Message from the Chair Together…Let’s Educate June Wood

During the recent Chamber sponsored Student Teacher Achievement Recognitions (STAR) recognition event, we were introduced to outstanding students and teachers from our county’s public and private schools. Congratulations to our Henry County STAR Student Chidera Osuji and STAR Teacher John Emerson. The recognition program was an awesome reflection of the great talent of students and teachers that we have in Henry County. It was interesting to hear from our high school students and their impressions of whether they would return to our community after college to live, work and play. We, as a Henry County Chamber of Commerce (HCCC), and community leaders are striving to be a great community where our children and future generations will have a desire to live, work, play and pray! Our HCCC is comprised of over 700 chamber members and an outstanding chamber staff who serve as the voice of the business community and who continuously seek opportunities to improve our community. The Chamber is led by a Board of Directors, including 18 members elected at large from the membership. Our Chamber continues to make Economics and Education (E2) a major focus for our quality of life and economic prosperity. The partnerships with K-12 education systems, colleges & universities, local businesses, community leaders and Henry County Citizens have proven the true value of their commitment and dedication to the success of students, education partners and businesses. Since 2010, the E2 Task Force has taken action to support our School Systems in improving the academic performance and in strengthening the preparation of our students for careers that are in demand now and in the future. How Do You Find the Right Employee? By Alisa Kirk, Area Director, the important first step is to create a task/job that the new employee will Clayton State University SBDC profile of who you’re trying to find. have to do, along with the skills the

What is the number one obstacle to growth that your small business will face? You might think it’s having the capital to fund the growth, but actually the number one issue is hiring the right employee for the right position. Often it’s not that you can’t find people to hire; the issue is that it’s hard to find the right person for the position you’re trying to fill. The people we fall in love with in the interview sometimes don’t have the right personality and aptitude to fit in with our company culture or perform the duties we’re hiring them to handle. The interview process is crucial to our hiring process, but finding a good match starts much earlier than the interview. Even though you may be in a time crunch to bring someone on board,

The easiest way to start, if you’ve had someone in the position before, is to create the profile using the person who was ideal for the position. If it’s a new position, think about the type of personality the person should have. Also consider what types of things the person should be good at and enjoy doing. Don’t neglect thinking about the values and culture of the company and its other employees when designing the profile of your new employee. What you should end up with is a list of attributes that would be desirable in the perfect hire. Prioritize those so you’ll know what’s really important. Before advertising the job, make sure your job description paints an accurate picture of what the employee will do and the skillsets he/she should have. A good way to start is to list every

person would need to have. Use this list to categorize the tasks when creating the job description. Finally, when you’re ready for the interview, prepare questions that will accurately help you determine if the interviewee fits the profile you’ve created. Don’t settle for answers that sound prepared; dig deep and find out WHAT the person really thinks, and HOW he/she thinks. Make sure candidates understand that you will check all their references and previous employers. Taking these steps will help you to match the right candidate with your job. Last word: always trust your gut. If something seems off, it probably is. If you need help with hiring your next employee or any other small business matters, please contact us at the Clayton State University SBDC.

Chamber Briefs. Congratulations to... Miranda Allen, with Live Event Solutions on winning the shining star award for Meeting Professionals International- Georgia Chapter. Bob White, former Director of the Henry County Development Authority for the past 19 years and being honored for the tremendous impact his efforts have had on our community - and will continue to have for years to come. Many of our HCFQG board and members were on hand on January 29, 2015 for an appreciation reception where HCFQG board member Bill Herndon presented him with a plaque listing the many, many industries that Bob helped bring to Henry County. Bob, you will be missed!

Community Day Always a popular and impactful day for the Leadership Henry classes during their visits around the county, Community Day was another hit with the Class of 2015. Not many people know just how many non-profit organizations exist in Henry County. When classes find out the impact these groups have and the people that are served through them, Leadership Henry class members often walk away with their eyes wide-open and their attention focused on helping people throughout the community. This year’s class started the day at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce listening to presentations from various non-profits and charitable organizations in Henry County. Each organization was able to relay their involvement and commitment to the county, and class members were able to ask questions and hear more about the groups that are important pieces to the Henry County pie. After leaving the Chamber of Commerce, the group made their way to A Friend’s House to hear about this unique home for children in the custody of the state through the

Department of Family and Children Services. The Leadership Henry Class was able to hear from Nan Jenkins, Director of Development for the organization, and take a tour of the facilities. Lunch was then provided by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The next stop for the class was the Henry County Military Museum and Veterans Wall of Honor at Heritage Park. Local veterans are responsible for preserving the heritage of their military brothers and sisters, and the museum is a true treasure in Henry County and the state of Georgia. The day concluded for the class at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) to hear about the Henry Arts Alliance. Lynna Schmidt provided the class with some excitement as members were divided into groups to act out mini skits using random objects. A tour of the PAC was given by facility director Keith Ellison and PAC staff members. The February Class Day will allow the Class of 2015 to head to Atlanta and the Gold Dome to watch our state government and local elected delegation in action during the 2015 General Assembly. The class will also get the opportunity to tour the Georgia Bureau of Investigation facilities.

Tiera Battle of Woodland High School and Demetrius Pope of Stockbridge High School who were winners of scholarships at Gordon State College’s Super Scholarship event. Robert Griffin of Stockbridge, GA has been awarded Diplomate status in the American Psychotherapy Association (APA). Griffin is the former Chaplain at Henry Medical Center and the 2005 Henry County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year recipient. Since its creation in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the STAR program has honored nearly 25,000 high school seniors who have in turn

chosen their STAR Teachers to share in this recognition. This year’s event took place at Eagle’s Landing Country Club where the 2015 student and teacher honorees, along with their families and school administrators, were treated to breakfast and a program honoring their hard work in school. Thirteen students from public and private schools across Henry County, along with their chosen teachers, were recognized by the Henry County Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee at the annual STAR breakfast on February 10, 2015.

