W.L. “Billy” Carter Public Service Award - Commissioner Bruce Holmes

The Henry County Chamber of Commerce serves as the voice for the business community, provides quality services and programs that meet the needs of its members, improves the economic environment of the community and creates a legacy of leadership for the future.

Photo Credit: Pro Studio #DidYouKnow We offer our Board Room and our smaller conference room, the Toppan Room free to members. They make a great location to meet clients, hold training sessions, conduct interviews or just a meeting space for your business. The Chamber has free wi-fi available as well. Remember our facility is for our members to use.

YOUR BUSINESS IS OUR BUSINESS

Awards were presented at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet & Awards Dinner on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Eagle’s Landing Country Club.

Commissioner Bruce Holmes has long been active in public life, even before taking office, and has been recognized for these activities by being honored in Who’s Who, receiving many prestigious community awards and being identified as a person of influence in Metro Atlanta. However, it is as a County Commissioner that our honoree has made a significant impact on Henry County. By tirelessly working to foster economic development and quality of life,

2016 Taste of Henry

he has clearly made a difference to the community.

Volunteer of the YearGenie Griffin, Zoom 105.9

Talking about the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is almost second nature to Genie Griffin. She has made the Chamber business part of her business by bringing Chamber members into her radio talk show. She has taught sales techniques to the membership drive teams, she has chaired the Chamber Ambassadors Committee. In short, she has become almost a one person welcoming wagon for the Chamber.

Citizen of the YearScott Mahone, Mercer University

A person with a true servant’s heart, Scott Mahone has orchestrated events that ranged from personally providing donated food to the needy on a weekly basis, to managing several hundred volunteers for projects. Whether it is food for the hungry, coats for the cold or construction projects for those in need, no good work is too small or too large for Scott to not only accept, but also to champion with excellence.

Business of the YearMarcia Taylor, Bennett International Group, LLC.

The contributions this company has made to our community are immeasurable. Their charitable foundation

supports so many non-profits in Henry County, often anonymously. They employ hundreds of people at their facility in McDonough and have created a truly unique work environment with their innovative practices including wellness initiatives, “Women in the Drivers Seat” program, and leadership development. Bennett employees can be found lending their talents and expertise in leadership roles throughout our community - from the Chamber to Kiwanis to area non-profits. The meeting was held at Eagles Landing Country Club and was sponsored by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The group enjoyed a social hour of networking with complimentary libations sponsored by Chamber Member, Whaley, Hammonds, Tomasello, P.C. managing partner, Greg Hammonds who also serves on the Board of Directors for the Chamber. The social hour occurred prior to a served meal, followed by a fastpaced program. After the Passing of the gavel, 2016 Chair of the Board Leonard Moreland, President of Heritage Bank, thanked June Wood for her service as chair of the board last year and for her leadership before presenting her with the “Chair” as a gift from the Board. Past, Present and retiring Board Members were also recognized at the banquet. Social hour and musical entertainment was provided by Clayton State University String Quartet & Collegium Vocale. Ronnie Owings of Pro Studio was there to capture some amazing moments at the banquet!

April 15 is not only tax day, it’s taste day! Taste of Henry will be April 15 with more than 30 local restaurants as well as many local tourism attractions on display. Drop your taxes in the mail and celebrate at Taste of Henry: The Best of Taste & Tourism. www.tasteofhenry.com.

stablished in 1873, the City of Hampton offers a small town atmosphere rooted in tradition and history. The city takes pride in being designated as a “Tree City” and a “Bird Sanctuary” city. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the benefits of this close-knit environment with activities such as touring the beautiful antebellum historic homes or strolling down the streets of Hampton which are lined with old oak trees. In recognition of its growing community, the City of Hampton

has become completely devoted to retaining small-town feel while also embracing change. The city’s motto, “Pride and Progress”, demonstrates the statutes of this dedication by detailing an environment where history has a future. Hampton has been rewarded on many occasions for not only the success of this transition, but also the genuine commitment to community and bettering their community. In 2012, the city achieved the status of “Playful

City”- one of 213 communities in the United States to be designated with this honor. In 2013, the city achieved this status once again, making it the only city in Henry County to receive this recognition. With one of the longest standing memberships with the Chamber, the City of Hampton not only supports the Chamber’s mission to make our community the best place to live, work, and play, but also serves as one of the greatest embodiments of our mission in action.

A very important factor in insuring your company’s growth and stability is to make sure it runs efficiently. Documenting operating procedures is a critical first step that will benefit your business no matter how small. Here are a few ways that maintaining updated written procedures can help:

Improved Efficiency

Documenting your process will help everyone in the company understand your service philosophy and company values. It will also clarify each employee’s function, responsibilities and job tasks. Defining the individual roles avoids duplication of efforts, improves safety and leads to increased productivity.

Process Standardization

Having a clear and concise manual allows processes to be standardized and leads to consistent product or service quality. Your employees can easily cross train and move to different functions or business units as well as assist with training new hires.

