President’s Message From: Judy Robinson

August is BOGO month! Buy One, Get One free (compliments of the BOG) happens Sunday, August 27th, and the low country menu looks fabulous! Shrimp and Grits or Stuffed Chicken Breast, two of Chef Eric’s specialties. Twenty-five dollars for two meals that includes two drinks! No wonder BOGO is always a sell-out, so please make your reservations early with Ted. Writing about dining, I find August gives me a chance to assess the past seven months of dining at the Clubhouse and to give credit to Denny Bozic and his Social Committee as well as to Anne Pufal and Chef Eric and their staff. First, the Social Committee ventured to try new menus for Sunday end of the month parties, and they also created a Members’ dining event each month that has been theme based and well attended. By working with Anne and Eric, we’ve experienced Mardi Gras, Beer Tastings, Burger Night, Seafood Specials, Prime Rib Night, Cabaret Music nights, and $2.00 Tuesdays. The first reward has been to watch members and staff work together to create an exciting social program at our club. Tuesday through Friday, members are able to enjoy exceptional, tasty menus with friendly, well-trained service at the most reasonable prices on the island. The second reward is seeing the response from members and local visitors who have gathered to share a little dinner with friends and a lot of conversation and fun! If you’ve missed these evenings, please come join us. Thank you to Denny, Anne, Eric and the many serving behind the scenes. And thank you to you members who have helped eat our way to success! Twilights have brought golfers, tennis players and social members together. July’s popular event found us spilling over from the Members Dining Room into the bar area. Serving 71, the staff met the challenge while members literally raised the ceiling with laugher and chatter! The Fall promises to be equally exciting as we plan a Pasta Night, a Matthew Survival Dinner and an evening of Fine Dining! But first in September is the Heritage Invitational. 4

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mark your calendars for September 28th – 30th, invite your golfing friends, and let’s be “all in” for Casino Royale. August begins one of the most significant activities of our club: the nominations and election of next year’s board. At the July BOG meeting the following members were appointed to serve on the Nominating committee: Jack Schrader (Chairman), Chris Hall, Tricia Higgins, Jack Ray, and Marcia Schwyn. They will determine candidates, prepare the ballots and oversee the election, which will happen, November 6th at the Club House. We’ll hear more in the September newsletter. August also means breaking ground on campus: a new, level golf driving range will soon open. The parking lots north of the main driveway are closed as construction for the new tennis courts begins. Anyone who has had construction in or around his home, remembers the disruption and tolerance necessary for the new look. As we find ourselves inconvenienced, while “under construction,” let us as members realize what this new facility holds for us and find extra patience and courtesy in ourselves. Amidst all the construction, we are planning a celebration of Robber’s Row Golf Course - Robber’s Row was opened fifty years ago! How fortunate we are to enjoy this historical course which continues to be in great condition! Heritage Golf Group is hosting a golf scramble and lunch for the golf members on August 18th. Please make plans to join us as we celebrate fifty years!

August also brings family and friends visiting along with more hot weather and storms to our island. Enjoy and be safe in your travels!

Greetings from the Men’s Golf Committee!

Congratulations to our July 19th “C” Cup event winners: Larry Ernst, Tom Brettingen, Peter Zych, Chris Grigoriou Don’t forget about the final Championship Cup outing of the summer, Super Men’s Day on August 16th. Plan on signing up and playing…and there will be free beer available. Mike Hall By now you probably know about the change in our Champions Cup schedule this year. Champions Retreat, our sister Heritage Club in Augusta, has set the date they can host this year’s event for September 18th – 20th. Consequently, our “C-Cup” season will be shorter this year and all events after September 18th will count towards next year’s Champions Cup. In addition, Heritage is expanding the event to two days with Port Royal playing against five or six other Heritage Clubs. The Champions Retreat courses in Augusta are beautiful and Heritage is a great host. I am confident it will be a great event! When you get a chance, make sure you look at the updated standings on the bulletin board in the Pro Shop. There are a number of players who are “in the hunt”” with our top six finishers traveling to Augusta. I want to remind you of the annual Heritage Invitational Member-Guest outing September 28th-30th. If you haven’t signed up, consider doing so. It is always an enjoyable outing. In addition to the Invitational, we have the Individual Stroke Play Tournament in October and the Two Man Match Play Tournament in November. And finally, please make sure that you fill your divots, fix ball marks and rake bunkers for your fellow members coming behind you. See you on the Links!!

