MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
JUNE WOOD
A
Leonard Moreland President and CEO at Heritage Bank 2016 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce
Change is in the Air
h, the change of seasons. As the hot and dry summer transitions into more tolerable days and pleasant nights we all seem to be ready for change. Friday night lights at the local high schools, Saturday afternoon college football and yes NFL Sundays; life doesn’t get much better! Okay well some of you are snickering or rolling your eyes, but in the end all of the above give us an opportunity to fellowship with friends and families and enjoy our leisure time. We all could probably use more of that! Well the kids have settled back in to school and daily life just seems to have a little more structure. We Henry Countians are very fortunate to have such a great school system and a community that supports our teachers and administrators. This year Henry County hired more
than 400 new teachers and the community through the Chamber of Commerce stepped up to offer them encouragement, a welcoming meal and gifts to help them get established in their new jobs. It is one thing to say the community supports its schools, but when leaders step forward and put their time, talent and treasure where their mouths are it speaks much more powerfully. So a big thank you to the Chamber and all those that contributed to this year’s effort and of course a hearty welcome to all of our new teachers and a welcome back to those returning for another year of service. As the political process shifts gears, it is my hope that we can find time to focus on what unites us rather than how we differ. There are so many things that we can do in this community to improve it
and leave it a better place than what we have inherited. We often disagree on the best way to accomplish things, but in the end the vast majority of us all want the same things. So I hope we can focus on the common ground and not rip to shreds the very fabric that holds us together. Henry’s best days are ahead of us and together we can make a difference. I see it every day. Whether it is at the Chamber, One Henry, the Rotary Club or any other civic organization; people of all walks of life come together for a cause greater than themselves. I am proud to be a resident of Henry County and I know you are as well. We have some great elected and appointed officials that try to make Henry greater and to them I am grateful. Let’s encourage them to continue to do the right thing.

About Life Enrichment Realty At Life Enrichment Realty, we are committed to helping people buy, sell, lease and manage real estate. Our team of Licensed Professionals strive to enrich the lives of others by helping them reach their real estate goals and by connecting them with the information and resources necessary to achieve those goals. One of the things our clients love about us is that we are a small independent firm with the flexibility to give full attention to our clients. We have 5 full-time agents ready to assist our clients and achieve the desired goal in short order.
About The Owners Carlton has numerous graduate degrees, and after retiring from AT&T, he and Audrey ventured into Real Estate to fund their love of travel and supplement their retirement income. Unfortunately, their entry into the market came at a time when the economic climate for Real Estate was on the downturn. Having an entrepreneurial spirit, a Bachelors in Business Administration, and more than 15 years at a major technology company in
California, Audrey convinced Carlton to open a full service Brokerage, and their tenacity paid off. They formed Life Enrichment Group, the parent company of Life Enrichment Realty, and Life Enrichment Property Management.
Community Support We are an organization of faith. Carlton and Audrey are both members of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, on Racetrack Road in McDonough Georgia. Audrey sings in the choir and Carlton serves on the usher board. We also volunteer on various committees and outreach ministries designed to minister outside the walls of the church.
Chamber Involvement We relocated our business from North Fulton to Henry County in 2007. We’ve been members of the Chamber for a couple of years, and are just now beginning to take advantage of all of the marketing tools available to us. The Chamber gives us an outlet to “tell our story” and tell people that we are more than just another real estate company, but a small community of realtors who care about our client’s goals and dreams. We are putting together the necessary tools and connections to grow in this ever-changing market and move swiftly toward the goal. With the Chamber’s help, we plan to make an impact upon the community and live up to our name, Life Enrichment Realty.

When you’re starting a business or trying to bring in new customers, competing on price might be tempting. Often, new business owners think they must undercut everyone else because it’s the only way to draw customers. But reducing your prices with countless sales and discounts could lead to your demise. Never make price the main reason a customer would buy from you instead of your competitors. If your customers’ only reason for shopping with you is price, as soon as a competitor offers a lower price, they’ll leave. As you have the cheapest price, you’ll have a customer. With these people, you may never be able to establish a loyal customer base. Resist the temptation to get tangled in the discounting trap with your competitors. That’s when business rivals offer bigger and bigger discounts until one of them can no longer sustain the low prices and either has to raise prices or go out of business. Usually, the company that wins the price war is much
larger with better profit margins (think neighborhood grocery store vs. Mega Big Box store). Once you’re out of the way, your competition is free to raise prices. So what can you do instead? Try to emphasis the quality and value of your products and services. Your customers must understand that the cheapest price doesn’t always mean the best value. Focus on your industry experience, well trained employees and high level of customer care. More often than you think, customers are willing to pay a higher price if it ensures reliable and timely service. If you’re not a start-up, talk about your longevity in the industry and large number of satisfied customers. Competing only on price is not a good idea. Discounting is a vicious cycle that could easily lead to your final “going out of business sale”. While price is usually a factor in making a purchasing decision, don’t under estimate the customer’s desire for quality, reliability and good service over something that is just cheap.

