ovember is a time for reflection and Thanksgiving. When you read this, the greatest country in

the history of the world will be in the middle of a peaceful transfer of power. That is an occurrence that most in this world never experience and yet our country does it almost flawlessly. The same can be said for our local and state governments. This is truly something that we all can be thankful for. Closer to home the Henry County Chamber just concluded another very successful Intergovernmental Retreat.

What’s the biggest problem with business plans? Implementing them! Organizations large and small worry about creating a dynamic plan for the coming year, but creating the plans is less than half the battle. Creating a plan without bitesized steps for implementation is a recipe for failure. How do you create (or re-create) a strategy for 2017 that is workable? Start now, and here are some steps: 1) Make sure your vision is defined and useable. I see a lot of beautifully written visions for organizations that simply aren’t workable because they don’t give the business anything to aim for. A vision is like a long-term goal in that it has to be something that you can shoot for, but unlike a goal, a vision will never fully be achieved (it never ends). An example is Habitat for Humanity’s vision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live. All of the strategy and ideas for growth in that organization keep in mind that the overall vision is that everyone will have a decent place to live. 2) With the vision in mind, set goals for 2017 year that fit in with the longterm goals. The recipe for a goal is: To achieve X by Y (time frame). These goals must be hard but doable, and will help you get closer to accomplishing your vision.

3) Assess where you stand right now. What do you have going for you, and what may keep you from reaching your goals? If you’re familiar with SWOT analysis, this would involve looking at your strengths and weaknesses as they pertain to your goal. Look at the successes and failures of the past year: how can you harness the lessons you learned there and build on them? 4) Look at your competition and other outside factors. What has changed, and what issues do you need to address? What trends do you see that may affect your goal, and what opportunities exist that you didn’t consider before? 5) For the top three to five strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures, and outside factors, brainstorm strategies that will help you achieve your goals. Prioritize these strategies, and for each, assign timelines, personnel, resources, and bite-sized steps. 6) On a periodic (weekly) basis, have a VERY short meeting to report where you stand on the steps. Stay accountable by not forgetting the assignments. If something is not working, reassess immediately and change the plan to match. Plans only collect dust when you put them on the shelf.

Chamber Briefs Learn about the great things that are happening in our community…

Leadership Henry Tours County during September Class The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize Amanda Ori with Liberty Plumbing as its Ambassador of the Month for September 2016. Our Chamber Ambassadors welcome new Chamber Partners and help them become involved and engaged. Ambassadors are the face of the Chamber and promote Chamber and community! Thank you for all you do!

Congrats to Chamber member Kevin Callison, FIC, CFFM, Modern Woodmen of America on winning the $250 Chamber Jackpot Drawing at the September Business After Hours hosted by The Courtyard Atlanta McDonough!

Dana Flowers, EIP Math teacher at Timber Ridge Elementary School, was named Teacher of the Year for Henry County Schools. The announcement was made during the Harvest of Heroes ceremony Thursday, October 13 at the Performing Arts Center. Also recognized at the evening’s ceremony were the HERO Award winners. • Jeffrey St. Aime, Technology (Service Employee) • Margie Gibson, Bus Driver (Transportation Employee) • Machelle Latham, Bus Driver (Transportation Employee) • Laurie Gable, Eagle’s Landing High School (Support Personnel) • Renee Wolfinger, Timber Ridge Elementary (Media Specialist) • Jeff Rader, Luella Schools Cluster (Student Services Personnel)

Heritage Bank is excited to announce that Clark Ninneman has joined their team as a Business Banker/ Commercial Lender Vice President.

September’s program day for Leadership Henry focused on the history of Henry County and some of the places and people that make our County unique. The moving history lesson took the class to all four Henry County cities, learning about the history of the “mother of all counties” from historian Gene Morris. After their morning on the bus, the Georgia Power Customer Care Center hosted the class for lunch provided by Gezzo’s, sponsored by class member Jason Robinson of BB&T. The next stop during County Day took the class to Atlanta Motor Speedway, one of the most famous tracks in all of American motorsports. The 900 acre facility has been the site of some of NASCAR’s most memorable moments and hosts numerous sporting and entertainment events throughout the year. The class got a behind the scenes tour of AMS and even spent a few moments on the track!

