O

ne of David Gill’s favorite sayings about the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is “We have a staff of five, but a workforce of hundreds.” He is right. It is absolutely amazing what David is able to accomplish with the help of the amazing talents of Office Manager Phyllis Reeves; Director of Communications Lydia Pierre (who makes sure that this newsletter is prepared every month – among many other duties); Director of Membership Gary Sparrow; Director of Tourism Laura Luker; and Digital Marketing Assistant Aisha White.

But as the Chamber website says, the Chamber is “more than a membership, it’s a partnership.”

It is through the efforts, cooperation and contribution of our 700 plus business members that allow the Chamber to fulfill its mission – “dedicated to improving the business climate and making our community the best place to live, work and play.” Working closely with the Henry County Development Authority and every governmental entity in the county (who each

have a representative on the Chamber’s Board of Directors) the Chamber’s primary goal is to enhance economic development – for all of our existing businesses and citizens – as well as attracting new ones. However, economic development involves all aspects of community – particularly health and safety, education, and quality of life.

The Chamber has committees, task forces and initiatives in each of these areas.

Yule Forest: The Pumpkin Patch and Fear the Woods Allen and Susie Grant - Owners About Yule Forest: The Pumpkin Patch and Fear the Woods When Allen and Susie married back in 1988, they had a vision. They wanted to create an educational agritourism farm that allowed families to come out and cut down their own Christmas tree. Little did they know that their vision would expand to the Pumpkin Patch, landscaping business, and the surprising haunted attraction, Fear the Woods. Since opening their business 33 years ago, they have seen Henry County grow to become one of the most popular counties in Georgia. However, even though times have changed, they still strive to keep their family as the business foundation.

Their three children, Georgene, Allen, and Arrah, have all lived and worked at the farm since they had the ability to pick up a tool to work. They loved feeding the animals, working with school tours, painting, and building the farm alongside their parents.

All three are grown up now, but sometimes you can see them, their spouses, and even their children out there, continuing their family legacy. Now children of all ages can come out to the Pumpkin Patch to play on the inflatables, ride a hayride, pet real farm animals, laugh at a puppet show, watch bees make honey, learn what it takes to be a farmer, and pick a pumpkin out of the patch with their family. During October thousands of children come out with their schools for the morning tours at the farm and all of the children leave the farm with smiles on their faces and knowledge of the life of a farmer. Susie Grant’s Masters in education guides her ideas when it comes to letting people learn about farming. She knows that children learn best through their hands so she asked her husband, Allen, to create a farm that lets children learn through curiosity and play.

Community Support Yule Forest is a family oriented farm that prides itself on treating employees like family. It is not unusual to find siblings, parents, or cousins working or visiting the farm. Once you are a part of the Yule Forest family, you are always welcome. Guest often return year after year as a family tradition.

Most recently, Yule Forest has reached out to the community through the nearest elementary school, Pleasant Grove.

The farm has a STEM garden that is a part of Pleasant Grove’s STEM curriculum.

Students visit the farm to problem solve and help with the garden. They even harvest and eat their crops! This is the perfect time to empower children to learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a farming environment. In November and December, Yule Forest collects toys for Toys for Tots and donates trees for Trees for Troops. As of last year, Yule Forest has donated over 300 trees for our country’s troops. Every year, Yule Forest collects and donates money to various charities including St. Jude’s Hospital and Relay for Life. The farm also participates in the Annual Geranium Festival and is a sponsor for Henry County Schools T.I.P. program.

Chamber Involvement The Chamber has been an amazing supporter of our business. They have helped with advertising, marketing, and making us feel like we are a valued part of the Henry County community.

Leadership Henry Class of 2018 holds annual class retreat The new class of Leadership Henry attended the annual class retreat at Camp Twin Lakes in September. The retreat officially kicks off the program year and is a favorite event for class participants.

The twenty-nine class members arrived at Camp Twin Lakes on Thursday morning and spent the first part of the day learning about their individual Emergenetics profiles, a framework of seven recognizable and useful factors that apply to work, communication, and interpersonal relationships. Facilitators from the UGA J. W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development led the group in a series of activities to help them understand their own profiles and how to work with others whose preferences may

differ from theirs.

The class had the opportunity to tour Camp Twin Lakes with camp staff and learned how the facility offers programs and camps for children with illnesses, disabilities and other challenges.

Board member, Pam Milling, shared her family’s experiences at the camp, and the class took part in the Slide Challenge benefitting CURE Childhood Cancer. After din-

ner, class members showed their competitive side with some intense team games including marshmallow spitting and Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Friday morning began with Leadership Henry board members leading the class in a discussion on their Energy Bus reading, the leadership development curriculum being utilized this year followed by team building activities in

the gym led by the Camp Twin Lakes staff. Participants learned about working together as a team and developing a plan. Afterward, they headed into the woods for the challenge course and the infamous twenty foot “Terry’s Wall.”

