President's Message

This past weekend, thirty members, their golfing guests, and spouses got to observe life at PRPC at its finest. The hospitality, course conditions, weather, meals, and fellowship were first-rate A huge THANKS to Jay and the Heritage staff; and to Guy Suchy, Member-Guest Chair, and his village of volunteers (planners, decorators, A shout out to the Eighteen-hole Ladies for an enjoyable Sadie Hawkins golf and lunch! This year’s event also included ladies from the 9-Holers group, and given the overall success is destined to grow next year.

dealers, markers…) for making this year’s Member-Guest such a fun event. Participation is up and I fully expect next year’s Member-Guest to be a “sellout”. Come join the fun!

Regardless of your political affiliation, I think you will be pleased with this year’s slate of Board candidates. Volunteer time and talent is what makes our club special and a big thank you to the volunteers on this year’s ballot. To keep things simple – there is only one ballot this year. In addition to voting for five new board governors, the board is requesting approval of last year’s minutes (as stipulated by our current By-laws) Copies of last year’s minutes as well as ballots and the ballot collection box will be placed on the table outside of Jay’s office in the Golf Shop.

To become official – we need 50 members in attendance or by absentee vote for the approval of our new board members and last year’s minutes So please get out and vote!

Election results will be announced at his year’s Annual meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 7th

This year’s meeting has been moved to Tuesday, to allow the staff to recover from the Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival (Nov. 3rd -5th). The Board has invited Eric Boberg, Vice President of Operations at Heritage Golf Group, to give an update on the longer-term views of our club and address member questions The Annual meeting will start at 6:30 in the Clubhouse. Hope to see you there!

On Monday evening October 16, we are holding a Lowcountry Boil and Oyster Roast. This casual event will be held on our porch, weather permitting. What a great menu…shrimp, sausage, corn, red potatoes, okra, and freshly grilled oysters. Served with cornbread, coleslaw, potato salad, and a fresh green salad and complemented with buckets of beer. This event is open seating so pull up a chair next to someone new to the club and welcome them. Back by popular demand is the fabulous steel drum musician, Dean St. Hillaire to entertain us The fun begins at 6PM All for $40 00 per person

RSVP HERE

Join us on Thursday afternoon October 19 for NINE AND DINE After 9 holes of golf join us in the member's dining room for dinner. Everything’s included in the fee golf, golf cart, and buffet dinner Sign up for this event in our pro shop

DATE CHANGE… our November Monthly Member Social will be rescheduled from November 6 to Monday, November 20 due to the annual car show falling the weekend before. Our club staff will really appreciate a break after such a busy weekend.

And mark your calendars now for Fall DJ TRIVIA on Monday, November 13. Start planning your team of 8 now so you can be ready to sign up when the notice comes out. This event sells out!

Fun Around the Club

You might notice there are more events with open seating. There are several reasons including the fact that we have many new members who may not know people to sit with. Let’s show our new members a warm southern welcome when we attend events together. In addition, we have heard feedback that the reservation system has some trouble with the assigned seating area of the RSVP form. In the past, assigned seating was easier on us, but not on our staff who did it all manually.

No worries, we will have assigned seating for TRIVIA and our HOLIDAY GALA so think about your table-mates now.

See you Around the Club!

Golf Report

Somehow, someway, the putt went in… it was downhill, really fast, about three inches left to right… in front of about 50 people. I’ll share more on the putt later, and I’ll also tell you who the winners were, but let me start by sharing some of my thoughts and feelings from the 2023 Heritage Member-Guest Invitational that ended this past weekend.

For starters, there was a tropical storm off our coast that was supposed to hit us on Thursday. Somehow, the storm stayed offshore and we enjoyed our first, glorious weekend of fall weather. Beautiful blue skies, windy (which helped keep the bugs away!), and temperatures and humidity levels were conducive for maximum outside enjoyment Perfect!

Course conditions in September are always near their peak, and for the tournament, we had lush fairways, thick rough, and the greens were at their fastest level for the year. My guest, Jim Costa, always comments about how pristine our course conditions are when he plays here. Beautiful!

Mr. Costa, as he is known in some circles, also couldn’t believe the food and service that was delivered this past weekend He will forever be talking about the dessert table that Chef Curtis put out for the Saturday night Viva Las Vegas Party I, personally, thought that the concepts, preparation, and delivery of the food all weekend were world-class. Outstanding!

Lastly, we have a very close-knit group of golfers here at Port Royal and it’s fun to play in competition with everyone. It’s even greater though to see some guests who’ve played before. We talk about past competitions and reminiscence about the, “what could have been’s.” It’s also great to meet some guests for the first time. And how special is it to have the spouses join us too? Wonderful!