Next, the class took a short drive across the highway to the Federal Aviation Administration’s Air Route Traffic Control Center in Hampton. An average of 7,000 planes are in the sky at any given moment, and the center provides safe, secure, and efficient management of airspace for the eastern region. Leadership Henry toured the facility and learned the huge role the Center plays in ensuring safety and efficiency for air travel. Aviation continued to be the theme as the next stop for the Leadership Henry bus was the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation and Flying Museum, also located in Hampton. The non-profit Foundation and Museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Army Aviation through aerial demonstrations, displays and educational programs. Veterans led the class on a tour of the museum, located at the Atlanta South Regional Airport, and shared important moments, equipment and people in aviation history. The facility also offers rides in some of the historic helicopters, but unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough time left in the class’ day for that! County Day is always an actionpacked day, but an important one in learning about some of the people and places that make up our County. To

quote one of Leadership Henry’s class members, “Awesome day. I’ve lived in McDonough for 10 years, and had no idea the Heritage Museum existed. The county historian was a wealth of knowledge, and I learned so much about Henry Co FAA . It was

Youth Leadership Henry class of 2017 Teambuilding Day Youth Leadership Henry’s first outing as a class was Monday, October 10. This was a Professional Development day for Henry County Schools, so while most of the students were out of school, the Youth Leadership Henry class was working together at their Team Building Day! The class met at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce in the Hudgins Room and had a review session about their individual assessments for Strengths-Based Leadership, and discussed how they would be able to use the results both in the class and as they develop their own leadership styles going forward.

The class then boarded the bus and went to the Fortson 4-H Center in Hampton. At the center, participants did a variety of team building activities centered on developing the cohesiveness of the group through communication and cooperation. Starting with ground activities, they progressed to low rope and ultimately rock wall and zip line. The support that class members showed each other, their resourcefulness at overcoming obstacles and thinking outside the box were amazing. This will be a great class of Henry County aspiring leaders. Keep an eye on them this year!

amazing! This trip should be a must for all HC students.” October’s program focuses on Public Safety, and Henry County Government hosted the class for a day of learning, demonstrations and facility tours.

Looking for new ways of sharing your company’s story and products? “Show and Tell” was one of the earliest games you played in kindergarten. You loved it so much you still remember it half a lifetime later. Your teacher had you play it so you could learn how to share with others, and how to speak in public, essential skills that still serve you today. If you’re a self-employed entrepreneur, it’s your task to work with others. The act of telling them about your craft is what we call sales. When you played “Show and Tell” in kindergarten, you inspired many people to want what you had. Come out to our “Show and Tell BBL” and bring out your inner child in your business and enthusiastically sell what you love to do. ABOUT THE SPONSOR Located on 887 acres in Hampton, Ga., just 25 miles south of Atlanta, Atlanta Motor Speedway is one of the country’s top sports, corporate, family and entertainment facilities. Since holding its first race in 1960, Atlanta Motor Speedway has become a premiere facility for multiple forms of racing in addition to a wide range of other events which have included concerts, family gatherings, business conventions and the Georgia State Fair.

This year, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and its partners incorporated their annual Intergovernmental Retreat with an event jointly sponsored by the Regional Business Coalition and the Atlanta Regional Commission held on Monday, October 10th, 2016. The On Board Atlanta regional conversation was an opportunity to participate with a large group of Metropolitan Atlanta leaders and hear from other Metropolitan areas how they have creatively

and successfully found solutions to problems common to many of us. The discussion groups were facilitated by wellknown public figures, such as John Schuerholz of the Braves, Attorney General Sam Olens and Commissioner Gretchen Corbin of the Technical College System of Georgia. A follow up session was held the following day at the Chamber of Commerce in the form of a facilitated discussion as to how Henry County can consider implementation of some of the best

practices heard from other community leaders and how they can be used to improve both Henry County and to assist in establishing the plan of work for the Chamber for 2017. This year’s retreat

was made possible by its sponsors which included Henry County Development Authority, Georgia Power, Central Georgia EMC, Snapping Shoals EMC, Heritage Bank, Comcast Business and AT&T.