CHAMBER BRIEFS
Leadership Henry kicks off a new class year
Learn about the great things that are happening in our community…
Congrats to Ga. Rep. Brian Strickland on receiving the 2016 Legislator of the Year Award!
Georgia United Credit Union is pleased to announce the hiring of Robert A. Bogart as Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Bob will assume the CFO responsibilities from Todd Gustafson, who will continue to serve as the credit union’s Executive Vice President.
The Leadership Henry Class of 2017 came together for the first time on August 17 at a kick-off luncheon held at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. The luncheon, sponsored by Shane’s Rib Shack, provided an opportunity for the thirty-three class members to meet their new Leadership Henry classmates and board members and learn more about the upcoming class year. Leadership Henry Chair J. D. Hardin provided the welcome and introduced the 18-member board of directors who develop and lead the annual leadership program. Pam Milling, outgoing board chair, led the class in an icebreaker, and Chamber President David Gill shared the history and purpose of the Leadership Henry program. Other board members were on hand to offer information about the upcoming year’s programs, expectations and projects.
The class members will officially begin their program year at an overnight retreat in early September and then launch into their monthly programs later in the month. The first class session will focus on the County’s history and explore some of the people and places that make our community unique. Leadership Henry is a program of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and seeks to prepare, involve and sustain leaders from diverse backgrounds who are committed and competent to address community challenges and improve the quality of life in Henry County. It is one of more than 1,000 leadership development programs throughout the United States. The ten month program is designed to provide a series of educational and participatory experiences as well as an opportunity for dialogue and the development of new personal relationships among participants. The class is also involved in addressing the needs of our community through a legacy project chosen by the class members. For more information on Leadership Henry, visit www. leadershiphenry.com.
The Process of Selecting the Best of the Best
The Heritage Community Foundation presented a grant to Marjorie Lacy, Executive Director of the Flint Circuit Council on Family Violence, Inc. dba Haven House, on July 26, 2016. The $3,000 grant will be used by the Haven House Shelter to purchase new furniture.
The last week of August and first week of September are a busy time for the members of the Youth Leadership Henry Selections Committee. As you read this, committee members are looking through each of the approximately 150 applications for the program, evaluating them against a rubric to determine which 40 or so applicants will be chosen for this leadership development program for
Henry County high school sophomores. Our committee looks at applications that have no names or parental information, to ensure that each application is evaluated purely on its merit. Once each individual committee member evaluates all of their applications (organized by random respondent number), the committee assembles, puts all their scores together, evaluates outliers, and selects
the top 40 or so applications. Once organized by respondent number, the names are plugged back in, and we see who the Youth Leadership Henry Class will be. It’s a pretty rigorous process, and is designed to ensure that participants in each year’s class are selected purely by merit. When you see the class announced in next month’s HenryCounty.com, take a moment to congratulate
class participants. They truly have earned their spot in this leadership development program! Questions about the program? Drop us a line at youthleadership@ leadershiphenry.com

JULY BUSINESS AFTER HOURS RECAP
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2016 – 5:30 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.
HOSTED BY COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT (THE OFFICIAL HOTEL OF THE NFL) 115 MILL ROAD MCDONOUGH, GA 30253
The Courtyard by Marriott brand features hotels with a refreshing environment that helps guests stay connected, productive and balanced while traveling. Intuitive services and design accommodate guests’ desire for choice and control and allow them to use the public space and guest rooms to meet all of their needs while on the road. With more than 1,000 locations in more than 40 countries, Courtyard has more locations than any other Marriott International brand. One of which is right here in Henry County! A large percent of Courtyard’s target
customers are NFL fans, with most of them saying they are “passionate” fans. What better way to cater to them than by being the Official Hotel of the NFL and creating NFL-related rewards and experiences? Imagine having to travel for work on a Monday and walking into the lobby of your local Courtyard hotel to big screen TVs featuring Monday Night Football. Instead of watching alone in your room with no one to complain to about your team’s struggling defense, you can join other fans downstairs for the festivities. And this September, the Courtyard Marriott of McDonough will be hosting the
Chamber Business After Hours with a Football Party in celebration of the upcoming NFL football season. The hotel lobby will be decorated, popcorn will be served, and there will be food and refreshments. Undoubtedly, the Courtyard Marriott of McDonough is the place to be on game nights! Take this opportunity to learn more about their products and enjoy the ultimate NFL super-fan experience while you mingle with colleagues and enjoy refreshments and light Hors d’oeuvres. Business After Hours are free networking events for members and their invited (adult) guests.
Business After Hours is a monthly networking event designed to bring 40-50 business professionals together to meet and build relationships in an informal setting. Each event is hosted by a different Chamber member and is a great way to meet new people and see the diverse business community in Henry County.
TO HOST A BUSINESS AFTER HOURS, PLEASE CONTACT THE CHAMBER AT:
770-957-5786
August Business Afters Hours(BAH) was hosted by Elite Chamber Member, Heritage Bank, at their executive offices located on Eagles Landing Parkway in Henry County, GA. Fellow members had the opportunity to meet the Heritage Bank family from branches all over the county while mingling with colleagues and enjoying the amazing food prepared by The
Grand Gourmet along with beer, wine and refreshments. They also had cold hard cash as door prizes from the Heritage Bank vault! As usual, the monthly Chamber jackpot drawing for Chamber Members was held with the pot at a whopping $150. Three names were called, but sadly...they were not in attendance. Special thank you to all who donated door prizes!
