Tourism Gems Get Spotlighted The Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau (HCCVB), a non-profit organization that operates with the purpose of attracting tourists to Henry County, will soon be launching a new website and History Has a Name storyteller series. In addition to the tourism website, The Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau will also manage the newly re-designed wedding planning resource, Henry County Weddings.com. Ease of use, mobile responsiveness and social media integration are some of the improved features that will accompany the newest incarnation of the HCCVB website. Visitors to the new website will find resources that include attraction listings, itineraries, blogs, an events calendar and more. The website will continue to function as a resource where both travelers and locals can find information related to the many hotels, restaurants, attractions, arts activities and event facilities that Henry County offers. A section of the new website will be devoted to the History Has a Name series, including a detailed Q & A, embedded videos and photos. Viewers are invited to go behind-the-scenes with the individuals featured in each video in order to learn the history of the people as well as the attractions. This is the first phase in what will be an ongoing campaign to spotlight the hidden gems within Henry County’s thriving tourism industry. The History Has a Name series is the result of over a year of interviews, video and photo shoots and careful planning. “With this series I hope we can bring awareness to all Henry County’s tourism offerings,” said HCCVB Director of Tourism, Laura Luker. “Each individual and their story is part of the larger history of Henry County. By combining these existing stories with those to come, we can showcase Henry County as an exciting, interesting and unexpected destination.” The newly designed websites and the History Has a Name series can be viewed in the coming weeks at www.visithenrycountygeorgia.com.

Taste of Henry will be April 21 with more than 30 local restaurants as well as many local tourism attractions on display. Drop your taxes in the mail and celebrate at Taste of Henry: The Best of Taste & Tourism. www.tasteofhenry.com

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

JUNE WOOD

T

here are few places in the world with a climate as wonderful as Henry County, Georgia as spring approaches. While our winters are not terribly harsh (and the current one has been unusually mild), it is still nice to enjoy the buds and blooms on our flowering trees (which help to compensate for the yellow pine pollen on our patios and porches). As the days get longer, there are additional opportunities to visit the many parks and recreational facilities right here in Henry County. Have you visited the Veterans Wall of Honor in Heritage Park, or the park’s Veterans Museum? You will be amazed and inspired by the tribute to Henry County’s Fallen Heroes. Near Hampton, the Nash Farm Museum and battlefield provides information and interpretations regarding earlier conflicts in our nation’s history. In Kellytown,

Rod Meadows Partner at Meadows, Macie & Sutton, P.C 2017 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

the relatively new “Bud” Kelley Park provides an inspiring walk through nature on its paved walking trails. Did you know that, in addition to serving numerous leagues of local teams, the traditional ballfields, soccer fields and courts of the Henry County Park System serves to host an estimated 20,000 young competitive athletes, and tournaments bring approximately $13 million in economic impact to Henry County each year based on the most recent analysis. The partnership between the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau, with our Henry County Parks and Recreation Department is a tremendous asset to our citizens, and all of our visitors. This spring, join the Henry County Chamber of Commerce in saluting the Henry County Parks and Recreation Department.

Change for the Better Judiffier Pearson, Business Consultant The University of Georgia SBDC at Clayton State University Big results in your company can come from small changes accumulated over time. Read that previous statement again. Now how can you LIVE that and make it an “Kaizen” in authentic, sustainable part of your company culture? Small changes can most definitely lead to big results… when done strategically. Kaizen is a Japanese word usually translated as “continual improvement”. It is made up of two words: “kai”, which means change, and “zen”, which means “for the better”. There is a tremendous amount of self-discipline and commitment required for kaizen activity to be transformational in the workplace. Kaizen is a strategy for making continuous improvements in all functions of an organization. It leads to better operational excellence and improved productivity when there is an unwavering commitment to improvement everyday, by everybody, everywhere in the company. Incorporate the three non-negotiables of kaizen (Everyday, Everybody, and Everywhere) to make desired results real: • Everyday must be a challenge to find the better way of doing things. Kaizen is not project-based that starts and ends with a specific initiative. There is no downtime when moving from bad to good, good to great, or great to stellar. It requires a daily effort. • Employees at all levels must be encouraged to come up with ideas and be actively engaged in suggesting and implementing improvements. It should start at the top levels of management and permeate throughout the company down to entry-level and support positions. • Kaizen is not merely a “shopfloor” function or responsibility. It is popular in six sigma circles