Belles, Bulls & Buck$ When is a business function not a business function? When it’s too much fun to be work! Don’t let the fact that this is a Chamber of Commerce function fool you. The Chamber knows how to show people a good time. The 3rd Annual Belles, Bulls & Buck$ fundraiser will be held on May 8 at Southern Belle Farm and what a location for carnival games, homemade ice cream, a little cow chip bingo! The event will feature the expected spread of delicious food and drinks and of course the reverse raffle for $5,000! While this cash prize is the largest giveaway, it certainly won’t be the only one. When you try your hand at the carnival games a lucky shot or skillfully tossed

ring could earn you entry into a drawing for that games’ prize. All game prizes will be valued at $200 or more and other giveaways will be held throughout the evening. When Belle the cow ultimately drops her “chips” in her gridded enclosure, the square with the deposit will allow the owner of the corresponding ticket to make a nice deposit of their own with 50% of the bingo ticket sales up to $1,000. In the midst of this county fair atmosphere, an event of great sophistication will take place. Our running belles will return to finishing school to learn the finer arts of being a southern belle before that last mad dash to the finish line. These “belles” aren’t just running for our entertainment. They will be representing and raising money for a specific non-profit. Civic and non-profit groups who would like to enter a “belle” should visit http://bit.ly/RunningBelles. Tickets for the event and raffle, for cow chip bingo and information about sponsorship opportunities is available at http://bit.ly/ BellesBullsBucks. Youth Leadership Henry learns about Health in Henry The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2015 learned a lot about healthcare in our community when they met at Piedmont Henry Hospital early on the morning of Saturday January 17. After learning about the history and role of Piedmont Henry Hospital in our community; the group listened to presentations about the Stroke Champion program, and an in-depth look at Physical Therapy. The group was visited by Laura Turner from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta facility on Hudson Bridge Rd. who shared what they do, and some fascinating facts about sugary drinks (including juice boxes) and hand washing.

They also learned about the myriad opportunities in the healthcare field, many of which may not even involve patient care. The common thread was that they all involve a passion for helping others. Mollie Cole came over from the Hands of Hope clinic and shared the services they provide for free to Henry County residents who are unable to afford healthcare. Piedmont Henry does their bloodwork and other services for them at no cost, saving them around $1.5M! Talk about being a good corporate citizen! The class was then divided into three groups and toured the hospital, hearing from those that do the work in various departments and the department heads about what they do every day. This was an amazing day for the Youth Leadership Henry class.

Piedmont Henry was a wonderful host, and had a wonderful day arranged for the class. The Youth Leadership Henry Class was very appreciative towards the presenters for taking their time and energy to share with the class. A common denominator of the day was seeing people who LOVE their job, and love their community. They also see the importance of investing in the future for the good of that community, and make that investment via programs such as the one that was offered to Youth Leadership Henry that day. We are truly blessed to have Piedmont Henry, Children’s Healthcare, and Hands of Hope in Henry County. FINANCIAL FOCUS Look through this “LENS” when making Social Security decisions Your Social Security benefits can be an important part of your retirement income strategy. But when should you start taking these payments? You can begin accepting Social Security as early as 62, but your monthly checks will be much smaller than if you wait until your “full retirement age,” which will likely be between 66 or 67. And these monthly payments will get even bigger if you wait until age 70, at which point they “max out.” So, should you take your Social Security as early as possible and hope that the smaller monthly payments will be justified by the extra years of receiving them, or should you wait until you are older and hope that the bigger checks will be worth the delay? 239199-1

In weighing this decision, consider the acronym LENS, which stands for Life expectancy, Employment, Need and Spouse. Let’s look at each component: Life expectancy — If your family has a history of longevity, and if you are in excellent health, it may make sense for you to take Social Security later, when your monthly benefits will be higher. You’ll also want to consider your spouse’s life expectancy. Employment — If you want to keep working in your “retirement years,” be aware that your earnings could affect your Social Security payments. Specifically, if you take Social Security early — that is, before your full retirement age — your benefits will be withheld by $1 for every $2 in earned income

above a certain amount ($15,720 in 2015). During the year in which you reach your full retirement age, this withholding changes to $1 for every $3 in earnings over the annual limit ($41,880 in 2015). The withheld amounts could also affect spousal benefits. However, beginning the month you attain your full retirement age, benefits will no long longer be withheld based on how much you earn. Also, Social Security will recalculate your benefits at full retirement age to account for the benefits that were withheld. In any case, if you do plan to continue working, and you think you could have significant income, you’ll need to understand the effect that earnings will have on your annual benefits.

Portfolio and Retirement Plan Reviews Education Savings Strategies Equities & Insurance

Need — In deciding when to take Social Security, here’s a key question: Do you need the money? If you can support your lifestyle for several years with alternative sources of income (such as a pension) and modest withdrawals from your investments, you may be able to delay Social Security, thereby increasing the size of your monthly payments. Be careful, though, because relying too heavily on your investment portfolio can shorten its own “life expectancy.” It’s essential that you maintain a reasonable withdrawal rate for your investments throughout your retirement. Spouse — Your decision of when to take Social Security will affect your spouse’s survivor

benefit. Surviving spouses can receive their own benefit or 100% of their deceased spouse’s benefit, whichever is greater. So, if you were to take your Social Security early, when the payments are smaller, your spouse’s survivor benefits will also be permanently reduced. If you are older than your spouse, or otherwise expect your spouse to outlive you, it might be a good idea to delay taking Social Security to maximize the survivor benefits. As you think about when to take Social Security, look at your decision through the LENS described above. It could help clarify your options.
