President’s Message By Jon Wormley Happy 80th Birthday wishes to Jack Schrader. I cannot say enough about Jack so I will not even attempt to do so. May you shoot age or better next time you play golf. And then there is Ron Tucker, one of the better golfers at our Club. I was informed on a recent Monday while playing with the skins group, that Ron received a telephone call from Greg Norman offering him a signature bonus to start playing with LIV. If this wasn’t a joke but true, I am sure Ron would buy drinks for all of us. It’s a good thing that it’s only a rumor and not true as he would lose his amateur status and most of all, we would hate that Ron could no longer play with us. Okay, to more serious matters. I am pleased to announce on behalf of the Board, the naming of our 2022 Nominating Committee. This year we will have two women, Karen Elrod and Karen Simpson, along with two men, Dave Donnelly and Micki Giglio. In their first meeting held Tuesday, July 19th, we reviewed their duties/responsibilities as set out in the By-laws, and the key dates looking forward. They understand they are a stand-alone committee and do not report to the board, and it’s their responsibility to select the best 5 people for the board’s slate, and that no one is automatically entitled to be on the slate. The committee advised that they selected Dave Donnelly as their chairperson. Interested in joining the board? Please contact any of the committee members. The board has agreed to form two ad hoc committees. The first is a group of 3 to prepare the 2023 PRPC budget for board approval and to set the 2023 Activity Fee subject to board and Heritage’s approval. The second is a committee of 4 to review the duties and responsibilities of the “Membership Committee” going forward. We find potential conflicts between the current by-laws and Heritage’s responsibilities as owner. The very hot temperatures are here. Stay hydrated - it is a must! As Always, Be Safe.
July Net, Nine and Dine Winners!
Golf Report By Bill Hazel A few random thoughts: This is just another reminder that the Heritage Member Guest is coming up September 22-24. I’m not much for used car salesman hard sells, but I can tell you that Heritage is working hard to make this event worthy of your time and money. For those already signed up, please remember to continue to post your scores (the same for your guest) so that the handicaps are current at the time of the tournament. As you know, both courses have been aerated over the last month. What I’ve been told recently is that, unlike me, Bermuda grass thrives in the heat and humidity of mid-summer, making it the best time for aeration. The good news is that the courses should recover by the time the weather cools down to something reasonable. In cooler climates with different grasses, courses have this procedure done in the spring and fall. The monthly Net, Nine and Dine events are a good way to mingle with members with whom you don’t ordinarily play golf. While during the summer it is unrealistic to think that racquet members would play for two hours in the late afternoon. It would be great if there were more racquet member participation once the weather cools.

Men’s Golf By Nigel Jones Despite the threat of storms and more rain, we had 45 members playing in the July Super Men’s Day, with a simple scramble format. Congratulations to the team of Jeff Barbic, Jim Stauffer and Kevin Nattrass with a winning total of 18 under par, 54. The Champions Cup season is just past its half-way point, and Ron Tucker has taken a strong lead at the top, but there is a closely bunched pack behind Ron. There are still 4 Super Men’s Days and 2 Majors to compete for in the second half of the year, with plenty of points still up for grabs. Remember to sign up on-line or in the Sports Shop for these events. Congratulations to Dennis Darling for shooting a net 67 and matching with Bryson Dechambeau (66) to win The Open Sweepstake. With Cameron Smith winning The Open with a flawless 64, I’m wondering if we will see some mullet hairstyles from our members trying to emulate his success !! Stay well hydrated on the course during this hot and humid season. Upcoming Events - Look out for the Invitations for these events: Super Men’s Day Wednesday, August 10 Super Men’s Day Wednesday, September 7

