KLAMATH FALLS – The Klamath Basin Senior Citizens' Center will host a free seminar at the Senior Center on Sept. 18 aimed at helping senior citizens succeed financially. Wells Fargo Financial Advisor Michael Rivera and Personal Banker Deanna Moss will speak from noon to 12:45 p.m. They will provide information about financial products and services that Wells Fargo offers and will provide instruction on the use of an interactive WEB site HandsOnBanking.org that includes a special section for seniors.

Welcome Last week we sent our receptionist, Judy Crist, into retirement land after 24 years of service to the Senior Center. She will be missed, but I am sure we will be calling on her from time to time with questions about the past and asking for advice as well. It’s her wonderful smile that we will miss the most. Joining us Marc Kane, Center Director to help replace Judy will be Joanne Campbell who has been training to replace Judy for the past few months. Please take a moment to welcome her when you’re here, although I suspect she will catch you first with her welcome and offer to be of service. We are excited to have Joanne join our team. This last month we have continued to build program offerings in health promotion and we are excited to announce a new Walk With Ease class to start in October on the 6th. All of the health classes have been very popular and classes fill up quickly. Please call early to register. If the time is not right for you call anyway and let us know, we are open to establishing additional Walk With Ease classes in a different time frame than the one we are announcing today. The development of this class is a joint collaboration among the Arthritis Foundation, the OSU Extension office, the County Fairgrounds and the Senior Center. The Arthritis Foundation developed the program and did the hard work to achieve recognition for the program as meeting evidence based standards assuring the program produces positive health results. The OSU Extension office promotes the program throughout the area and facilitates the training of class instructors. The Fairgrounds will assist with space for walking when the weather prohibits outdoor walking, and the Senior Center will oversee the program by taking registrations and fees, contracting with a properly trained and certified instructor and providing the support needed to make the program run. This is a new and exciting collaboration for the Senior Center. We are working this month with a number of other partners as well. On the 18th Atrio Heath Plans is sponsoring a flu shot clinic and health fair featuring a number of health providers. There will also be a presentation that same day from the staff of a local bank

to help seniors with issues of finance and fiscal management. In addition we are working with the Dept of Human Services to bring us a presentation October 9th on Senate Bill 21 concerning long term care for seniors, and with the OSU Extension Office brings us a workshop on October 6th relating to the Clean Energy Works Program. Please take a moment to recognize all the wonderful people and businesses that work with and support the Senior Center. The Center’s success rests on their efforts and our volunteers as well. (Senior Health Insurance Program)

This month we’re going to talk about Medicare Part D - drug insurance. There are two main reasons for this: Open enrollment is coming up soon {Oct. 15 to Dec. 07} and Part D seems to be the most troublesome for people to keep abreast of and navigate. One of the reasons that Part D can be troublesome is that people’s drugs change on a regular basis and it may be necessary to get a different plan from time to time. There’s more information about Part D than can possibly be covered in a short column like this, so I’ll try and briefly summarize the salient points in order to facilitate your choices or changes, if any. 1. Medicare Part D plans are provided by private insurance companies. You may purchase a “stand-alone” prescription drug plan with regular Medicare, or get your drug coverage through an Advantage health plan. Plans can vary greatly, both in what they cover and the premium cost, so you need to shop around to get the coverage that suits you best. 2. You become eligible for Part D as soon as you are enrolled in either Part A, Part B, or both. Coverage is not mandatory, but if you do not enroll in Part D when you’re first eligible, there’s a 1% per month premium penalty for every month you delay. You can purchase your drug plan when first eligible and change it only during open enrollment period each year. If you have “creditable coverage” in another plan, such as an employer group health plan, veterans, union, etc., your health plan administrator will need to provide a letter for you stating that this is so – to avoid penalty. 3. Extra Help ( or Low Income Subsidy – LIS) is available for persons with limited income. Be sure and check with your SHIBA counselor if you think you might qualify for the Low Income Subsidy. He or she can check the eligibility tables, ask the right questions, and even help you sign up for the program. With Extra Help, your premium will be reduced substantially or be eliminated entirely. Also, retail drug costs will be greatly reduced, or even be free. If you’re receiving Extra Help you can sign up or change plans anytime during the year without penalty. Oregon SHIBA (Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance) produces a guide each year which lists all the drug insurance companies licensed to do business in Oregon. It includes estimates of how much your monthly premium and deductibles will be. Even better, anyone can log onto medicare.gov and enter all the drugs he/she takes and the computer program will produce a list of companies specific to your needs. SHIBA counselors do this regularly for clients on-site. So you are urged to make an appointment, bring in a complete list of drugs/dosages you take, and we’ll help you narrow down your search for what plan is best for you. Also, there’s plenty more details about Part D you need to know, too complex to cover here. Just call the Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center at 541-8837171 and ask for a SHIBA appointment with one of our trained and certified counselors. Fats and Oils - Part 2 They are essential to your health!

