“Kumbaya” Aside, the Meeting Met the Need For Holding It Eddie Ausband

The word “meeting” may have become one of the most disliked in the English language -- primarily because we all have spent WAY too much time in WAY too many sit-downs that accomplished little but sucking away potentially productive minutes and hours from our day. Ask any businessperson, politician, public servant or corporate executive what helps waste their time, and a reason guaranteed to be in every top five list is too many meetings. A personal, general observation I have had over the years regarding meetings is that the number of attendees to any business confab is inversely proportional to the number and scope of successes resulting from it. So, with that personal bias in general about holding and attending so many meetings, you may find my comments this month a bit odd. In late August, I along with about 75 government leaders and managers, community board members, educators, public service personnel, chamber members and local policy shapers attended the sixth annual Henry County Intergovernmental Retreat in Carrollton. The purpose of these yearly symposia is to make sure that the overall economic, educational, development and infrastructure goals of largely separate but adjacent political jurisdictions are aligned in an effort to bring a united front to Henry County’s success. Now, it would be easy for the leaders of one town to try to advance their priorities ahead of those of another town, even

though they live in the same county. Look around the metro Atlanta area and you see it happen often. Pleasantly surprising though, that’s not what I’ve seen from the Henry County retreats. I’ve seen successes such as the E2 initiative that developed out of the 2010 Intergovernmental Retreat in Athens and has evolved into an overwhelming list of accomplishments that have bettered our approach to education. This year, participants discussed, planned and drew up specific actions for our county-wide economic development efforts that before long I know will grow into big successes for Henry County. What struck me most at the meeting was the willingness and genuine desire by the participants to help the county as a whole succeed -- leaving aside any provincial

thinking. I came away believing that we have a group of leaders in Henry County that really “get it.” They understand that when Stockbridge succeeds, McDonough benefits; and when Hampton wins, Locust Grove wins too. The leaders may not have held hands and sung “Kumbaya” to close the meeting, but what they did was listen intently, present solid facts and creative ideas and have an honest and frank dialog on setting an exciting and mutually beneficial economic development course for Henry County in the future. I like that process and I like that outcome. What more could you ask for? As a businessman, one thing I’ve always said -- “I love me a good meeting!” :)

Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers Dottie Wise, Associate Broker About the University Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers was started in 1979 by John Hartramp with one office and a handful of sales associates. More than 30 years later, BHGRE Metro Brokers is one of the nation’s largest full service real estate companies and the world’s largest Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate franchise. Under the leadership of Kevin Levent, who became President and CEO in 1996, BHGRE Metro Brokers has experienced exponential sales growth, facilitated by the addition of nearly 2,000 sales associates and 25 offices spread among metro Atlanta and north Georgia. In 2009 Metro Brokers affiliated with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. While Metro Brokers remains an independently owned and operated firm, the new affiliation has translated into increased brand name recognition in Atlanta and throughout the country. The company offers a wide range of real estate services including residential and commercial sales, business brokerage, corporate relocation, foreclosures and short sales, rental, new home sales and marketing. Dottie is celebrating her twenty sixth year in real estate sales and has closed over 1775 transactions during her career. Wise has spent most of her career guiding buyers and sellers through the residential sale process. Dottie and her husband, Tom, transferred to McDonough from Newnan, GA in 1984. They have three children and 7 grandchildren and are active members and Elders in the McDonough Presbyterian Church. During her career she has been recognized as a leader in the real estate industry. She has served as President of the Metro South Association of Realtors and President of the Women’s Council of Realtors. She was also recognized as Realtor of the Year for the Metro South Association. Dottie has received numerous industry awards. Most recently she earned the Top Producer for 2012 for the McDonough office of BHGRE Metro Brokers. Besides being a top producer she has been an instructor for New Homes University at the Metro Brokers Academy and continues to present seminars and training opportunities for

