CVB Offers a “Leg Up” to Local Tourism Partners
Henry County’s tourism partners are getting a marketing leg up from the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The CVB launched a new tourism marketing grant program in June. Eligible tourism businesses or events were able to apply for grant funding for various marketing initiatives. Five applicants were awarded grants for marketing projects for the 3rd Quarter. These grants will supplement the grantees’ existing marketing plans to broaden their reach for specific initiatives or events. Through the increased marketing expenditures, future visitors will be exposed to billboards, radio ads and social media ads in areas and through mediums not possible if the partners were to be limited to their own resources. The CVB’s effectiveness is greatly enhanced as the newly created partnerships not only strengthens partners’ marketing, but leverages the CVB’s advertising funds to exponentially increase Henry County’s presence in front of consumers. Ultimately this leads to more business for everyone and a stronger economy. In order to be eligible for these funds, tourism businesses had to be within the CVB’s geographical service area and apply for assistance for a marketing initiative that could attract NEW visitors from outside Henry County. “We received a lot of wonderful applications for projects that have the potential to draw a whole new audience to Henry County,” stated Jeff Mills, Chairman of the Henry County CVB Board of Directors. “We believe that through this grant we can better position Henry County as a destination and we look forward to continuing this program.” One of the organizations that received a grant was the Academy Theatre/

Henry Arts Alliance. “Receiving this grant means a lot to the Henry Arts Alliance and the Academy Theatre,” stated Lynna Schmidt, President of the Henry Arts Alliance. “With this grant and the support of the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau we are better able to reach a wider audience and make them aware of the County’s outstanding artistic talent. Bringing audiences in from outside the County for our performances and events, not only supports our programs but supports economic development in our county. We are proud to receive this grant and look forward to this partnership with the CVB.” This tourism marketing grant will be a quarterly program, though available funding may vary. Applications for the fourth quarter are due by October 1. Henry County Chamber President David Gill praised the program saying, “This is a win-win, not just the CVB and the grantees, but of all of Henry County.” For questions about the program or a copy of the grant criteria and application contact Laura Luker at lluker@henrycounty.com or (770) 957-5786.

Message from the Chair June Wood
Together Making Henry Better… One Henry Economic Alliance
Many community leaders are working cooperatively to make Henry County better. For the past seven years, Henry County business leaders working with elected and appointed officials have participated in a Henry County Intergovernmental Retreat (IGR) to improve the economic environment of our community. Each year since the IGR’s inception, I have personally witnessed county-wide representatives from The Henry County Board of Commissioners, Mayors & Council Members, Henry County Development Authority, Henry County Board of Education, post-
secondary institutions, hospital executives, Henry County Water Authority & business leaders discuss, strategize and implement several key initiatives to improve not only our economic prosperity but also the quality of life in Henry County. One of the IGR’s most notable successes was the implementation of the Economics & Education (E2) Task Force. As a result of the E2 initiatives, Henry County is now the home of Georgia’s largest College & Career Academy, Southern Crescent Technical College, Communities in Schools to help at-risk students, a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math (STEAM) Afterschool Program with UGA at Stockbridge Middle School, and a summer reading program in our Parks & Recreation Summer Camps to just name a few specific accomplishments.
Alliance is currently underway for another community-wide effort to advance the economic prosperity and wellness of Henry County. The leaders and participants will focus on five key areas: 1) Workforce Development; 2) Professional Services in North Henry; 3) Industrial Hub and Advanced Manufacturing in South Henry; 4) Image & Communications and 5) Arts and Leisure. An update of the One Henry short-term and long term strategies and implementation plans will be the focus of this year’s eighth Henry County Intergovernmental Retreat.
I commend our Henry County officials and leaders for taking on this long-term commitment to blend the new with the old as we Currently, our Henry County manage growth while maintaining some of leaders continue to collaboour comfortable living in Henry County. A rate for workforce developspecial thank you goes to Geoffrey Cauble ment, targeted industries for and Leonard Moreland for Co-Chairing this job creations, quality of life enhancements and other eco- worthwhile effort as well as to Richard Sylvia, nomic factors to improve our Jr., Jeff Mills, Jeff Cooper, J.D. Hardin, Lincoln Parks and Charlie Moseley for providing leadcommunity. As a matter of fact, a One Henry Economic ership in the individual work groups.
Together…we’re making Henry better.

