The Henry County Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber Ambassadors honored one of their own by awarding the 2012 Chamber Ambassador of the Year to Ms. Debbie Almond. Debbie is the Senior Marketing Representative with ServiceMaster South Metro. A volunteer with the Chamber for many years, Debbie also serves as secretary of the Membership Committee. As a Chamber Ambassador, Debbie participated in most of the ribbon cutting ceremonies in 2012. She also volunteered at the Chamber Golf Classic, Membership Appreciation Luncheon, New Member Reception, and many other Chamber events throughout the year. “I love people and enjoy meeting others in all types of business,” says Debbie. “Serving as a Chamber ambassador allows me to expand my network and to welcome others as they begin their business venture in Henry County.” Debbie is always there to offer a smile and welcoming hand to new members.

Chairman’s Message Catching Rattlesnakes Can’t Possibly Be This Hard!

One of our wise, legendary Georgia politicians once described the process of making laws as extremely difficult -ranking in complexity only behind combat in war, fighting fires and catching rattlesnakes.

Even if true, each January, 236 brave souls make their way to the State Capitol to meet with constituents, both listen to and fend off legions of lobbyists, propose bills, analyze causes and effects, debate with fervor and, ultimately, pass or reject regulations that are meant to either enhance our lives or protect us from evil. It’s been this way in Georgia since 1777.

Whew -- It’s tiring enough to think about it...much less do it!

Right now, we are in the middle of the 40 days of trialand-error under the Gold Dome. It’s an important time for all of us -- as citizens, business owners and members of a vibrant community. It’s a process that we should if not embrace, participate in, and attempt to influence, for the sake of Henry County and our business community.

Fortunately, our county is well positioned in Atlanta with a good mix of legislators. Henry has one of the largest county delegations

of legislators in this General Assembly with 10 members, comprising nearly 4 1/2% of the total body. Of our eight Members of the House of Representatives and two Senators, six are incumbents and four are newlyelected. Six are Republicans; four are Democrats. One member, Senator Rick Jeffares, serves as a Floor Leader for Governor Nathan Deal in the Senate.

Here’s the catch! While all of our legislators are well-qualified and duly-elected, we can’t send them to Atlanta and expect them to do a good job without our input and support. During the session, I encourage you to follow what’s going on and let your Senator and Representative know how you feel about issues that arise. Write them. Call them.

Email, tweet and text. They need to hear your opinions.

From a Chamber perspective, as I mentioned in this column last month, our top priority is to

lay the groundwork for funding the second building of the Southern Crescent Technical College -- hopefully in 2014.

We have outlined that priority to our lawmakers and believe they will work hard to make it a reality. One way that you as Chamber members can help is to attend Henry County Day at the Capitol on February 13th.

Details are available from the Chamber office and a strong turnout always helps further our cause.

Coupled with our strong new state legislative delegation, here at home we are welcoming three new County Commissioners including Chairman Tommy Smith and three new members to the Development Authority, among others. They, along with the incumbents, also need to hear from you so they’ll have a better idea of the business community’s sentiment.

I’m very optimistic on Henry County’s positioning in Atlanta and here at home with a strong mix of experienced and new leadership. Our leaders need our support, encouragement and ideas.

Let’s make sure they have that benefit.

Business Profile Gezzo’s Surf & Grille

About the Company Howard and Anita Hsu, owners of Gezzo’s Surf & Grille, grew up in the restaurant business, learning the tools of the trade from their parents who opened Henry County’s first Chinese restaurant, Hunan Village, in Stockbridge in 1980. In 2003, with a loan from their parents, Howard and Anita opened Gezzo’s, Henry County’s first West Coast burrito shop. Taking inspiration from their roots in California and Hawaii, the Hsus wanted to create a place where beach culture, art, healthy eating and a concern for the environment was a part of everyday life.

The menu focuses on fresh ingredients and daily prepared meats and vegetables with eclectic flavors. The company employs 4 full-time and 15 part-time staff at two restaurant locations in McDonough and Locust Grove. Both Howard and Anita are graduates of Woodward Academy and the University of Georgia.

True entrepreneurs, the Hsus expanded from a food service business into the areas of catering, event planning, hospitality and restaurant consulting and Food Truck marketing. The food truck industry was growing in popularity, showed promise and presented a common business theme that easily melded with their catering business model. Even in a recession economy,

they launched “Surf’n Taco Mobile” on the streets of Atlanta, proving that the food truck business can be unique and prosperous, and enabling the Hsus to employ their creative talents.

Community Support The Hsus believe in giving back. Their businesses help to provide for a number of Henry County non-profit organizations like The Hands of Hope Clinic, A Friend’s House, Habitat for Humanity, Leadership Henry and the Atlanta Surf Rider Foundation where Howard is Founder.

