This month’s newsletter is dedicated to personally thanking our members for their continued support of the community and the Chamber’s commitment to enhancing the county’s quality of life. We want to take this opportunity to thank some of those who have risen up this year in direct involvement in Chamber events and activities and help make everything the Chamber does a success. This is by no means a complete list of those who have helped in so many ways.

Chairman’s Message A Staff of five and a Workforce of Hundreds
Charlie Scott
I have heard it said that Ginger Rogers danced every step that Fred Astaire danced, but backwards and in high heels. This is often the case with unsung heroes, they work in quiet anonymity but their accomplishments are significant when evaluated. I believe that this accurately reflects the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, its staff and volunteers. This month I commend those who make the Chamber such an effective organization for Henry County. The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is primarily a member service organization. However, it conducts monthly networking events for both members and nonmembers, advocates for the larger community on business issues, informs the community at large on critical issues and serves as a clearing house for tourists and visitor information, among its many activities. The Chamber touches thousands of lives every year and promotes economic activity that, according to State of Georgia reports, adds millions of dollars to the local economy every year. The annual Hands on Henry project, a function of the Chamber’s Leadership Henry program, annually allows hundreds of people to participate in “hands on” service projects in the county. The really amazing fact about this activity is that it is done with a paid staff of only five people. Volunteers, coordinated by that staff, allow the Chamber to broaden its reach and be as effective as it has become. Beginning with the Board of Directors, the Chamber benefits from the business acumen and experience of a wide cross section of local community and business leaders. Along with elected and appointed officials, this group voluntarily gives of their time and energy to develop the policies of the Chamber and direct the activities of the staff. Some of the Board members have served multiyear terms either as an elected Board member or in an appointed capacity. Their input and guidance is invaluable
for the ongoing success of the Chamber. Many of the Chamber’s functions are guided by numerous Committees composed of volunteers whose work is a valuable asset to the Chamber. Chamber Ambassadors attend ribbon cuttings for members who have recently joined or who have a significant change in their facilities. They also visit members on a monthly basis just to say thank you for their membership. The Membership Committee actively solicits new members to the Chamber and conducts new member orientation training to ensure that those new members know how to maximize the value of their membership. The Education Committee welcomes new teachers to Henry County with a gift bag and luncheon as well as honoring academic excellence with a STAR student recognition breakfast. This year, the Education Committee provided 425 gift bags containing thousands of dollars of school supplies to the new teachers to help them feel welcome. Along with hundreds of dollars of door prizes, these gifts gave these very important educators a very positive start to their tenure with Henry County Schools. The Small Business Council plans and conducts monthly luncheons primarily to inform and educate small business owners of issues critical to their business. The networking opportunities that these events provide have resulted in
thousands of dollars of business conducted between Chamber members and have given hundreds of attendees valuable information to improve their businesses. The Government Affairs Committee plans and hosts an annual Henry County Day at the State Capitol where Henry County and many of its products are showcased to the State Legislature and other elected and appointed officials. It also conducts an elected leaders appreciation dinner and, as appropriate, provides forums for candidates for public office to become better known to voters. Volunteers have baked and delivered hundreds of pound cakes for the Capitol and offices to keep Henry County a sweet memory. These are just some of the accomplishments of only selected Committees. Other Committees provide equally valuable services to our community, and are as ably led. The Chamber is heavily invested in programs to identify and train leaders for our community. Leadership Henry and Youth Leadership Henry are sponsored by the Chamber though they operate with independent Boards of Directors. The two programs select participants who undergo a vigorous program designed to teach them how the community operates and gives them the opportunity to meet and see the “behind the scenes” workings of Henry
Charlie Scott is President and CEO of Piedmont Henry
County in action. Hundreds of present and future County leaders are graduates of these programs and they continue to make a positive impact on our community. Contrary to a popular perception, the Chamber of Commerce is not taxpayer funded, but is a private nonprofit organization that relies on member dues, sponsorships and fundraisers for its financial support. Volunteers assist in the planning and production of two major fundraisers for the Chamber, a fall Golf Classic Tournament and a Spring Bells, Bulls and Buck$ event. Both of these events provide a fun opportunity for the community to participate in great activities while the Chamber benefits financially from their efforts. These two opportunities allow the Chamber to fund and support many of the other Chamber activities mentioned above. I noted a staff of five, and I want to commend Phyllis Reeves, Laura Luker, Gary Sparrow, Lydia Pierre and David Gill for their work. They are committed to the success of the Chamber and provide the organizational framework for these successful endeavors. Together with the hundreds of active volunteers, they make quite a team. If you are a Chamber member and are not participating in these activities, I encourage you to find a place to offer your services. I am confident that you will find it to be rewarding and often productive for your business. If you would like to join the Chamber and become part of these activities, we welcome you. I speak from some experience, as I have volunteered in a Board capacity for the Chamber for over seven years. Ginger Rogers danced her way to fame and fortune. Our volunteers do not gain fame, but often find their fortunes improved, and they always enjoy the satisfaction of seeing their energy expended in remarkably effective activities that make Henry County a much better place to work, play, live, worship and enjoy.

