Together… Let’s Commend Our Educators
This is a wonderful time of year….for most! Summer is beginning. Students are graduating. Most Teachers are getting a break and parents are most likely sending their children off to Summer Camp Programs. The HCCC’s participation in TIP also gives our new teachers an opportunity to experience the support and engagement of our local businesses in education. We as a chamber hope to inspire new teachers to remain in the teaching profession and to continue educating the future workforce of our county and state.

If someone told you that there was a contest and they came in third, would you be impressed? It sounds impressive, but wouldn’t you want to know how many entered the contest. If there were 500 entries and the person came in third, that’s really something. If there were 3 entries and the person came in third, that’s mediocre. The first rule to remember is that numbers are relative. Knowing a number means nothing unless you compare it to something else. If I told you my company made $1M this year, you’d need to compare it to last year’s revenue before you would know if $1M was good. The

It’s probably not worth the same thing When looking at your now. financial statements, Second, if your P&L just know that you must shows you made $25,000 compare the results with in Net Profit last year, the previous period’s where’s the money? Just results, or maybe compare because your books say the results with each you made it, it doesn’t other (especially when mean you have cash for looking at the Profit & it. Youth Leadership Henry
Leadership Henry Graduation
The summer break for our high school students is nearly half over. Those of us “glass half full” folks are saying “you’ve got over half of your summer break left”. Either way, there’s still plenty of time left in this summer break for our students to be planning for what they will choose to be involved in during the upcoming year. Many are thinking about exploring new electives, extracurricular activities, volunteer opportunities, honors programs and the like. We hope that our rising sophomores are thinking about applying for membership in the Youth Leadership Henry class, a program of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce.
The culmination of a spectacular year for Leadership Henry took place at Eagle’s Landing Country Club on Tuesday, May 12. Graduation night offered a chance for food, fellowship, and reflection on the year that was for the Class of 2015.
Time to Apply Yourself
Regular readers of the HenryCounty.com insert in the Henry Herald have seen updates on the monthly leadership development and community information sessions that members of this program participate in. They learn deeply about public safety, education, healthcare, economic development, and government in our community. They hear about the history of our county on our bus tour of the community, where our County Historian ties the past to the present and the future, helping them see the impact of the decisions leaders have made and will make. They apply their leadership skills by hosting a county-wide youth job fair in the spring, giving Henry County young people an opportunity to have access to a variety of firms that are hiring for after school, seasonal, full-time, and WBL internships. If you know a rising High School sophomore that is a resident of Henry County (public, private, home-school, virtual school are all fine) and wants to learn more about leadership and our community, they can apply to be a member of this upcoming class. All they need to do is visit youthleadershiphenry.com. The “about” tab has a link to our online application, as well as a video with tips for filling it out, and even a copy of the questions to have in advance of actually submitting the application. There is only one piece of paper involved (verifying permission and numeric GPA) – everything else is electronic. The online applications will be taken through August 26. We encourage applicants to start the process during the summer, while you have plenty of time to thoughtfully and completely answer the application questions, solicit references, get approval and verification signatures. Most years we have between 130 and 150 applicants, for 40 class slots; so it is VERY competitive. Interested applicants should check their calendar to ensure their availability at the mandatory class meetings: September 29, 2015

The program included a couple of special presentations in addition to the presentation of plaques and other special items to each class member. The first special recognition was the Ed Bridges Community Service Award. Current Leadership Henry Board Member and next year’s Board Chair Pam Milling was the recipient for her widespread involvement in community/social organizations and her tireless efforts with the CURE Childhood Cancer organization. The Joyce Rodgers Heart of Henry Award was the next honor shared and is designated for a current class member who stood out amongst his or her peers. The award is voted on the by the current class, and this year’s award was given to Mike Briscoe.
Pam Milling shares comments after receiving the Ed Bridges Community Service Award.
Mike Briscoe is congratulated by Joyce Rodgers, namesake of the Heart of Henry Award.
Chamber of Commerce President David Gill provided the keynote message to the class and challenged and inspired class members to take what they have learned and put it to good use in Henry County. While this was the end of the program for this year’s class, the Class of 2016 will be announced soon! A special thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers who made the Leadership Henry Class of 2015 possible. We could not have as great of a program without the support!