sales persons. Dottie Wise, Realtor, is a member of the National Association of Realtors, the Georgia Realtors, and the Metro South Association of Realtors. Community Support “This community has given me many opportunities to grow my business over the past twenty six years. It has been and will continue to be a privilege for me to give back to Henry County,” says Dottie. Wise was instrumental in starting the state “Adopt A Highway” program through her involvement with the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. “As I drove clients across Henry County, I realized litter was a quality of life issue and it was time to clean it up.” The program is still in existence and the “Adopt a Road” program has also been implemented. She has been involved in the Henry Council for Quality Growth and has served on Henry Medical Center Foundation Board. Through BHGRE Metro Brokers she has also worked with Habitat for Humanity in building homes for new homeowners. “I am very proud to be a part of BHGRE Metro Broker’s recently implemented program for Veterans in all branches of the military including the National Guard and the Reserves, called ‘Veterans to REP’. This new program started in response to our veterans coming home to high unemployment rates in the US.” On April 16, 2013 Governor Nathan Deal recognized HGRE Metro Brokers for its commitment to the community and our Veterans. The commendation stated that BHGRE Metro Brokers is “helping not only to strengthen Georgia’s economy, but is also giving back to the outstanding men and women who serve our nation.” These veterans are being offered full scholarships to cover the costs of real estate school, and their first 6 months of expenses with the company are covered. “The Veterans to REP has given me the opportunity to contact past clients and share a new career opportunity with them as well as become a cheerleader for those who decide to take this path” says Dottie. Chamber Involvement Dottie Wise has been an active member of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce since

moving to McDonough. In the early 1990’s at the Chamber she was assigned to a new committee, “Making Henry Home”. The mission of this group was to find ways to bring new residents to live, work and play in our county. “I think we did a good job!” Dottie says. She was also a member of the first Leadership Henry graduating class. Throughout the past twenty six years her involvement with the Chamber of Commerce has spanned numerous committees and projects. In 2006 she served as Chairperson for the Chamber. During her tenure in 2007, Dottie was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. “I have always believed that knowledge is power. Membership in the Chamber has given me information about our county and state, which has helped me stay current on issues and affairs. This has been beneficial to my real estate career so that I can guide buyers through their search for a new home. Usually buyers will find an area, then select a county, next a school district and subdivision, and buy the house last. The information the Chamber has provided me has helped me guide them through this process. But if there was one outstanding benefit from my Chamber membership, it is the networking. As an independent contractor and small business person, membership in the Chamber has been an invaluable and a strong support for my career. My business has grown mainly through referrals and many of those referrals have come through my Chamber networks. ”

Big Things are Happening in Stockbridge! The Hsu’s Recognized for YLH Support The Youth Leadership Henry Board of Directors recently recognized Anita and Howard Hsu, owners of Gezzo’s Surf & Grille, for their ongoing support of the Youth Leadership Henry program. The photo shows the Hsus receiving a framed picture of the 2012 class at their graduation, with the mat signed by each of the graduates. Programs Chair, Susan Howington, and Board Chairman, Don Dunlap, presented the picture at the Gezzo’s location on Jonesboro Road in McDonough. Gezzo’s has shown support for the Youth Leadership Henry program for several years. Their

donations of meals and snacks for several events enable the cost of the program to remain low ($100 for the year-long program), ensuring that it remains accessible to all Henry County sophomores and truly representative of the community. Howard and Anita go way beyond just supporting Youth Leadership Henry – they are engaged and working with many Chamber and community groups to make Henry County a great place to live, work, and play. This spirit of community involvement is a trait that is stressed in the Youth Leadership Henry program, making the Hsus great role models for YLH class members!