Now back to the putt, it was during the Tournament Shootout on the 18th green of Robber’s Row. Blue flag. Earlier that morning, our assistant superintendent, Jim Williams, said he was going to cut the cup close to the left-hand bunker to make what’s known as a “sucker pin.” He did and it was… Challenging!

Golf Report

There were five teams in the Shootout, alternate shot format, playing No. 18 as a Par Three. Each team trying to make the low score to win the event. Off the tee, only one team hit the green in regulation The other teams struggled with pitches and chips to the difficult pin. One team did get a huge break as their tee shot embedded just off the fringe, leading to a free drop. (What was disheartening, yet somewhat funny, was from the tee hearing the collective groan from the spectators once the ball plugged into the grass ) Lucky!

Still in the hole, from the far right side of the green, Bill Taylor’s guest, Brian Reese, hit a 30+ foot putt - bending, twisting, up then down, that just missed the cup and stopped about two feet from the hole. This would have been a very makeable comeback putt for Bill for bogey Outstanding!

Jim Stauffer’s guest, Jack Leland, was the only one who hit the green off the tee. Jim had a long putt for birdie, and the ball stopped short of the hole - but that was the right play as anything past the cup from his angle would run away about six feet. Jack’s par putt was hit dead straight at the cup and just veered off slightly to the right at the end for a bogey. Suspenseful!

The winning putt came just before Jack’s near miss. The putt was tapped firmly and tracked left to right into the cup - some said it went in dead center, and others, including me, thought maybe it went in a little left of center. Didn’t matter, the putt was in for par and a victory! Magical!

While I could go on to list all the Flight Winners and all the teams who made the playoff by finishing second in their flight, the truth is everyone who played in the event this weekend was a winner. No doubt about it, the Heritage Invitational is our marquee event of the year and this year’s event did not disappoint. Superb!

Oh, and who made the winning putt and won the event? Let me say that sometimes in life we get lucky and have to remember to balance out all the bad stuff with the good. Mr. Costa’s partner was the person who made the putt and I look forward to seeing all the past winners of the Heritage Invitational at the Champion’s Dinner in December this year and future years to come. Grateful!

CLUTCH PUTT SECURES EMOTIONAL VICTORY FOR SUCHY-COSTA IN HERITAGE INVITATIONAL MEMBER-GUEST

The tears were flowing on the 18th green on Robbers Row after Guy Suchy and Jim Costa secured their dramatic victory in the recent Heritage Member-Guest Invitational

Disproving the notion that there is no crying in golf, Guy and Jim embraced after Guy’s winning 10-foot putt found the hole, and both men were overcome with emotion.

As most of the Port Royal Club membership knows, Guy, the club’s esteemed men’s golf chairman, and member-guest organizer, lost his beloved wife Gen suddenly last fall to cardiac arrest. And in 2021, Jim, a longtime friend of Guy’s from North Carolina, endured the same heartache when breast cancer claimed his wife Dawn.

Propped up by each other, their families, friends, fellow club members, and the game of golf, both men grieved and suffered and persevered for months. And then they found themselves on the cusp of victory after three days of spirited member-guest competition. When the victory was clinched, the dam burst. “I cried because the woman I love, my wife of 24-plus years and my biggest supporter, was not there to share the moment with me,” Guy said. “Jim cried, too, because his cheerleader, Dawn, wasn’t there as well I had a picture in my mind of the two of them in the crowd yelling and screaming and running up to us after we won. The wave that hit me was just too strong to suppress.”

Soon afterward, the tears were replaced by wide smiles and high-fives all around as the pair accepted congratulations from the large gallery surrounding the green. And Guy revealed that he was channeling Tiger Woods in his prime as he lined up that tricky, downhill 10-footer.

Guest Columnist

Before all of the fireworks on the final hole of the shootout, the 29 two-man teams engaged in 45 holes of match-play competition, divided into five flights. The winner and the runner-up in each flight advanced to the re-imagined playoffs, where the 10 teams squared off in an exciting alternate-shot free-forall on holes 15, 16, 17, and 18 to whittle the field to five teams. The five survivors teed it up on the 18th fairway to play the decisive final hole from roughly 135 yards.

Earlier, all teams played five nine-hole matches over three days against the other teams in their flight to determine the playoff participants. The flight winners and runners-up were as follows:

Bellagio Flight: 1. Guy Suchy and Jim Costa. 2. Lanny Bailey and Howell Kerr. MGA Grand Flight: 1. Ken Gerth and Jack Morrow. 2. Steve Shallcross and Steve Marianella.

Flamingo Flight: 1. Jim Stauffer and Jack Leland. 2. John Manfre and Peter Hyers.

Caesars Palace Flight: 1. Dave Renbarger and Tom Jackson. 2. Jim Walker and Pat McGaheran.

Stardust Flight: 1. Bill Taylor and Brian Reese. 2. Kevin Nattrass and Steven Nattrass.