Effective Networking Alisa Kirk, Area Director, Clayton State University SBDC, gave chamber members a breakdown of how to effectively network by showing them how to make real connections that build relationships, and how to use tools such as LinkedIn to maintain the relationship. The members even had the opportunity to practice these techniques on each other through various exercises and discussions. By the end, it was clear that the chamber members left this program more informed about networking effectively. As if that was not enough, the lunch catered by The Walton’s Home Cooking was amazing! Henry County Chamber of Commerce
hosts the 15th Annual
Golf Classic Monday September 28th, 2015 Eagle’s Landing Country Club
Planning has started for this year’s Golf Classic. After an extremely successful tournament last year, we are anticipating an even better event in 2015. The event will be held at Eagle’s Landing Country Club again this year, and is scheduled for Monday, September 28th. Sponsorships are currently available, including the prestigious Presenting Sponsor. If your business is looking to make a big splash in 2015, being the Presenting Sponsor of the Golf Classic is a great way to get your business name in front of the community. Other sponsor levels are available, and the sooner you sign up the more marketing opportunities you will have. Visit our new HCCC Golf Classic Site at http://bit.do/hcccgolfclassic and look for our 2015 Golf Classic sponsorship package in your email and at upcoming Chamber events. If you, or someone from your company, would like to assist in planning the event, then consider joining our Golf Committee. We are always looking for new ideas to make this event even more enjoyable for the players, and beneficial for the sponsors. • Presenting Sponsor (Exclusive) $7500 • Tee Box Sponsor $4000 (Exclusive) • Putting Green Sponsor $4000 (Exclusive) • Flag Sponsor $4000 (Exclusive) SOLD • Gold Sponsor $2500 • Score Card Sponsor $2000 (Exclusive) SOLD • Silver Sponsor $1500 • Team of Four $800 • Tent Exhibitor $500 • Hole Sponsor $150
Chamber Connections is a fun and informal group of the chamber’s ambassadors and volunteers. The group meets once a month from 9:30 - 11:30am at various business locations. Ambassadors serve as a liaison between the Chamber and its members, and continually strive to improve the level of personal customer service Chamber members receive. Ambassadors assist members in fully recognizing the benefits of membership. Ambassadors further assist the Chamber in gaining a better understanding of members’ business needs and in developing services to meet those needs.

Henry County Tourism Launches Marketing Grant Program The Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) has unveiled a new grant program aimed at helping tourism partners in qualifying areas with new or expanded marketing initiatives to attract more visitors from outside Henry County. The Henry County Tourism Marketing Grant is a program of the CVB that offers partner businesses and organizations assistance funding new marketing initiatives to extend the advertising reach for an established tourism event. Additionally, a qualifying not-for-profit business (or in limited circumstances, a for-profit business) can apply for assistance to develop or improve its website, create additional marketing material or implement other visitor solicitation strategies. Applicants can apply for up to $5,000 per quarter for specific projects. “The goal of this program is to better equip our partners to market themselves and help us collectively put Henry County’s best foot forward,” said Laura Luker, Director of Tourism for the Henry County CVB. “We recognize that what we do on their behalf can only be as effective as their own marketing. It is all about enhancing the visitors’ experience and that experience starts in the planning stages.”
The CVB is using this program as a way to leverage what the CVB is already doing while extending what the partners are able to do in a way that is mutually beneficial. No one takes a vacation in a vacuum. If visitors come to see the “BLT” at Noah’s Ark or the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, they are likely going to sleep, eat, shop or get gas during the trip. Through the grant program the CVB hopes to broaden the reach of its partners in a way that expands that ripple effect. The Henry County CVB launched the “Henry County Treasure App” earlier this year as a way to encourage visitors to explore Henry County’s treasures and hidden gems. Through the app, exposure to one attraction triggers another and then another and that is what the CVB is hoping to achieve with the grant program. “Henry County is full of treasures, some gems just need help with the polish to make them shine,” states Luker. All application criteria can be sent to interested parties by contacting lluker@henrycounty.com or (770) 9575786. The deadline for grant applications is July 15 for third quarter 2015 events and marketing efforts.