Business Profile Heritage Bank
About the Company Heritage Bank, a state chartered commercial bank, has been serving metro Atlanta’s Southern Crescent since 1955. Heritage will be celebrating its 60th anniversary next year. The bank has six full service offices, features a well-rounded offering of commercial and consumer products, and is an active, involved member of the community it serves. The company’s stock is traded under the symbol “CCFH.OB”. “When you bring your deposit dollars to Heritage Bank, we use those deposit dollars in the form of loans to local business owners- those owners in our three county market area. We do not take local deposit dollars from Henry, Clayton, and Fayette counties and invest them in Los Angeles, California or Las Vegas Nevada. Super-regional banks may take those deposit dollars you leave at the bank and invest them wherever the greatest need is in the markets they serve and it may truly be across the country.” Community Support Heritage Bank, believes in giving back to the community in which we all live, work and play and in re-investing in the communities where the company does business. As a community bank, we believe one of our missions is to invest

in the future of the communities we serve. Lending money is one of the main ways we invest in our communities in addition to supporting many local organizations with donations of our resources and time. Chamber Involvement Leonard Moreland is the President/CEO of Heritage Bank and has been a loyal member of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce since 1997. “It is our responsibility as citizens in our community to help the community grow and prosper”, said Moreland. Are You An Imposter? By Alisa Kirk, Area Director, Clayton State University Small Business Development Center I thought I was the only one. Other leaders, managers, and business owners seem so confident. In a crisis, leaders take charge and calm the fears of those they lead. They always seem to know what to do and how to inspire others to follow them. Who was I kidding, trying to act calm and confidently manage problems? One day I was in a facilitated meeting with my colleagues and a group of local business owners, when the speaker went around the room and asked each of us this question: “What is your business fear in business?” When my turn came, I took
a deep breath, and, looking at those I tried to appear confident and competent to, said, “My greatest fear is that one day everyone will wake up and realize I’m a fraud. Sometimes when I’m trying to convince others to follow me, I’m struck by the fear that I don’t really know what I’m doing and shouldn’t be even trying. Then I swallow that fear and just keep going.” The speaker smiled and said, “Ah, the impostor syndrome. Did you know that it’s a common problem among many leaders? So many top executives report feeling that way, they’ve given it the name.” Wait a minute! I wasn’t alone. That
changed everything! In the years since that day, I’ve seen the same fear in many business owners when we talk about the problems they experience in running a business, selling to customers, and managing employees. Together we’ve discovered that a little of the fear is healthy because it keeps us humble, but a lot of the same fear can be debilitating, keeping us from making the important decisions that could move us and our businesses forward. My advice to you: recognize this fear and don’t let it keep you from being the best leader you can be.

Leadership Henry Retreats to Camp Twin Lakes The Leadership Henry Class of 2015 got their chance to strengthen their bond with one another over two days at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Georgia. The mini retreat was geared towards helping the class come together as a collective by learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses and by learning what expertise each class member brings to the group. Over the next several months, class members will spend ample time together learning and sharing their perspectives about various subjects in the county. They will also use the knowledge gained at their retreat to fulfill roles necessary for the Hands on
Henry volunteer day in April. During the retreat, class members partook in a Myers-Briggs personality test, heard from motivational speaker Spark Plug, gained unique insight into the idea of being a servant leader, and tested their thinking and collaboration skills during team-building activities. All guests at Camp Twin Lakes were also given a tour of the vast campgrounds which exist primarily for the purpose of helping children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other challenges. The next event for the class is Local Government Day on Wednesday, October 22. For more information on Leadership Henry, please visit www.leadershiphenry. com. August Business After Hours The Business After Hours at Heritage Bank was a great event. There was great food and drinks, fantastic Door Prizes and not to mention Cash Prizes. For the past ten-eleven months the monthly Jackpot served as an unofficial staple of the monthly Chamber’s After Hours networking events and was believed to be what aided in drawing large numbers of members and guests alike and this
month was no exception. Attendees crowded the Business After Hours hosted by Heritage Bank where they dined on the savory meatballs, delicious shrimp & grits, side dishes, and yummy desserts all provided by The Grand Gourmet Catering Services. There are so many members that consistently make our Business After Hours and eagerly await the Jackpot drawing each month. This month there was finally a winner.
The Chamber announced its Jackpot Prize winner now in its 11th month. Kim Devine, Vice President of Heritage Bank in Henry County, and Chamber Ambassador, was selected at random and received the Jackpot Prize of $600. Congratulations to Kim Devine on her win! Visit the Henry County Chamber of Commerce facebook page to see more photos and video footage of the event.

