President’s Message By Jon Wormley

The Golf & Racquet Club continues to attract new members, which is wonderful. To those who have recently joined our Club, “Welcome.” We look forward to your participation whether it is golf, tennis, pickle ball, or the various other activities like Bridge or Mah Jongg. Our social events are first class and a great way to meet other members and make new friends. Our Ambassador program for new members is in its 5th year, and to-date it has been a great success. To our existing members, I now make a special request. We need your support by becoming Ambassadors to our new members. This request is especially directed to those of you who have been on the receiving end of our program. Please contact Nefeli Keebaugh at 703623-7617 or by email at Nefeli.Keebaugh@gmail.com. Participation by our members is critical to the success of this program. Help keep our Port Royal Club growing and successful. As we move into March, our golfing groups kick off the beginning of their various annual tournaments. The Ladies 18 Hole group have their Member/Member Match Play, the men have their Two Man Stroke Play, and the Ladies 9 Hole group have their Ringer tournament in March. Support these groups with your participation and have fun. On the social front, our social committee is looking forward to this year’s 1st Monthly Member Social on March 3rd followed by Bingo night on March 15th. These social events are for all members and surprise me with a large turn-out, by making reservations now. As always, be safe.

Golf Report By Bill Hazel

Despite some iffy weather in February, the golfing year has gotten off to a good start with strong participation in both women’s and men’s group events. As spring approaches, the maintenance team has been busy preparing the courses in anticipation of increased play. In March, club members are going to assist the maintenance team with a project to address the out-of-bounds markers. On two scheduled days in March, a group of members - led by Ernie Marsico - will be repairing, replacing, and adding white stakes on both Barony and Robber’s Row. As you know, a penalty for a shot going out-of-bounds is more punitive than for a shot going into a hazard (usually marked by a red or yellow stake). People from time to time will play an out of bounds shot as a hazard, which is OK if that is what your group decides to allow, but not OK for tournaments or for posting scores. Without trying to sound like a USGA rule book, here are some reminders why you should avoid white stakes: • The long-standing rule has been that if your ball goes out of bounds, you need to take a one stroke penalty and hit from the same spot as the previous shot (“stroke and distance” penalty). • If you are not sure if the shot went OB, you can declare a “provisional” and hit again. If the first shot is in bounds, you would then pick up the provisional. If not, you would play the provisional shot thereby incurring the stroke and distance penalty. • More recently, a rule was added (to speed up play) where instead of hitting again, you can choose to place the ball in the fairway nearest where the ball appeared to go OB and take a twostroke penalty. You don’t have this option if you have hit a provisional shot. • It is considered OB if a ball clears a hazard and goes off the course. An example of that would be if someone (like me) hits the second shot from Barony #12 and it slices over the lagoon and lands on a neighbor’s property. • If your ball is in bounds but the white stake is interfering with your next shot, you can’t move the stake (you can move a red stake) or take free relief. Additionally, you do not get free relief from a fence marking the edge of the golf course (like Barony #7 and #8). In either case, the most likely remedy would be to drop it two club lengths from where it lies (no closer to the hole) with a one stroke penalty. Hopefully we can all admire the upgraded white stakes from afar – preferably the fairway.

Men’s Golf

By Nigel Jones The number of members playing during the sanctioned group play is encouragingly high, and hopefully this will continue as the cooler weather is behind us. The high participation does, however, put a little pressure on us all to ensure that we play “ready golf”, and we need to strive to play our rounds in 4hours to 4 hours 15 mins (for 4 balls). Here are some things that we can all consider to ensure an ongoing enjoyment for all members: Pace of Play Considerations: (while being courteous to your playing partners) • • • •

Ask yourself the question – “do I need to take 2-3 practice swings before each shot?”. Take your yardage and choose your club, while other members of your group are playing their shot Line up your putt, while others are playing their shots After the hole is completed, move on immediately to the next tee box and then mark your scorecard, and clean your clubs.

· 1 minute saved per hole, per group, will reduce the time per round by more than 15 minutes February Super Men’s Day was enjoyed by 38 members. Congratulations to the winning team of John Beeder, Rick Keebaugh, Dave Donnelly and Wes Warren with a score of 92, after a scorecard playoff. The first Major of the year will take place in March. The 2-man Stroke-play Championship will be held on Tuesday 8 March, and Friday 11 March. We will, as usual, be running a championship flight, member tee flights and black tee flight (provided we have enough teams sign up). So, find a partner and sign up. If you do not have a partner, let the Sports Shop know, and they will arrange to pair you up. Finally, we are looking for members to help repair and replace Out of Bounds Markers. An extensive survey of the markers have been undertaken thanks to Dennis Darling. On March 1 (after the Member Tee play ca. 2:30pm) and on March 11, after the end of 2-man stroke-play (around 2:00pm) we will set out to complete this task. Jay has agreed to help encourage participation, by providing some beverages!! Upcoming Events: • Out of Bounds Markers – Tuesday 1 March and Friday 11 March – meet at clubhouse at 2:30pm • 2 Man Stroke-play Championship – Tuesday 8 March and Friday 11 March • (Rain Dates: Monday 14 March and Wednesday 16 March) • Super Men’s Day – Wednesday 6 April February Super Men's Day Winners : Rick Keebaugh, Dave Donnelly, John Beeder and Wes Warren (absent)

