MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

JUNE WOOD

Rod Meadows Partner at Meadows, Macie & Sutton, P.C 2017 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

Now that summer vacation has arrived for our local school systems, we all begin planning on where we are going to “get away” for vacation. No matter how exciting or how relaxing the trip, it always is wonderful, at the end of vacation, to get home to our own beds, surroundings, friends, family, church and community. Recently, in a trip through South Georgia, I was dismayed to see the number of communities with closed businesses, banks, and even hospitals. Meanwhile, here in Henry County, we are blessed with continued growth, vitality ---- and, yes, traffic. To the extent that our growth provides us challenges, those challenges are blessings compared to those being endured by many communities outside of the dynamic

influence of metropolitan Atlanta. The success that we enjoy is, to a great extent, attributable to our geography, our proximity to Atlanta and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and our 7 exits on Interstate 75. However, that growth has been enhanced over the last 50 years by the efforts of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, and the Chamber’s cooperation with the Henry County Development Authority. In just the last several years, the Chamber in cooperation with its various business and governmental partners, has been instrumental in developing a campus for Southern Crescent Technical College here in Henry County, in assisting our county leaders in securing addi-

tional funding for traffic improvements and in enhancing governmental cooperation through our annual Intergovernmental Retreat. During this 50th anniversary year, the Chamber truly has a reason to “Celebrate Our Past”. As we plan this year’s Intergovernmental Retreat, support the efforts of our One Henry Initiative, and provide opportunities for Henry County citizens to fill more than 1500 good-paying new jobs being brought to the community by our Development Authority, we have equally good reasons to “Embrace Our Future”. Thank you to all the more than 700 businesses and individual members of the Chamber for all that you do to make life better here in Henry County.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Henry County Water Authority

Lindy Farmer, General Manager About Lindy Farmer

Lindy Farmer is the longest tenured chief executive of any water utility in the state of Georgia; thus, his leadership as General Manager of the Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) has been felt far beyond the borders of his home county. Farmer joined the HCWA as its first fulltime General Manager on March 1, 1982. Upon his arrival, he went to work providing the Authority with structure, in addition to leading the pursuit of some of the most critical capital projects for the Authority and Henry County to date. With many professional accolades attained during his 35-year tenure as the head of the HCWA, Farmer received the Southeast Regional Award of Merit in 2008 from the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) during its annual conference in Indian Wells, California. He also was inducted into lifetime membership of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP), which is the highest industry honor that is bestowed upon a water professional in the state. Henry County is a WaterFirst Community in Georgia and an EPA WaterSense promotional partner, both as a result of his leadership.

About Henry County Water Authority (HCWA)

The Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) was founded as an independent, autonomous enterprise (Authority) in 1961 by an Act of the Georgia General Assembly, to “acquire, construct, and thereafter operate and maintain projects embracing sources of water supply and the distribution and sale of water and related facilities.” The Act goes on to list the other duties of the Authority, including that to establish a sewer system. The HCWA is committed to its fundamental objective as a public utility – to provide and protect an adequate water supply and system, which includes wastewater collection and treatment of the highest quality, while meeting or exceeding all regulatory requirements as economically possible and in an environmentally-sound manner, for the growing residential, commercial and industrial needs of Henry County.

Community Support

The public use areas of the Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) continue to be well received by the utility’s customers, as well as residents and businesses of Henry County and the metro Atlanta region. Built in 1999, the HCWA Cubihatcha Outdoor Education

Center is a wetland enhancement and protection corridor created to improve and protect existing wildlife habitats, while also providing an avenue for public education and enjoyment. The HCWA developed this area as part of its wetland mitigation plan during construction of the Authority’s reservoir network. With the opening of Tussahaw Island in May of 2010, the HCWA has another public use area to accommodate outdoor education and recreation.

