift items, contact the Chamber at 770-957-5786.

It’s Performance Review Time! By Alisa Kirk

January is the time of year when a lot of companies do performance reviews of their personnel. Sometimes it starts with the employee completing his/her own self-evaluation and then giving it to the manager, who updates it with his/her own notes. They then have a face-toface meeting to discuss; the employee is then told whether he/she has met the company’s expectations that year. Here’s what often goes wrong: 1) the manager will only tell the employee glowing things in the review, no matter what the situation actually is, because merit pay is often tied to the review (or the manager doesn’t want to rock any boats); or 2) the manager will list both the good and the bad, which will often be a surprise

to the employee, and confrontations ensue. I advise my small business clients that performance reviews should be an on-going process. If there is a problem, it should be addressed and fixed. If anything praise-worthy happens, it should be noted at that time. If job duties need to be reexamined, set aside time to do it. Employees are more engaged when they get regular constructive feedback about their work. Most important is that they also know why work should be performed a certain way, and they are encouraged to give suggestions on ways to improve processes. A performance review is a mechanism for face-toface and written feedback to employees about their

Employees are more engaged when they get regular constructive feedback about their work.

performance, along with plans for changes in their job duties and processes. If your small business only does this once a year, consider changing this process to encourage regular, on-going twoway feedback. The result should be an increase in productivity and employee engagement. For help with this and any other small business matters, please contact the UGA Small Business Development Center at Clayton State University.

Piedmont Henry Hospital Earns 2015 Leapfrog Top Hospital Award

for their 2nd annual Youth Job Fair

This class of young community leaders will be putting on a job fair to help young people in Henry County connect with employers looking for workers in a variety of fields. The Leadership class does this as a service project to apply the skills they have learned in the program, and to benefit other young people in their community. If you are a business owner or manager looking for young people for after school, summer, or full-time employment, this is an event you won’t want to miss. You can have access to a large

number of 16-24 year olds – current high-schoolers, graduating seniors looking for full-time employment, and college students. Another possibility is

recruiting high school students who are looking for Work-Based Learning employers for the coming school year. There is no cost to participate, and you

will have members of this class working with you to ensure you get any needs attended to promptly. The event is from 10AM to 2PM in the Commons Area of Henry County High School on Monday, March 14. Henry Schools are out that day for a Professional Development day, so it will fit into the typical workweek, and you will have many young people available to talk to. For a registration form or more information, email us youthleadership@ leadershiphenry.com.

Leadership Henry class learns about Economic Development and Tourism in Henry County The December session of Leadership Henry was packed with great information and interesting discussion about economic development opportunities and the impact of tourism on our community. The first guest speakers of the day were Charles Stallworth and David Pitts from Georgia Power’s Community and Economic Development division. They provided some great information about growth and trends statewide as well as the processes and factors that affect an organization’s decision on where to locate. Next, the class heard from several representatives from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. Holly

Hunt shared about the Georgia State Small Business Credit Initiative, and Kim Carter explained the Downtown Development Revolving Loan Fund and shared some of the Fund’s successes. Community Services Regional Representative John VanBrunt also explained some of the other programs and funding available through the GDCA. The last speaker of the morning was Mill Graves, Retail and Commercial Development Associate with Electric Cities of Georgia. He provided additional insight into how our state and cities work to attract businesses and jobs to our community. One of the highlights of

Leadership Henry’s Economic Development Day is always the facility tour, and this year was no exception. The ALPLA team provided an insightful and interesting behind-the-scenes look at their manufacturing operation in McDonough, complete with hairnets for all of the class members. The class travelled back to the Chamber of Commerce for the remainder of the class day which included a presentation about the One Henry initiative and a very informative presentation by Laura Luker of the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Laura shared about how Henry County works to attract the film

industry to Henry County and the economic impact it has. Rounding out the day was the final session of the Energy Bus curriculum. The class will now shift its focus to developing a legacy project for this spring. Thank you to Charlie Moseley and the Henry County Development Authority for helping to coordinate this information-rich day. The class and speakers also enjoyed a great lunch from Patrick McHugh of 15th Street Pizza (and a Leadership Henry alumnus). The focus of the January class was county government and issues affecting our local communities.