Exciting news just keeps rolling out from the City of Stockbridge! Multiple initiatives since the first of the year have positioned Henry County’s most populous city to attract new types of business development opportunities not previously experienced in the city or on the southside of Atlanta for that matter. Stockbridge jump-started the momentum with the reactivation of its Downtown Development Authority. Following quickly on the heels of this was the announcement of a $15 million public-private partnership with Community Broadband that will result in 38 new jobs and one of the fastest and most powerful internet systems in the entire state. It will deliver information 100 times faster than what is currently available, and will be up and running by September 2014. It will attract technologydependent companies that previously could not locate in Henry County due to lack of this critical infrastructure. Mayor Alarcon in speaking to the breadth of this initiative stated “This is a phenomenal opportunity, but it is not just a city of Stockbridge win; this initiative benefits the people of Henry County, and in particular, our students.” Before the ink had dried on the resolution approving the broadband announcement, the first technology company was knocking on the city’s door. Citing the fiber network and

intrigued by Stockbridge’s progressive and business-friendly environment, World Internet Group decided that before they relocated outside of the state of Georgia they needed to learn more about such a progressive city. The Mayor and Downtown Development Authority worked aggressively with World Internet to keep them in Georgia. As a result, World Internet Group has decided to move their headquarters to the City of Stockbridge. They held an open house at their new offices in Eagles Landing Corporate Center on August 8th. This relocation brings with it the potential to create approximately 70 new technology jobs. If that were not enough, the momentum continues. In the midst of all of this Stockbridge has formed a partnership with Academy Theatre to bring performing and visual arts to the city. Renovations of the 22,000 square foot city-owned Stockbridge Community Arts Center are underway. Once complete it will house a 250-seat proscenium theatre, a 99-seat black box theatre, and multiple classrooms for dance, art, and computer classes. City leaders understand that quality of life infrastructure is a critical element to attracting new businesses. During a recent Downtown Development Authority training session, the instructor remarked that the theater project could have the same

impact on business development as attracting a major retail anchor store. In addition to these projects, a $1.2 million streetscape project is underway along the historic downtown Berry Street. The city has received two Community Development Block Grants and the city planning department is in the process of rewriting the sign ordinance thanks to a grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission. Several other planning initiatives are in the works, such as application to become a designated Main Street program. The city is keeping its citizens informed through a city newsletter called The City of Stockbridge City News Link. Mayor Mark Alarcon does not believe in sitting idle and letting the “chips fall where they may.” He feels it is time for the city to embrace the fact that Stockbridge is the 38th largest city in the state; it is located just 15 miles south of the world’s busiest airport, is accessible from multiple Interstate interchanges, and is in close proximity to the Port of Savannah. Stockbridge is ideally positioned to become a model 21st century city. As the old saying goes,” opportunity knocks once.” Stockbridge has not only opened the door to opportunity, but has completely removed it from the hinges! Stay tuned, the best is yet to come!

Henry County Schools Tout New School Year with Multiple Highlights Monday, August 5, marked the official end of summer for 40,000+ students and the start of another exciting school year in Henry County Schools. Fifty schools welcomed back students to the classroom for the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year. The district’s 5,000+ employees prepped for a couple of weeks prior to the start in order to get things ready, while some of those employees worked all throughout the summer. The start of school brought nearly 3,000 new faces to classrooms with kindergartners heading to school, and almost as many students embarked on their senior year before they enter the workforce or head off to college. There is a lot of excitement around this school year and several components of the school system, and here is a list of notable items:

• Hickory Flat Elementary enters its first year as a conversion charter school. The two-year process to become a state approved conversion charter school was supported by the school’s staff and parents before gaining approval from the local and state boards of education. • The Academy for Advanced Studies opened this fall to high school students looking to expand their education with greater course offerings for college and career pathways. Henry County Schools became the largest school district in Georgia to have a college and career charter academy. The state recognized the Academy before its official opening with a check presentation of $3.4 million dollars to provide for expanding its classroom and lab space next year. CEO John Uesseler indicates there is a full enrollment of students for the first year. • Dutchtown Elementary School became the state’s first public school to have a Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program. Nearly 40 students are a part of the inaugural class of kindergartners learning in English as well as learning in the most widely spoken language in the world – Mandarin Chinese. • Impact Academy, the district’s online virtual learning option, expanded its enrollment to include more grade

