If you have any questions, please contact Scott Olson, Golf Course Superintendent at superintendent@knollwoodcc com or (914) 400 9329 After a rainy couple of days we can hopefully put the hot and dry summer weather behind us and look forward to a more seasonable fall. It has certainly been one of the most challenging years to manage turf I can remember. Since June 1st we have had 14 days over 90 degrees and only 6 inches of rain, 4 of them coming in one storm in July We have used over 11 million gallons of irrigation water over the past 3 months versus 3 3 million over the same time period in 2021 All things considered the golf course held up fairly well for majority of the summer Playing conditions were really good through the early part of July Since that point we have had some stress on the greens and fairways and without any regular rainfall the rough has completely stressed out As we enter the fall golf season I wanted to give you a brief overview of where we are at with the golf course and what you can expect to see over the next couple of months
GOLF
Fairways: After a strong start to the summer the fairways did suffer some turf loss this summer. Most of the loss can be attributed to weaker poa that could not handle the heat, drought, and traffic stress. Although I am not happy with the current condition of the fairways I am pleased to see that the work we have been doing over the past 3 years has helped, turf loss is not as wide spread or as severe as it has been in the past. Last week we are able to verticut a majority of the fairways and have overseeded the worst areas with better varieties of bent grass. We have a little bit more seeding to do over the next 7 10 days and will be roping the worst areas off to help them recover. I would like to core aerify fairways one more time before the season ends Late October/early November is when that will probably happen We are also looking into small changes we can make to the irrigation system to give us better coverage from the inground sprinklers and additional quick couplers to make hand watering easier for the staff
Bunkers: In late August the staff went through all of the bunkers with landscape rakes to get all of the humps and bumps out of the bunker floors. We will be doing this process again in September. We have replaced the maintenance rakes the staff uses on a daily basis to a rake with narrower and firmer tines. This seems to have solved the issue of large/deep ridges in the bunkers after the morning grooming We have also found that some of the inconsistency with the firmness of the bunkers is due to the amount of water they receive on a regular basis Bunkers that do not get hit very well with irrigation water have been softer all season due to lack of rainfall We are looking into adding additional irrigation heads to these areas to address this problem Sand depths will also be evaluated this fall and adjusted as necessary later this fall or next spring I will continue to monitor the condition of the bunkers for the rest of the season and am looking forward to hearing some feedback on the changes that have been made
Tees: Overall the tees in good condition heading into the fall Divot recovery was slow in August but it should get better as the weather improves The renovated tees on the 2nd and 11th holes turned out well and they will be open for the play the remainder of the season We are in the process of evaluating the overall condition of the rest of the tees on the course and are considering doing renovation work on several other tees over the off season We will be aerifying tees one more time before the end of the season I do not have a specific date planned yet, but right now we are targeting the last couple weeks of October
Greens: The greens have really benefitted form the cooler nights over the past 2 weeks. We have started to lower cutting heights again and have resumed a more regular rolling schedule. I expect green speeds will continue to pick up and the greens will firm up as we get later into the fall season. Over the next few weeks we are going to focus on plugging out as many of the bare/thin spots on the greens as possible. It is a time consuming process and takes a lot of patience to get it right. We will not be doing any further aerifying or verticutting until at least the week after Columbus Day and will probably hold off doing anything until the scheduled Drill and Fill operation on November 10th and 11th.
Roughs: The roughs did not handle the summer well Other than a few select areas they do not receive irrigation water and rely completely on rainfall We did do some overseeding in mid August and surprisingly some of the seed has survived despite the dry conditions. We will be doing another round of overseeding this fall as soon as the club championship is over. Depending on the recovery we get over the next couple months we might also consider dormant seeding the roughs in late November. When we do this we are not expecting any germination this year, but getting the seed in the ground and allowing it to overwinter can pre condition it for quicker germination in the spring.
