When an
Angel Sings Written by Kristen Nadel CONTRIBUTOR
The resilience of a 12-year-old girl can certainly be impressive. This is a key time in life when opinions are formed and many life lessons are learned. Katelyn Stephens was a vibrant girl with a personality that can only be described as feisty. She was outspoken about all that mattered to her because she had such a big heart, and she was not afraid to tell it like it was for the benefit of those around her. A gifted singer, Katelyn sang at her church, was a part of her school choir, and played the clarinet and piano. Just like other kids her age, she was filled with wide-eyed curiosity and motivation to make an impact on the world—This is exactly what she did. As her mother spoke of her, it was very clear that Katelyn left an impression on anyone who crossed her path. Elizabeth Rice fondly describes her daughter’s demeanor, talking about the use of the word “seriously?” When Katelyn perceived a question as trite, she would utter the phrase with an honest sentiment. It was very clear that Katelyn was raised to speak her mind, and this made both of her parents very proud of her.
A Time of Change
Katelyn was more than a cancer patient, which she was diagnosed with in June of 2018. Most 12-year-old girls have middle school on the brain, trying to fit in and figuring out how to navigate the new complexities ahead that are riddled with hormonal changes. Ewing's Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, was the official diagnosis that Katelyn received. This form of cancer can often disguise itself as growing pains, a completely normal part of tween evolution. In a matter of seconds, life changed entirely for Katelyn and her loving family.
After receiving the cancer diagnosis, a treatment plan was implemented immediately. This particular form of cancer can be very aggressive, and it was apparent in Katelyn’s case that this was true. By the time she was diagnosed, it had spread to every single bone in her body. The doctors were not able to pick up on it sooner because it does not show up on x-rays. It is also unlikely for a doctor to order an MRI on a child, so this was never done for Katelyn. The date of diagnosis was significant for obvious reasons, but it also ignited her mother’s determination to seek help for her daughter. With her chance of survival at only 15%, Katelyn did not back down. She immediately knew that she wanted to fight as hard as she could, and her parents supported her every step of the way. This was a period of time when the family bonded together and became stronger than ever. Katelyn was started on six different chemotherapies at once to combat the aggressive illness. Each one of these treatments required her to be inpatient, which meant that the family was starting to spend more time at the hospital than at their own home. Elizabeth is no stranger to caring for a sick child. Her older son, Draven, was already diagnosed with Crohn's disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease. He had spent time inside the very same hospital that Katelyn was now frequenting. Because of the complexities of her type of cancer, they were not able to catch it soon enough. Understandably, Elizabeth did not know what to do. Both of her children were sick, and the hardships seemed to keep piling up relentlessly. Still, Katelyn was a fighter through and through, so the treatment was the only logical next step to take.
6
There were times during the treatment when Katelyn’s immune system plummeted due to the chemo, and she ended up developing infections. Despite all of these hardships, she never complained. Instead, she took to creativity to find respite. Already a musically inclined girl, Katelyn received a ukulele as a gift. She proceeded to teach herself how to play, and she started to create music that she wrote entirely on her own. This was her way of expressing herself as she went through the countless days that turned into weeks inside hospital rooms.
Family Resilience
In times of distress, kindness is often the only thing that makes the burden any easier. Because of The Toby Keith Foundation, the family was able to have access to housing closer to the hospital in Oklahoma City, which was around three hours away from their Roland home. The foundation housed the family, giving them access to many different resources at no cost to them. Elizabeth is very thankful for this because it helped to alleviate at least a fraction of the stress that was suddenly placed on the family. This foundation works with the hospital to provide these resources to families in need with sick children. It is a large facility with many helpful options that Toby Keith takes the time to visit himself. Because he has just fought cancer, his passion for helping others in similar situations is evident. This lifestyle became normal for the family, and they adapted as needed for survival. Elizabeth’s husband ended up taking on two jobs, and she left hers to become a full-time caregiver for their daughter. Thankfully, the children did not often need to be hospitalized at the same time. There was only one instance that Elizabeth can recall where Draven had to receive treatment for his Chron’s at the same time Katelyn was receiving treatment for her cancer. It was very apparent that this family was not going to give up.