The option was well received by students and parents last year and interest increased greatly according to the program’s administrators. • School safety was enhanced with the addition of security doors at all elementary and middle schools and the addition of security cameras at elementary schools and a few other schools that currently lack the equipment. There has been an increase in the number of resource officers provided by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. • More stop-arm cameras were added to school buses throughout the district to capture motorists ignoring the law and passing a bus in the process of picking up or dropping off students. In a small one-day sample, over 90 drivers put student lives at risk by passing buses stopped with their stop arm extended. • Additional schools were added to the technology improvement list enabled through the passage of E-SPLOST IV in 2011. The tiered rollout will provide wireless technology capability throughout more schools in the district. The

Dutchtown cluster was the first recipient of this infrastructure enhancement last school year. • Three schools welcomed new principals for the school year. Gabriel Wiley took over at Austin Road Middle School for Ms. Cheryl Carter; Walter Shields took over at Oakland Elementary for Dr. Sheila Korvayan; and Dr. Cemond Robinzine took over at Red Oak Elementary for Ms. Tracy Ware. • Two new subject coordinators started in the district this school year. Zackory Kirk is the new English/Language Arts Coordinator, and Kaneice Bembry is the new Science, Health, and Physical Education Coordinator. • Approximately 260 teachers started their first year in Henry County Schools.

Nearly half of that number are beginning the first year of their teaching career, while the remainder bring years of experience with them from other districts. The start of every school year means the chance to help further a child’s learning and prepare them for a life of success, and Superintendent Dr. Ethan Hildreth knows the district stands ready to make that happen for the student population. “Our schools saw great gains in academic achievement last year,” said Dr. Hildreth, “and we look forward to continuing this growth for all of our 40,000 students during the upcoming school year.” For more information on Henry County Schools, visit www.henry.k12.ga.us.

A record number of door prizes were awarded to lucky attendees, and the Chamber’s $350 jackpot was won by Dottie Wise who was present when her name was selected, making it a funfilled and exciting evening at the Market. September Business Boosters Luncheon Preparing for SPLOST IV Learn Before You Vote! September 19, 2013 • 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM On November 5 residents of Henry County will cast an important vote on a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax that, if approved, would go into effect in March 2014 and continue for six years. Attendees at the September 19 Business Boosters Luncheon will hear from experts and learn the answers to many commonly asked questions. This will be an informative lunch and learn, designed to promote healthy discussion that educates Chamber members so they can provide accurate information to friends and neighbors and encourage them to vote. The cost for this catered lunch is $12 for Chamber members who register and pay online or $15 at the door and $20 for non-members who register and pay online or $23 at the door. It’s Time For A Progress Check Judiffier Pearson, Business Consultant Clayton State University Small Business Development Center The first half of 2013 has passed and it’s time for your business to consider a mid-year progress report. Have you taken advantage of the opportunities that you identified at the beginning of the year? You know, the ones that you listed in your SWOT analysis to help you achieve your objectives. If you haven’t taken advantage of those opportunities, it’s not too late. Recommit to the process of achieving your goals. Carve out a full day on your calendar, or even a week, to work on the action items that can help you get back on track. Accelerate as many of those activities as

you can. Before you know it, you will have redeemed much of the lost time from the first half of the year and will have jumpstarted your strategic plan. Don’t have a SWOT? Here’s a quick overview of how to do one: • Step 1: Define your organization’s (S)trengths, (W) eaknesses, (O)pportunities, and (T)hreats. Make a 2 x 2 matrix that subdivides 4 categories. Record 3 items in each section. In quadrant 1, list your and your company’s strengths. These are the competencies and resources that give you an advantage. In quadrant 2, list your and your company’s weaknesses. What areas need improvement? What causes you to lose sales? In quadrant 3, identify interesting trends and opportunities that exist in the marketplace that you could take advantage of.

