Macro-Economics

The introduction course covers topics which includes gross domestic product, unemployment, monetary policy, fiscal policy, macro equilibrium, inflation, and supply and demand.

English Composition

Focusing on academic reading, writing and research skills, this course introduces critical reasoning and analysis. Students learn connections between thesis, structure, tone and purpose. It includes writing process, rhetorical strategies and applications.

Public Speaking

Public speaking emphasizes content, organization, speaker adjustments to various situations, dynamics of the speaker/listener, and appropriate language usage.

Introduction to Anthropology

This course explores culture, language, group formation, kinship, economic systems, political organizations, religion, and cultural change.

College Survival & Success College Research

Information literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information.

This course helps a student become a more effective learner, as well as make personal and social adjustments for college success. This course will cover college terms and information, class choice, degree requirements, etc. 7 of 24

Kaitlyn - “I love band because of the opportunities and friends I’ve made.” Klamath Union High School music students have a long history of excellence, having won numerous awards and state championships. Known for their musicianship and high standards of performance, there are many musical groups from which to choose. Those include Symphonic Band, Varsity Band Jazz Ensemble, JV Band Ensemble, Marching Band, Audrey Lindgren Junior Concert Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Small String Ensemble, A Capella Choir, Chamber Choir and Bel Canto Choir.

BAND (Marching, Symphonic) This course fosters collaboration through the art of music making. The first term is focused on Marching Band fundamentals. Students will experience first-hand, the significance of collaboration to create, evaluate and perform during football games. The second, third and fourth term is focused on cultural and historical connections to music and how to relay that information to our audience. Students will also focus on building community as well as how and why we play music. Students will be asked to use critical thinking skills to broaden their understanding of the musical arts as well as the cultural and historical significance of music making. Students will also be asked to deepen their understanding of how music works through the development of music theory skills.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE (Varsity, JV) Designed to provide the student with an opportunity to perform in the jazz idiom while developing skills in improvisation, musical, interpretation, style, and compositional techniques.

ACAPELLA (AC) CHOIR

A-cappella Choir is a full-year course, open by audition. This course will reinforce basic singing technique and introduce more advanced techniques including blend and balance, nuance, dynamics and various stylistic differences.

CHAMBER CHOIR

This small select ensemble is designed to teach students the proper vocal, rehearsal and stylistic characteristics of various musical eras.

BEL CANTO (BC) CHOIR

This intermediate choir is designed to teach students the basics of good choral singing, musicianship, and what it takes to make an excellent choir.

Students in Concert Orchestra will prepare and present string orchestra repertoire of intermediate difficulty and will present at least one public performance each quarter.

Timothy Chen Tess Tofell Students will refine understanding Junior Senior and skill in orchestral rehearsal, music theory, and music history. Various guest artist and conductor/clinicians are frequent contributors to the educational offering in the orchestra class. The orchestra also participates in the annual Southern Oregon Music Educators Association Orchestra Festival and other adjudicated events that provide professional criticism of the orchestra’s performance.

Game Design & Lab Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies and used to develop video games. The objective of the class is for students to become industry certified in Unity Game Design. Kari Woodward Senior Media Design Student

Career Pathways

Klamath Union High School launched its newest program 2016-2017, in partnership with Klamath Community College. The KU/KCC Career Pathways program provides opportunities for juniors and seniors to explore and begin a one-year certificate or the general education requirements for four different pathways: Computer Technician, Automotive/Diesel Technician, Welding, and Emergency Operations. The Klamath Falls City School District pays for all tuition and books in this program. 14 of 24

Auto Diesel Technology

Students in this pathway will receive preparation in a variety of areas of automotive service excellence using state of the art equipment with master technician instructors. They will also complete some of the general education requirements for earning a certificate in Auto Diesel Technology. This course is one of the most popular in the KU/KCC Career Pathways program and is a great choice for students looking to add more hands-on learning to their high school education and who may want to seek employment in this field.

Welding Students in this pathway will be introduced to welding through courses that can lead to Klamath Community College’s Welding one-year certificate of completion or they can explore the field as an area of interest. Emphasis areas include shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), oxyacetylene welding and cutting (OAW), and basic fabrication. Students will also take general education. classes required to complete a one-year certificate. 15 of 24

Computer Technician

The Computer Support Technician Career Pathway Certificate (16 credits) provides students the basic knowledge and skills needed to work with an information system. Students who complete this program will have a strong foundation in computer hardware, software, and networks. The curriculum allows students to acquire hands-on experience working with information system components in a lab setting as well as study information system concepts in a classroom setting.

Emergency Response Operations

Students interested in this pathway will learn about a variety of emergency response operations including first aid basics and beyond, the fundamentals of emergency response communications, the incident command system and crisis intervention. The courses in this pathway will prepare students to pursue an Emergency Medical Technician certificate or prepare to go into Fire Science or another field of public safety.

Culinary Arts Be a part of the new Culinary Arts Facilities coming to KU soon, where students in the program learn about nutrition, cooking techniques, seasonings and flavorings, safety and sanitation principles and food-service career opportunities. New facilities are coming to the Art Department at KU as well. The program will accommodate the beginning and intermediate art students, as well as the more advanced artist. Work will include sculpture, egg tempera and figure drawing. Students may be selected to create commercial art work when opportunities present themselves. All new and all exciting.
