CANNABIS DNA TESTING
By Justin Lowery Herbage Staff WriterIn my journey with medicinal cannabis, the path was anything but straightforward. Initially, I was enticed by the promise of relief from chronic pain and the hope for better sleep, only to be met with a perplexing array of products and dosages. The uncertainty of how to navigate the medicinal properties of cannabis, paired with the fear of potential side effects, left me feeling lost in a sea of options.
The turning point came when I discovered Dynamic DNA Laboratories' Cannabis DNA Test. The premise was simple yet revolutionary: a genetic test designed to unveil how my body interacts with cannabis. Intrigued by the prospect of personalized cannabis recommendations, I decided to give it a shot.
The process was straightforward. After ordering the kit, I provided a cheek swab sample and sent it back. The waiting period was filled with a mix of skepticism and anticipation. When the results finally arrived, they were nothing short of a revelation. The report detailed 13 genetic traits affecting my response to cannabis, offering insights into optimal THC and CBD dosages, product types best suited for my genetic makeup, and even potential side effects. Equipped with this personalized guidance, I approached my medicinal cannabis use with newfound confidence. The recommendations made a significant difference in managing my pain and improving my sleep quality, all while minimizing the side effects that had previously deterred me.
Reflecting on this experience, I realized the power of understanding one's genetic predisposition towards cannabis. Meet Megan Forehand. She was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Growing up, her mother was a baker and her father was an attorney, who later became a judge. She had a good up-bringing and a decent childhood to experience. I had the opportunity to chat with Megan about the many hats she wears for a thriving, family owned business, Arctic Fox.
Originally, Megan and her family were interested in the opportunity to run their own business and to be able to put quality medicine on the shelves for Oklahoma patients. The company began construction in July of 2020 and it took them over a year to completely build out their 20,000 sq ft facility, perform inspections, get the licensing situated, etc. Their first harvest was in August of 2021.
Arctic Fox is made up of six people. A majority women-owned cannabis operation. She hasn’t always had a green thumb and she does spend some time in the garden, but she primarily focuses on the fun legal activities like business management, sales, payroll, compliance, etc! All of these things are a major key in keeping the business afloat and Megan proudly takes the reins!
Everyone is family at Arctic Fox and Megan’s leadership style encompasses their core values. It’s all about being a team, having quality and quantity in all areas of life, family above all else, never taking yourself too seriously, letting your voice be heard, respecting everyone and not being better than others and ultimately loving what you do, while doing your best and then some!
While wearing many hats, Megan says that her plant babes are like her Excel budget sheet and sales goals sheet. Now, that’s a perspective! Really, she enjoys watching her husband working in the grow, with the plants, doing what he does best. Megan enjoys working on sales strategies and focusing on marketing. As long as the garden is on schedule and humming along, she’s happy!
I asked Megan where her happiest place is and she’s definitely a home body and an introvert! I’m sure many of you can relate to loving the comfort of your own home! There’s really nothing like it. When you create a space that feels safe and has everything you need in it, it’s natural to be drawn to looking forward to going back home. While also loving her home, Megan also loves spending time with her girlfriends, walking and spending time outside and family always.
Being a wife, a mother, and a business owner can be hard when trying to create a work life balance. Megan shares how she personally navigates the chaos, while finding beauty in the process.
“This one is hard. Create schedules and follow them. Lean on family to help a day or two with school pickups, etc. Use Sunday to prepare for the week. Put everything in your calendar with alerts. Every morning review your calendar. Handle what you have to handle that day. Handle your shit. You don't want to miss a deadline for licensing, taxes, payroll, etc. The only constant in this business is change. Change will happen all the time. Embrace change. Constantly be evaluating your business and the market. How can you differentiate yourself in the market? What makes sense? What are we doing that doesn't really move the needle? What are other people doing well?”
The legal aspect can be a headache, but we all know the ship doesn’t sail without it. Owning a company comes with highs and lows, especially when your livelihood depends on harvesting the crops you’ve nourished for a period of time, continuously, and selling them for profit. Megan handles all legal activities for Arctic Fox. This last year in 2023 was a very eventful one for them. In June 2023, Tulsa experienced a severe wind storm that caused a multi day power outage across the area. President Biden issued a Disaster Declaration. The power outage, extreme heat and humidity caused them to lose two harvests. They have cannabis crop insurance and their claim was denied because of an exception clause stating that utility services are excluded from claims. They are still currently in litigation for this issue.