Remember that the term ‘lipid’ applies to both fats and oils. A process called hydrogenation forces hydrogen through a lipid accompanied by a nickel catalyst. This hydrogen attaches itself to the open bonds of a fatty acid, making the fatty acids more stable for storage, since the hydrogen takes the spaces where oxygen might otherwise attach itself to create rancidity. Nutritionally speaking, the hydrogenation process is an absolute, unconscionable disaster because of its destruction of linoleic acid, the most vital fatty acid in nutrition. Your body cannot make this vitamin, and you must get your body’s supply of linoleic acid in your daily consumption of food. Remember that many nutritional writings here and especially in Europe call this substance ‘Vitamin F.’ Low fat diets are an absolute disaster over any period of time, as they also exclude the fat soluble vitamins. Whole lines of processed, low-fat foods are now available on the market, and unfortunately, they are very popular among those who have become convinced that the fat content of the diet causes the huge increases in weight now seen in so many physical bodies. For many, these low fat foods are the staples of their diets, and they completely ignore the wholesome, whole foods that are so easily and reasonably available. This precipitous decrease in the amount of fats and oils in the daily food intake of so many with the corresponding decrease in the fat soluble vitamins in the daily diet has resulted in an entire raft of degenerative physical diseases that were virtually unknown to those who lived in the 1700’s and 1800’s. Though Europeans commonly use the term ‘vitamin F’ to designate linoleic acid, linolenic acid and arachidonic acid, source material in the United States normally calls these the three essential fatty acids. You have already seen a discussion of the importance of this vitamin that your body builds into the cellular structure of every soft tissue. If you still do not clearly understand the importance of this vitamin, reread the section on these oils, for this information is only rarely covered elsewhere, and it is vitally important for your own health. Your physical body is an absolute miracle of design and function. This physical body enables our spirits to spend each productive day here on the physical plane, learning our lessons of life, interacting with friends and business associates, and assisting others through their days of trial and tribulation. The more attention we pay to the health and vigor of these physical bodies we inhabit and their most effective nutrition, the longer the body will live, and more important lessons and days of activity we will have as we go through this life. NEW Service offered by Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Free Shuttle Bus Service offered to Senior Citizens

The Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair in conjunction with the Merrill Park Service, Crater Lake Trollies and Walmart will be providing a free shuttle bus service for senior citizens from Klamath Falls and Merrill to the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 6th and Sunday, September 7th. The shuttle bus will be offering one pickup site in Klamath Falls at the Walmart Parking Lot. The pickup site will be located on the south end of the Walmart Parking Lot. The shuttle bus will also have a pickup site in Merrill at the Merrill Park District. The pickup site will be located in the picnic area behind the Polar Bear Restaurant. The shuttle bus schedule is listed below. Please call the fair office at 530-667-5312 for more information about this new service! The Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair would like to extend a big thanks to the Merrill Park District, Crater Lake Trolley and to Walmart for helping to provide this important service to the area’s senior citizens.

Many of us know, weight management and consistent exercise are especially important for heart health. However, the types of foods we consume are equally as important for heart health and reducing the risk of stroke. Although improving our diet is a step in the right direction in order to prevent heart disease, we often are unsure of where to begin the process or even what types of foods are preferred for a heart-healthy diet. Keep in mind that no single food selection will guarantee good health overnight. However, adopting a variety of healthy food choices, prepared in a healthy fashion, will be a positive step towards a healthier lifestyle. Eat more foods which include: • Healthy fats – raw nuts, olive oil, fish oils, flax seeds, avocados • Fruits and vegetables - colorful fruits and vegetables prepared without butter • Fiber – cereals, breads, pasta from whole grains or legumes • Omega 3 and proteins – fish, shellfish, poultry • Calcium and protein – egg whites, egg substitutes, skim or 1% milk, low-fat or nonfat cheeses or yogurt Steer clear of: • Trans fats from partially hydrogenated or deep-fried foods; as well as saturated fats from whole-fat dairy or red meat • Packaged foods, especially those high in sodium content • White or egg breads, granola-type cereals and refined pastas and rice • Red meat, bacon, sausage and fried chicken • Egg yolks, whole or 2% milk, whole milk products (cheese or yogurt) A great first step to living a healthier lifestyle is to consult with your primary care physician to discuss appropriate exercise and dietary changes. Such a small amount of time is required to become a member of this group. I’m sure you have figured out that the people in this group are the VOLUNTEERS that help at KBSCC every day. We are in need of more volunteers. By giving just a portion of your time you will realize how much you are appreciated. Volunteers are currently required for:

MEALS ON WHEELS DRIVERS AND RUNNERS Drivers (men or women) are assigned to existing routes delivering meals to homebound seniors five (5) days per week or filling n for a driver that’s unable to drive due to illness. Runners are used to deliver food from the vehicles to the clients.

COMMUNITY LOUNGE Volunteers (women & men) for the Lounge located at 7th and Pine Streets. Volunteers serve to staff the lounge acting as a receptionist and support person to individuals and families who come to the Lounge for activities, classes, to use the public rest rooms, to connect to the internet, use the library there and to find a place to rest while in the downtown area. Volunteer here for as little as 4 hours a week during business hours on weekdays as available. Substitutes also needed on call.

TRANSPORTATION DRIVERS Part or full time driver needed to transport seniors to medical appointments, shopping, recreation and other destinations. Good driving record will be required. Should be able to physically assists seniors when necessary with transfers between seats and mobility devices such as a wheel chair. Volunteer as little as once or twice a month for local trips with seniors using a vehicle provided by the Senior Center.