Creating a procedure manual almost always uncovers unnecessary or inefficient processes and therefore can streamline your business. This often results in being able to focus on neglected or more important tasks and may even produce cost savings. Youth Leadership Henry Healthcare Day for the Class of 2016 The Youth Leadership Henry Class learned a lot about healthcare and several of the different organizations involved in providing it in our community, when they met at Piedmont Henry Hospital on the morning of Saturday January 16. They were welcomed by Frances Marthone, Chief Nursing Officer at Piedmont Henry. Marthone described the history and role of the hospital in the community; and an overview of the variety of nursing roles in the healthcare industry. Piedmont Henry’s HR Director, Jana Warren, led the group through a presentation on the wide variety of careers available for those interested in healthcare. After the initial presentations, the group participated in a fun teambuilding activity, led by Community Relations Director Carmen Hough. They then had an opportunity to learn about the Hands of Hope clinic. Executive Director Mollie Cole described the impact that this free medical clinic has in our community, helping those who need assistance to receive non-emergency care. This helps the Hospital (and taxpayers) by allowing the Emergency Room to be freed up for real emergencies.

Carmen trained the group on the FAST stroke awareness program, and challenged the class members to train their friends, classmates, and family as well. Continuing that message of helping others now, volunteer Thida Phadoungsyavong described the Youth Volunteer Program that the hospital is rolling out this summer, and encouraged those in the class that were interested in the healthcare profession to apply to volunteer this summer. The Youth Leadership Class

was also visited by Laura Turner from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta facility on Hudson Bridge Rd. She shared what they do for young people, and some fascinating facts about sugary drinks and handwashing that were an eye opener to the group. The class was then divided into three groups and toured the hospital, hearing from the individuals that do the work in various departments and the department heads about what they do every day. Upon returning

from the tours, Youth Leadership Henry board member Angel Rollins prepped the class for their leadership role in the upcoming Youth Job Fair (March 14th – save the date!). The Youth Leadership class is also helping advocate for the upcoming E-SPLOST V by educating friends and family about the importance of continuing this one cent sales tax to support capital improvements in the school system. They received materials to aid in that process before being dismissed. Early voting started on February 8th, with the actual vote date being March 1. Piedmont Henry Hospital was an excellent host for the class (as always!). The Youth Leadership Class appreciates them taking their time and energy to host them. The class is also looking forward to their trip to the State Capitol at the end of March, where they will meet the legislative delegation and discuss the issues that are important to the youth in our community with them. Get engaged with the Youth Leadership Henry Program and Class - “like” the Youth Leadership Henry Facebook page and follow on Twitter @YLHenry.

Leadership Henry’s County Government Day The theme of January’s Leadership Henry program was county government. The morning session was held at the Henry County Administration Building where the county Manager welcomed the class and gave an overview of issues facing the county. Blake Prince, District 4 County Commissioner, talked about his role on the board of commissioners and answered questions about his district. Chairman Tommy Smith also visited with the class and provided information about county government. Over the course of the morning, the class heard from several other speakers including: • Cheri Matthews, Assistant County Manager

• Jan Hawkins, Deputy Chief Appraiser • Pam Hart, Deputy Tax Commissioner • Wade Stroud, Interim DOT Director • Ron Burkhalter, SPLOST Capital Projects Director After a morning of presentations, the class headed to the Square for lunch at Kirby G’s before walking to the Judicial Center for the afternoon session. Deputy Bruce Alexander provided a behind-the-scenes tour of how the Sheriff ’s Department keeps our court facilities safe and secure for the over 200,000 people that visited last year. The Sheriff ’s Department was also responsible for transporting 5,005 inmates to the four court facilities in 2015.

Following the tour, Henry County Solicitor General Trea Pipkin provided an overview of the Henry County Judicial Center, and specifically how his courtrooms operate. Over 28,000 cases were heard in the Solicitor General’s four courtrooms last year. The class also spent some time working on their legacy

project, a new addition to the Leadership Henry program this year. Class members will be leading a renovation of the Henry County Fire Safety Theater. Learn more about how you or your business can get involved at www. leadershiphenry.com.

Members and potential members of the Chamber along with friends within the community had the opportunity to network with other guests in attendance while getting to know more about their businesses and the services they offered. Deep South Deli and Pub’s warm and open-air atmosphere overlooking the scenic downtown McDonough Square

welcomed the biggest Business After Hours turnout ever! Although no one won the $150 jackpot, the door prizes for the evening were very rewarding! While mingling and learning, attendees were also able to enjoy delicious hors d’hoeuvres, exceptional local and craft brews, and wine. The calm yet southern and rustic environment along with the genuine dedication to great service made sparking up conversation easy. The night was truly filled with laughter and fun for all in attendance.

