he 17th annual Henry County Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic will be held on Monday, September 25th at Eagle’s Brooke Golf & Country Club. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to participate in the Chamber’s annual golfing event. The Classic will kick off with a shotgun start at 10:00 AM. There will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place teams and the Putting Green Contest winner, as well as Hole-in-One, Closest to the Pin, and Long Drive contests.

Lunch will be provided during the event, and there will be food and drinks available during the awards presentation in the dining room following the event.

It continues to blow my mind! The current population of Henry County is greater than the population of Augusta/Richmond County, the population of Columbus/Muscogee County or the population of Macon/ Bibb County. Isn’t that amazing? Because these facts are so surprising to me, I double checked the numbers again before writing this column, and they are still true!

(Augusta was actually the capitol of Georgia periodically from 1785 until 1795.) However, what is striking to me, given our current population, is the difference in the infrastructure of those cities and that of Henry County. It is not only that these cities have traffic arteries that cause us great envy, but they also have parks, public buildings and many other facilities that we do not have.

In recent months, I have had the opportunity to work with clients in all three of these Georgia cities. Obviously, each of these Georgia cities has a long history as a population, commercial, and governmental center in their respective areas of the state.

The tremendous growth of Henry County’s population in recent decades has greatly outrun the development of our infrastructure. (In 1990, our population was 58,000; in 2000, it was 119,000. Today, it is 222,000.) We are acutely aware of this

fact. However, rather than just complain, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, working with the Henry County Development Authority and all of our governmental entities, is seeking to address this issue.

Working through our annual Intergovernmental Retreat and our One Henry Initiative, our leadership is offering all of our citizens an opportunity to join the effort and work together. It is an exciting time to become involved and put your concerns into action. Please join me, with so many of our colleagues, in participating in our One Henry Initiative. Strategic Retreats and the

The final quarter for 2017 is about to begin, and the New Year will be here before you know it. The beginning of fourth quarter is when most proactive companies host strategic planning retreats to connect with their teams on deeper levels and make preparations, including budget allocations, for the coming year. The outcome or deliverable from this time of reflection, evaluation, visioning, idea exchange, forecasting and preparation is the “living business plan”.

A living business plan is like a good roadmap. It provides detailed information about the journey ahead and, as you travel, it is referenced frequently for guidance and measuring progress. This is why it is sometimes referred to as a “journey map”.

A living business plan also provides instrumentation for internal checks and balances, as well as contingencies to respond to significant marketplace changes. It must be adaptable to remain relevant and translated into the user’s native language. This isn’t a reference to languages like English, Spanish, or Japanese, but visual, audible, spatial and textual learning languages. In short, a living business plan comes “alive” for its audience.

And the first audience that should be impacted and transformed by the plan is you, the creator. It should speak to you in a way that satisfactorily articulates your vision, how it will be executed, and what impact is

desired. Once your plan authentically speaks to you, it can be converted into other formats that speak the necessary languages for other audiences, like managers, employees, bankers, investors, prospective business partners, etc.

The practice of creating and following a living business plan or journey map should recur throughout the business lifecycle and is particularly useful for the strategic planning needs of seasoned companies.

Regardless of the format you choose to capture your plan, it should be updated at least annually, and reviewed frequently, preferably monthly. These are not random units of time, but periods that allow enough activity to be executed, measured, and compared.

Proper analysis of the data collected will provide the business intelligence needed to take the best next steps.

Developing and maintaining a living business plan bolsters the cycle of planning, executing, evaluating, and adjusting. With successful repetition, this practice is sure to have your business in top form and position it as a force to be reckoned with in the marketplace. Leadership Henry Kicks Off New Class Year

Being Choosy The last week of August and first week of September are a busy time for the members of the Youth Leadership Henry Selections Committee. As you read this, committee members are looking through each of the approximately 150 applications for the program, evaluating them against a rubric to determine which 40 or so applicants will be chosen for this leadership development program for Henry County high school sophomores.

Our committee looks at applications that have no names or parental information, to ensure that each application is evaluated purely on its merit. Once each individual committee member evaluates all of their applications (organized by random respondent number), the committee assembles, puts all their scores together, evaluates outliers, and selects the top 40 or so applications.

The Leadership Henry Class of 2018 came together for the first time on August 16 at a kick-off luncheon held at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce.

The luncheon provided an opportunity for the 29 class members to meet their new Leadership Henry classmates and board members and learn more about the upcoming class year.

Leadership Henry Chair Brian Andrews provided the welcome and introduced the 18-member board of directors who develop and lead the annual leadership program. Board members Laura Turner and Scott Whitmire led the group in an icebreaker followed by an invocation. After lunch by Shane’s Rib Shack, Chamber President David Gill shared the

history and purpose of the Leadership Henry program. Other board members were on hand to offer information about the upcoming year’s programs, expectations and projects.

The class members will officially begin their program year at an overnight retreat in early September and then launch into their monthly programs later in the month. The first class session will focus on the County’s history and explore some of the people and places that make our community unique.

Gordon State College contributed more than $144 million to the regional economy and provided 1,317 jobs in fiscal year 2016, according to a report by the University System of Georgia.

Students all across Henry County Schools will be receiving their personal learning devices soon with the rollout of the district’s 1:1 technology initiative known as EmpowerHCS. Henry County teachers joined the HCWA for the first annual “Rain to Drain” water resources workshop this summer, as part of the ongoing partnership between the HCWA, Henry County Schools, and Henry County Stormwater, to enhance public education in the protection and preservation of natural resources.

Henry County Historian

Mr. Gene Morris, Jr. is a Henry County native and earned his history degree at Shorter University in Rome Georgia. In 1992, he accepted the official, but unpaid, position of Henry County Historian. In 2000, he published True Southerners: a Pictorial History of Henry County Georgia.

He continues to collect, research, and write local history and shares it with others.

The year 2021 brings a monumental moment in the life of Henry County—The Henry County Bicentennial celebration. We are excited to commemorate our 200 years of achievement. Over the course of 2021, we will be celebrating Henry County’s amazing impact on society, and the people who helped shape the community we are today. Gene will speak on this celebration as well as the amazing history and significance of Henry County.

The goal is to create a bicentennial committee to coordinate the efforts of various groups.
