A strength of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is its volunteer leadership, and no better example of exemplary leadership can be found than outgoing Chairman Eddie Ausband. While his “day jobs” include serving as President of his Nationwide insurance agency, The Ausband Agency, as well as CEO of the Revanta Financial Group, LLC, Eddie has always found the time to serve the Chamber. Following multiple years on the Board of
Directors, Eddie served as Chair elect in 2012 and Chairman for 2013. He turns over his gavel to incoming Chairman Charlie Scott, but will continue his service for an additional year as Past Chairman. In his capacity as Chairman, Eddie not only chaired the monthly Board and Executive Committee meetings, he represented the Chamber at Regional Business Coalition Board meetings and on the Atlanta Regional Commission LINK trip. He attended network-

ing events, committee meetings, planning sessions and the annual Chamber Intergovernmental Retreat. Not only the Chamber, but all of Henry County, has benefited from his service. We thank Eddie for the generous gift of his time and talents. The Chamber had an active year under Eddie’s leadership. During his tenure, the Chamber transitioned to a new President and CEO, saw the ground-breaking of building one of Southern Crescent Technical College’s Henry County campus, and was instrumental in the passage of SPLOST IV. In 2013, the Chamber continued its focus on Education, and remained a civic leader with the successful Intergovernmental retreat focused on economic development. Whether attending meetings at the state level or addressing interested groups of voters, Eddie has proven leadership qualities. That ability will serve him well as he goes on to represent Henry County as the Citizen District
Monday, February 10, is Henry County Day at the Capitol. Chamber members are encouraged to post their job openings on the Chamber website? One of the top three reasons people visit www.henrycounty.com is to find a job – make sure they find YOURS!
This annual event, co-hosted by the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and the Henry County Development Authority, affords our business and civic leaders an opportunity to visit the state capitol and to meet with legislators involved in decision making processes that impact Henry County. It also provides an opportunity to showcase Henry County attractions and products to this audience of state officials. To attend or to donate local gift items, contact the Chamber at 770-957-5786.

On behalf of the members and staff of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, we salute Eddie Ausband and say “Thanks for a job well done, Mr. Chairman!” We extend our best wishes for all new endeavors and are pleased that you will continue to represent and support Henry County. Chairman’s Message Strength in Numbers
Charlie Scott
Many of the sayings that you’ve heard all your life really ring true, like “two heads are better than one” and “there is strength in numbers.” Those sayings also apply to Chamber membership. A single small business owner may feel that alone they can’t “fight city hall” by getting a law changed or passing a vote. However, as a member of a larger organization, such as the Chamber of Commerce, like-minded business owners can have a voice that gets heard. The Chamber advocates for just such members. Even as a Chamber, we prefer not to “go it all alone. When we band together with other county agencies such as the county’s Board of Commissioners, the Henry County Development Authority, or other organizations, desired results are usually easier to accomplish. In Henry County we promote the “One Henry” concept of working collectively for the greater good – which is better for the business owners of the county, as well as for residents. On February 10, we plan to go as “One Henry” to the state capitol to meet the 2014 legislative delegation, to take the opportunity to express our appreciation for accomplishments they have or may achieve on our behalf, as well as to give voice to our priorities.
Henry County is blessed to have outstanding representation and leaders at the state level and our presence will demonstrate our continued support for them. Henry County will make its presence known throughout the Capitol February 10 -- from the pace car on the lawn of the Capitol (reflecting our pride in having the largest outdoor sporting venue in the southeast right here in Henry County), to the baked goods at the coffee urns throughout the Capitol building (all homemade by ladies of Henry County), to the various local items placed in the 250 gift bags state workers will receive. We plan to tell the great story of Henry County, its people, products and attractions. Isn’t that what we should strive to do in our jobs each and every day – to represent our county in the best way possible? To dem-

onstrate the high quality of goods and services our county produces? To bring about even greater industries, business and products? After all, we diligently work through various initiatives like E2: Economics and Education to continually improve our education system, to attract and retain a quality workforce, and to bring desirable businesses to Henry County. Working together we achieved great goals like securing a campus of Southern Crescent Technical College, which is now working on plans for a second building. Together we work to improve transportation issues and effect changes like improved throughput on Interstate 75 with the managed lanes project. Working together we passed SPLOST IV to improve transportation and parks – enhancing our quality of life. There is another saying, “there is no ‘I’ in teamwork” - which is why business owners join the Chamber – because Chamber membership affords an opportunity to work collectively with an organization that represents their voice. On a larger scale, working together, the Chamber of Commerce and other countywide organizations can dream big and attain loftier goals for both the business community and the citizens of Henry County. We are, after all, “One Henry.”

