School Year Off and running Yellow buses are rolling. Retail stores are packed to the gills. Swimming pools are getting somewhat quieter. Without even having to look at a calendar, it all can only mean one thing – school is about to start anew.
Comfortably South of Atlanta The Henry County Chamber of Commerce serves as the voice for the business community, provides quality services and programs that meet the needs of its members, improves the economic environment of the community and creates a legacy of leadership for the future.
Each month the Chamber Ambassadors make Chamber Connection Visits, where we drop in on an unsuspecting member and surprise them with a gift bag. You can have a promotional item from your business included in the bag, and you are more than welcome to join us on our visits.
Henry County Schools will welcome back over 3,000 certified personnel and well over 41,000 students on August 3 for the start of the 2015-2016 school year, and this year promises to be better than before. Whether a family is gearing up to send a child off to kindergarten or prepare a senior for their final year, each family, regardless of their child’s grade level, will find many opportunities to watch students achieve academic success. It will always be the mission of the school system to ensure success for each student. After a year of continued recognitions for students and staff, the upcoming school year is bound to produce even more. The Board of Education, recognized in December as a Distinguished School Board by the Georgia School Boards Association, welcomed two new members this year and continued its work to support employees and students in their collective efforts to produce students who are college, career, and life ready. Their actions have afforded the school system its largest general operating budget which means pay increases and no furlough days for a second consecutive year for all employees. There have been additional staff members welcomed to the central office to assist districtwide with such matters as discipline and safety, leadership development, and specialized focus on teacher development to name a

few. Despite the additions, the district still spends less on district administration than 174 school districts across the state. After opening its tenth regular high school in 2014, the district will now be down one elementary school after the closing of McDonough Elementary. The building housing the former elementary school now houses the new EXCEL Academy, formerly known as Patrick Henry Academy. Seven schools will welcome new leaders this fall. Dutchtown Elementary, East Lake Elementary, Hampton Elementary Charter, Locust Grove Elementary, Smith-Barnes Elementary, Eagle’s Landing Middle, and Union Grove High School have new principals ready to step in and replace the many great leaders who have assumed new roles or retired. The district also continues its 2020 vision push towards all schools being personalized learning schools in the next five to six years. Henry County Schools’ vision for personalized learning is that learners must play an active role and be given significant voice and choice related to what, when, where, and how they learn. Learners must be active, self-regulated participants in the development and design of their learning and should co-create their learning plans based on their interests, strengths, passions, and aspirations. Teachers play an even more essential role in helping students with their learning due to classroom instruction designs resulting in opportunities for more one-on-one interaction. With prudent leadership, development, and planning, Henry County Schools is poised to continue its role as a district offering its citizens and students one of the top educational experiences in the state. This all is possible while operating with sound fiscal management geared towards ensuring schools, teachers, and students have the tools necessary to achieve academic success.

“Being a chamber member from the very beginning of our existence was never a question. The first thing we did when we moved to Henry County and opened our new business was join the Chamber. The contacts we have made in our community would not have been possible without our involvement with the chamber. Part I of this series (June 2015 newsletter) introduced the idea of pairing junior level employees with senior leaders in order grow your organization and even build competitive advantage. This second installment addresses the concern that many small business owners have regarding the investment of limited resources on developing people with no guarantee of a return. Training and development programs such as internships, apprenticeships, mentorships, and sponsorships certainly take time, attention, and capital to build and sustain. But rather than look at them as luxuries, here are four reasons why you cannot afford to put off formally developing these programs any longer.

Youth Leadership Henry
Tomorrow’s Leaders, Today “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” —John F. Kennedy The Youth Leadership Henry program takes a class of 40 or so High School sophomores; selected from a pool of Henry County applicants from public, private, home, and virtual schools, and helps them learn about the various aspects of citizenship in our community. They learn about the importance of teamwork; and the impact of education, public safety, healthcare, and government on our community. One of the best takeaways is an analysis of the impact that past decisions made by community leaders have had on Henry County; and tying that into decisions that current and future leaders will make about issues such as transportation infrastructure, technology investment, and workforce development. The class then takes what they have learned, and apply it to their service project. This project is a Job Fair in which the purpose is to benefit our community, especially the youth of Henry County. This event will be run by the class; giving an opportunity for young people to apply and interview for after school, seasonal, full-time (for those graduating seniors!), and upcoming work-based learning internships. An optional activity for interested class members is the opportunity to take part in a Board of Directors meeting of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. Participants have an opportunity to meet political, business, and community leaders while learning about corporate governance and parliamentary procedure.

The Henry County Chamber of Commerce held its monthly Business Booster Luncheon in the beautiful Hudgins Room at the Chamber. The luncheon focused on the importance of Social Media and using it for the Benefit of a Small Business. Nate Miller, Digital Marketing Consultant and Sales Rep for Pipeline Social Media Solutions, joined us at the June Business Boosters luncheon with some greats examples of how to leverage social media for business. Nate’s informative presentation included a description of the latest social media platforms businesses are using - such as Twitter, and Facebook, - that not only help the business with promotion but can help improve businesses’ bottom line. He explained that many businesses struggle to adopt more advanced social media-friendly practices until it can be demonstrated that, long term, it will be cost effective.

FINANCIAL FOCUS What Are Your Excuses for Not Investing? We all make excuses. Most of the time, they’re pretty harmless. But you could be hurting yourself if you make excuses for not taking action in some areas — and one of those areas is investing.

Not investing, or not investing enough, can have serious consequences. In fact, a lot of people are poorly prepared financially for retirement. Consider these figures from the Federal Reserve: The median retirement account value for individuals between 35 and 44 is just $42,700; for people 55 to 64, the corresponding figure is $103,000. These figures are frighteningly low, especially when retirement can easily last two or three decades.

Having More Retirement Accounts is Not the Same as Having More Money. When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better” is not necessarily true. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees.

Bringing your accounts to Edward Jones could help solve all that. Plus, one statement can make it easier to see if you’re moving toward your goals. *Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.
a retirement plan such as a 401(k) or something similar, you’ve already got a great place to begin. You only need to sign up for the plan and start deferring a part of your salary, and you’re an investor. It’s also quite easy to open an IRA, another popular retirement savings account. In any case, if you have doubts about how to get started investing, you will find it valuable to meet with a qualified investment professional. Don’t let excuses get in the way of developing good investment habits. With time, determination and effort, you can overcome many of the obstacles you thought prevented you from becoming a full-fledged investor.