18 Holers

By Carol Duffin March has arrived and with it so much to enjoy. Did it come in like a Leo (lion) and will it go out like an Aries (lamb)? We can look forward to Daylight savings time and more available hours on the links, St. Patricks' day and the wearing of the green, the Spring Equinox on March 20 and nicer temperatures; but behold, for those of you with allergies, the pollen season is in full swing. March 2 at 3pm is also the Lady 18's Short Game Challenge that includes an invite to those of our "sisters" in the 9 Holers who wish to participate. It's a fun event that challenges your short game prowess (putting, hitting out of traps, hitting over traps, approach shots to the green of 50 and 80 yards, chipping from the fringe to the pin). Did you know that the short game (from 100 yards in) is equal to just under 70% of golf shots? Improving this part of your game is probably the fastest way of improving your golf scores. March 15 & March 22 are the dates of our Member/Member tournament. It's time to find your partner so you will be ready for signups. March 31 is our away day trip to Bacon Park in Savannah. If you have not signed up and wish to, contact Heather Stevens. Additional information to participants will be forthcoming in emails. Remember to Spring Forward and continue Having Fun with Friends.

By Judi Chmielowiec Cherie Bailey, our February Director of the Month, reminds us that February is “Go Red” for American Heart Association awareness, as well as the month of love! Cherie had us wearing red to all of our games, handed out Valentine treats in our golf carts and organized a huge surprise at our Tee Time Dinner at the Clubhouse. Cherie secretly planned a surprise Engagement Party for our dear members, Nene Shope and Julie DeLaurence and their respective fiancés, John Dreyer and Ed Logue. We are so happy for both couples and wish them all the best. Our members generously gifted each couple with a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant. It was a very memorable evening. Congratulations to our sweet couples! And thank you, Cherie, for organizing all of our games for February as well as this great surprise party!!

January 27 - Whaaaat? It was so cold for our Scramble Match, but these eight brave souls came out to play and the wining team was Joan Hazel, Sally Ann Wormley, Kathy McGown and Mary Ann Shallcross with a Net Score of 43. A close second was the team of Mary Lou Murphy, Barbara Scotti, Sue Walker and Stephanie Beeder with a Net Score of 46. I would say that both teams deserve the honor for showing up - congratulations ladies for your skill and determination to play!! Some of us cold weather wimps did, however, show up for lunch to congratulate the Scramble winners! It has always been a tradition to gather for lunch after our golf games. But, with our busy schedules and outside interests other than golf, we have missed this gathering for awhile. However, we made the extra effort to get together and had a group of about 15 for lunch. We had a great time getting to meet and know the newer members, as well as catching up with each other. We now meet on the last Thursday of the month for lunch, and I would say it was quite the success!

February 3 - Throw Out Worst Hole, “While Wearing Red” Day! Everyone supported AHA month, as well as the month of love by wearing red!! Great looking group of Nine Hole Ladies sporting their red outfits! Our winners for the day with a First Place Tie were Nefeli Keebaugh and Joan Hazel with a Net 23; Second Place Winner was Karen Simpson with a Net 25 and Third Place Winners with a Net 26 among five ladies. First Place honors goes to………JoAnn Gibbs with a Net 33; Second Place Tie Winners are Joan Hazel and Kathy McGown with a Net Score of 34 and Third Place Winner was Judi Chmielowiec with a Net Score of 35. It was a beautiful day to play golf! Join the Nine Holers! We walk or ride, play 9 or 18 and always encourage fun but competitive golf! See you on the course!

Seeking New Ambassadors The Port Royal Club Board is SEEKING NEW AMBASSADORS!!!! Come join in the fun of meeting new members…. One of the continuing and wonderful traditions of Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club is the tradition of having club ambassadors. Ambassadors shepherd new members through the club on-boarding process; primarily getting to know the club and taking advantage of all the club has to offer from sports to social events and more. It is an easy and fun job! You will get to meet some wonderful new people and many great friendships will develop as part of this role. Good news is… membership is exploding! Bad news is… we need more ambassadors! If you are willing to volunteer as an ambassador, please send an email to: Nefeli.Keebaugh@gmail.com. Please include your name, email, cell and if one or both spouses are golf and/or racquet enthusiasts. If you have questions about the role of this program, please call Nefeli at 703-623-7617.

Looking forward to hearing from you, PRGRC Board Membership Committee