Unfortunately, in business sometimes people take advantage of you, go behind your back and do things that cause harm to your business. Recently Arctic Fox has been in litigation regarding, what they state, are wrong doing’s done to them by a previous business partner. “It’s not for anyone to steal. It's time for the industry to understand and respect that. Other industries do. You can't steal the recipe from Pepsi. You can't steal the code from Facebook. You can't steal the genetics and run it. Unfortunately, says Megan, we have been forced to look into legal matters.
Their facility is partially built out with 4 flower rooms, a mom and veg room, clone, irrigation, office space, dry room, and a trim room. Each flower room has a 900 sq ft canopy. The team harvests every 2 weeks and provides about 120 lbs to the market every month. They use Canna nutrients, along with an outside trim crew, Total Harvest Care. Chris and Lacey and their team handle all the trimming for Arctic Fox, doing a beautiful boutique trim off of the stem. Arctic Fox offers fresh frozen materials to processors and also offers pre rolls.
At Arctic Fox, you can expect consistent top quality at a fair price, from a local Mom and Pop grow. They closely monitor conditions throughout the lifecycle to ensure the highest quality product will be delivered. They also are freaks about temperature and humidity, burping totes, etc. Going the extra mile for quality medicine is what they strive for! They take pride in their quality and consistency, cleanliness, business skillset and the ability to keep going even though cannabis is tough right now in Oklahoma.

OKLAHOMA'S 2024 CANNABIS LEGISLATION
A Tightrope Walk Between Progress and Overreach
By James Bridges Herbage MagazineAs we navigate through the smoky corridors of Oklahoma's proposed cannabis legislation for 2024, a mixed scent of progress and potential overregulation lingers in the air. The latest round of legislative proposals underscores the state's desire to refine its cannabis framework, ostensibly to enhance safety, compliance, and industry sustainability. Yet, beneath the surface of these well-intentioned reforms, there's a tangible tension—a fear that the pendulum might swing too far toward overregulation, potentially stifling the very growth and accessibility it seeks to foster.
The introduction of a myriad of bills, including the nuanced use of shell bills, signals a dynamic legislative landscape. This strategy, while offering flexibility, also injects a dose of unpredictability into the industry. It requires stakeholders to remain on their toes, ready to adapt to regulatory shifts that could materialize with minimal notice. While adaptability is a hallmark of the cannabis sector, the question arises: At what point does this fluidity become a whirlpool of uncertainty, making navigation not just challenging but perilous for smaller players?
A proposal that has caught my eye, and admittedly raised an eyebrow, is the move towards stricter compliance measures, particularly the requirement for cannabis business owners to provide certificates of compliance. On its face, this push for adherence to municipal codes and building safety regulations is unarguably crucial. However, it's essential to scrutinize the underlying implications—could these measures inadvertently erect barriers for fledgling enterprises, favoring more financially buoyant operators capable of navigating the bureaucratic labyrinth?
The notion of a tiered fee structure ostensibly aims to democratize the industry, offering a lifeline to smaller businesses struggling to compete with larger counterparts. While the intent is commendable, the devil, as they say, is in the details. The effectiveness of such a structure hinges on its implementation—will it truly level the playing field, or will it morph into another hurdle for small businesses to leap over?
Patient access and consumer safety are, rightly, paramount. Extending the validity of medical marijuana licenses and tightening packaging and labeling requirements reflect a commitment to these principles. Yet, there's an undercurrent of apprehension about how these regulations will be enacted. Will they genuinely serve patients' best interests, or could they inadvertently restrict access through overzealous regulation?
The proposal granting municipalities the power to implement their inspection programs introduces a potential patchwork of standards. This decentralization could complicate compliance for businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions. It's a double-edged sword—on one hand, catering to local needs; on the other, potentially muddying the regulatory waters.
As we stand at this crossroads, the conversation around these proposed changes isn't just about policy —it's a broader debate about the future of cannabis in Oklahoma. It's a dialogue about balancing the scales between ensuring safety and compliance, nurturing industry growth, and maintaining patient access. The emphasis on regulation, while necessary, must not lose sight of the industry's pioneering spirit and the need for equitable access.
In contemplating the path forward, it's crucial for stakeholders to voice their concerns and participate actively in shaping a regulatory environment that reflects the diverse needs and realities of the Oklahoma cannabis community. The goal should be clear—not just to regulate for the sake of regulation but to foster an industry that is safe, accessible, and thriving. As we tread this tightrope between progress and overreach, let's ensure that the spirit of innovation and access that has defined the cannabis movement continues to light our way forward.

People easily jump on the hamster wheel into the world of over the counter meds, that we’re told help us feel better, faster. Maybe it’s how you grew up and what you were taught. Take a moment and look at the ingredients in DayQuill & NyQuill. Google them. It might be a little scary. Let’s shake things up a bit and ask questions.
