YOUR BUSINESS IS OUR BUSINESS

Chamber Offers Summer Stimulus Plan When summer hits, the mercury isn’t the only thing that rises. Many families see summer as an expensive time with kids out of school and in need of activities. This year the Henry County Chamber wants to offer some assistance in managing the high cost of summer. Here’s a guide to applying the Chamber’s “Summer Stimulus Plan.”

Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Locust Grove has made national and even international news in the last month with feature stories on the Today Show, NBC Nightly News and E! Online, starring the “BLT” or Bear, Lion and Tiger family. This amazing animal sanctuary is home to more than 1,200 animals and the best part is it’s free! Take a picnic and prepare to spend a fun day at Noah’s Ark.

round including their $5 track tour that includes 2 laps around the track. During the summer the track comes alive with Thursday Thunder and Friday Night Drags racing events. These are great events for the whole family and incredibly affordable at less than $8 for adults.

Disc golf is a sport growing in popularity and Henry County is lucky enough to have one of the premier courses in the Atlanta area. Go to any sporting goods store and pick up a “disc” (it is not a standard Frisbee) and head to J.P. Moseley Park for a FREE “round of golf” that the whole family can enjoy.

cobbler recipe and dust it off. Southern Belle Farm and Yule Forest Highway 155 both offer You-Pick blackberries and blueberries. For less than $15 you can pick a gallon of berries then take the party home as you use your harvest to bake with your kids!

Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 1970 UH1 Huey Helicopter. Heritage Village features an old train engine that kids can climb. The museum at Nash Farm has an extensive collection of artifacts from the Civil War, but they also have a children’s room where kids can try on period clothes to see what they would have looked like 150 years ago. These are great free options for when it is too hot or rainy to be outside, plus who said education cannot be fun!

There are more than 40 trains that pass through Locust Grove each day and now the new Locust Grove Train Watching Platform gives you and your train enthusiasts a place to watch them in comfort while listening to the conductors talk over the speakers. If train watching makes you hungry or an attack of the sweet tooth hits, walk across the street to the French Market and check out their new dessert menu!

Museums may not sound fun to kids but we think they will really be excited by Atlanta Motor Speedway is best these attractions. Heritage Park Veterans known for hosting NASCAR racing Museum has an incredible collection of You Pick, I Pick, We all Pick Berries! events, but they also have events year military vehicles including an ambulance, Find your grandmother’s classic blueberry

Here’s another idea for when the heat or weather drives you indoors. Make sure to grab some friends as these activities are best enjoyed in groups. Gather a group of fearless crusaders and take on Fun Bowl’s new laser tag facility before bowling a few games. Pin Strikes in Stockbridge offers “Kids Bowl Free” specials for the summer with a laser maze and bumper cars also onsite. If you follow this “stimulus plan,” for less than two days at Disney World or a week at the beach you can provide a summer’s worth of things to see and do for the whole family. It’s a winwin – local money stays local and residents are saved the time, gas and frustration of long or expensive trips. This stimulus may not come with a refund, but you will feel like you got a raise with all the money you save. While many of the attractions listed are free to visit they do subsist on donations and any contribution would be welcome. For a list of all Henry County has to offer, including upcoming events, visit www.visithenrycountygeorgia.com.

Chairman’s Message

Your passport to fun right here at home! CHARLIE SCOTT

As summer goes into full swing, families are often looking for “Family Friendly” entertainment. You may not be aware of how much there is to do right here at home, with many of these entertainment options very easy on the family budget. If your taste runs to weekend mountain trails or camping, the park at Panola Mountain may be just the thing for you. The centerpiece of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, the park is conveniently located and costs only $5.00 for daily parking. Looking for high speed adventure? Atlanta Motor Speedway, located in Hampton is one of the country’s premiere motor sports venues. From high thrill racing as a spectator to on the track driving schools and events, AMS is just a short drive from anywhere in Henry County. If you are a NASCAR fan, or just have a natural curiosity, for $5.00 you can tour the facility and enjoy a couple of laps around the track. Thursday Night Thunder allows you and your family to see and enjoy a different style of racing. And the cost for a family of 4 is less than a couple of movie tickets. Friday Night Drags at AMS offers another unique entertainment opportunity, with ticket prices of only $8.00 for adults. For a change in your golf game, Henry County boasts one of the country’s premiere Frisbee (disc) golf courses. A short drive

