In my four years here at the club I have often talked about the challenges of managing the different types of poa that exist throughout the golf course Poa is the predominant grass species on 90% of our greens and makes up anywhere from 40 70% of the turf on the fairways. Keeping poa alive during the summer can be difficult but it can be done.

There are plenty of courses locally who have great poa playing surfaces. It becomes more challenging though when managing a site with a history of turf loss. When turf loss happens, regardless of the reason, one of the first things that comes back is poa This is great for recovery, but not necessarily great for the long term health of the golf course

have

The picture shown is a prime example of this taking place. Last summer we had a hydraulic leak on the first green. Over the summer the turf recovered on its own, and was completely filled back in by the end of the season. This year, when the summer weather hit, despite receiving the same inputs, some of the poa survived and some did not So, how are we dealing with this issue throughout the rest of the golf course. When ever possible we are replacing the poa with other types of grass, bentgrass in the greens, tees, and fairways, or tall fescue and bluegrass in the roughs. We are also taking steps to improve the growing environments through aerification, verticutting, topdressing, and improved water management Giving the poa and better chance to survive will allow natural selection to take over and slowly the stronger types of poa will replace the weaker varieties Although this approach can come with some pain, the same areas seam to struggle year after year, it is working. This has been by far the worst weather of my 4 years at the club, but overall turf loss has been substantially lower than the summers of 2019 and 2020. message from your Superintendent

GOLF a

questions,

There are many different varieties of poa, it is estimated that an average green can have up to 20 different varieties These different varieties all come with different characteristics. You will see variations in germination rate, drought tolerance, cold hardiness, color, texture, disease resistance, etc. All this variation means that you end up with good and bad varieties with no control over what will come up. Unfortunately, what usually comes up first are weaker varieties that germinate quickly, but may not be in it for the long haul