Chamber Involvement

tal Retreats, to further healthy relationships among the utility and fellow Henry County authorities, agencies, governments, businesses and Chamber leadership. However, the most important role the HCWA fulfills for the Chamber is the utility’s work in the community to foster a positive business climate. The HCWA has developed a comprehensive water and sewer system and related infrastructure, including a network of five drinking water reservoirs that hold approximately 18 billion gallons of raw water at full pool, which equates to approximately a year and a half worth of storage for HCWA customers. Because of these independent, local water resources that were planned and constructed by the HCWA, Henry County is largely selfsufficient in its water supply, production and distribution, which is not the case for many metro communities. As a result, the HCWA is a key player in the economic development and quality of life in Henry County.

The Henry County Water Authority is involved with the Chamber in several areas. First, an Authority representative has a seat on the Chamber Board of Directors, which allows for transparency in Authority operations and open lines of communications between the HCWA and Chamber, to exchange information concerning activities, policies and initiatives of the respective organizations. The HCWA has been active participants in the Chamber’s Annual Meetings as well, where the Authority sponsors a table for its delegation and guests. In fact, Location Details in February of 2017, the Chamber recognized Henry County Water Authority HCWA as its Business of the Year at the Annual 1695 Hwy 20 West Meeting and Awards Banquet. In addition, McDonough GA 30253 HCWA Management and Board Members (770) 957-6659 participate in the Chamber’s Intergovernmenhttp://www.hcwa.com

Incorporate Failure Into Your Strategic Plan by Judiffier Pearson, Business Consultant UGA SBDC at Clayton State University If your business has been going through a rough season, get started on re-writing the outcome of your next chapter. Here are three tips to help you think about failure differently and experience a rebirth of hope and direction. Take the sting out of failure by expecting it to come; then prepare for it. Failure is part of the success journey. Just as financial planners advise us not to put all of our eggs into one basket, don’t put all of your hopes, dreams and money into one vehicle with one predetermined outcome. Why? Because not all investments yield the desired return. There can be high, moderate, and low risk, but never “no risk.” Risk is inherent, even when you decide to give up and no longer compete. It’s called opportunity cost. What do you stand to lose by not capitalizing on your ideas, concepts, and insights? What value do you sacrifice for your stakeholders when you try to play it too safe? Know your risk tolerance and prepare accordingly. Learn from your mistakes and make adjustments. Successful entrepreneurs allow the force of creativity to drive them and harness the art of discipline to stay the course in order to reach their destinations… regardless of how stormy the seas may become. Many a sailor has told tales of battered, even destroyed

vessels. However, shipwreck and failed missions didn’t necessarily cause them to abandon their love for the sea, nor dissuade them from pursuing new ventures or revising old courses. Reflect on your past wins and losses, then assess your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This exercise can help you move forward strategically. Be agile in the face of adversity. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, lemon pepper chicken, lemon butter sauce, and lemon meringue pie. Every provocative story has tragedies and triumphs. Think of failure as your set up for a glorious comeback. Purposely write your own story with welcomed surprises to counterbalance the disappointing twists and turns that come with the territory of entrepreneurship. You never know what jewels you may stumble upon when you have to deviate from the original plan. Penicillin was the result of a contaminated experiment. Viagra was a happy accident. What may your failures lead you to discover? If you would like assistance with your next strategic planning retreat and additional information on how to transform your organization, contact The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at morrow@georgiasbdc.org, or call 678-466-5100.