Unwavering Faith
There was one moment Elizabeth recalled through tears, explaining that Katelyn only complained once during all of her countless cancer treatments. Things were getting incredibly difficult, and she was tired of fighting. There was a point where she did not feel she wanted to continue living. Her parents held her tight to comfort her and, the next day, the family attended church together. This service was exactly what Katelyn needed to hear. She turned to her mom and proclaimed, “Mom, that was for me.” Elizabeth encouraged her daughter that it was absolutely beautiful to hold onto her faith and receive this message as strongly as she felt it that morning in the church. Katelyn went on to pick up her ukelele and write an entire song that she titled “Riptide.” The writing process only took Katelyn 30 minutes, as it seemed the melody and lyrics just flowed from her. Tapping into her inspiration from earlier that morning and the tenacity she expressed on a daily basis fighting her illness, she composed a beautiful tune that can be heard on Elizabeth’s TikTok page (couponingwithcooper). Thanks to The Toby Keith Foundation, Katelyn was given access to a recording studio during this time where she was able to bring her song to life. A professional recording was made of the track.
Full Circle
Katelyn passed away on March 16, 2019. Her fight lasted eight months, and she was strong every step of the way. Being a cannabis user is something Elizabeth deems very important and wishes that her daughter was able to be treated with some of the very same cannabis products that are helping cancer patients today. At that time, Rick Simpson Oil was not available for Katelyn. The doctors did not know enough about it, and there were accessibility issues that made it impossible for Katelyn to begin this treatment. Given the success rates of RSO use in cancer treatment now, Elizabeth firmly believes this could have helped her daughter. The hardest battles are given to the strongest warriors because this family was still facing hardships after the loss of their beautiful daughter. Draven became very sick after Katelyn passed away, and he was in need of an ileostomy to have his large bowels completely removed. Just three months later, Elizabeth also became sick. She was in need of a colostomy and ended up in the hospital at the height of the Covid pandemic. After both Draven and Elizabeth had their procedures, they used cannabis to help with pain and recovery. Elizabeth notes that she went from taking handfuls of pills each day to only taking one pill and using cannabis to help with her process. It was an amazing improvement that she holds cannabis accountable for helping her to achieve.
7
Life-Changing Medicine
After Elizabeth’s recovery and still grieving her daughter’s passing, she needed to return to work. This proved to be a challenge because many employers turned her away due to her cannabis use. This was until she came across a large cannabis processing factory in Oklahoma City. Elizabeth was taken on as a sales rep and cannot express enough how much she loves her job. Given her history, she is a big proponent of cannabis medicine and the importance of cannabis education. Through her work, she gets to help others in situations where people feel they have no other options. “I live to tell her story,” Elizabeth poignantly explains. She maintains a connection with Cancer House in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. If there are patients in need of cannabis cancer treatment, Elizabeth helps make this possible by providing them with the resources necessary to get this help from Cancer House. She is the true embodiment of what it means to never stop fighting, and it is clear she is continuing to honor her daughter by implementing the same passion for life that Katelyn was filled with. At the time of Katelyn’s fight with cancer, there were other mothers in the hospital asking for cannabis treatment, but none of them were able to get it. Now, children are able to have access to this lifesaving treatment as more education is present. Elizabeth believes that cannabis education is crucial and can help so many people with the correct use. She fondly tells stories about her daughter and the amazing person she was. It is her passion to help others who are fighting cancer and any other autoimmune-based illness that could benefit from using cannabis. Allowing yourself to continue living your life after a loved one passes is almost as debilitating as the trauma experienced from the loss. Elizabeth’s husband got her a service dog since Katelyn passed who she speaks fondly of. His name is Cooper, and this is where her TikTok username comes from. She began couponing as a way to get out of the house and took Cooper with her everywhere she went. Today, Elizabeth is a pillar of strength and will always do her part to honor the incredible memory of Katelyn and all that she accomplished in a life that was far too