Business Profile
State Farm Insurance • Brian Brakefield, Owner About the Company Brian graduated from Griffin High School in 1993 and attended Clayton State University while serving in the Army National Guard from 1994 to 2004. He served on the Clayton County Police Department from 2000 to 2005. That’s when his career in insurance began. He spent two years with Georgia Farm Bureau before making a move to State Farm Corporation in 2007. Brian started his agency in Henry County in 2010 with the mission to serve as an honest provider of insurance and financial services. He promises to provide a professional and friendly environment for our growing and multicultural community, helping his neighbors to achieve their financial dreams and to recover from the unexpected. The agency employs three full-time and two part-time associates. His agency is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial advisors (NAIFA) and it has earned their National Sales Award as well as their Quality Award. He was named to the Chairman’s Circle in 2010 (an honor that only 1% of State Farm agents achieve). He was named one of the Top 100 Agents nationwide that same year. Brian continues his education by attending American College where he received his LUTCF and is currently pursuing his CLU. Community Support Brian has a passion for helping others. His business welcomes not only those in need of insurance,
but also those who need to send a fax or seek the services of a notary. One result of his experience as a former member of the military and police force, is his great passion for providing support for such heros: fire fighters, police and military. Brian is the Founding President of Georgia’s Wounded Heroes, a non-profit he organized to support both military and civil servants recovering from service-related injury. (To learn more about this organization, visit www. georgiaswoundedheroes.com.) Brian also serves in the Lovejoy Kiwanis Club, is the Treasurer for the American Legion Hampton Post; the Director of the Henry County Veterans Coalition; and is an active member of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. He sponsors many children’s groups, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and a number of ball teams. When Girl Scout Troop 11306 needed to learn more about their country and the sacrifices our Veterans make they turned to Brian. Brian truly enjoyed discussing what it means to be an American, a veteran and why we have the greatest country on earth. Brian was honored to tell the personal stories of the men and women behind each of the flags displayed in his office. In December, Brian worked closely with other local businesses to host Toys For Hampton, where local children were given a toy, treats and a visit with Santa. In fact, he has pledged to serve as a lifetime sponsor of the Santa and His Reindeer Team

that participate each year in the Hampton Christmas Parade. Brian and his wife, Kate, along with son, Mac, are residents of Locust Grove and active members of St. James Catholic Church in McDonough. Chamber Involvement According to Brian, “By being a member of the Chamber I am constantly exposed to other professionals and business owners and that kind of exposure helps me to stay focused on my business goals and my business acumen and to maintain a consistent level of professionalism.” “Participating in the Chamber also provides me with an outlet to expand my philanthropic footprint through marketing my personal passion for helping others and learning about others as well,” says Brian. The Henry County Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber Ambassadors honored one of their own by awarding the 2013 Chamber Ambassador of the Year distinction to Nicole Elkins, Branch Manager at Heritage Bank’s Eagle’s Landing location. Nicole has served as a volunteer with the Chamber for many years. In addition to her work with the Ambassadors, she also serves on the Chamber’s Membership Committee. Nicole participated in most of the ribbon cutting ceremonies and Chamber Connection Visits in 2013. She also volunteered at
the Chamber’s Annual Golf Classic, Membership Appreciation Luncheon, New Member Reception, Membership Campaign and many other Chamber events throughout the year. Nicole was instrumental in securing a lunch sponsor for the Chamber’s first New Member Orientation Lunch held in 2013. She also participated in the New Member Mentoring Program. Nicole is always more than willing to help whenever asked, and is the definition of an Ambassador for the Chamber!