Chamber Involvement As actively involved members of the Chamber, Gezzo’s Surf & Grille offers catering for Chamber events, provides door prizes and participates as schedules permit. “The Chamber is a source of business resources, innovation, small business guidance and overall entrepreneurial spirit. During 2012 our Chamber helped recruit and host 34 sports tournaments

bringing 40,000 visitors to Henry County; played a major role in securing Piedmont Henry; led efforts to make our county a certified Georgia Work Ready Community; advocated for the T-SPLOST to address traffic congestion; developed and launched a new website promoting member businesses; and brought the E2 initiative full circle by breaking ground on a new technical college for Henry County, winning Charter School status for the Academy for Advanced Studies and securing $3.5 million in state grants to build out heavy industrial labs for the school! All while entertaining over 13,000 visitors in the Chamber lobby, hosting over 5,000 participants at business trainings,

meetings and events, and answering over 6,000 telephone calls to the Chamber!

If you remember the old-fashioned western movies, Danny Brown is a “white hat” kind of guy. He’s honest, he’s straightforward, he’s considerate and he’s just somebody everybody likes to be around. Danny, exhibiting the same “have no fear” entrepreneurial spirit that built his successful business, led our Chamber through tough economic times yet our accomplishments are plentiful and our membership is over 700 strong. Exploring Competitive Advantage

What makes your business different? Why should customers buy from you and not from your competitors? If you can’t answer these questions, you really can’t compete.

There are three mistakes that small businesses make when it comes to competitive advantages.

The first is not knowing what makes them different from anyone else. The second is thinking they have a competitive advantage when they really don’t. The third, and very common, is that they have a good advantage but don’t adequately leverage it.

When I ask small business owners why customers should buy from them, the answers I get are often

vague. Many say that their products/services are better, or higher quality, or more dependable, etc. To that I reply, “Don’t your competitors say that, too?”

Don’t make your competitive advantage something that is subjective (your view of “quality” might be different from your customer’s), expected (customers expect the service to be good, or they wouldn’t buy from you), or clichéd (“we go the extra mile”).

Instead, make your differences specific (what do you do that the other guys don’t?), desirable to the customers (it doesn’t matter that you’re different if the customers don’t care), and quantifiable (if your customer service really is great, there should be a number to it, like “guaranteed response within 24 hours”).

Once you’ve defined your competitive advantage, let your employees and customers know. Make sure your difference is the main message in marketing, sales training, and networking. Put it on your signs, business cards, and website, and make sure your employees can answer questions from customers about how your products and services are special. Your customers want to know why they should buy from you - give them great reasons!

Leadership Henry Class Gains Insight on Economic Development On Wednesday, December 19 2012, the Leadership Henry Class of 2013 spent the day at the Georgia Resource Center during the program’s Economic Development Day. Georgia Power’s Economic Development team presented information on the services offered to companies considering Georgia as a possibility for growth or expansion. The services include demographic facts

and figures, aerial photography, interactive maps and site and community tours.

Georgia Electric Membership Corporation’s Economic Development team shared with the class how their team assists their member cooperatives in improving the economic vitality of the communities they serve which includes a focus on retail and commercial development. Bob

Will we lose Xpress bus service?

The next time you see an Xpress bus be sure to give it a thumb’s up.

Xpress buses are expected to have provided over 2 million boardings last year, which will make it one of their best years ever. State government’s funding of Xpress bus services is one of the most cost effective investments the state can make to address the metro Atlanta region’s traffic congestion, both inside and outside the perimeter. Xpress bus service also helps keep our air cleaner.

Every work day, Xpress buses remove approximately 4,500 cars from metro Atlanta’s interstates. That’s the equivalent of a lane of bumper to bumper traffic stretching from the State Capitol up I-75/85 to Georgia 400, then north past I-285, over the Chattahoochee River and all the way up to Roswell. And that’s once in the morning and again in the afternoon.

From an environmental standpoint, Xpress buses provide considerable benefits to metro Atlanta’s air quality. If commuters reduce their annual miles driven by half by using Xpress buses, they eliminate over 11 thousand tons of automobile CO2 emissions.

Whether you live north, south, east or west of Atlanta, commuters presently have access to an Xpress bus. Xpress buses are available as far south as Coweta and Henry counties and as far north as Cherokee. Commuters in Rockdale, Douglas and Paulding counties can also use Xpress buses to get to and from work in downtown Atlanta.

The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) has served Henry County commuters since the launch of Xpress service in 2004 with Route 440 from the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton with a stop in Jonesboro en route to Downtown Atlanta. Henry County now has four routes from Stockbridge, McDonough and Hampton with routes 440 (Hampton-Jonesboro) and 432 (Stockbridge)

being the two most popular routes in the entire Xpress system. Henry County ‘s Xpress routes had more than 500,000 annual boardings (FY12).

And while the 33 Xpress bus routes may originate and terminate in metro Atlanta’s outlying counties, Xpress bus riders come from as far away as Columbus, Macon, Dahlonega, and Rome.

Xpress buses also provide 25 reverse commute routes that give in-town residents access to jobs outside the perimeter. This has positive economic impact at both ends of the bus route, which is why local Chambers of Commerce strongly support Xpress bus services.

Unfortunately, due to the unsuccessful outcome of last year’s Metro Atlanta regional TSPLOST referendum, future funding for Xpress bus services may be in jeopardy. Xpress buses are the only state funded and operated commuter transit services offered in Georgia, and, unlike MARTA which receives local sales tax funding, Xpress buses operate with only state and federal funds and fares paid by riders.