Ladies Nine Hole Golf Association

Since moving here nearly twenty years ago, Hilton Head has changed in many ways. Here at Port Royal we are in the midst of experiencing, first hand, major changes to our area. The Plantation is in the process of building a new Beach House, and Heritage is moving forward to establish a new tennis/pickle ball facility right here in our golf club area. The latter will be followed up with a Joan Whitaker Fitness/Wellness center to round out the sports complex. What a great asset this will be! As a result of upcoming demolition/construction, a group of us spent one of our aftergolf Thursdays clearing out the 9 Holer’s section of the ladies’ locker room. We had a great “walk down memory lane” as we leafed through several photo albums dating back to the early days of ladies’ golf, including a 1993 collection of the first Tee Time Potluck (Pitch In) at Mary and Joe Patrick’s house. In addition, we took down the many collages we had accumulated over the years. Thanks to all who helped with this project, especially Fermina Evans and Marcia Schwyn who will store these items for us. Despite the heat and humidity, we had our group of faithful players participating during the past month. The team of Judy Blake, Jo Ann Gibbs, Sue Huey and Rick Tranquilli won the Tee Time golf on 6/20. Pat Pollak came in first with Sue Huey second in the Individual Stroke Play on 6/22. Playing our new 411 game on 6/29, Teresa Carroll had the best score with Barbara Fratarcangelo and Sue Huey tied for second place. The Individual Stroke Play on July 6 was won by Jo Ann Gibbs with Sue Huey second. And, one of our newer members, Cherie Bailey, won the Blind Hole Event on 7/13 with a 29 followed by Marcia Schwyn’s 31. Congratulations to all! Many thanks to Jo Ann Gibbs and Joan Pruett who took charge of July’s golf, to Sue Huey for June’s Mexican Potluck and to Cherie Bailey for the Summer Picnic in July. As always, Jo Ann’s help with the dinners is much appreciated. Make note: Joan Street is Director of the Month for August, and Judy Blake is hosting the Potluck Dinner on Tuesday, August 15. Be sure to check your e-mail for details and remember to sign up in the Brown Book in the Pro Shop. Also, due to the construction, the Exchange with multiple other 9 hole groups scheduled here for November 9 will be rescheduled for November 2018.

Lastly, mark your calendar for our Quarterly Luncheon Meeting following golf on Thursday, September 7 and the Heritage Member/Guest event, CASINO ROYALE, starting September 28. Even if you don’t play in the latter’s golf events, the social activities will be great!

Ladies 18 Hole Association

Marianne Tillman, President

Greetings from North Carolina! No bear sightings yet, but I did see a Momma Otter and her three pups on my morning walk with Fred the other day. Very exciting. There are lots of changes happening in Port Royal Plantation! The planned Beach House and the new tennis facility that Heritage will begin constructing in the next year will have many benefits but we will need lots of patience in the coming year while we await completion of these projects. Our friends in the Pro Shop, Ben, Aric and Carol, have provided us with assistance in finding areas to store our 18 Hole Golf Group possessions. They have also made a location available for our Ringer Board. Thank you all.

On June 28th Jolanta Taylor held a 95th birthday party at the Beach House for Mary Hickey, her dear friend and neighbor. Seventeen ladies joined in this surprise, and Sophie Burger arranged for a special serenade from Larry Perigo of the Headliners. Mary sends her thanks to the PR ladies for their cards and letters and for making her 95th such a joyous occasion. This Sept. 12th we will be playing our annual Sadie Hawkins Tournament (rain date, Sept. 19th). If you haven’t yet asked your guest, please do. Tricia Higgins will be emailing everyone with details for the sign up. The format will be a better ball of two. This year we have constraints regarding our usual follow up Potluck and, as most players went in for lunch following golf last year, the Board has decided to go with that idea but provide beer for everyone! So play, come in for refreshments and lunch with your partner, and the winners will be announced and cash prizes distributed. Keep hydrating and finding that shady spot when you can out on the course. And speaking of shady spots, August 21st will bring Hilton Head Island a Solar Eclipse. The totality of this eclipse lies only in the continental United States. It begins in Oregon and, lasting 94 minutes, will leave our continent from South Carolina. Unfortunately, we will experience only a partial eclipse on Hilton Head beginning at 1:15 PM, and it will last only about 3 minutes. I tell you all this because it is especially important to remember never to look directly at the eclipse and to get the special glasses needed to protect your eyes while viewing this phenomenon. So, if you happen to be playing golf at 1:15, walking the beach, or anywhere outside on the 21st, be prepared! I look forward to seeing you all again very soon.

The Super Men’s Day on August 16th will be our final event on this year’s points schedule, and we’ll make our invitations for the trip after the event.
