Leadership Henry accepting applications for Class of 2017-2018 Leadership Henry, a program of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, is now accepting applications for the upcoming class year. The program is one of more than 1,000 leadership development programs throughout the United States that works to prepare, involve and sustain leaders to address community challenges and improve the quality of life.

The 10-month program is dedicated to providing participants with an understanding of our county’s history, diversity, justice system, politics, government, economy, education, human services, and healthcare. Leadership Henry class members attend an overnight retreat followed by monthly programs focusing on various aspects of the community.

Participants are also involved in addressing the needs of our community through a legacy project of their choosing and a commitment to continuing to serve the community following graduation.

Youth Leadership Henry accepting applications for Class of 2017-2018 The Youth Leadership board is accepting applications for next year’s class. Rising sophomores should visit the Youth Leadership website (youthleadershiphenry.com), or their Facebook page to get the link for the online application, and/ or learn more about the program. There are even tips for filling out the application and a .pdf of the application questions so applicants can review them before they start the online application. It is very competitive being that there can be 150 applicants for the approximately 40 openings. If you or anyone you know has questions about the program, email youthleadership@leadershiphenry.com.

The Henry County Convention & Visitors Bureau is located inside the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and employs the portion of the hotel/ motel tax collected by the cities of Hampton, Locust Grove, Stockbridge and unincorporated Henry County that is restricted to promotion of tourism.

While the CVB is located within the Chamber, it is governed by an independent board of directors composed of members of the tourism industry and a representative from each of the municipalities and the county.

All funds and financial reports are also separate.

The CVB’s role is to enhance Henry County’s economic climate by attracting tourists to local attractions, restaurants, hotels, events and event facilities. According to the most recent study ordered by the Georgia Department of Economic Development, in 2015 visitors to Henry County spent $253 million dollars and contributed $7.29 million in local sales tax giving each Henry County household a tax savings of $256.

The CVB promotes Henry County in a variety of ways.

This includes billboards, a newly redesigned website, a Visitors Guide, social media, blogs, print ads, and

with a campaign called “History Has a Name” to tell Henry County’s unique tourism story.

Key markets for Henry County are youth sports tournaments, which bring in approximately $14 million in economic impact, family travel, and the wedding industry.

While the wedding industry may feel like an unlikely market, the average cost of a wedding in 2016 was over $30,000. With more than 25 venues in Henry County, brides have many choices and when they select a local venue, local vendors and local hotels are also used.

Generating hotel stays is the main goal of the CVB’s marketing. More hotel stays means more nonresident derived funding for local government services, more funding for tourism promotion and overnight guests spend more money in the community on food, transportation, fuel and in retail establishments.

Before assuming the role of Director of Tourism in 2008, Laura worked as the marketing manager for an environmental consulting company.

Aisha White is a graduate of Clayton State University.

Prior to joining the CVB as the Digital Marketing Assistant in 2016, Aisha held copywriting positions at digital marketing agencies.

Community Support The CVB works with local tourism businesses to not just promote their businesses, but to help connect them with new opportunities.

The CVB partners with A Friend’s House on their annual Taste of Henry.

Aisha also serves on the One Henry Arts & Leisure Committee.

Chamber Involvement The CVB’s relationship with the Chamber is significant because being a Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) requires a 501(c)6 status. Being affiliated with the Chamber, who is a 501(c)6 allows us to operate as a DMO.

Recognition In 2015, The Henry County Convention & Visitors Bureau was a recipient of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Shining Example Award for the Best Marketing Campaign for the CVB’s Treasure App.

How Do You Measure Success?

by Alisa Kirk It’s common for businesses to do strategic planning in the Fall and set goals for the common year. By April, one of two things usually happens: either the plans and goals are still in place and perhaps even tweaked as circumstances dictate, or the plans and goals are in a drawer somewhere because life happened and everyone got busy putting out fires. Which of these things is true for your business?

The hardest part of a plan is implementing it, and even when you try to implement the plan, it’s hard to show incremental progress. Every plan should come with metrics that show the progress and success of each strategy. How do you set these metrics?

The first step is having a data collection system in place. You’ll need data on financial sources, marketing efforts, customer service, and internal processes (like production and time spent doing a job). If you consider that each strategy in a plan needs metrics attached, establishing a system to collect for these metrics is the logical next step.

For financial sources, who collects your financial data? Who pays your bills, balances your checkbook, creates

your invoices? Make sure that all of the financial data is correctly kept in a system such as QuickBooks. If someone offsite, like your CPA, maintains the system, ask for financial reports that give you the data you need. Are you measuring sales, profit margins, labor costs, or collections? Ask for timely reports that help you monitor progress in these areas. If you don’t know how to read financial statements, ask your CPA or consultant to teach you.

Other things like marketing efforts and internal processes will require that you set up the collection system. If you are going to advertise someone, train your staff to ask each caller and contact how they heard about you. Write it down. Compile the answers. For internal processes, you may need to ask technicians and others to keep track of hours spent doing a task or how many items are produced in a time period.