If Xpress buses are to continue to operate, we need the support of the governor and the legislature to continue state funding. The cost effectiveness of Xpress bus service is clearly demonstrated through the increased usage by commuters who choose to ride Xpress buses instead of driving their cars. The environmental benefits are clearly demonstrated by the considerable reduction in automobile emissions when using Xpress buses. And the traffic congestion benefits are obvious with the removal of thousands of cars daily from metro Atlanta interstates and downtown.

So let your legislators and the governor know that continued funding of Xpress bus services is good for everyone in the metro Atlanta region; whether you ride the bus or not.

CVB Takes Advertising to TV Henry County has a lot to offer visitors and through a series of 30-second commercials the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau is working to spread the word. He sees companies as being slow to hire workers. He talked about the need to participate in a global economy as more important than ever before because our nation itself requires international support.

“2014 is going to be a great year,” said Dr. Dhawan, “we just have to get through 2013.”

While corporate America is hesitant, the good news is that local government (which makes up 12% of the economy) is where growth will occur, along

with education and healthcare.

He discussed our nation’s relationship with China and affirmed that “China matters to our economy.”

He predicts that job growth will go up somewhat in 2013 but will be better in 2014, as will real estate values and housing.

He also doesn’t see inflation as much of a problem in the next five years. Dr. Dhawan ended his presentation on a humorous note reminding us we have lost (Johnny) Cash, (Bob) Hope and (Steve) Jobs in recent years, stating that we’d better try to keep (Kevin) Bacon alive!

One Down; Seven to Go! Southern Crescent Technical College Breaks Ground on Henry County Campus

Henry County residents are another step closer to attending college at a campus in their community as Southern Crescent Technical College broke ground January 10 for the first of eight proposed buildings to be erected on the campus adjacent to Henry County High School.

This important groundbreaking is the culmination of much hard work, vision and planning by Chamber leaders, community leaders, county officials and education champions.

CEO, county government and business entities, McDonough Mayor Billy Copeland, Chairman of the Academy for Advanced Studies Herschel Arant and Chamber president Kay Pippin were on hand for the ceremonies.

The ceremony included a celebration of the Academy for Advanced Studies, Henry County’s new charter college and career academy and it’s recently acquired $3.4 million state grant. District High School students beginning the Fall 2013 school year will enjoy the option of receiving an expanded program of training in potential career, technical and agricultural courses.

Investment Mistakes to Watch for. . . at Different Stages of Life As an investor, how can you avoid making mistakes? It’s not always easy, because investing can be full of potential pitfalls. But if you know what the most common mistakes are at different stages of an investor’s life, you may have a better chance of avoiding these costly errors.

Let’s take a look at some investment mistakes you’ll want to avoid when you’re young, when you’re in mid-career, when you’re nearing retirement and when you’ve just retired.

When you’re young. . .

Mistake: Investing too conservatively (or not at all) — If you’re just entering the working world, you may not have a lot of money with which to invest.

But don’t wait until your income grows — putting away even a small amount each month can prove quite helpful. Additionally, don’t make the mistake of investing primarily in short-term vehi-

cles that may preserve your principal but offer little in the way of growth potential. Instead, position your portfolio for growth. Of course, stock prices will always fluctuate, but you potentially have decades to overcome these short-term declines. Since this money is for retirement, your focus should be on the long term — and it’s impossible to reach long-term goals with short-term, highly conservative investments.

When you’re in mid-career. . .

Mistake: Putting insufficient funds into your retirement accounts — At this stage of your life, your earning power may well have increased substantially. As a result, you should have more money available to invest for the future — specifically, you may now be able to “max out” on your IRA and still boost your contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as your 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b). These retire-

ment accounts offer tax advantages that you may not receive in ordinary savings and investment accounts. Try to put more money into these retirement accounts every time your salary goes up.

When you’re nearing retirement. . .

Mistake: Not having balance in your investment portfolio — When they’re within just a few years of retirement, some people may go to extremes, either investing too aggressively to try to make up for lost time or too conservatively in an attempt to avoid potential declines. Both these strategies could be risky. So as you near retirement, seek to balance your portfolio. This could mean shifting some of your investment dollars into fixed-income vehicles to provide for your current income needs while still owning stocks that provide the growth potential to help keep up with inflation in your retirement years.

When you’ve just retired. . .

Mistake: Failing to determine an appropriate withdrawal rate — Upon reaching retirement, you will need to carefully manage the money you’ve accumulated in your IRA, 401(k) and all other investment accounts.

Obviously, your chief concern is outliving your money, so you’ll need to determine how much you can withdraw each year. To arrive at this figure, take into account your current age, your projected longevity, the amount of money you’ve saved and the estimated rate of return you’re getting from your investments. This type of calculation is complex, so you may want to consult with a financial professional.

By avoiding these errors, you can help ensure that, at each stage of your life, you’re doing what you can to keep making progress toward your financial goals.