It was a memorable retreat and formed a strong framework for the upcoming year. Class members learned a lot about themselves, but also about the new relationships formed with the other participants. Thank you to the Leadership Henry board for planning and facilitating another amazing retreat.

Youth Leadership Henry announces its class of 2018 The Youth Leadership Henry Board of Directors is pleased to announce the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2018. This group of 45 participants has been chosen from 120 applications from High School sophomores from 15 schools who live all around Henry County.

The Selections Committee evaluates applications for completeness, goals, accomplishments, recognition, and overall suitability for the goal of the program; development of a cadre of servant leaders that will help make Henry a better place to live, work, and play.

Youth Leadership Henry develops the class through days focused on teambuilding, public safety, education, healthcare, state government, county history and then do a service project to give back to our community. The program details can be found on our website at youthleadershiphenry.com. Youth Leadership Henry is pleased to be able to add a workplace ethics component to this year’s program, helping class members develop and hone those 21st-Century skills that employers and college recruiters have identified as a critical need.

Speaker Dr. Rob McCleland Dr. Rob McCleland has a PhD in Organizational Leadership. He been part of the John C. Maxwell world for 10 years, including serving as an international partner, Associate Trainer, and eventually as Executive Director of EQUIP Leadership, the largest leadership development organization in the world. After that he became the founding President of the John Maxwell Leadership Foundation. Most recently, Rob has launched LeaderTribe.com, an online platform and future podcast to serve growing leaders around the globe. His groundbreaking Ph.D. dissertation explored the field of Executive Coaching, and he enjoys teaching in university MBA and Organizational Leadership programs.

Through all of his endeavors, Rob’s two passions have remained the same: • Helping leaders to build phenomenally effective trust-based teams • Creating a culture of empowerment for leaders to thrive.

Those in attendance for the August Business Boosters Luncheon enjoyed a delicious lunch catered by Graffiti’s Pizza - A Greek Taverna while they learned about the Cyber Technology and Information Security Laboratory (CTISL), which is one of eight labs in the Georgia Tech Research Institute. The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) created it to apply GTRI’s broad expertise and systems engineering

experience in cyber-related research to a broad range of information security issues. The Speaker was Blake Penn, Information Security Standard and Compliance Manager.

The participants also gained knowledge on how to use email safely, about protection from malware, safe browsing techniques, and so much more.

thank You from the President The Chamber of Commerce is fortunate to have a staff of 6 but a workforce many times that number due to the active participation by Chamber members in the daily work of the Chamber. October is traditionally the month that the Chamber honors those members and I want to add my appreciation to that of the Chamber for their hard work. While it does not recognize all that the members contribute to the Chamber, the information below showcases some of their work.

I must first acknowledge the Board of Directors, who not only make time to attend a monthly meeting to guide the policies of the Chamber, but are often in attendance at other Chamber functions. The Board also serves as the Chamber’s ambassadors to the community and enables the Chamber staff to hear from a wide range of the business and public communities.

The Executive Committee of the Board is a dedicated group that goes farther, with additional meetings monthly to conduct financial and personnel matters for the Chamber and to recommend policy items to the full Board.

The Chamber Ambassadors serve as the public face of the Chamber, and these members give an extraordinary amount of their time to attend ribbon cuttings, go on Chamber Connection visits and to assist the Chamber staff with events such as the annual golf classic and the member appreciation luncheon. I cannot thank the Ambassadors enough for their work for the Chamber.

Our Education Committee of the Chamber recognizes talented students with the annual STAR Student appreciation breakfast and welcomes new teachers with the annual Teacher Induction Program luncheon. Not only does the education committee organize and conduct these events, members raise the thousands of dollars necessary to enable the Chamber to host these events.

The Small Business Council is the group that plans and conducts the monthly Business Booster’s Luncheon, planning programs and speakers months in advance. This group works diligently to create programs that will educate and entertain a wide cross section of attendees, and they never fail to please with their presentation selections.

Government Affairs keeps our members current on legislative issues both locally and at the State level. This committee organizes an annual Henry County Day at the State Capitol, not only allowing members a meaningful opportunity to hear directly from members of our legislative delegation but other statewide office holders as well. At the same time, the committee provides a gift bag to each legislator and key state officials that showcases Henry County’s manufactured or centered products.

Our Membership Committee conducts an annual membership drive, enabling the Chamber to broaden its reach, but also meets regularly to ensure a consistent program to build the membership of the Chamber.

The Boards of Leadership Henry and Youth Leadership Henry give an enormous amount of time to building both present and future leaders. These dedicated members often participate not only in regular monthly board meetings, but also in the monthly activity of the leadership classes.

On Tuesday, October 31st, the Chamber will host all of its members at the annual Member Appreciation Luncheon. I encourage you to dress in your favorite Halloween costume and attend this luncheon. You will enjoy some barbecue, but more likely you will meet a new friend or have the opportunity to catch up with long time acquaintances. I hope to see you there.