Then, list the external forces that could threaten your company in quadrant 4. • Step 2: Analyze your SWOT. How can you use your strengths to maximize the opportunities you listed? How can you overcome or neutralize your weaknesses? Can any of your strengths be used to mitigate threats? • Step 3: Lay Out Your Plan. Take the answers from Step 2 to define your objective(s) and develop an action plan. Once you complete this exercise, you should have much of the direction and data you need to seize the opportunities before you. What do new investors really need to know? If you’re starting out as an investor, you might be feeling overwhelmed. After all, it seems like there’s just so much to know. How can you get enough of a handle on basic investment concepts so that you’re comfortable in making wellinformed choices? Actually, you can get a good grip on the investment process by becoming familiar with a few basic concepts, such as these: • Stocks versus Bonds — When you buy stocks, or stock-based investments, you are buying ownership shares in companies. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to buy shares of quality companies and to hold these shares for the long term. This strategy may help you eventually overcome shortterm price declines, which may affect all stocks. Keep in mind, though, that when buying stocks, there are no guarantees you won’t lose some or all

of your investment. By contrast, when you purchase bonds, you aren’t becoming an “owner” — rather, you are lending money to a company or a governmental unit. Barring default, you can expect to receive regular interest payments for as long as you own your bond, and when it matures, you can expect to get your principal back. However, bond prices do rise and fall, typically moving in the opposite direction of interest rates. So if you wanted to sell a bond before it matures, and interest rates have recently risen, you may have to offer your bond at a price lower than its face value. For the most part, stocks are purchased for their growth potential (although many stocks do offer income, in the form of dividends), while bonds are bought for the income stream provided by interest

payments. Ideally, though, it is important to build a diversified portfolio containing stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit (CDs), government securities and other investments designed to meet your goals and risk tolerances. Diversification is a strategy designed to help reduce the effects of market volatility on your portfolio; keep in mind, however, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. • Risk versus Reward — All investments carry some type of risk: Stocks and bonds can decline in value, while investments such as CDs can lose purchasing power over time. One important thing to keep in mind is that, generally, the greater the potential reward, the higher the risk. • Setting goals — As an investor, you need to set goals for your investment portfolio, such as providing resources

Henry Jefferson Copeland’s Quaker family immigrated to America from Ireland, Scotland and England in the early 18th century in search of religious freedom. Copeland’s father arrived in McDonough with his family in 1826. Henry Jefferson Copeland was born 33 years later on March 18, 1849. He was the great uncle of McDonough Mayor Billy Copeland and the great-great uncle of Ausband’s wife, Allison (Copeland) Ausband. The east side of the Historic McDonough Square, where The Ausband Agency is located, was built by Copeland. The Henry Jefferson Copeland home on Griffin Street is today home to the CPA Firm, Hargrave, Freeman & Leto.

The Leadership Henry Board of Directors welcomed the incoming Leadership Henry Class of 2014 during the Kick-Off Dinner held at The French Market on August 13. These leaders will begin participating in a series of monthly programs that develop their knowledge of areas of Henry County such as public safety, healthcare, education, economic development, government, and community service through interaction with local leaders and business people in each area. The class culminates in April 2014 with the planning and execution of Leadership Henry’s annual Hands On Henry project, enabling class members to give back to the community while reinforcing leadership skills in working with volunteers on multiple service projects selected to improve the beauty of Henry

County and to benefit many of the county’s non-profit organizations. Henry County Chamber of Commerce President David Gill addressed the class and spoke on the purpose of Leadership Henry. The evening’s program included an icebreaker and information on the upcoming retreat and concluded with the presentation of the Ed Bridges Community Spirit Award by Joyce Bridges-Paul. Shane Persaud was awarded the Ed Bridges Spirit of the Community Award in recognition of his commitment and volunteerism to Henry County.