Where Do You Look for New Customers? by Alisa Kirk, Area Director, Clayton State University Small Business Development Center I work with a lot of small business owners, and I can’t recall any of them ever saying they don’t want new customers. Even though most entrepreneurs could use more customers, many don’t re-examine their target markets periodically to see if they’re still hitting the mark. While a market is anyone who might buy your product or service, a target market is the group(s) that you are specifically targeting with your marketing and positioning. As you seek to expand your target markets, here are a few groups to consider:
1) Your current customers. Yes, you’ve already got them, but have you asked them for referrals? Do you follow up with them when they make a big purchase from you? Also, do you take another look at them periodically to see which of your current customers are really making most of the purchases? 2) Your competitors’ customers. This is where knowing how you’re different from your competitors will be important: if you have a competitive advantage that is definable, then let potential customers know about it. If they’re unhappy with their present products or services, let them know how you’ll solve their problems. 3) People with specific reasons not to buy what you sell. If you know specific reasons that people don’t buy from you or hire you, you can address those concerns.
As an independent insurance agency, Strawn & Co., Insurance is free to focus on what really counts: providing your family and/ or business with the most comprehensive coverages and competitive premiums available. This type of focus for our customers has kept Strawn & Co., Insurance one of the leading providers of property, casualty, life & health insurance in south Atlanta.
If things have changed for your business, let them know. I recently returned to a restaurant that I hadn’t visited in years after I heard that the restaurant was under new management. The food and service were greatly improved and I’ll keep going back. 4) People who need what you sell or do, but aren’t aware of it. This is where marketing comes in. You can’t depend on people to find you either in person or on the web if they don’t know that your service exists. In this case, the right marketing will need an educational component to it - tell them what your product or service does, and how it will help them. The SBDC exists to assist small business owners, and we can help you with your target marketing analysis. Contact us for further information.

Leadership Henry Community Day The Leadership Henry Class of 2014 spent an intensive day learning about the community during their class meeting on January 15. Many local non-profit organizations explained their respective missions to the class during a morning information session at the McDonough Community Room, increasing class member awareness of the work that these passionate folks do behind the scenes to make our community a better place. After hearing about service opportunities in Henry County, the class went to see a few of the local organizations that serve our citizens. While visiting Heritage Park, the class was able to tour the community gardens, visit the military museum, and the wall of honor. Staff at each site explained their history and operation, broadening each class member’s understanding of our heritage in this appropriately named park. After a wonderful lunch by Farmhouse Catering that was sponsored by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the class went to A Friend’s House to learn about the way this organization helps children who need a temporary place to call home. After touring the facility and seeing the incredible work that they do at AFH,
the class went to see how another Henry County organization helps feed folks who can’t afford the basic necessity of food. Helping In His Name food pantry provides people who may not know where their next meal is coming from with food. Nola Love took the class members on a tour of their facility and showed class members how donations from businesses, schools, churches, and individuals are used. From receiving to distribution, class members got to see how this operation helps meet a need that most of us take for granted. It was an eye-opening experience to see the scale of this one
organization and the need that it fills in our community. Leadership Henry class members spend one day a month in intensive explorations of various facets of our community’s life. If this article piqued your interest and made you want to learn more about our community, why not apply for membership in the Class of 2015? The Board of Directors is finalizing the calendar for next year’s class and the online application will be available in mid-February. Maximize Your Chamber Membership!
Boosters luncheon
February Business Boosters Luncheon Healthcare Updates Henry County Chamber Hudgins Room February 20, 2014 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
The January 16 Business Boosters Luncheon program was conducted by Chamber staff members, Gary Sparrow and Diane Ide as they walked the more than 70 attendees through various benefits of Chamber membership – many of which are going untapped by most of the membership. According to Gary, “it only takes applying one or two of the right member benefits to recoup the cost of membership dues.” “It only takes making the right connection with another member to obtain business that can help you to reap even more,” he said. And there were a few testimonials to that effect! Chamber membership affords both tangible and intangible benefits. Your business image is elevated. People looking for a business view Chamber
members as more reputable. Other, more tangible, benefits include many and various methods of marketing your business, networking opportunities, filling your open positions and increasing potential revenue by offering discounts. The Chamber helps to market your business via ribbon cuttings that appear in the Henry Daily Herald twice, and are placed on the Chamber’s website and Facebook page; multiple networking opportunities through Business After Hours, Business Boosters Luncheons, and special events. “Every Chamber member enjoys a presence on the Chamber website,” says Diane, “and we post the items you send us to Facebook – we market our members – at no cost.” Ms. Ide reminded members, however,
Gary Sparrow Explains the Value of Member Benefits