to Moseley Park on Miller’s Mill Road in Stockbridge brings you to the course. A great afternoon of fun and exercise, and best of all, it is free. For a little more action, try paintball or BMX racing, both are readily available right here in your home county. For history buffs, there is Heritage Park in McDonough, GA. While adults may appreciate the Veteran’s Wall of Honor, the children will certainly enjoy the Heritage Village and all will be duly impressed with the military museum. Again, this attraction is easily accessible and can be viewed without cost. Another great asset of our community is Nash Farm Park. This historical location is the site of the last great cavalry battle of the Civil War. Admission to this is free and the volunteer guides can not only talk about the battle, but who can introduce your family to life in the late 1800’s in Henry County. This is well worth a day’s visit. For a great adventure for the whole family, enjoy a visit to Noah’s Ark, located in Locust Grove. The world famous animal sanctuary is open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 3:00 p.m. depending on weather. With over 1,200 animals on site, there is something to appeal to the entire family. As for cost, admission is free with donations solicited to help defray the $33,000 monthly cost to feed and shelter these animals. This is the only place in the world to see a lion, tiger and bear living together. These three, who are world famous and have been recently featured on national news programs are only one of the great signature attractions. While you are in Locust Grove, don’t miss the train watching platform located in downtown. If you are a train or railroad fan, this is a do not miss facility. Do you want to experience an actual farm in operation? Southern Belle Farm in McDonough has a number of family

friendly activities during much of the year. A visit to the corn maze at Southern Belle Farm should become a fall family tradition. The pumpkin patch at Yule Forest Hwy 155 is another great agricultural attraction right here at home. Would you like for your children to experience the thrill of picking their own peaches and other produce? You cannot get fresher fruit than what you pick yourself right off of the tree and it can be a great day of family fun, and there are youpick locations in Henry County. The Henry County Parks and Recreation Department manages thousands of acres of park and recreational facilities in Henry County. There are an abundance of summer and fall programs that have signup opportunities right now. If you are looking for organized sports, there are programs for youth and adults. With more than 30 parks there is sure to be one easily accessible if you want to simply enjoy the parks on your own. There are even dog parks where your four footed friends can cavort and have the opportunity for a sniff and greet. You can get more information about these programs or download and print a pdf map of the over 30 parks available to you at www.hcprd.org. While there is a modest fee for some programs, use of the parks is free and very family friendly. If your idea of weekend relaxation is great food and drink with friends, try a new restaurant or for something different, pay a visit to JailHouse Brewing Company in Hampton. You may find that weekend getaway is right outside your door. The Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau has information on these and other Henry County attractions online at www. visithenrycountygeorgia.com. I encourage all to stay and enjoy what Henry County has to offer, and you may find that summer may just be too short to enjoy it all.

Business Profile Express Employment Professionals

About the Company Express Employment Professionals is a staffing company that helps nearly 300,000 people find jobs each year, and businesses connect with the people and human resource services they need. The Express Company helps people find jobs through a network of over 600 offices and franchise locations in the United States, Canada and South Africa. Each Express Employment Professionals office is locally owned, operated and backed by the expertise and support of an international headquarters, meaning Express is large enough to meet ones employment needs and yet small enough to care. Their company mission is to help hardworking people and businesses succeed by bringing together talent and opportunity. Commonly, when most think of a staffing company the assumption is that it is just another “temp” service which provides companies with workers intended to fill short-term assignments. Unlike those common “temp” agencies, Express Employment Professionals offer companies and workers with a full-range of Human Resource (HR) solutions. Express offers a variety of services, such as temporary staffing, evaluation, professional search and human resource services. They help companies fulfill their HR needs by placing people in a variety of positions, from light industrial to administrative and professional, while simultaneously helping clients develop a long-term staffing strategy to align with their long-term goals. Express Employment Professionals was first established in Henry County in 1999 and now has five full-time and two part-time employees. Demeris Berner is the General Manager and Partner of Express Employment Professionals of the McDonough, Griffin, Thomaston and LaGrange locations and has served with Express for the past eighteen years. For thirteen years she managed the McDonough branch, located at 1141 Meredith Park Drive. Demeris has served in a variety of capacities within Express Employment Professionals in Henry County and other various Express locations. Her experience includes onsite help managing client employees and leading internal employees. Today, she serves as the partner and acting general manager of four Express locations that are consistently ranked in the top 10% of Express offices nationwide where she uses her experience and HenryChamber-July.indd 3

abilities to creatively solve problems, lead people and demand accountability. Community Support Express Employment Professionals of Henry County is active in the community. In addition to providing quality job staffing for people seeking employment and business owners, they also give back to the community with their involvement in organizations such as Society of Human Resources, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and the Children’s Miracle Network. Chamber Involvement The Express staffing company became a member of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce in 1996. When asked the value of Chamber membership, Demeris answered that, “Being a Chamber member in Henry County offers Express the opportunity to stay connected and updated with what is happening in the community. Our Chamber is very active in supporting and promoting the local businesses and their needs. They offer educational events that create the opportunity for businesses to network and get to know each other.” For more information about Express Employment Professionals Contact Demeris Berner 770-957-0919 Demeris.berner@expresspros.com Or visit their company website at: www.expresspros.com