The important thing about establishing these systems is to make sure that what you are measuring will be an indication of the progress and success of a strategy in your action plan. If you need help with matching these metrics to the strategies, there are a lot of sources out there, like the SBDC, who would be glad to help.

Leadership Henry class learns about Economic Development and Tourism in Henry County

Newton County Schools’ Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey and Eastside High principal Jeff Cher attended the Henry County Schools’ Board of Education meeting to present Jo Vaal Hollingshed, a senior at Henry County High School, with a Coin of Distinction award for his extraordinary display of character and compassion for a member of a competing team.

Union Grove High School Senior Accepted to West Point, Earns STAR Recognition.

Henry County commissioners have named Cheri HobsonMatthews to the position of County Manager.

Marcia Taylor was announced as being a 2017 Horatio Alger Award recipient, a very prestigious award, and inducted into the Horatio Alger Society.

Henry County Schools Superintendent, Rodney Bowler, received a prestigious award recently during the Georgia School Superintendents Association’s (GSSA) Spring Bootstrap Conference in Savannah.

These awards are given to superintendents for outstanding leadership in their school systems and communities.

The March session of Leadership Henry was packed with great information and interesting discussion about economic development opportunities and the impact of tourism on our community.

The morning session was led by Charlie Moseley and Leah Brown of the Henry County Development Authority. Charlie shared about some of the current projects of the Development Authority and discussed the successes and

challenges of economic development in Henry County.

Class members learned about the process of attracting different types of businesses to the community and factors that businesses consider when choosing where to locate their facilities.

Mill Graves, Retail and Commercial Development Associate with Electric Cities of Georgia, and Walt Farrell, Statewide Project Manager with Georgia Power Commu-

nity and Economic Development, followed the Development Authority’s presentation and provided some great information about growth and trends statewide. They provided additional insight into how our state and cities work to attract businesses and jobs to our community.

One of the highlights of Leadership Henry’s Economic Development Day is always the facility tour, and this year was no exception. This year, the class visited one of their own member’s workplace!

Linda Hensel, LH Class of 2017, and her team at PVH provided an insightful and interesting behind-the-scenes look at their facility. The company distributes well-known brands such as Calvin Klein, Van Heusen, Izod and Warner’s from their McDonough center.

The class traveled back to the Chamber of Commerce for the remainder of the class day which included presentations by leaders from the One Henry initiative. David Gill, President of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, and Aisha White of the Henry County Convention and Visi-

tors Bureau also shared about the economic impact of tourism in the community and how the Henry County CVB works to attract the film industry, sports tournaments and other groups.

Thank you to Charlie Moseley and the Henry County Development Authority for helping to coordinate this information-rich day. The class and speakers also enjoyed an Italian lunch from Farmhouse Catering sponsored by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Laura Turner, CHOA Community Development Officer and Leadership Henry board member, visited the class at lunch and shared about some of the pediatric healthcare system’s initiatives in the community.

Looking forward, looking back It has been an exciting and informational year for the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2017. They have been learning about the people and organizations in our community that make Henry County a great place to live. Class members have been exposed to public safety, education, healthcare, state government, and county history; broadening and deepening their knowledge about our com-

munity and how they can make it a better place.

Past classes have really enjoyed their capstone community service project, allowing them to put what they’ve learned in the program into action. In addition to being offered the opportunity to participate as a group in the non-profit events with Speedway Children’s Charities and the Atlanta Burger Wars, this year’s class put on a

youth-only career fair as their legacy project. It was exciting to see class members using their leadership skills to help other young people in their community. It really exemplified the servant leadership that the program is intended to develop in class members.

The class is looking forward to their graduation from the program on the evening of May 9th. They will join the ranks of alumni who, for the

last 21 years, have been using the knowledge they gained from the program to be citizens who contribute and add value to their community. Be sure to read Henrycounty. com next month so you can see pictures of their graduation ceremony.

2017 Henry County Chamber Golf Classic The 17th annual Henry County Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic will be held on Monday, September 25th at Eagle’s Brooke Golf & Country Club.

Help the Chamber Welcome New Teachers to Henry County The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is proud to support Henry County Schools in its pursuit of educational excellence by sponsoring the 2017 Teacher Induction Program (TIP) luncheon on July 19, 2017. The luncheon is part of a week-long orientation of new teachers to the Henry County School System. The Chamber sponsors this event to welcome the teachers to Henry County, but we need your help to make it a success. You can help by sponsoring the luncheon or donating promotional items.

Approximately 450 new teachers will soon be arriving to join the largest employer in Henry County. They not only will provide educational opportunities for our children, but will also have a significant impact on our local economy.

We are asking Chamber members to help fund the TIP luncheon and provide items representing their businesses for teacher gift bags. A donation of 450 items will be needed for the gift bags. Below is TIP sponsorship information. All items for the gift bags must be received by 4:00 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2017.
