This month’s newsletter is dedicated to personally thanking our members for their continued support of the community and the Chamber’s commitment to enhancing the county’s quality of life. We want to take this opportunity to thank some of those who have risen up this year in direct involvement in Chamber events and activities and help make everything the Chamber does a success. This is by no means a complete list of those who have helped in so many ways.

#DidYouKnow As a new member of the chamber of commerce, you will be listed in the chamber newsletter, e-newsletter, on Facebook and have the opportunity to be highlighted in the “New Members” feed on the Chamber Website for 90 days.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

JUNE WOOD

Leonard Moreland President and CEO at Heritage Bank 2016 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

What does being a member of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce mean to me?

O

ctober is my favorite month of the year. As summer heat and humidity gives way to crisp mornings and bright sunshiny afternoons, outdoor activities are so much more enjoyable. Whether it is a round of golf with friends or just enjoying conversation with neighbors, the beginning of fall is a great time of year. October is also the month we celebrate our members at the Chamber. Henry County is fortunate to have a vibrant business environment. We have great places to shop and to enjoy dinner out along with many businesses that provide outstanding employment opportunities to our citizens. The Henry County Chamber has seen a 13% growth in membership over the past two years. While this is a positive sign of economic activity and recovery in our community, it is also a sign that local businesses see value in a chamber membership. Once a business joins the chamber they stay with the chamber in overwhelming percentages.

So what does a chamber membership mean to me? More importantly, what does a chamber membership mean to you? Yes, I will of course cover the obvious. Monthly luncheons that provide great educational opportunities and business after hours that provide a relaxed social atmosphere to network and promote your business. I can’t leave out access to a membership that is made up of the top 800 businesses in the community and a website full of marketing opportunities. Let’s be honest the “decal” is huge. It adds credibility to my business and shows community support. The chamber does so many great things in the community that it is also a great opportunity to ride the chamber’s coattails. Yes, some members just send in their annual dues and get a good feeling knowing they are supporting an organization that looks out for them every day and promotes commerce within our community. But to me it is about the relationships and friendships I have

formed with folks I might have never met otherwise. These are folks that share the same vision for a better Henry County and don’t mind offering their time and talents in helping us achieve it. A lot can be said about exchanging business cards or advertising on a website, but getting to know people on a personal level and having them take an interest in your business is priceless. These are folks that you can bounce an idea off of or just ask for a referral and they are excited to help. You see membership in the Henry County Chamber is not becoming part of an exclusive club; it is becoming part of an inclusive organization that exists to help your business succeed. So, as we enter this month of membership appreciation, let me be the first to thank all of the members for everything you do to help Heritage Bank and myself, Leonard Moreland, in this community and I hope you feel the same way about your relationship with me.

HEALTH Micro-management can be the death of teams, initiatives, organizations and long-awaited impact. It is defined as a management style that closely observes or controls the work of subordinates or employees. In fact, the exertion of excessive control is one of the hallmarks of positional leadership- the lowest level of leadership. Here are four unwanted outcomes that micromanagement breeds: 1. Transactions, not transformation. When there is a constant check-in on numbers, stats, and quantitative metrics of any kind, what you end up doing is establishing a culture of transactions instead of transformation achieved by creating value through relationships. In a transactional culture, you will quickly find that numbers matter, not people. That’s a slippery slope to cold, impersonal and unethical behavior. 2. Demoralization instead of inspiration. Great leaders learn what motivates their people. They lead by inspiring vision, encouraging participation, and giving people what they need to excel. Many managers mistake criticism for coaching. Pointing out shortfalls; constantly warning of impending failure if “abc” isn’t done; and accentuating the negative is not coaching. That’s disheartening and demoralizing.

3. Resentment, then rebellion. Trust is a key element in high performance teams. Smart, capable people want to be left alone to do their jobs. However, micromanagers don’t trust their people to get the job done per their standards and timeframes. Excessive attention from management can become annoying and ultimately undermine the performance they’re trying to drive. When a work environment starts to feel stifling or oppressive, rebellion and underperformance soon follow. 4. Loss of great employees. To put it simply, people hate to be micromanaged. More often than not, highly skilled and valuable employees quit when they repeatedly find themselves under the thumb of a relentless micro-manager. They know that their skill sets are currency in the marketplace, so unnecessary, intense scrutiny of their work only pushes them out the door faster. Takeaway: Hovering is not the key to high performance. If you’ve provided direction through vision and hired the right people for the job (skilled and passionate about their work) then let them do what they do. You’d be surprised at what confidence in your people can generate. For assistance in developing a high performance team, contact The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at morrow@georgiasbdc.org, or call 678466- 5100.

Pin Strikes Entertainment Center, did a wonderful job hosting the August Business After Hours. They offer a full restaurant with quality and variety and they had a delicious spread of food that are all available on their restaurant menu. Attendees mixed and mingled and some enjoyed the opportunity to bowl to their hearts content among the eight lanes resrved for

Chamber members! Their staff graciously explained their services and answered questions about their products. Several Chamber members won great door prizes and three unfortunate members were not present to hear their name called for the $200 Chamber jackpot.
