At the July Social, I had the privilege of taking pictures for the Around the Clubhouse. I say it is a privilege because moving from table to table allows me to meet new members and/or members that I had not met At one interesting table, I was shocked to learn that a
young lady had been a member of our club for 31 years, which in turn inspired this month’s article.
As a relative “newbie of four years”, I always thought of legacy members as those lucky enough or foolish enough to join the Club for Life
Although we are still compiling some data, it was easy to confirm we have several individuals and families that have been members for 25 plus years A big Thank YOU to our real Legacy members that have paved the path, supported and shaped this club for years. Thank YOU to those that served as past members of the board, chaired golfing, and racquet committees, or simply supported the club by being frequent golfers, racquet enthusiasts, and diners You don’t just become a good club overnight, and there are a lot of us “newbies” that feel fortunate to share in the culture and club you helped create!
This month I am pleased to recognize two of those founding members - Don and Linda Muehlberger. Don and Linda became non-resident members in 1973 and permanent resident members in 1994
50-year members – Don & Linda at the Club’s 1974 Holiday Gala

We hope to see you at the upcoming Heritage Invitational Golfing Member/Guest tournament September 21st to 23rd as well as the Racquet Member/Guest October 20th and 21st! Thanks in advance to the committees working to make those a continued success!
In the meantime, the club and restaurant are a great place to stay hydrated and “cool off” with a nice meal while enjoying some live music. As always, this is your club. Please let me and/or my fellow board members know if you have a suggestion or concern - as WE want to see you Around the Clubhouse!