We tried to prepare for healthcare reform. We saw deadlines for healthcare come and go. We watched and attempted to use systems that failed before they began to work. Some people saw their health insurance policies cancelled. • Does all of this leave you a bit confused about the state of healthcare today? • Do you have questions about Obamacare? • Do your employees have questions about Obamacare? If so, you will want to attend the February 20 Business Boosters Luncheon to hear about the state of things today and how healthcare changes may affect
that it’s up to them to make sure the Chamber has valid information about their business. Several programs Gary discussed have the potential to deliver cost savings to a business dealing with workers’ compensation, health and other types of insurance for employees, that offer discounts on office supplies, email communications, and other savings. The Chamber is always open to adding new membership benefits. Mellow Mushroom, located in Stockbridge, provided the delicious meal. Several participants won door prizes ranging from gift cards to a showerhead that plays music! To view all the photos from this luncheon, visit the Chamber’s Facebook page.

You no longer have to reach it via the Leadership Henry page (the adult program of Leadership Henry). In addition to its own url, this change allows for more youth-related information to be online, and makes it easier to navigate the content. Previously, it was not intuitive for persons interested in Youth Leadership Henry to get information specific to our program. Now, users can visit our new site at youthleadershiphenry.com and get information solely about the program for young people, see who is participating in the class, learn about the application process, and apply for
future classes (the next online application opens this spring). FINANCIAL FOCUS Investors Can Learn Much from Super Bowl Teams It’s Super Bowl time again. And whether you’re a sports fan or not, you can probably learn something from the Super Bowl teams that you can apply to other endeavors – such as investing. What might these lessons be? Take a look: • Pick players carefully. Super Bowl teams don’t usually get there out of luck; they’ve made it in part because they have carefully chosen their players. And to potentially achieve success as an investor, you, too, need carefully chosen “players” – investments that are chosen for your individual situation. • Choose a diversified mix of players. Not only do Super Bowl teams have good players, but they have good ones at many different positions – and these players tend to play well together. As an investor, you should own a variety of investments with different capabilities – such as stocks for growth and bonds for income – and your various
investments should complement, rather than duplicate, one another. Strive to build a diversified portfolio containing investments appropriate for your situation, such as stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other vehicles. Diversifying your holdings may help reduce the effects of market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) • Follow a “game plan.” Super Bowl teams are skilled at creating game plans designed to maximize their own strengths and exploit their opponents’ weaknesses. When you invest, you also can benefit from a game plan – a strategy to help you work toward your goals. This strategy may incorporate several elements, such as taking full advantage of your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored
retirement plan, pursuing new investment opportunities as they arise and reviewing your portfolio regularly to make sure it’s still appropriate for your needs. • Stay dedicated to your goals. Virtually all Super Bowl teams have had to overcome obstacles, such as injuries, bad weather and a tough schedule. But through persistence and a constant devotion to their ultimate goal, they persevere. As an investor, you’ll face some challenges, too, such as political and economic turmoil that can upset the financial markets. But if you own a diversified mix of quality investments and follow a long-term strategy that’s tailored to your objectives, time horizon and risk tolerance, you can keep moving forward, despite the “bumps in the road” that all investors face. • Get good coaching. Super Bowl teams typically are well-coached, with disciplined

head coaches and innovative offensive and defensive coordinators. When you’re trying to achieve many financial goals – such as a comfortable retirement, control over your investment taxes and a legacy to leave to your family – you, too, can benefit from strong “coaching.” As your “head coach,” you might choose a financial professional – someone who can help you identify your goals and recommend an appropriate investment strategy to help you work toward them. And your financial professional can coordinate activities with your other “coaches,” such as your tax and legal advisors. Unless you’re a professional football player, you won’t ever experience what it’s like to play in the Super Bowl. However, achieving your financial goals can be a fairly big event in your life – and to help work toward that point, you can take a few tips from the teams that have made it to the Big Game.