short. I was lucky enough to have a sit down with this creator of peasantry to get the inside look. In the vibrant world of cannabis culture, Bufo Glass stands out as an awardwinning artisan known for his innovative and deeply personal glass art. His creations are not just tools for consumption but are artistic expressions deeply embedded in the ethos of cannabis use. "I was 21 when I started in glass art," Bufo Glass recalls, attributing his inspiration to a renaissance faire. This early exposure sparked his lifelong passion for creating pieces specifically for cannabis use. "Animals and their evolution have always fascinated me," he shares, explaining the natural themes often found in his work. Bufo Glass’s approach is both intuitive and spontaneous. "I make each piece for myself first, piecing it together part by part," he says. This organic process results in unique pieces, each with a story and character of its own. Functionality is key in Bufo Glass's creations. "My dad was a pipe maker for tobacco," he explains, which influenced his understanding of the importance of a well-crafted pipe. His pieces serve as daily tools and conversation pieces, a blend of practicality and beauty. Bufo Glass believes his work plays a significant role in the cannabis culture. "We are finding new, better, cool ways to fully experience cannabis," he states, emphasizing the importance of his art in enhancing the cannabis experience. The artist acknowledges the challenges in his field, from market fluctuations to the fragility of glass. Welcome to Quality
By James Bridges
Item #9 stands out as a brand that masterfully combines quality products with strategic visibility. With its inviting slogan "Welcome to Quality," Item #9 is not just another cannabis brand; it's a statement of excellence and a commitment to delivering an unparalleled experience to its customers. Unlike many brands that rely solely on either product quality or marketing prowess, Item #9 strikes a unique balance. It recognizes the importance of making its presence known in a crowded market while ensuring that its products live up to the promise made by its impactful slogan. Item #9's approach to pricing is a critical aspect of its appeal. By optimizing operational efficiencies through vertical integration, the brand manages to offer high-quality products at prices that defy the usual quality-cost correlation in the cannabis market. This strategy not only makes premium quality cannabis products more accessible but also challenges the industry norms. The company's vision and drive comes from none other than owner and operator, Shawn Khodadad. I was fortunate enough to get some insight:
16
Q: What first sparked your interest in the cannabis industry, and how did this evolve into the idea for Item #9? My interest in the cannabis industry was initially ignited by the scientific complexity and potential of cannabis as a plant. As a chemical engineer, I was fascinated by the intricate processes involved in cannabis extraction and the myriad of ways its components could be utilized. This curiosity grew as I observed the burgeoning legal cannabis market and its untapped potential for innovative products. - Q: Who were your early influences or mentors in this field, and how did they shape your vision? In the early stages of my career in the cannabis industry, I was fortunate to have mentors and influences who were pioneers in cannabis extraction and product innovation. One key mentor was a seasoned chemist who had been experimenting with cannabis long before it became mainstream. Their deep understanding of the plant's chemistry and passion for exploring its potential was infectious. They taught me to look beyond the conventional uses of cannabis and to understand its components at a molecular level. - Q: Can you discuss your educational background or professional experiences that prepared you for running a cannabis extract lab? Absolutely. My educational journey laid the foundation for my venture into the cannabis industry. As a chemical engineering major with a minor in business administration, I gained a solid grounding in both the technical and commercial aspects of running a business. The rigorous training in chemical engineering, particularly in areas like process design, thermodynamics, and chemical reactions, was directly applicable to understanding and innovating in cannabis extraction processes. My professional experiences further honed my skills and prepared me for running Item #9. Starting with my initial ambition to enter the Oil and Gas field, I developed a strong skill set in handling complex industrial processes, which is surprisingly analogous to cannabis extraction in many ways. The downturn in the oil industry was a blessing in disguise, as it led me to pivot to the cannabis sector.
- Q: How did you navigate the shift from concept to reality in establishing your business? Transitioning Item #9 from concept to reality involved several key steps.