“I have been a member of the Henry County Chamber for a number of years and the Chamber has always been there for our company. I recently had the distinct pleasure to finally attend a Chamber luncheon and meet some delightful people! In fact one of those connections resulted in a visit to our store and not only a sale but also a beautiful friendship! Thank You!” Denise Swanson of Fancy That Fine Jewelry 1752 Hudson Bridge Road • Suite 102 • Stockbridge, GA (770)507-7458 • www.afancythatjewelry.com “We are a small retail store in Stockbridge, selling Craft Beer and Wine and the supplies to make beer and wine. A few months ago, we decided to re-join the Henry County Chamber of commerce. In going through the member discounts we discovered that our Insurance Agent was also a member and offered a discount on insurance. The
discount we received from our insurance, paid for our membership dues to the Chamber. Most members give each other discounts on their products or services. These discounts are just one of the many ways you can benefit from being a member of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce.” Kat Vallish of Barley & Vine Your complete source for Craft Beer, Brewing & Wine Making Supplies. 1445 Rock Quarry Road, #202 • Stockbridge, GA 770-507-5998

October Business Boosters Luncheon
Henry County’s Managed Lanes Thursday October 16, 2014 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
With construction set to begin on Henry County’s managed lanes project, it’s important that we understand the resulting benefits that can occur to improve the state of traffic in our community. Indications are that a lot of people still have questions, are misinformed, or need assurance. If you have questions such as: • Why is Henry County known as “the place where traffic stops?” • Who will benefit from using the managed lanes? • What will it cost to use the lanes? • What, if any, negative impact is there to businesses or residents in Henry County? • How long will this solution provide relief? Here’s your opportunity to ask these or any question you may have of the experts. Members of State Roads & Tolls Authority, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and construction engineers with C.W. Matthews will be present to provide
answers. Attend the October 16, 2014 Business Boosters Luncheon to get factual information from those who have the facts. Then together we can help share correct information with business acquaintances, residents, friends and family. The cost for this catered lunch is $12 for Chamber members who register and pay online or $15 at the door and $20 for non-members who register and pay online or $23 at the door. Reservations are required by October 14 for planning purposes and can be made and paid online at www.henrycounty.com. Go to the Events calendar, then the BBL for October 16, 2014. To cover catering costs, no-shows will be billed. Lunch will be catered by The Italian Oven. Luncheon is sponsored by Safeguard Security, LLC.
August Business Boosters Luncheon Commissioner Mark Butler Talks Georgia’s BEST
The Henry County Chamber of Commerce held its monthly Business Boosters Luncheon on Thursday, August 21, 2014. The event was sponsored by the Joy FM and was marked as the first Sponsored Business Boosters Luncheon. With almost 100 in attendance, the audience heard about various updates and initiatives in the Georgia Department of Labor from Commissioner Mark Butler. Butler noted some of the recent successes including the partnership with the Georgia Department of Labor, Hall County Board of Education, Junior Achievement, and are endorsed by the Georgia Department of
Education. This partnership has created programs such as the Business Ethics: Experience and Business Ethics: Educate (BEE) – which are programs designed to help students make ethical decisions in the workplace. The Commissioner also spoke about the Georgia Department of Labor’s Georgia Business Ethics Student Training (BEST) certification. He mentioned that completion of the BEE programs can earn high school students nearly half of the credits required for the Georgia BEST certification. Also in attendance was the legendary Michael Douglas of the Harlem Globe Trotters, who
did some tricks and assisted President and CEO of the Chamber, David Gill, in taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge immediately following the luncheon! The event would not be made complete without door prize drawings of which the sponsoring organization, the Joy FM, gave a lucky winner a Weekend Getaway to Cohutta Springs, which is a 725-acre cozy and elegant retreat, nestled deep in the foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. It was educational, fun and an all-around great time!

FINANCIAL FOCUS Protect your retirement against market volatility As an investor, you’re well aware that the financial markets move up and down over the short term. During your working years, you might feel that you have time to overcome this volatility. But what happens when you retire? Won’t you be more susceptible to market movements? You might not be as vulnerable as you think. In the first place, given our growing awareness of healthier lifestyles, you easily could spend two, or even three, decades in retirement; so your investment time frame isn’t necessarily
going to be that compressed. But it’s still true that time might be a more important consideration to you during your retirement years. So you might want to be particularly vigilant about taking steps to help smooth out the effects of market volatility. Here are a few suggestions: Allocate your investments among a variety of asset classes – Proper asset allocation is a good investment move at any age. But when you’re retired, you want to be especially careful that you don’t overconcentrate your investment dollars among just a few assets.
Spreading your money among a range of vehicles – stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, government securities and so on – can help you avoid taking the full brunt of a downturn that might primarily hit just one type of investment. (Keep in mind, that diversification can’t assure a profit or protect against loss.) Choose investments that have demonstrated solid performance across many market cycles – You can help improve your outlook by owning quality investments. When investing in stocks,

choose those that have actual earnings and a track record of earnings growth. If you invest in fixed-income vehicles, pick those that are considered investment-grade. Don’t make emotional decisions – At various times during your retirement, you likely will witness some sharp drops in the market. Try to avoid overreacting to these downturns, which probably will be normal market corrections. Don’t try to “time” the market – You might be tempted to take advantage of volatility by looking for opportunities
to “buy low and sell high.” Unfortunately, no one really can predict market highs or lows. You’ll probably be better off by consistently investing the same amount of money into the same investments. However, systematic investing won’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. It’s probably natural to get somewhat more apprehensive about market volatility during your retirement years. But taking the above steps can help you navigate the sometimes-choppy waters of the financial world.