18 Holers By Carol Duffin In preparation for our Sadie Hawkins event to be held on September 13, I thought a little information on this American folk event might be of interest. Sadie Hawkins Day originated by Al Capp's classic hillbilly comic strip Li'l Abner was introduced on November 15, 1937 and revisited yearly. The fad of gals asking gents for a date or a dance really took off and the beginnings of a woman's "liberation" started, albeit on a very small scale. So, ladies line up your gents and sign up for this fun event.
Just a reminder for those Trip to Fripp gals, we have two nights on Fripp with two rounds of golf (September 14-16). Part 2 of Water Hazards Red Stakes - Lateral Water Hazard The Rules Ref will discuss your options for relief when your ball is in the red penalty area. You may play the ball where it lies without penalty or take relief with a penalty stroke. Options for taking relief with penalty stroke: 1 - player may take stroke & distance relief by playing a ball from where it was originally hit. 2 - player may take back- on-the line relief by dropping ball in a relief area based on a line straight back from the hole through the reference point. 3 - player may take lateral relief-dropped, and played two club lengths from the point the ball was judged to enter the hazard

9 Holers By Judi Chmielowiec
Even with this over-the-top heat and humidity, we had a great turn out among our Nine Holers. (I know, I know, I took the month of July off to enjoy my granddaughters’ visit, but can you blame me??) Congratulations to these ladies with some fabulous scores: June 23: Congratulations to Mary Lou Murphy with a Low Net of 37! Sally Ann Wormley finished the day with the only Par among us! Our month of July is being directed by Nefeli Keebaugh and she has a very fun slate of prizes and a very unique Girls’ Night Out for July 20. As this event will happen after the Newsletter deadline, I will have a full report of this outing in the September issue. Stay tuned! July 7: Congratulations to Joan Hazel as the Low Putts winner with only 16 putts in 9 holes! That’s very impressive! July 14: Mary Lou Murphy did not let the weather deter her very impressive play with a Low Gross score of 55 and a Low Net score of 33 for Individual stroke Play game. Mary Ann Shallcross had a chip-in, as well as a par on Barony #6 for her great play! As you know, Cherie Bailey never misses a birthday announcement for our Nine Hole Ladies. However, she out did herself with the following quotes to keep us laughing – thank you Cherie! • Golf is a lot of walking, broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic. • The people who gave us golf and called it a game are the same people who gave us bagpipes and called it music. • A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours. • Are we playing by men’s rules today, or do we count every putt?!! • The reason the pro tells you to keep your head down is so that you can’t see him laughing. – Phyllis Diller • They call it golf because the other four-letter words were taken. – Ray Floyd On that note, I will see you next month, and remember, the Nine Holers play 9 or 18, ride or walk!! If you would like to join our group, please feel free to contact me at jwc10201@yahoo.com
Racquets Up! By Jan Schuppert RACQUETS/PADDLES UP! The Success of Pickleball When the Tennis Magazine dedicates half of its bi-monthly issue to the growth and popularity of pickleball, you know it is big and here, there, and everywhere to stay. Clubs all over the country are renaming themselves ---Racket and Paddle. Among the many who have picked up the paddle are well-known celebrities including Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Stephen Colbert - who is currently working on a two-hour production aptly entitled Pickled. What makes it so popular and why now? Some of us who have taken up pickleball might say that, aside from keeping score, “it is easy to learn” (Stu Upson of USA Pickleball). “You can get out there in an hour and not embarrass yourself. Other sports take much longer” (Upson). Nels Van Patten says “it’s a miracle worker on the body… Pickleball doesn’t hurt your joints or tendons.” It is also a sport that seems to spawn relationships and friendships. It grew into a great past time during COVID, as more solitary walkers and joggers were looking for activities that were both safe and social. People started drawing courts in their driveways and inviting neighbors to play whom they had never previously met. The needs of both body and spirit are met on the court. Pickleball has grown so much that there is now major league pickleball. “APP founder and CEO Ken Herrmann … this (past) May ran the APP $125,000 New York City Open, a tournament featuring 1,600 participants played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center” (Drucker). There is even a movement afoot to get pickleball into the Olympics. “So much about pickleball adds up to an enticing equation: competition plus camaraderie equals community” (Drucker). If you haven’t yet, you should give it a try. Drucker, Joel. “Where Everybody Knows Your Game.” Tennis Magazine. July/Aug, 2022, 20 – 23.
Racquets Up! CONTINUED… Congratulations! PRRC Member Bill Sanni and his grandson Braedon Urzua earned the Bronze Trophy at the USTA Grandfather – Grandson Grass Court National Championships, held in Boston, Massachusetts, July 10 -15, 2022. Excellent!