- Q: How did you overcome these early challenges, and what lessons did you learn from them? Navigating regulatory compliance in the cannabis industry required us to stay informed and adaptable, First, we developed a practical in-depth understanding of business plan, grounded in extensive involving the legal landscape, consultations market research and a clear with legal experts, and participation understanding of Oklahoma's in industry workshops and seminars. cannabis industry regulations. - Q: How did you go about building the Item #9 brand, and what strategies did you use to establish its reputation in the market? Building the Item #9 brand required a focused strategy centered around quality, innovation, and education, with the aim of making Item #9 a byword for excellence and reliability in the cannabis industry. A key aspect of our strategy was highlighting the high quality and innovative nature of our products. We showcased our unique extraction processes, the scientific expertise that goes into our products, and our dedication to creating safe, effective, and consistently excellent cannabis products. We ensured that each product released under the Item #9 label adhered to strict quality standards. Another vital component was engaging with the community. We actively participated in local events, supported causes important to the community, and formed collaborations with local businesses. These efforts helped us establish a strong local presence and cultivate a loyal customer base. Additionally, we placed great importance on gathering and responding to customer feedback through our Instagram and SMS channels. This practice not only allowed us to continually enhance our products and customer service but also demonstrated our commitment to meeting and exceeding our customers' needs and expectations. - Q: Can you share a story about a moment when you felt that Item #9 had truly made its mark in the industry? A defining moment of recognition for our impact in the industry occurred during a cannabis event at the OKC Farmers Market, where we hosted a booth. It was incredibly rewarding to have numerous people visit and express that they had tried our products. Hearing firsthand that we offer some of the smoothest vapes they've ever experienced was a profound moment. Being heavily involved in the lab, dedicating countless hours to research and development, and often working late into the night, it's easy to be insulated from the direct consumer experience. It was these face-to-face interactions with people outside of the lab that truly highlighted the impact and success of our extensive efforts in product development.

- Q: Are there any decisions or paths you would have approached differently, knowing what you know now? Hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back, I would have engaged even more actively in networking, forming strategic partnerships and alliances earlier in our journey. Building a robust network is crucial in any industry, especially one as dynamic as cannabis. Another approach I may have tried differently is to have a strong online presence. In today’s digital age, this is essential. For the last two years since our inception, we have relied solely on worth of mouth marketing and letting our quality product sell itself. While it has been a success for us and got us to where we are today, we did notice a few out-of-state brands appear and rapidly grow with their flashy marketing campaigns and budgets. - Q: Based on your journey, what key advice would you offer someone just starting in the cannabis industry? Anticipate and prepare for the unique financial challenges of the cannabis industry, including the often limited access to traditional banking services. It's essential to have a strong financial buffer to navigate these uncertainties. Equally important is staying true to your vision and values. Remember, the cannabis industry extends beyond mere business; it plays a significant role in promoting wellness and contributing to a broader cultural shift. Your passion and commitment in this field can create substantial impact. Entering the cannabis industry is more than just a business endeavor; it's an exciting and rewarding journey that requires diligence, adaptability, and a relentless commitment to continuous learning and improvement. For me, it has evolved into a true passion, making every day enjoyable and fulfilling. I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

- Q: What do you wish someone had told you when you were starting out? Being better prepared for the societal and business stigma attached to cannabis would have greatly aided in handling various professional interactions. Equally crucial is selecting the right business partner. It's essential to have someone who's not only willing to put in long hours, often 12-16 hours a day, or even stay on-site during the initial stages, but also fully commits to the venture. A partner who doesn't invest 100% of their effort can be incredibly detrimental in a challenging field like the cannabis industry. Furthermore, the significance of selfcare in this demanding sector cannot be overstated. It's easy to become engulfed in the heavy workload and face burnout. I've learned the importance of allowing myself and our team to take necessary off days. Prioritizing well-being has resulted in increased productivity, focus, and overall better morale in our workplace.