for manufacturing, but its adoption and applications must occur everywhere, companywide. From the C-Suite to the frontline. In a nutshell, Kaizen is a Culture of Excellence. Japanese The beauty of it is that it focuses on creative solutions instead of capital expenditures. If you’re ready to commit to such a philosophy and way of being, concentrate on creative investments and small improvements to get immediate results. Focus on improving your process rather than just achieving certain results. Again, do not spend money for kaizen, use your wisdom and creativity. To nurture a Culture of Excellence in your company, organize and implement kaizen events that are focused on improving specific areas of the business. Make these events periodic, but recurring. Here is how you can get started: 1. Identify and plan narrowly scoped events with crossfunctional teams. 2. Set goals and provide any necessary background. 3. Review the current state and develop a plan for improvements. Teams need to go see for themselves to grasp the current situation. 4. Implement improvements. Remember to speak with data, manage by facts. 5. Review and fix what doesn’t work. Take action to contain and correct root causes of problems. 6. Document results and determine any follow-up items. 7. Complete this cycle within a 1-week period, then repeat and continue the journey. For assistance in transforming your organization or team, contact The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at morrow@georgiasbdc.org, or call 678-466-5100.

Opportunity for Hard Working Young People! As you read this, the Youth Leadership Henry class is preparing to host a Job Fair for just young people in our community. Many of our high school and college age youth have a challenging time finding employers who are willing to give them an opportunity; investing considerable time and effort just searching for such an opportunity. This job fair is our class’ way to help the community; by providing a place where employers looking for young people to hire, and young aspiring employees can meet each other. The job fair will take place from 10AM to 2PM in the Commons Area of Henry County High School on Monday, March 13. Henry Schools are out that day for a Professional Development day, so students will be able to also meet those employers whose business hours HR staff

CAREER FAIR

wouldn’t normally be available for them. If you know a young person (age 16-24 is our target) looking for after school, summer, or fulltime employment, this is an event they won’t want to miss. We encourage attendees to be prepared to fill out applications, have multiple copies of résumés and references, and be prepared to make a good impression. There is no cost to participate (but a big cost of not participating!) For more information or answers to specific questions, we can be reached at youthleadership@leadershiphenry.com.

The 3rd Annual Youth Leadership Henry Career Fair provides you with an opportunity to participate in on-site interviews, workshops, and get information about jobs, internships, and career tracks in various industries and/or businesses. This is an excellent opportunity to meet face to face with the area’s employers who are looking for youth who are ready to work and intern. This event is sponsored by Youth Leadership Henry and The Henry County Chamber of Commerce. Our goal is to prepare you for a career opportunity and we would like to provide you with what to expect from the job fair. To ensure that you are prepared for the event, below is a list of things to know:  Bring 25-30 copies of your resume. Resumes should not be folded!  Bring a copy of three references and a pen. Some employers may ask you to complete

an application, and most applications ask you to write references on the sheet.

 References should include three people who can speak well of you professionally. This

could include an advisor, teacher, supervisor, etc. This does not include a family member or friend.

 Dress professionally. Please try to wear a suit. If you do not have a suit it is

recommended you wear a dress shirt, blouse, dress and slacks. Also, please wear dress shoes. Gentlemen, try your best to wear a tie.

 Remember to turn your cell phone off or keep on vibrate.  We highly recommended that you leave your I-Pod and MP3 Players at home.  Do not enter the building with headphones on; they can be a huge distraction.  Arriving at 1:45 p.m. will not guarantee you a conversation with an employer or even

allow enough time for a potential interview.

Youth Leadership Henry, a countywide leadership program for high school sophomores, is designed to develop leadership potential and to acquaint participants with community needs, problems and resources through interaction with local leaders and decision makers.