We kick off
Plan now to attend and please remember to register online for the event. It is still a great deal at only $10 per person.
We continue the fun on August 21st with our popular Asian Night dinner. Chef Curtis has prepared an outstanding Asian menu for $32 per person. Entrees include a varied selection of shrimp, chicken, and beef dishes as well as rice and noodles. See the full menu in the e-blasts. Complementary Saki will be served with dinner. We will be dining indoors at tables of 6 or 8. RSVP below with your table-mates names.
A few notes on our September events. Our September Monthly Members Social will be canceled due to Labor Day. Our annual Heritage Member-Guest event will take place in September filling the calendar. Our normal social events schedule will resume in October.
See you Around The Club!
AnneGreetings… believe it or not, the Heritage Invitational Member-Guest Tournament is right around the corner. As Golf Chair, I have been tasked to organize the event. The good news is I have help - a few very talented, inspired people are involved, creating what I believe will be a first-class and super fun event!
In trying to put together the best tournament possible (all within a very tight budget), we’re working hard to create an event that will both honor our past champions and provide a spark for new members and players to join in the future Let me expand on this…
2010: Don Whitaker / Dinny Cuthbertson
2011: Doug Waldrop / Amy Brown
2012: Don Muehlberger / Sophie Burger
2013: Roger Penny / Peter Zych / Heather Garmston
2014: Don Muehlberger / Bill Burger / Heather Garmston
2015: John Robinson / Dennis Lauzon / Mary Zych
2016: Don Muehlberger / Mary Zych
2017: Don Muehlberger
2018: Rick D’Arienzo
2019: Lanny Bailey
2020: Jim Stauffer
2021: Don Muehlberger
2022: Bill Whalen
In the early years, there was no playoff, so the flight winners were considered the champs And note, no lady players since the 2016 event If there is an incentive for both males and females to sign up this year and play their hearts out, getting your name on the above list has to be a top consideration.
For the Saturday night finale, our past included a black tie sit down dinner, with music provided by a band. With budget constraints and a population moving towards a more laidback lifestyle, the finale has been reconfigured this year to more of an open party atmosphere To help create a festive environment and meet costs, the golfers and significant others participating in the tournament may be joined by PRPC members who are not playing in the event. My hope is to bring all PRPC members together to join in celebrating and congratulating this year’s winners.
While the Heritage Invitational is a top priority now, there are a few other golfing events that are being planned that everyone should be aware of. The Pro Shop will be organizing a day for the Ladies similar to the Men’s monthly Super Men’s Day. The day selected is Wednesday, November 8th. Please mark your calendars now and look for more information coming in the fall. The event will be a scramble with teams selected in ABCD format - this means you sign up and get selected to a team based on your handicap. This helps keep the competition fair and also means players will most likely have to play with people they don’t normally play with. Very fun!
There is money remaining in the 2023 PRPC budget that will go towards food and prizes for the event And what do we call this day? Since we already have, “Super Men’s Day,” Mary Grace Tabb suggested, "Wonder Women’s Day!" Absolutely love this.
Two more events we are trying to organize are an offshoot from the Mixed League (couples golf), that ended in June In August, we are looking to set up a home and away Mixed Golf competition versus Palmetto Hall. This event will have couples from Port Royal traveling to Palmetto Hall and playing the twoperson scramble format with couples from Palmetto Hall in the field as well. One week later, we will do the same thing but have the competition here at Port Royal and have couples from Palmetto Hall visit Port Royal.
We are still in the planning stages for this competition, but I’m hopeful we can make this work on two consecutive Thursdays in August. I’m thinking we come up with a catchy name for the event - how about the “Rusch” Cup?
The last event we are trying to organize is being targeted for an early Saturday in December. It is a one-day Couples Member-Guest that will have couples from Port Royal bringing in couples from outside the club to play as a fourperson team. The format will most likely be the best ball and will have a score for the lady players combined with a score for the men players to determine the winning team.
All three events sound like fun to me Hopefully, we’ll have great enthusiasm and a great turnout.
Till next time, Guy
Super Men’s Day Saturday, July 15th
Instead of our traditional Wednesday play we scheduled a Saturday SMD play in an effort to accommodate members who are still working Turnout was slightly down but still good. We had nine foursomes competing in our mid-year Summer Scramble. Each player was held to a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 drives
Lanny Bailey (2023 YTD Champions Cup Point leader) captained his team to another 2023 SMD Win. With a winning net score of 55, big Congrats to the team of John Simpson, Lanny Bailey, Charlie Leadingham & Keith Swinehart.
Two teams tied for first place in the 2023 British Open / Port Royal Heritage Sweeps. It looked like two Englishman, our own Nigel Jones and Alex Fitzpatrick, were going to run away with the competition when Birmingham England’s, Nigel Jones, shot a 77 gross (68 net in his 3rd round). However, USA’s Scottie Scheffler’s 4 under 67 on Sunday’s round was enough to move Dave “Melo” Chmielowiec’s team up the leaderboard from 3rd place to a tie for first place Both teams carded a score of 141 Jones is looking like a sure Captain’s pick for the upcoming Ryder Cup.
August Events:
Wednesday August 9th: Super Men’s Day
Thursday August 17th: Nine & Dine
September Events:
Ryder Cup: Thursday September 7th Cookout. Round 1: Saturday, September 9th. Round 2: Wednesday September 13th
Thursday, September 14th: Nine & Dine
Wednesday, September 20 – Saturday, September 23: Heritage Invitational Member-Guest.
Please Remember:
In this heat, Hydrate before your round, don’t wait until you are thirsty & dehydrated
Fix your divots and pitch marks
Rake the bunkers, and leave them in better shape than you found them
Post all your 9-hole and 18-hole rounds
Ladies, just a few rule refreshers this month.
Example 1:
On Robbers Row, the 4th hole, a par 3 with a lagoon and sand trap running the length of the left side Striving for straight but avoiding all the left side trouble the ball goes right, hits the cart path, and rolls across the street out of bounds. Uh-oh, the worst penalty; stroke and distance The ball may be re-hit from the tee (counting 3) or the new rules (hoping to increase the pace of play) say the ball may be carried to grass and hit from that point counting as a 4th shot.
On Barony the 14th hole, par 3, has a big pond which apparently has grown in size we have aged. It does not matter if the b hits the ground on the other side and the rolls back into the water, the hazard has been negotiated If it stays where it is possible to hit it then it is a nice break an is the 2nd shot. If the ball is a swimmer it may be moved to the drop zone (but not teed) hitting 3.
Example 3:
Roots and our (18 ladies) root rule. The many glorious trees we have on our courses occasionally cause us to avoid injury by moving the ball 1 club length (you may use your driver if necessary), no closer to the hole. A friend once pointed out there were no roots in the middle of the fairway. Perhaps she has not seen "ALL" of each hole as I have. Have fun, stay cool and be happy we are not in Phoenix!
June 22 was a washout
A warm welcome to Phyllis Facterman, Alison Cross, Claudia Aller & Sarah Fanjul! This brings our group to 39!
June 29 was a Scramble followed by 16 ladies having a delicious lunch together.
July 6 was the Low Putt contest.
Joan Hazel won with 15 putts!
Judi Chmielowiec, Jackie Darling, and Rhonda Heuple are all tied with 16.
Our Queen of the Green, Jo Ann Gibbs, had a chip-in on Hole 5!
Congratulations to all the golfers who played in the heat and completed 9!
On July 13, we played individual stroke play on Barony
Julie Delaurence was our winner!
Second place went to Sue Walker with a 35.
We also had 2 chip in winners:
Arlene Jenkinson with a chip-in on #6 and Linda Maloney on #8.
We also had a group of 4 ladies that all got a 4 on #6!!
Despite the heat and humidity, we had 14 players complete the round!
On July 20 on Robbers Row:
First Place Tie:
Carroll Lindseth, Net 23
Tammie Blank, Net 23
Second Place Tie:
Sue Walker, Net 24
Lisa Adamsky, Net 24
No chip-ins to report, however, there was a birdie on hole #8 by Lisa
The dates are October 20-21. Our program includes a sit down dinner on Friday evening the 20th and a courtside continental breakfast and tournament play on Saturday morning. The tennis committee is working with Jim our F&B manager and Chef Curtis on creating a seasonal dinner menu that will coincide with the fall festive time. This is our biggest event of the year for pickleball and tennis racquet members and we are looking to make this our largest one ever. Start planning and secure your guest co-player. We hope to have both men’s and woman’s tennis at intermediate and high levels and pickleball at member request. (Women, Men, Mixed) If you are having trouble finding a partner, reach out to Dale or myself and let us know. We will get the word out to help you find a partner at your level.
Dale and the tennis committee are excited about the event. Look for flyers and more information as we decide on the meals and format.
The club is still on schedule to resurface our clay courts in the September / October time frame in time for our Member/Guest tournament. In keeping with Heritage’s desire to have best-in-class facilities we are hopeful of additional upgrades for nets and grooming tools for members to use after play available in early fall.
A new recurring feature to this article will be our pro Dale Brown’s tips for members to improve their play. Today’s tip is on:
1 2 3.

During July, members Bill Sanni and Doug Luba competed in the National Grandfather / Grandson Grass Court Championship in Boston, MA. Bill competed with his grandson Braedon and Doug with his grandson Bennett. Bill and Braedon lost the first round tough match but went on to win the back draw tournament and took home the winner’s silver tray trophy! Congratulations to the winning Sanni team and the competitive Luba team!
Finally, I believe most of you may know the long running successful show NCIS with Mark Harmon playing the role of Gibbs and his famous “Gibbs Rules”. Greatness” appeared on our 3 5 Men’s members' play courts earlier this year His vast years of playing, watching, and teaching those around him are on display most Monday and Friday mornings.