At the heart of Item #9's strategy is its focus on customer satisfaction. The brand believes in creating a loyal customer base through positive experiences and word-of-mouth testimonials. This focus on customer engagement extends beyond the product itself, encompassing a comprehensive service experience. Item #9's commitment to excellence is evident in its extensive customer services. Offering statewide delivery without relying on third-party services ensures that customers enjoy a seamless and direct experience. This approach not only enhances customer satisfaction but also strengthens the brand's connection with its clientele. The brand also extends its reach through white labeling opportunities, inviting other businesses to collaborate in delivering quality products. This facet of their operation allows for a broader market reach and fosters partnerships within the cannabis industry. Item #9 invites everyone to experience a brand that stands for more than just high-quality cannabis products. It represents a commitment to making quality accessible and ensuring that each customer's experience is as refined as the products they purchase. Item #9 is a shining example of how a cannabis brand can excel by combining high-quality products, effective market visibility, and a strong focus on customer satisfaction. In a market filled with competition, Item #9 stands out by offering an experience that is not just about consuming a product but about being part of a community that values quality, accessibility, and genuine engagement.

I have always been a huge advocate for organic, sun-grown cannabis. As you know for really good sun-grown, it's about genetics and the farmer. The significance of sun-grown, organic practices worldwide have always had prominence, particularly in light of the plant's unique ability to act as a phytoremediator and a bioaccumlator.Sungrown organic cannabis is cultivated outdoors or greenhouse, harnessing natural sunlight and abstaining from synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. Which overall means cleaner and safer cannabis for the people using it, for you, your family and the planet.
Understanding the Importance of Clean Medicine Written by Dr. Pepper Hernandez ND, Ph.D., CTC CONTRIBUTOR
The importance of this approach is multifaceted when it comes to why sun-grown is overall better for humans and the environment: Environmentally Friendly: Sun-grown cannabis significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with indoor cultivation, which often demands substantial energy consumption for lighting and climate control. Moreover, organic farming practices foster soil health and biodiversity. Health and Safety: By choosing organic cannabis, consumers safeguard themselves against potential harm from residues of pesticides and other chemicals used in conventional growing methods. Quality and Flavor: Advocates argue that sun-grown cannabis boasts a superior flavor profile compared to its indoor counterparts. Natural sunlight and outdoor conditions can massively enhance the plant's terpene & cannabinoid profile, influencing aroma and taste. The high lasts much longer than indoor-grown cannabis flowers. While the advantages of sun-grown organic cannabis are apparent let’s get more into the plants' synergy with the soil. In the phytoremediation aspect of cannabis, this property highlights the plant's ability to absorb and accumulate contaminants from the environment. Phytoremediation involves using certain plants, including cannabis, to mitigate soil, water, or air pollution. Cannabis, with its extensive root system and rapid growth, excels at absorbing heavy metals and toxins from the soil or growing medium. This is exactly why you do not want to use chemicals in the soil or on the plant. Understanding cannabis as a bioaccumulator sheds light on the importance of choosing sun-grown organic cannabis and products derived from it. The bioaccumulation property means that cannabis can absorb elements and compounds from the environment. All in all, the decision to choose sun-grown, organic, cannabis extends beyond personal preferences, encompassing environmental responsibility, community support, and consumer well-being. Patients play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future for the cannabis industry through their choices and preferences. So start simple, start small and grow your own. The Feminine Divine
Kayla Wheeler WRITTEN BY: BRANNAN BELL CONTRIBUTOR
