Mid-Year Progress Checks: Recommit to Your Goals Judiffier pearson, business Consultant the university of georgia sbdC at Clayton state university

The first half of 2016 has passed and it’s time for your business’ mid-year progress report. Have you taken advantage of the opportunities that you identified at the beginning of the year? You know, the ones that you listed in your SWOT analysis to help you achieve your objectives. If you haven’t taken advantage of those opportunities, it’s not too late. Recommit to the process of achieving your goals. Carve out a full day on your calendar, or even a week, to work on the action items that can help you get back on track. Accelerate as many of those activities as you can. Before you know it, you will have redeemed much of the lost time from the first half of the year and will have jumpstarted your strategic plan. Don’t have a SWOT? Here’s a quick overview of how to do one. STEP 1: Define your organization’s (S) trengths, (W)eaknesses, (O)pportunities, and (T)hreats. Make a 2 x 2 matrix that that creates 4 quadrants. Record 3-5 items for each section. In quadrant 1, list your and your company’s strengths. These are the competencies and resources that give you/ your company an advantage and can help you seize opportunities. In quadrant 2, list your and your

company’s weaknesses. What areas need improvement? What causes you to lose sales? If not shored up, weaknesses can cause your company to implode. In quadrant 3, identify interesting trends and opportunities that exist in the marketplace that you could take advantage of. What problems are waiting for you to solve? Finally, list the external forces that could threaten your company in quadrant 4. What could blindside you and prevent you from capitalizing on opportunities? STEP 2: Analyze your SWOT. How can you use your strengths to maximize the opportunities you listed? How can you overcome or neutralize your weaknesses? Can any of your strengths be used to mitigate threats? STEP 3: Lay Out Your Plan. Take the answers from Step 2 to define your objective(s) and develop an action plan. Once you complete this exercise, you should have much of the direction and data you need to seize the opportunities before you. To receive further assistance with strategic planning, contact The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at morrow@georgiasbdc.org, or call 678466-5100.

Leadership Henry Class of 2016-17 Announced

Learn about the great things that are happening in our community…

The Locust Grove Wildcats (33-5-1) capped off a stellar season with a 3-1 win against the Buford Wolves (32-5) to win the Class AAAA baseball state championship. Community leaders had the opportunity to meet with State Representative Brian Strickland and TCSG Commissioner Gretchen Corbin to thank them for their leadership in obtaining $16.1 million dollars in funding for the second building of the Henry Campus of Southern Crescent Technical College. We particularly thank Rep. Strickland and the rest of our Henry County Legislative Delegation for their hard work in shepherding the funding request through the recent legislative session and helping to build Henry County’s workforce for the future. Georgia United Credit Union Invited the Community to an Open House at Student-Run McDonough Branch on June 1 at 401 E. Tomlinson Street in McDonough.

Congrats to Henry County Schools HR Dept on “Best in Class” award!

Congrats to the Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) on a clean sweep of the awards for the best operating water and wastewater plants in Georgia during the recent GAWP Spring Conference in Columbus. On May 24, 2016, The Heritage Community Foundation presented a $500 grant to Shane Persaud, Regional Director, United Way, and Betsy Brown, County Engagement Director, United Way, to purchase gas cards for Henry County veterans.

The members of the Leadership Henry Class of 2016-2017 have been announced. A program of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Henry is a 10-month program that develops participants’ leadership potential and introduces them to community leaders, heritage, challenges and services. “We are excited about the class for the coming year,” said J. D. Hardin, chair of the Leadership Henry Board of Directors. “We have another exceptional group of leaders representing a cross-section of the community.” The class year will begin in August with a Kick-Off Luncheon followed by an overnight retreat. Each month will focus on a different aspect of the

community. From healthcare and public safety to state government and non-profit organizations, class members have the opportunity to learn about challenges facing the County and interact with the leaders working to address them. “Leadership Henry brings together individuals from across the county to work and learn together,” explains Hardin. “The program introduces participants to new leadership skills and encourages them to apply them to their emerging leadership roles in the community.” Using the leadership skills and concepts gained through the program, the class members will plan and execute a class legacy project that will benefit the community for years to come. The Class of 20152016 recently completed a renovation of the Henry County Fire Safety Theater, funded entirely through corporate and private donations.

Business After Hours is one of the Chamber’s premier networking events for members. Professionals utilize this opportunity to discuss and share ideas in a relaxed, social atmosphere while learning about other member businesses. Our July Business After Hours will be hosted by Elite Chamber Member,

Heritage Bank. Heritage Bank has been serving metro Atlanta’s Southern Crescent since 1955. The independent community bank has six full service offices, features a well-rounded offering of commercial and consumer products, and is an active, involved member of the community it serves.

They have some of the best and brightest professionals in the industry. Take this opportunity to “enlighten” yourself about their products while you mingle with colleagues and enjoy refreshments. Business After Hours are free networking events for members and their invited (adult) guests.

Business After Hours is a monthly networking event designed to bring 40-50 business professionals together to meet and build relationships in an informal setting. Each event is hosted by a different Chamber member and is a great way to meet new people and see the diverse business community in Henry County.
