MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Leonard Moreland President and CEO at Heritage Bank 2016 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce
JUNE WOOD
G
“
EPIC Henry
rowing up in Clayton County in the 1970’s, I remember driving along Jodeco Road into Henry County. It was a great place to drive, enjoy the countryside, and even get lost if that were your intention. Today I am a Henry County resident living off that same Jodeco Road. I can travel to a nearby grocery store, access top rated shopping and restaurants, and visit a nearby doctor’s office or top rated hospital within just minutes of my home. Henry County has come a long way and there is no doubt that we have a lot to be proud of and an obligation to those that come after us to make it even better. We should all want an EPIC Henry. As I look back over the years, I find that there is one common characteristic that defines success. That characteristic is great leadership. We have been blessed to have great leaders in Henry County all with different leadership styles and approaches. As I have been preparing for my opportunity to lead, I have had the opportunity to watch and learn from some great leaders right here at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. Our outgoing Chair, June Wood, exemplifies great leadership. Leaders must have the desire to make the tough decisions and the vision to see where it leads. Leaders need to have the ability to listen
This is a tough and competitive world and we all need help from time to time...
and participate in the process. Leaders must have a thick skin and determination to succeed. But in my humble opinion a great leader must have a servant’s heart. June Wood checks all of the boxes. June is a bridge builder, and our Chamber, our County and I are better for knowing and following her. Now where do we go with Leonard Moreland at the Chair? I have asked myself this question over and over again. I strongly believe that the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is undebatably the strongest non-political force in Henry County. We have achieved this status by providing direction when needed, serving as a catalyst when necessary, and offering opportunity to those that desired a voice. The membership rolls of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce are filled with the movers and shakers, the titans of commerce, the most respected and most influential, but that is not what makes the Chamber successful. The Henry County Chamber is successful because we offer opportunity to anyone that is willing to invest in themselves and their community. I come into contact every day with small business owners that are looking for solutions. This is a tough and competitive world and we all need help from time to time and the Chamber is the perfect place to find someone that has already walked the path you are navigating today. My vision for Henry County is EPIC (Economic Prosperity for Industry and Citizens). One person working alone can raise the tide, but imagine our successes if we all worked together. I believe that if we can raise the tide collectively, then all of our boats will float much higher. Imagine if our Citizens, Industry, Government, Schools and
our Faith Community were all pulling and pushing in the same direction. Instead of the 775 businesses and organizations that make up the Chamber, what if 2,000 joined forces? When it comes down to it, we all want the same thing in our lives. Peace, safety and security for our families, education for our kids and economic opportunities for our livelihood. The real question is how best can we achieve this? How can we raise the tide? I submit to you that the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is that vehicle. The Henry County Chamber builds bridges between our city and county’s elected officials, supports the efforts of the Development Authority, interfaces on the behalf of the business community on regional and state levels, offers opinions and direction of pro-business laws and regulations and has been instrumental in the founding and development of the Southern Crescent Technical College campus. The Chamber also supports the Henry County School System in numerous ways but especially through the creation of the E2 Alliance and now, along with the Henry County Development Authority, has served as the birthplace of the One Henry Economic Alliance. Much has been done with 775, imagine what we could do with a force of 2,000. Again, Henry County has been blessed with past leadership. Will our kids and grandkids be able to say the same about our leadership? There is work to be done and the Henry County Chamber of Commerce will continue to step up to the plate and do more than its fair share; will you? Will we be able to raise the tide? Will our kids and grandkids inherit a better Henry County? You can count on me to do my very best, Henry County is my HOME!

Approximately 70% of CEOs and executive teams have admitted to feeling like a fake or fraud at some point during their leadership tenure. This phenomenon is called ‘Imposter Syndrome’ and is common in high-achievers and people in high-profile authority positions. People like Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, actress Kate Winslett, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, actor Tom Hanks, and author Seth Godin have all admitted to feeling like frauds. The Imposter Syndrome is characterized by chronic self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy, even when there is a track record that proves otherwise. You and your executive team may find yourselves struggling with similar doubts and fears: you don’t have enough experience to lead your organization; you’re not the expert that everyone thinks you are; luck, not talent, has brought you this far; etc. These fears and insecurities can lead to dysfunctional behavior, such as: not wanting to appear vulnerable; a lack of honest communication; and failure to build a collaborative culture… all the things that will stagnate corporate growth. Here are three things that you can do to overcome the fear:
1. Assemble a braintrust. 294965-1
5
If you’re the smartest person in your circle, get a new circle or add smarter people. As you grow in leadership and influence, it becomes even more vital that you seek
out counsel, mentorship, and coaching. You don’t feel like an imposter when you readily admit what you don’t know, then put a braintrust around you that can help you navigate the unknowns. Being around the right people can put 360-degree genius at your disposal.
2. Be brave.
Leaders often have to make choices about an uncertain future... choices that may impact everyone around them. Uncertainty and ambiguity require creativity and courage. Be brave in your workplace and make the best decisions that you can with the best information that’s available to you at the time. It’s all you can do. Release yourself from the pressures of pursuing perfection.
3. Remember it’s not about you. Take the focus off yourself and focus on creating value for your customers and your community. Businesses solve problems with goods, services, job creation, philanthropy, mentoring, and advocacy. When you’re trying to make the world a little bit better, you fuel your cause with your strengths. This leaves little time to focus on perceived weaknesses. To learn more about how you can grow as a business leader and develop your organization, contact The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at morrow@ georgiasbdc.org, or call 678-466-5100.

