I recently drove across town to a local dress boutique ready to purchase outfit for an upcoming event only to find a note on the door that said “At lunch, back in 20 minutes”. Seriously? It was 3:00 in the afternoon- 20 minutes from WHEN? Can you imagine going to Target or Wendy’s to find that sign in the window? Or discovering that your bank closed early because business was slow. If it sounds silly, you’re right – it is silly. It’s also bad business. When your customers are ready purchase your product they expect you to be open (at least during conventional business hours) and ready to provide quality service. A paying customer seeks instant gratification and if you have sporadic or inconsistent hours, they will go away in anger, run to your competitor and never return. Not only will they run, they’ll tell the world about the bad experience or service that you didn’t provide. The internet offers countless ways to get the word out on bad businesses and thus, your social media nightmare will begin. If business is slow at the moment,
rather than closing the doors, why not use that time to work on a marketing strategy to grow your business? Don’t view it as an opportunity to run personal errands or take an extended lunch break. Going into business is a serious decision. If you decide to be in business then, BE IN BUSINESS. It makes no sense to develop a great product or service and then frustrate your customers by not being available when they’re ready to spend their money. If you have more important things to do than provide service to your customers, don’t start a business, get a job. Successful business owners recognize the importance of meeting their customers’ need for instant gratification. Having inconsistent hours, closing early when sales are slow or allowing employees to leave a note on the door will foster distrust and could eventually drive you out of business. Make a commitment to make a good impression. The SBDC is here to help you with your business operations challenges. Please contact us at 678 466-5100 or morrow@sbdc.org for more information.

CHAMBER BRIEFS Learn about the great things that are happening in our community…
Six of Henry County Schools’ ten high schools and five students were recognized in April during the Georgia Department of Education’s International Skills Award Ceremony. Congratulations to Marcia Taylor President and CEO of Bennett International Group, LLC on receiving Clayton State University’s Honorary Doctorate of Commerce on May 7th! Congratulations to the Leadership Henry Class of 2016! Leadership Henry is a program of the Henry County Chamber. The mission of Leadership Henry is to identify, encourage & develop leadership abilities so that its participants grow both personally & professionally.
Youth Leadership Henry graduates its Class of 2016 Members of the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2016 met as a group for the last time at the Locust Grove Event Center on May 10, to celebrate their graduation from the program. These 41 high school sophomores from all across our county, have been participating in monthly programs since their selection for the class in August 2015. After their orientation to the program; they learned about teambuilding, education, public safety, healthcare, state government, county history; and put on a job fair for youth in our community as a way to use leadership skills and give back to their
community. At the graduation, they heard remarks from classmember Anthony Johnson about what he learned from his participation, as well as the Guest Speaker, Earl Parker, who tied leadership skills to love for family and fellow man. These young people, as they received their certificates, were exhorted to use their skills and knowledge to help make Henry County a better place to live, work, and play. Applications for rising high school sophomores are being taken for the class of 2017 on the youthleadershiphenry.com site.
If you know a rising sophomore (public, private, homeschool, online - they just have
to be a Henry County resident) have them look at the Youth Leadership Henry Facebook
page to see what we do, and visit youthleadershiphenry.com to apply online.
Leadership Henry participates in Community Day The Leadership Henry Class of 2015-16 held their last class in April and focused on some of the great non-profit organizations that serve the community. The morning session included representatives from local organizations who serve Henry County. They each shared with the class about the services their group provides and their current needs. Following the presentations, the class had an opportunity to visit the organizations’ exhibits set up around the room and network with them.
Next, the class visited A Friend’s House, a home for children in crisis located in McDonough. Nan Jenkins, Director of Development, and Gary Wright, Executive Director, shared about the important needs that A Friend’s House addresses
and gave the class a tour of the facility. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta sponsored lunch, and Laura Turner, Community Development Officer for CHOA, talked about some of the community programs offered by the
pediatric healthcare system. After lunch, they boarded the bus and headed the Henry County Performing Arts Center for a presentation from the arts community, led by Lynna Schmidt. After hearing about some of the great
organizations working to further the arts in Henry County, the class took to the stage for a little improv! The next stop for the afternoon was the Heritage Park Veterans Museum. They learned about the mission of the museum,
enjoyed looking at the thousands of artifacts housed on-site, and visited the Veterans Wall of Honor. The class finished off the day at the Hood Street Art Center. They heard from fellow class member Beth Healy about some of the initiatives of the gallery and the artists they showcase. This year’s class is also putting the finishing touches on their Legacy Project, the renovation and rejuvenation of the Fire Safety Theater for the Henry County Fire Department. The project was completed in May and open to students next fall.