CHAMBER BRIEFS

Youth Leadership Henry Graduates its Class of 2017

Sebastian Cowart, 2017; Anthony Johnson, 2016; Don Dunlap; Leigh Shell, 2016; Hunter Gause, 2017

Jackie Jessup It is with heavy hearts that we let you know Chamber member, Jackie Jessup, was tragically killed in an accident, May 3. Jackie was a representative with Comcast Business and was an active member with the Chamber for many years. She served faithfully as an Ambassador and always supported the Chamber through her volunteer efforts. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone she met. She will be sorely missed here at the Chamber and throughout this community. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

The Youth Leadership Henry Board of Directors held their graduation ceremony for their Class of 2017 on the evening of Tuesday May 9, 2017. After a welcome by Chair Don Dunlap, and invocation by board member Priscilla McCammon, the class and their parents enjoyed a dinner catered by Shane’s, in the Locust Grove Event Center venue. The two Class of 2016 “Participatory Excellence” members, Leigh Shell and

Anthony Johnson, returned for this year’s graduation to present this award to the two Class of 2017 recipients of this award - Hunter Gause and Sebastian Cowart. After Miss Gause and Mr. Cowart’s remarks, the class heard from the guest speaker and board Vice-Chair, Earl Parker. Earl’s personal narrative, interwoven with threads of both personal and familial trials and accomplishments, resonated with all of the class in attendance. No one that was there will take relation-

ships for granted - his was a powerful and poignant message that pricked the hearts of the class members and their parents alike. Board members Robert Howell and Priscilla McCammon presented certificates to the graduates of the class. Youth Leadership Henry recognized the 13+ years of service of Sheriff Keith McBrayer on their Board of Directors. Founding YLH board member Susan Howington presented him with a

plaque of appreciation from the board and personally recognized his service to the youth and community. Closing the program, they recognized the sponsors of the program, who help keep it financially attainable for all. The class also encouraged attendees to recommend the Youth Leadership Henry program to rising High School Sophomores - the online application is open at youthleadershiphenry.com.

Leadership Henry participates in COMMUNITY

The Leadership Henry Class of 2016-17 held their last class in April and focused on some of the great non-profit organizations that serve the community. The morning session included representatives from local organizations who serve Henry County. They each shared with the class about the services their group provides and what their current needs are. Following the presentations, the class had an opportunity to visit the organizations’ exhibits set up around the room and network with them.

Next, the class visited A Friend’s House, a home for children in crisis located in McDonough. Nan Jenkins, Director of Development, and Gary Wright (and current Leadership Henry class member), Executive Director, shared about the important needs that A Friend’s House addresses and gave the class a tour of the facility. AT&T sponsored lunch, and Fatimot Ladipo, Regional Director, shared about AT&T’s commitment to the community. After lunch, they boarded the bus and headed to the Henry

County Performing Arts Center for a presentation from the arts community, led by Lynna Schmidt. After hearing about some of the great organizations working to further the arts in Henry County, the class took to the stage for a little improv! The last stop for the afternoon was Southern Belle Farm where the class enjoyed some yummy strawberry ice cream. Then, the class enjoyed a hayride around the farm led by Jake Carter whose family has been farming in Henry County for generations. It was

a sweet finish to a great final day of class. This year’s class is also putting the finishing touches on their Legacy Project, the addition of handicapped accessible restrooms at HOPE Park, a special needs park located at Big Springs Park in McDonough.

Help the Chamber Welcome New Teachers to Henry County The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is proud to support Henry County Schools in its pursuit of educational excellence by sponsoring the 2017 Teacher Induction Program (TIP) luncheon on July 19, 2017. The luncheon is part of a week-long orientation of new teachers to the Henry County School System. The Chamber sponsors this event to welcome the teachers to Henry County, but we need your help to make it a success. You can help by sponsoring the luncheon or donating promotional items. Approximately 450 new teachers will soon be arriving to join the largest employer in Henry County. They not only will provide educational opportunities for our children, but will also have a significant impact on our local economy. We are asking Chamber members to help fund the TIP luncheon and provide items representing their businesses for teacher gift bags. A donation of 450 items will be needed for the gift bags. Below is TIP sponsorship information. All items for the gift bags must be received by 4:00 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2017. Read more for a list of preferred items and instructions for registration. Printed advertisements such as promotional flyers, brochures, etc. will not be accepted unless it contains a coupon for FREE items not requiring additional purchases.