Have you ever gotten an email that makes you mad? Maybe an employee misunderstood directions, or a vendor messed up an order, or an important customer is threatening to leave. I don’t care what kind of technology you have; once you hit “Send,” it’s almost impossible to retract the email. And then later you realize that you should have worded your reply differently. More logically. Less emotionally. Here’s a list of the things you could consider before sending an important communication (even if the communication is in person):
1. Consider the purpose. What do you want the receiver to hear, think, and feel as a result of the communication. Visualize the result you’d like to achieve. 2. Analyze the audience. Who will be seeing or hearing the message, and what secondary (unintended) audiences might also see or hear? How will the audience need to hear it, and how are they likely to react? 3. Compose the message. What things are most important for you to say? It may sound over-simplified, but think of the who, what, where, when, how, and why questions that the audience might have. 4. Think of the feedback. What do you want to happen? The audience, whether it’s an employee, vendor, customer, or
someone else, will need instructions on how to respond. If you need an answer, make sure you ask for it in specific terms. Often communication isn’t successful simply because we didn’t end it with specific next steps. We’re all busy, but taking the time to really think and go through the above steps before an important communication can make all the difference. And another thing: if this is a business communication, remove the feeling/ emotion words from the communication. Consider the difference between “This situation has really caused a problem for us,” and “This situation has caused a problem for us.” By removing the word “really,” we made the same sentence more logical. Try this in your next communication, and as always, the SBDC is here to help.

It's Time for Kick-Off Our newest class of Leadership Henry, the Class of 2016, is ready to embark on their year of learning about all things Henry County. Our class will be exposed to many things they may not have known or seen before regarding the county where they work and/or call home, and many class members will get the chance to go more in depth on topics they thought they knew all about. The kick-off luncheon in August and subsequent retreat in September will provide the foundation for friendships and bonds that will only strengthen through the year’s learning experience. Over the coming months, updates will be shared through the Leadership Henry Facebook page and the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly newsletter. These are both great opportunities to keep up with all the wonderful experiences our class is encountering.

Teachers new to Henry County, report in late July to take part in a special introduction to the school system and community called the Teacher Induction Program (T.I.P). Through this program, which is unique to Henry County, the new teachers are given the opportunity to meet Board members, administrators, fellow teachers and community members. This year, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce along with Henry County Board of Education were proud to be welcoming 500 new teachers to the Henry County School System. To welcome them to the largest employer in Henry County, each year, the Chamber of Commerce and its members come together and provide each and every teacher with a bag full of supplies. from Communities In Schools of Henry County Pencils, paper, erasers, highlighters, notebooks, etc. These are all basic tools that our students need when they are in the classroom. Students loose them, they forget them, and sometimes can’t find them. So they often get sent to the Graduation Coach’s office to get a replacement. Donations such as the one from the Henry County Chamber of Commerce fills a gap and helps to prevent the interruption of the delivery of education for our students.
A big thank you to the Henry County Chamber of Commerce for their donation of school supplies to CIS. The Chamber welcomed over 400 new teachers to the county with bags loaded with supplies – and donated the unused items to our graduation coaches. We love our Chamber partners! - CIS

FINANCIAL FOCUS Inflation and Your Retirement Income Strategy
269134-1
You might not think much about inflation. After all, it’s been quite low for the past several years. Still, you may want to take it into account when you’re planning your retirement income strategy.
retirement income?
One thing you can certainly do is include an inflation assumption in your calculations of how much annual income you’ll need. The number you choose as an inflation factor could possibly be based on recent inflation levels, but you might want to err on the conservative side and use a slightly higher figure. Since you may be retired for two or three decades, you might have to periodically adjust the inflation factor to correspond to the actual inflation rate.
Of course, no one can really predict the future course of inflation. But it’s a pretty safe bet it won’t disappear altogether — and even a mild inflation rate, over time, can strongly erode your purchasing power. Consider this: If you were to purchase an item today for $100, that same item, in 25 years, would cost you $209, assuming an annual inflation rate of 3%. That’s a pretty Another important step is big difference. maintaining an investment During your working years, you portfolio that can potentially can hope that your income will provide returns well above the at least rise enough to match inflation rate. Historically, stocks inflation. But what about when have been the only investment you retire? How can you minimize category — as opposed to the impact of inflation on your investments such as Treasury bills
and long-term government bonds — whose returns have significantly outpaced inflation. So you may want to consider owning an appropriate percentage of stocks and stock-based investments in your portfolio, even during your retirement years.
Now, you might be concerned at the mention of the words “stocks” and “retirement years” in the same sentence. After all, stocks will fluctuate in value, sometimes dramatically, and even though you may be retired for a long time, you won’t want to wait for years to “bounce back” from a bad year in the market. But not all investments move in the same direction at the same time; spreading your dollars among a range of asset classes — large stocks, small and midcap stocks, bonds, , certificates of deposit (CDs), foreign investments
Having More Retirement Accounts is Not the Same as Having More Money. When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better” is not necessarily true. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees.

Bringing your accounts to Edward Jones could help solve all that. Plus, one statement can make it easier to see if you’re moving toward your goals. *Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.
