Founded in 1967, an organization was formed with the intent of being a highly proactive and visible influence in Henry County and the entire South Metro Region. Fifty years later, that organization, known as the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is still going strong. The Chamber had only a handful of members when it was founded in 1967. The Annual Chamber Awards Dinner & 50th Anniversary Celebration will be held at the Eagle’s Landing Country Club on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 6:00 pm. he Chamber of Commerce serves as the voice of the business community, provides quality services and programs that meet the needs of its members, creates a legacy of leadership for the future and improves the economic environment of the community. I am honored to join the former civic leaders who have served to Chair the Board of Directors of the Chamber, and to have an opportunity to contribute to the Chamber goals. The Chamber of Commerce has just completed a successful year, and is fortunate to be fiscally sound, and to enjoy high levels of participation from its members. The Chamber staff, assisted by dedicated volunteers, provides networking opportunities, educational programs, recognition of civic excellence and effective advocacy for the community. As Chairman, my intention is to continue the tradition of excellence that the Chamber has achieved, and to support ongoing efforts to engage the Henry County community in creating a better place to work, play, pray and stay. Approximately two years ago, the leadership of the Chamber acted on conversations held at its annual Intergovernmental Retreat, which advocated for active community influence on Henry County and its economic progress. The result of

this action was to create and assist in the initiation of a community economic development organization that has come to be recognized as One Henry. While initiated by the Chamber, the One Henry Organization has developed into an independent organization which is governed by a separate Board, steering committee and its volunteer participants. The Chamber continues to provide administrative support to One Henry as well as participating in leadership positions. It is my goal, as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, to continue to provide this support to One Henry and use the strength of the Chamber of Commerce to actively support One Henry’s initiatives. The five work teams of One Henry have defined their roles and each has developed its portfolio of work, in concert with the overall steering committee of One Henry. As a result of this, the teams are committed to working to bring success to Workforce Development efforts, Professional and Corporate solutions, Industrial and Advanced manufacturing, Arts and Leisure as well as to promote the Image and Communications of our community. You can see their work at onehenry.info. This effort has identified talented leaders who are unselfishly making substantial contributions to the community.

Some ongoing initiatives that are actively being pursued include the development of a business incubator to promote the growth of high tech companies in Henry County; Community Improvement Districts to allow for transportation and beautification improvements; an additional interchange on I-75 to facilitate the separation of heavy truck traffic from residential traffic along Highway 155; the development of a Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) presence in south metro and interaction between industry and educational institutions to ensure that the workforce needs of our commercial enterprises are being provided by our educational partners. I encourage you to consider active participation in the Chamber this year. Whether you attend one of the Business Booster Luncheons or Business After Hours networking sessions, participate in a committee activity or volunteer with One Henry, there is a place for you to become part of something rewarding and that will be of interest to you. On January 23rd of this year, the Chamber will host Henry County Day at the Capitol, and you can start a year of participation by being there. The legacy of Chamber initiatives is one of success, and I hope that you will join us in continuing that great tradition.

Leadership Henry attends Education Day The 2016-17 Leadership Henry class went back to school for Education Day in November. The state of education in Henry County was the program for the day, and the class went from one end of the county to the other learning about how we are preparing our students for life after graduation. The morning kicked off with a visit to Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy beginning with breakfast and a theatrical performance by the school’s drama department. Class members also had the opportunity to tour the school’s facilities and hear presentations from administrators, athletics and fine arts departments. Next, the class visited Locust Grove Middle School where they learned how the school has implemented personalized learning over the past few years. School leaders shared with the class how the school embraces a personalized approach to education that allows students to learn at their own pace through a variety of methods. Students are able to move through the content at their own pace using a rigorous curriculum that leverages their strengths and

connects with their college and career interests. The Academy for Advanced Studies adjacent to Henry County High School was the next stop for the class. The Academy is a charter school available to all high school students that expands educational opportunities in secondary and postsecondary course work. Through partnerships within the local community, the goal of the Academy for Advanced Studies is to ensure the seamless transition for students to college and/or careers while developing a viable future workforce. A phenomenal lunch prepared by students from

the Academy’s Culinary Arts program was enjoyed while school administrators shared some of the initiatives and vision for the Academy. Leadership Henry got a tour of the state-of-the art facility that includes over twenty career pathways including supply chain management, engineering, healthcare, and energy and power. The program day concluded at Southern Crescent Technical College’s Henry County campus in McDonough where class members met with President Randall Peters. Leadership Henry had the opportunity to tour the building and learn about the current state of post-secondary education in the

county, as well as future plans for expansion for the SCTC campus. Education Day concluded with an Energy Bus session, where the class discussed their reading and how it applies to their business and personal lives. The December program for Leadership Henry will focus on Healthcare in Henry County.

Youth Leadership Henry explores educational opportunities

Southern States LLC receives proclamation marking the 100 year history of the Factory in Hampton.

History made by newly elected Henry County, Stockbridge officials. Henry County has its first African-American chair in June Wood and Stockbridge its first female mayor in Judy Neal.