Leadership Henry learns about County Government during January class January was all about county government as the Leadership Henry class visited with leadership from a variety of county departments. The morning session was held at the Henry County Administration Building where Interim County Manager – and current Leadership Henry class member – Cheri Matthews welcomed the class and gave an overview of Henry County. June Wood, Henry County Commission Chair, spoke next and shared with the class the issues she and the other commissioners are facing, followed by a question and answer session. Following Chairwoman Wood’s presentation, Commissioner Dee Clemmons talked about her role as District 2 Commissioner and what is happening in her district. Over the course of the morning, the class heard from several other speakers including:

• Daunte Gibbs, Planning and Zoning Director • John Selfe, Chief Appraiser • Jan Hawkins, Deputy Chief Appraiser • David Curry, Tax Commissioner • Pam Hart, Deputy Tax Commissioner • Wade Stroud, DOT and Stormwater Director • Ron Burkhalter, SPLOST Capital Projects Director • Roque Romero-Muniz, SPLOST Roads Director After a morning of presentations, the class enjoyed lunch provided by 15th Street Pizza and concluded their Energy Bus leadership development curriculum. Next, Leadership Henry moved to the Henry County Judicial Center for the afternoon session. Henry County Solicitor General Trea Pipkin provided an overview of the Henry

County Judicial Center, and specifically how his courtrooms operate. They also learned how the Sheriff ’s Department keeps our court facilities safe and secure for the over 200,000 people that visited last year. The class also spent some

time working on their legacy project, the capstone assignment they must complete as a class prior to graduation. In February, the class will visit the Capitol and other government offices as they learn about our state government.

The Henry County Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee recognized 16 students and their chosen teachers at the annual Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) breakfast. The students and their teachers were notified recently of this grand academic achievement. The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Department of Education sponsor the STAR program each year, but each local chamber of commerce takes on the local recognition ceremony with sponsorship support from various businesses in the community. This year’s event took place at Eagle’s Landing Country Club at 8 a.m. on Thursday, February 16. The 2017 student and teacher honorees, along with their families and school administrators, were treated to breakfast and a program honoring their hard work in school. In order to be selected as the STAR Student for one’s high school, a high school senior must have the highest score on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of the class based on grade point average. Each STAR Student also gets the opportunity to select a STAR Teacher to be honored

alongside the student at the recognition event. This teacher is usually the one who has had the most influence on the student’s academics in a school setting. Students and teachers honored at the school level then have the chance to compete for the overall county STAR title. If one earns the county-level title, that student and teacher then move forward to one of eight regional competitions and then possibly the state competition. This is the 59th year for the STAR program. Since the beginning, the STAR program has recognized more than 24,000 students and their teachers from around the state. The Henry County STAR Students and Teachers are as follows: • Bible Baptist Christian School – Kenzie Wright (student), Diane Pittman (teacher) • Community Christian School – Brittany Adams (student), Barbara Thuman (teacher) • Creekside Christian Academy – Kamryn Cannon (student), Lauren Payne (teacher) • Dutchtown High School – Anna Nguyen (student), Rajeswari Narasimhan (teacher) • Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy – Ali Austin (student), Shelley

016 Citizen of the Year – Don 2 Dunlap, Youth Leadership Henry

Don Dunlap has, in many ways, brought civic involvement into the digital age. An educator at heart, our honoree has taken students into the world to educate and challenge them. At his core, he wishes to instill in our young future leaders, the core values needed to succeed. He does this by challenging them with new ideas in the classroom and by taking them into the world to learn about their community. A classroom door is not a barrier to learning for those who fall under his instruction, nor does he consider graduation to be an end for learning.

The meeting was held at Eagles Landing Country Club, 100 Eagles Landing Way, Stockbridge, GA 30281 and was sponsored by The Billy Carter Public Service Award – Representative Andy Welch Piedmont Henry Hospital. The group enjoyed a social hour of networking with complimentary libations sponsored by Chamber Members SERVPRO of Henry and Spalding Counties & Whaley, Hammonds, Tomasello, P.C. whose representatives also serve on the Board of Directors for the Chamber. The social hour occurred prior to a served meal, followed by a fast-paced program.

Andy Welch has been an outstanding member of the community, providing his talents and expertise to the Henry County Chamber of Commerce where he lead the Transportation Committee and advocated for improvements in transportation funding. He served as Chairman of the Board of the Chamber as well.