CHAMBER BRIEFS CONGRATULATIONS TO...
The 2015-16 Leadership Henry class went back to school for Education Day in November. The state of education in Henry County was the program for the day, and the class went from one end of the county to the other learning how we are preparing our students for life after high school. The morning kicked off with breakfast and an amazing sneak peak of Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy’s The Crucible performed by the school’s drama department. Class members also heard presentations from school administrators, athletics and fine arts departments.

Next, the class visited Excel Academy in McDonough. Previously known as Patrick Henry High School, the school offers many opportunities for student success with a small, caring and academically challenging program that has a special campus atmosphere. School Superintendent Rodney Bowler spoke to the class, and several
students shared their personal experiences and achievements before giving them a tour of the facility. Just across the parking lot, the Academy for Advanced Studies was the next stop. The Academy is a charter school available to all high school students that expands educational opportunities in secondary and postsecondary course work. Through partnerships within the local community, the goal of the Academy for Advanced Studies is to ensure the seamless transition for students to college and/or careers while developing a viable future workforce. Leadership Henry got a tour of the state-of-the art facility that includes over twenty career pathways including supply chain management, engineering, healthcare, and energy and power. The class enjoyed a phenomenal lunch prepared by students from the Academy’s Culinary Arts program
before boarding the bus for their next stop. Hampton High School was the last stop of the day, with a focus on personalized learning initiatives in Henry County. With a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the school embraces a personalized approach to education that allows students to learn at their own pace through a variety of methods. Class members enjoyed learning about how HHS is using technology, music and choices to ensure student success. Education Day concluded with an Energy Bus session, where the class discussed their reading and how it applies to their business and personal lives. The December program for Leadership Henry will focus on Economic Development in Henry County.
Education Day 2015 for the Youth Leadership Henry Class The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2016 met at the Henry Schools Academy for Advanced Studies campus in McDonough on the morning of Saturday December 5 to learn about new educational opportunities in our community. Superintendent of Schools, Rodney Bowler, welcomed the class and engaged with them about the school system and where it is going with its “2020 Vision” for systemwide personalized learning by the year 2020. In doing so, he led them through several fun team tasks that illustrated the way that just like functional teams collaborate in the “real world” the Academy fosters learning experiences that will prepare them for that. The CEO of the Academy, John Uesseler, described the variety of offerings at the academy, and a little of its history; including the importance of the collaboration between business, community, education, and political leaders and the E2 initiative that identified the
a lot of leadership lessons with our class during the tour that will be valuable as our class members plan for their vision of future success. Dual-Enrollment liaison Drew Todd described the process for enrollment in “Move On When Ready” programs, how that looks for students, and did a lot of good Q&A with class members. Academy as a priority and leveraged the resources necessary to make it happen. We then took a tour of the Academy and learned about the myriad opportunities for preparation for post-secondary success that are offered there. We enjoyed a lunch of Chicken fettucini alfredo prepared and served by the Academy’s culinary arts students. We then visited the Henry Campus of Southern Crescent Technical College. Director Scott Ross took us on a tour of the facility describing the variety of opportunities available there. He also shared
We ended the day with a presentation to class member Meet Patel, recognizing his leadership skills demonstrated on Teambuilding day. On behalf of the Youth Leadership Henry Board of Directors, Chairman Don Dunlap praised Mr. Patel for his leadership in helping the class accomplish a teambuilding task more efficiently than any other class. We hope Meet will enjoy his Shane’s gift certificate! If you want to keep up with class events and programs, we encourage you to “like” the Youth Leadership Henry Facebook page and follow us on Twitter @YLHenry.

AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR
Minnie Hooks C
hamber Ambassadors are representatives from member businesses that attend events, ribbon cuttings and grand openings on behalf of the Chamber. They are the “face of the Chamber” in the community and many times the first contact new businesses have with the Chamber. They also make up our volunteer force that allows the Chamber to put on events such as the annual Golf Classic, Member Appreciation Lunch, Bells, Bulls & Bucks and our Membership Campaign. In 2015 this wonderful group of volunteers, led by Ambassador Chair Genie Griffin, attended over 80 ribbon cuttings, made over 150 Chamber Connection visits to Chamber members, and brought in over 35 new members during our Membership Campaign. This year’s Ambassador of the Year, Minnie Hooks, is an individual member. Minnie attended most of the ribbon cuttings, always engaging with the new members and making them feel welcome. She assisted with the Connection Visits and was always eager to volunteer for Chamber events. Minnie is a retired school principal from Florida, and joined the Chamber in 2014 when she moved to Henry County. She immediately got involved in the Ambassador Committee and hasn’t slowed down since. Minnie volunteers with many other organizations, and is a great Ambassador for the Chamber and the community as a whole.

APPRECIATION RECOGNITION The Henry County Chamber of Commerce Education Committee is proud to once again host Henry County’s STAR Breakfast at 8 a.m. on February 23, 2016 at Eagle’s Landing Country Club. During the annual event, Chamber officials will honor our county’s 2016 STAR Students and Teachers. Chamber members are invited to show support for the STAR Breakfast by sponsoring at one of the levels below.
The initial photo post with the hashtag will start the fans’ “Race to Henry” to earn a commemorative t-shirt. When they cross the finish line at the CVB’s booth on race weekend, a selfie station photoop awaits. Fans will be able to use green screen technology to virtually place themselves in Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Victory Lane. They will be able to walk away with a digital version of their Victory Lane photo that’s ready to post and a commemorative t-shirt. “We hope to continue the online momentum Atlanta Motor Speedway started with the announcement of their “Perfect Race Weather Guarantee,” said Tourism Director Laura Luker. “People are getting their news as well as their travel inspirations from social media so we want to make sure the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 and the Henry County CVB are a part of that conversation.”