Members and guests alike certainly felt right at home at Port Royal Both courses were in great shape, and players were welcomed each day by director of golf Jay Rusch and his top assistant Mary Grace Tabb. As mentioned, the food and service were off the charts, thanks to Chef Curtis and food and beverage manager Jim Henington. And how about the great decorating job Nancy Sheahan did in transforming our clubhouse into a Las Vegas casino?

Let’s not forget the wives! While the men were golfing, the ladies were also enjoying a chartered boat excursion around Broad Creek on Thursday morning and a pickleball round-robin on Saturday morning.

Guest Columnist

And yet, it all comes back to Guy Suchy, the man of the hour. Guy spent countless hours over the past months planning the entire weekend, then he executed his plan to perfection. Winning the tournament might not have been in his plan, but with Guy, anything is possible.

Any final thoughts, Mr. Chairman?

“After last year’s Member-Guest, when Gen and I knew I was going to be Golf Chair this year and responsible for the 2023 tournament, she came up with the suggestion for the Viva Las Vegas party,” said Guy. “Every big and little thing that made this year’s event special was because of her.”

Thank you Gen, and thank you, Guy.

Our Men’s Golf Committee is pleased to announce the start of a new tradition this year; The Don Muehlberger Sportsmanship Award. This award is presented to a male golfer who has a love for the game while exemplifying outstanding sportsmanship and leadership on and off the course. Over the years, Don has won many golf tournaments here at Port Royal. Don has been a member of Port Royal for 51 years. Don frequently shoots his age or better. Well deserved and big congratulations to Don!

Fix your pitch marks & divots

Rake traps

Note: The USGA recommends placing rakes outside of bunkers and away from where they are likely to interfere with play. Ideally, you don’t want to place rakes across the line of play or in a location where they could trap balls in a difficult spot.

Maintain Pace of Play, simply keep up with the group ahead of you.

Member/Guest Tournament

The dates are October 20-21. Our program includes a sit down dinner on Friday evening the 20th and a courtside continental breakfast and tournament play on Saturday morning. We have a great dinner with cocktails planned for Friday the 20th see the menu below. Our courtside buffet breakfast includes a yogurt bar, fresh fruits, granola muffins, and Danish with coffee, iced tea, OJ, cranberry juice, water, and Powerade.

This is our biggest event of the year for pickleball and tennis racquet members and we are looking to make this our largest one ever. You must sign up by the first week of October with Dale. Let him know who is playing, dinner choices, and your pullover size. We hope to have both men’s and women’s tennis at intermediate and high levels and pickleball at member request. (Women, Men, Mixed) If you are having trouble finding a partner, reach out to Dale or myself and let us know. We will get the word out to help you find a partner at your level. Dale and the tennis committee are excited about the event. Flyers are out with more information

Court Resurfacing delayed till November / New Nets Purchased

The club has purchased nets and they will be installed prior to the Member/Guest tournament. The rainy weather affected our resurfacing but we will be adding clay and refurbishing troubled areas now.

Dale’s Corner

A new recurring feature to this article will be our pro Dale Brown’s tips for members to improve their play. Dale is on vacation so I will fill in with my favorite helpful hints.

Racquet's Up!

Tennis ABC’s:

1.

2.

3.

Advance….. If you have to come in for a short shot keep advancing forward and get the racquet ready for the next shot. Do not retreat backward. Be Aware……After playing the first four games of a match observe your opponent’s game and formulate a plan of attack returning serves, location of your serve, and exploiting weakness in their game Communicate…..Talk to your partner, encourage them, and use two favorite words on the court. Let your partner know you cannot play a ball and bounce to let your partner know the ball is going long or wide of court

Don’t forget to sign yourself and visiting guests up for Dale’s weekly clinics and round-robin play. Check the site and the pro shop for dates and times.

MIXED DOUBLES RETURNING IN OCTOBER

Every Sunday we will have Members mixed doubles social tennis 2-4. Single men and women are welcome and we will try to match people as best we can. If interested contact Kathy Verde at KathleenVerde@icloudcom

Court scheduling etiquette:

Our courts are very busy during the morning hours all seasons of the year There is much enthusiasm for the earliest sessions during the summer heat months but as we welcome our part-time members back in the fall there will also be a great demand for early courts. Please remember to make sure we can get two sessions in before 12:30 on each court as you use Court Reserve. Leagues will also be starting match play in the early afternoons so morning sessions become busier

Also please remember that if you have reserved a court and can no longer utilize it, release that court as soon as you are able to but no later than 24-48 hours before scheduled playtime. Having counts remain empty during the morning sessions when they could have been utilized by other members or resort guests is not desirable and the club has asked me to remind everyone. Many clubs charge for “no-shows.” Dale and I would like to thank you for your compliance.

Remember to warm up properly, stretch, keep hydrated, and stay safe out there. Above all HAVE FUN OUT THERE