Meet Kayla. Born in sunny San Diego, California, she’s the youngest child out of seven children. With two sisters and four brothers, Kayla was referred to as the “miracle child”. Her mother had a tubal pregnancy after her sister was born that ended up damaging her fallopian tubes and the doctors said that there was a 98.9% chance that she wouldn’t have children again. Fast forward to seven years later, Kayla’s little spirit entered in with a strong will to be here. Growing up with parents who were quite miserable with each other and constantly arguing, her childhood wasn’t a smooth one. They divorced when she was five years old. With her dad having custody over her and her sister, with the older siblings moving out of the house, she learned some hard lessons as a kid from her father who was a tough shelled man. Lessons that stuck out to her were things like, “Nobody is your friend. Everyone is out for themselves. Don’t rely on anything unless it’s solid in your hand. Everyone lies and the world is a cold hearted place”. As a young girl, Kayla felt the need to question him trying to understand how every single person in the world was all possibly the same and that crooked. She expresses that her parents weren’t angels and they played their part in a world of biker gangs and drug dealing. As much as she feels like her parents try to hide it, she can still feel the rippling effects of her family’s ancestral baggage. Her father did her best to raise well mannered, well equipped young ladies, always providing food and shelter. When she was twelve, her dad chose to move them out to the High Desert in California. She describes it as a beautiful lake, in the middle of the desert, just down the road from the infamous Lake Dolores water park. Spending time there, she experienced an exciting life as a teenager. She loved to ride quads with the neighbors, wakeboard, horseback ride, fish, etc. Remembering her 16th birthday well, Kayla was allowed to have a live band play at her party and the lake community joined in for the celebration. She expresses that music and marijuana have both been big contributing factors in her life with who she is today. Kayla is truly blessed for every lesson and opportunity that has been presented to her. Using other peoples examples and stories, she decided who she wanted to be and what that influence looked like. She saw both the positive and negative side of things and tends to question everything, which is never a bad thing.

There are always two sides, good and bad, light and dark, day and night. As a person, Kayla believes that it’s up to us individually to decide how we want to live, who we want to be and how we choose to treat other people. You can either let the bad destroy you or you can choose to rise above and choose better for yourself and the life you want to live. Moving out at the age of seventeen, Joshua Tree is really where her life began and the one place she feels like she manifested a few years before. It’s a crazy feeling to take a step back and realize that you contributed to making something happen in your life that you’ve dreamed of before. Growing up and hearing the term, ‘jack of all trades and a master of none’, is something that she feels like suits her, while she’s always learning something new. Her hobbies range from photography, painting, crafting dream catchers, reading tarot cards, playing with fire, aerial skills, outdoor activities, dancing, singing and more! She personally loves to say that she’s a jack of all trades and a master of FUN. With the entire universe inspiring her with colors, shapes, people, places and things, she really enjoys inspiring others to create something beautiful of their own. Kayla has been a Cannabis Cultivator at Ashlocks farm in Oklahoma, for two years now. She’s been involved with the cultivation of the plant since she was eighteen, with experience in working with commercial grows, underground grows, greenhouse grows and much more. Opening up a bag of brick weed when she was fourteen, she was intrigued to understand how it grew. Without even realizing it, she set her whole future in motion with that one small fleeting thought.
At the age of eighteen, Kayla had met her first group of underground cultivators, that were the original plugs. By this time, she had acquired a taste for the finer, hard to find, top shelf “chronic” that people spoke so highly of, which was rare back then. This type of weed was not easy to come by and the people involved were not blue collar people. Feeling like she rides the waves of life, like the currents of the ocean, it has taken her and is still taking her everywhere she’s needed to be at just the right moments. Not necessarily always wanting to be a cannabis cultivator, it was just kind of in her nature, like it was what she was meant to do. There was a chunk of time where Kayla moved to New York, feeling lost and not knowing what she wanted to do. After seeing it went legal in Oklahoma, she had a job within 2 days of moving here in 2020. It wasn't until she had been through a couple places, when she really found where she belonged, at Ashlocks Farm! She describes this place as a real community of people, all working together to do amazing things, for not only the patients, but other companies and business owners too! Feeling so blessed in the position she’s in, Kayla gets to grow craft cannabis for the people and likes to think that her vibes truly emit themselves through her plants. When the patients inhale the bud grown at Ashlocks Farm, they will feel a euphoric and spirit lifting feeling rush over them, passing on a little of her own special light through every plant.
