It is nice to see so many members coming out and supporting the club’s dining options and special events.
I hope everyone is enjoying our new Palmetto Hall Golf & Country Club website that was rolled out last month. I like to call it “one-stop shopping.” You can now review your statement, make a payment, book a tee time, see the calendar of events, and make reservations for dining and special events.
With these new upgraded capabilities, I encourage you to please make reservations for dining through the portal on the website. It will only help the food and beverage staff prepare and serve you better.

Rob Ciapanna General ManagerOne of the questions that I am receiving a lot of lately is, why isn’t the grass green or why isn’t the grass growing? Well, let’s discuss. We have hybrid bermudagrass on our tees, fwys, roughs and greens. Now I know what you are thinking, the greens are green. You are correct, they are. That has a lot to do with the height at which we mow them, shorter turf greens up faster, think less leaf tissue to turn green Now the fwys and rough specifically are trying to turn green but these cold nights and the frost that we just had 2 weeks ago, set us back. Bermudagrass doesn’t start actively growing until soil temperatures reach 65 degrees F. Bermudagrass needs lots of sun and warm weather. “But can’t you fertilize it to make it green?” Yes you can but with the weather and cold temps that we have had are slowing things down, and if I put out a fertilizer application with some of the cold weather, it would be a waste of money. So, we try to be patient. We are currently only mowing fwys and roughs on an as needed basis But starting next week, we will drop the height of our roughs to 1 5”, this will help us take off the winter “fluff” and get elp us green up faster Believe me, I want anyone but in this situation, patience is a r mowers to be out and the grass to be ope to see everyone on the course!

We can explore various physical aspects of the game both on and off the course. But perhaps the best opportunity to advance our skills comes from within? This month we will talk about Mental Practice
Mental practice is the cognitive rehearsal of physical activity in the absence of any observable muscular movement. Through mental practice, students can recreate previous experiences from memory and shape them in meaningful ways, or picture new events to prepare themselves for an upcoming physical performance
Jack Nicklaus (1974) claimed that his good shots were 50% mental picture, 40% setup and stance, and 10% swing In an interview, he described his mental practice and imagery process immediately before playing each shot as follows: “I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. It’s like a color movie. First I ‘see’ the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes and I ‘see’ the ball going there: its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is sort of a fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the previous images into reality. These home movies are a key to my concentration and to my positive approach to every shot ” This technique is proven in various sports as the fastest way to improve By seeing yourself (internal imagery) performing, you are able to rehearse your swing I do this every day: some folks count sheep to go to sleep, I play golf I never get past the 3rd hole, and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz When I engage in mental practice, I not only visualize what my body is doing- hitting those technique checkpoints, but I feel what those checkpoints are like within my motor sensory perception.
I mentally rehearse each swing at 30% in my mind, paying strict attention to the feelings, and then rehearse again at performance speed. And I rarely hit a bad shot in my mental practice sessions. I also sleep like a baby!
Give this exercise an honest try. With a little work, you also will better define what your game is, what you may have difficulty with in the physical can be overcome in the mental.