MARCH

2016

TOPIC: ONE HENRY ECONOMIC ALLIANCE CREATING AN EPIC HENRY MARCH 17, 2016 • HCCC HUDGINS ROOM • 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Henry County sits in close proximity to some of the key infrastructure components necessary for a thriving economy. Imports and exports for Georgia, at some point, utilize rail, road, air, and water to make their way to their final destination. These routes generally pass directly through Henry County either on their way to Atlanta or on their way to the Port of Savannah. With this in mind, Henry County is poised to become a leader in Metro Atlanta in the coming years as it pertains to being a hub for economic growth. Recognizing this, a diversified group of residents and business community members in the county have banded together to assist Henry County

in promoting a unified effort from within with a coordinated effort to position the county as a key piece to the economic viability of the region. The group’s efforts are now known as One Henry: People, Partnerships, and Economic Prosperity, and anyone and everyone is encouraged to join in the effort. At this luncheon, you will learn about: • The History of One Henry • The subcommittees and their specific focuses • How you can be a part of making a difference for the future of Henry County’s economy

STAR STUDENTS & TEACHERS HONORED AT

THE STAR BREAKFAST

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS Locally, STAR Students and STAR Teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from the more than 165 civic organizations and businesses that serve as local STAR sponsors.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia's highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. This is the 58th year for the STAR program. In order to be selected as the STAR Student for one’s high school, a high school senior must have the highest score on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of the class based on grade point average. Since its creation in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Program has honored nearly 25,000 high school seniors who have in turn chosen their STAR Teachers to share in this recognition. This year’s event took place at Eagle’s Landing Country Club where the 2016 student and teacher honorees, along with their families and school administrators, were treated to breakfast and a program honoring their hard work in school. Sixteen students from public and private schools across Henry County, along with their chosen teachers, were recognized by the Henry County Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee at the annual Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) breakfast on February 23, 2016. The Henry County STAR Students and Teachers are as follows: • Bible Baptist Christian School – Elisee Amemegbaleo (student), Cheryl Drexler (teacher) • Community Christian School – Kennedy VanPelt (student), Beth Mills • Creekside Christian Academy – Derek Cotton (student), Lauren Payne

• Dutchtown High School – Grayson Peterson (student), Victor Perez • Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy – Danny Kim (student), Jennifer Williams (teacher) • Eagle’s Landing High School – Daniella Noronha (student), Judith Lockhart (teacher) • Hampton High School – Deja McCoy (student), Nan Wyatt (teacher) • Henry County High School – Evy Vo (student), Tracy Floyd • Locust Grove High School – Jocelyn Ray (student), Spencer Willis (teacher) • Luella High School – Michaela Garnett (student), Lisa Boyd (teacher) • New Creation Christian Academy – Saraj Ventura (student), Bonnie Gardner (teacher) • Ola High School – William Crawford (student), Christie Schmitt (teacher) • Stockbridge High School – Karen Liaw (student), Dr. Mohan Sadhasivan (teacher) • Strong Rock Christian School – Derek Doolittle (student), Angie Rice (teacher) • Union Grove High School – Chidu Kadiresan (student), Dr. Melissa Davis (teacher) • Woodland High School – Erin Abbott (student), Michael Shook (teacher)

The Star system winner not only won as STAR Student for their school, but for the entire County. Not to mention scoring a perfect score on his SATs. A big congratulations to Danny Kim of Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy on being named the System Winner.

The answer may depend, to some extent, on your stage of life.

of the need to periodically review and rebalance your portfolio. Stocks, and investments containing stocks, often perform well

before a correction. If their price has risen greatly, they may account for a greater percentage of the total value of your portfolio – so much so, in fact, that you might become “overweighted” in stocks, relative to your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. That’s why it’s important for you to proactively rebalance your portfolio – or, during a correction, the market may do it for you. To cite one aspect of rebalancing, if your portfolio ever does become too “stockheavy,” you may need to add some bonds or other fixedrate vehicles. Not only can these investments help keep your portfolio in balance, but they also may hold up better during a correction.

So Much Planning Goes into Retirement. Have You Thought About Taxes As Well? It’s likely that your retirement income may come from many sources, such as Social Security, pension distributions, a 401(k) or IRA withdrawals. That’s why, if taxes are a concern for you, it’s important to choose the right investments for your portfolio. At Edward Jones, we have many options that can give you more control over your taxes, so you can enjoy what you’ve worked so hard to achieve. you retire, you may need to take money from your investment accounts – that is, sell some investments – to help pay for your cost of living. Ideally, however, you don’t want to sell stocks, or stock-based vehicles, during a correction – because when you do, you may be “selling low.” (Remember the most common rule of investing: Buy low and sell high. It’s not always easy to follow, but it’s still pretty good advice.)

And it’s important to maintain a reasonable percentage of stocks, and stock-based vehicles, in your portfolio, even during retirement – because these investments may provide the growth necessary to help keep you ahead of inflation. Consequently, as a retiree, you should have a balance of stocks and stock-based vehicles, along with fixedincome vehicles, such as bonds, certificates of deposit, government securities and so on.

So, to avoid being forced into selling, you need to be prepared. During your retirement years, try to keep at least a year’s worth of cash instruments on hand as well as short-term fixed income Being prepared can help you get investments.