The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2017 met at the Henry Schools Academy for Advanced Studies campus in McDonough on the morning of Saturday, December 3, to learn about new educational opportunities in our community. Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Leadership, Aaryn Schmuhl, welcomed the class and engaged with them about the school system and where it is going with its “2020 Vision” for system wide personalized learning by the year 2020. In doing so, he led them through several fun team tasks that illustrated the way that, just like functional teams collaborate in the “real world”, the Academy fosters learning experiences that will prepare them for that. He did a Q&A with the class that was very comprehensive, and showed that the class was very interested in both the Academy and the mission and vision of the school system, especially personalized learning. The CEO of the Academy, John Uesseler, described the variety of offerings at the academy, and a little of its history; including the importance of the collaboration between business,

community, education, and political leaders and the One Henry initiative that identified the Academy as a priority and leveraged the resources necessary to make it happen. The class then took a tour of the Academy and learned about the myriad opportunities for preparation for post-secondary success that are offered there. The class enjoyed a lunch of spaghetti, salad, Italian bread, and cookies; all prepared from scratch and served by the Academy’s culinary arts students and their chef. While at the Academy, there was a presentation to class member Mr. Sebastian Cowart, recognizing his leadership skills demonstrated at the Orientation and Teambuilding days.

The class also recognized Miss Hunter Gause for her initiative in creating marketing collateral for the class’ upcoming youth job fair. On behalf of the Youth Leadership Henry Board of Directors, Chairman Don Dunlap praised Mr. Cowart and Miss Gause for epitomizing the qualities that the program works to develop in these young people during their time in our program. Hopefully they enjoyed the carry bags and gift items from the variety of Chamber of Commerce members that they received as part of their recognition! After leaving the Academy, the class visited the Henry Campus of Southern Crescent Technical College. They discussed some of the

opportunities available to Henry students at that facility and the plans for its eventual expansion to an eight building campus. The last stop was the Mercer University Henry Regional Academic Center. There the class had a great discussion about the variety of programs offered at the various campuses of Mercer University, and learned about the Henry center, which is geared more to adults that are finishing a degree or getting an additional credential to enhance their employability. All in all, everyone had a great day learning about education in our community, and are looking forward to the class visit to Piedmont Henry Hospital in January! hamber Ambassadors are representatives from member businesses that attend events, ribbon cuttings and grand openings on behalf of the Chamber. They are the “face of the Chamber” in the community and many times the first contact new businesses have with the Chamber. They also make up our volunteer force that allows the Chamber to put on events such as our annual Golf Classic, Member Appreciation Lunch, Chamber Connection Visits, and our Membership Campaign. In 2016 this wonderful group of volunteers, led by Ambassador Chair Genie Griffin, attended over 60 ribbon cuttings, made over 150 Chamber Connection visits to Chamber members, and brought in 44 new members during our Membership Campaign. This yearʼs Ambassador of the Year, Ed Taylor is Assistant Vice-President of First National Bank in Hampton. Ed attended most of the ribbon cuttings, always engaging with the new members and making them feel welcome. He assisted with the Connection Visits and was always eager to volunteer for Chamber events. Ed went out of his way to attend ribbon cuttings and welcome new businesses to the Chamber. Even on weekends and after hours, if there was a Chamber event you could find him there. Ed has been a great Ambassador for the Chamber and his community.

NOVEMBER business aFter Hours RECAP The Henry County Chamber of Commerce hosted its monthly Business Boosters Luncheon at the Chambers Hudgins Room on Thursday, November 17, 2016. This event was a great opportunity to learn how to protect your business from The Labor Department’s overtime rule effective December 1, 2016. Attorney Melissa Malcom advises business owners, managers, and human resources professionals throughout metro-Atlanta and across Georgia, from Athens to Macon. Her areas of practice include all areas of business and employment law, ranging from overtime and minimum wage, defending discrimination claims and unemployment hearings, to contracts, partnership agreements, bylaws, and operating agreements. Community and business leaders packed the room at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce’s BBL all to hear about how overtime violations are the biggest employment law risk to business. Those in attendance learned more about staying safe when the minimum salary to

avoid overtime jumps to $47,476 on Dec. 1. They also learned why 1099s are not a safety net and how lunch breaks can get businesses in big trouble. She also touched on how the only right way to have a “no overtime allowed” rule is to walk employees through the termination process. The event resulted in many conversations and great dialogue about The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). For more information on The Overtime Rule and how you can get this right, please contact The Malcom Firm, P.C. at 678.833.9178, or

On the evening of December 8, 2016, we held our Annual Chamber Holiday Party made possible by our friends at the Atlanta Motor Speedway! The event was held in Club One of Atlanta Motor Speedway and President & General Manager, Ed Clark, was on site to welcome guests. Over 200 people came out for the festivities, including Chamber members, guests, friends,

and family who joined us, and with such an enthusiastic holiday spirit! The food provided by Levy’s Restaurant was amazing. Attendees enjoyed delicious food and refreshments along with some complimentary drinks from the fully stocked bloody mary bar. The Grinch was hysterical as always and was on hand to hand out door prize donations. We had so many door prizes to giveaway

thanks to our wonderful Chamber members who continue to be the reason that we do what we do. Everyone had a great time at the festive celebration. ABOUT CLUB ONE Have your next event at the luxury mega suite, Club One. Club One has three full service bars and seating with the best views in the house. The Club also offers a breathtaking top side view of the race track.