Business Opportunities in Georgia’s Film and Television Industry (Part II of a III-Part Series)

Judiffier Pearson, Business Consultant Clayton State University SBDC Part I of this series provided an overview of the impact of film and television production in Georgia. This installment will delve into how your business can become a “cameraready” or “film-friendly” vendor. In order to do business with productions, align your operations with these 6 best practices: Be Legit – Operating as a legal business entity should be a no-brainer, but it must be stressed. Your corporate infrastructure needs to be sound. Make sure your company has the appropriate and up-to-date permits, licenses, tax identification numbers, and commercial insurance. You can also set yourself apart from your competitors and make yourself easier to find with a professional website and social media presence. Get Listed – The Georgia Film and Television Sourcebook, published by Oz Publishing, is the go-to directory for production suppliers and support vendors. You should also check with the cameraready liaison at the Henry Chamber of Commerce about any internal listings for production vendor referrals. There are also online directories, such as FlipsFilm.com

that show vendors in the locations where productions are filming so unit production managers or department heads can buy local where possible. Connect with Decision-Makers – Department heads and local crewmembers have a considerable amount of input on their department’s budget and they look for local vendors. Connect with these industry professionals and market your services or products to them. You can contact the local film unions for crew contact information. Adopt Critical Success Factors and Production Etiquette • Speed, agility and flexibility are vital. Productions have unusual requests, aroundthe-clock hours, and tight schedules. Assign one point of contact in your business to handle all production inquiries and build industry relationships. • If you’re in a production zone, be aware of crew needs like barricades, portable structure rentals, food delivery and transportation. Plan ahead to accommodate the demand if those needs drive up sales for you. If productions in your area limit your business operations due to street closings, detours, or restrictions for residents/ businesses/ activities, then make

sure you, your employees, and customers are aware with contingency plans. Local film commission offices publish upcoming productions to help vendors and residents plan accordingly. • Don’t be star-struck and make celebrities feel uncomfortable. Be respectful and ask for permission before requesting photographs and autographs. • Understand that professionalism and relationships are non-negotiable in this industry. If your company builds a great reputation, word-of-mouth will spread and doors will open to do business with future productions. Work with Purchase Orders – Larger production companies handle purchases and rentals with Purchase Orders (PO’s). Submit invoices immediately and make sure you get paid before a production wraps or its local office closes. Otherwise, you will have to search for post-production contact information or contact the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office. To learn more about how your business can become film-friendly, please contact us at morrow@georgiasbdc.org, or call 678466-5100.

The Original Shane’s Rib Shack Hosted May Business After Hours

May 22 was a great day to be outdoors for the Business After Hours at The Original Shane’s Rib Shack on Highway 155. As Kyla and her crew served up delicious wings and things (and peach cobbler), Chamber members mingled at the picnic area and honed their networking skills. The Original Shane’s Rib Shack is where it all began for this great barbecue restaurant. Shane and Stacey Thompson have been serving up “Big Dad” barbecue sandwiches and more at this location for over 10

years. “It’s a family business,” said Kyla Tammaro, catering manager. “Their children are beginning to enter the business,” she reported. In addition to being great business entrepreneurs, the Thompsons are great stewards of our community. They were selected to receive the Chamber’s 2013 Business of the Year award for their contributions to Henry County. A record number of door prizes were given away, as at least half the attendees brought a door prize, making Business After Hours even

more fun. The following names were drawn for the $450 Chamber jackpot: Beebe Bhakta with Ramada Limited; Marilyn Durden, Durden Chiropractic Clinic; and Raj Parjkh with America’s Best Value Inn & Suites. Since they were not present to win, the jackpot increases by $50 for June to $500. To see more photos from the May 22 Business After Hours, visit www.henrycounty.com/pages/ PhotoGallery.

BOOSTERS LUNCHEON

Help the Chamber Welcome New Teachers to Henry County The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is proud to support Henry County Schools and teachers in pursuit of educational excellence by sponsoring the 2014 Teacher Induction Program (TIP) luncheon on July 24, 2014. The luncheon is part of a week-long orientation of new teachers to the Henry County School System. The Chamber sponsors this event to welcome the teachers to Henry County, but needs your help to make it a success. You can help by sponsoring the luncheon or donating promotional items.

Approximately 425 new teachers will soon be arriving to join the largest employer in Henry County. They not only will provide educational opportunities for our children, but will also have a significant impact on our local economy. We are asking Chamber members to help fund the TIP luncheon and provide items representing their businesses for teacher gift bags. A donation of 425 items will be needed for the gift bags. Below is TIP sponsorship information. All items for the gift bags must be received by noon on Friday, July 18, 2014.

Making Sense of Taxes The good news is that your property is probably increasing in value again. The bad news is that the increased property value may lead to increased property taxes. The Chamber’s May Business Boosters Lunch featured two of Henry County’s experts on real and personal property ad valorem taxes. Charlie Reddoch, Chief Appraiser for Henry County and David Curry the Henry County Tax Commissioner provided the information part of the program. With new assessments recently having been mailed, the participants at the lunch were able to hear from those most intimately involved in the process of assigning value to property and collection of taxes levied on that property once a millage rate is set. Based on Mr. Reddoch’s comments, many residents of the County can anticipate an increase in the assessed value of their property when they receive the tax

assessment notices that were mailed in late April. The appraisers are seeing consistent increases in property values based on all of the components that they use in setting value. Mr. Reddoch discussed the appraisal process, the assessment notices and the process for contesting an assessed value if the taxpayer disagrees with the assigned value. Mr. Reddoch also cautioned the group that the estimated tax amount included with the assessment notices was based on the previous year’s assessment and that the actual bill would be sent out once the millage rate was established by the County, the Cities and the Board of Education. David Curry discussed the tax collection process as well as hoped for enhancements that he hopes to make to the office, particularly to enhance the ease of obtaining car tags. Commissioner Curry clarified the roles of each of the groups involved in establishing the tax bill

and cautioned the group to recall that he only collects the taxes, and that he does not determine the amount of the tax bill. Commissioner Curry also indicated that tax collection for previous years were extremely high, well above the budgeted collection rate. As the County, Board of Education and some Cities use property tax revenue for general operations, and the collection rate impacts their ability to meet public obligations, the high collection rate serves to help keep taxes lower by ensuring that the municipal groups have sufficient operating funds and do not have to levy higher than anticipated tax rates in order to meet the government obligations.

FINANCIAL FOCUS Avoid Problems by Updating Beneficiary Designations Like many people, you might not particularly enjoy thinking about your estate plans, but such planning is necessary to make sure your assets go where you want them to go. And it’s just as important to regularly review your plans with your tax, legal and financial professionals in case any changes are needed. For instance, some of your wishes expressed in your will may be overridden by beneficiary designations you filled out years ago. If these designations become outdated, your assets could be passed to those you didn’t intend. You might be surprised at how many of your financial assets and legal documents have beneficiary 195822-1

designations tied to them. If you have an IRA, a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, a life insurance policy, an annuity, a transfer-on-death (TOD) arrangement, or any of a variety of other assets or accounts, you almost certainly named a beneficiary. And this beneficiary designation offers a simple, direct and efficient way to get assets in the hands of your loved ones who survive you. However, as time goes by, you may experience many changes in your life — and when your life changes, your beneficiary designations may need to follow. But if you are like many people, you might forget to update these designations after a

marriage, divorce or other change in your family situation. And because the beneficiary designation is a legally binding document, the asset will go to the person you once named as a beneficiary, regardless of your current relationship status. It really doesn’t take much effort to look over your accounts and legal arrangements to ensure that your beneficiary designations are current — and if they aren’t, it’s pretty easy to change them. In fact, for some financial accounts, you may be able to update the beneficiary designations online. In any case, plan on reviewing your beneficiary designations regularly, but especially when you experience a change in

your life. Here’s one more thing to keep in mind: Make sure your current beneficiaries are informed that they will eventually be receiving your 401(k), IRA, life insurance proceeds or other assets that require a beneficiary designation. This advance knowledge may help your loved ones as they plan and maintain their own financial and investment strategies. Although it’s clearly important for you to update your beneficiary designations and to communicate your actions, you will still need to attend to other areas of your estate planning, such as providing care for minor children or dependents,

deciding who you want to receive specific items that do not carry a beneficiary designation, naming someone to manage your affairs should you become incapacitated, and specifying the control you wish your beneficiaries to have over their inheritance. These are just a few examples of estate-planning considerations. Because everyone’s situation is different, you will need to consult with your legal advisor to determine the level of estate planning you require. As we’ve seen, updating your beneficiary is one piece of the puzzle — but to leave the legacy you desire, you’ve got to complete the picture.

If you would like a free review of your portfolio or any of your other investments to see if they are appropriate for your long-term goals, please call or stop by today.
