MANAGER'S MESSAGE By Rob Ciapanna
It was great to see the sold-out crowd of members having so much fun at the January 18 Trivia Night. Congratulations to “The Howellers” Team for taking home top honors. It was so well attended that we are looking to add more Trivia Nights to the 2024 calendar. We have created a Member Club Activities and Events Booklet as a quick save-the-date reminder. It lists all the 2024 Men’s and Ladies Golf Events and Clubhouse Social Events. Copies are available in the Golf Shop and Clubhouse. Earlier this month we sent out an email blast reminding everyone of the locations of the club’s AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). The locations include the Golf Shop and golf Course Maintenance Facility off #5 Hills, between the restrooms at the pool and off the clubhouse lobby. Please make yourselves, families, and guests aware of where the AEDs are located in case of a cardiac emergency. Always dial 911 first! Wishing everyone a continued happy and healthy 2024.

TURF TALK by Patrick Hensley Hello everyone, I trust you had a wonderful holiday season! As we anticipate warmer weather and the return of lush greenery, I'd like to touch upon our winter greens management. With the onset of cooler weather, our bermudagrass greens enter a dormant phase, ceasing growth. On the other hand, the Cupp greens, overseeded with Poa Trivialis, continue to flourish in suitable conditions. We maintain a regular mowing schedule for the Cupp greens to ensure optimal conditions. Now, turning our attention to the Hills greens—these are not overseeded. We approach their maintenance selectively, mowing only when weather conditions permit. Due to limited growth, we exercise caution in rolling the Hills greens. Excessive rolling can lead to rapid changes in green speeds, posing a challenge for us. Some days, our focus is simply on clearing debris, recognizing that it suffices for maintenance. Despite the challenges, putting on the greens can be a delightful experience during this time of the year. Let's navigate the winter greens with care and continue to enjoy the unique aspects they offer.

PARKER'S POINTERS by Parker Mulford “On your Mark...Get set…” Last month I started the year with an “I’m Gonna..” topic highlighting annual aspirations/goals etc. On a personal note, your scribe tends to let the first month of the year play out a bit before making any goals or serious changes. For the first time in a long while I have committed/recommitted /dedicated/ whatever! to personal health and fitness. I can hear the laughs and giggles already, but I can say that so many of the desires and wishes I have for myself, my position here, and my family this year will depend on personal fitness and capability. February is a great time to start the journey so by the time the season is in full swing ( no pun) the mind and body are at performance level. He’s my plan: Start small. I get winded tying a shoe so the “Jump in” approach is not the way for me. A stretch regimen and light basic calisthenics ( think Jr. High) will usher me into the next phase. The last thing I want is a super sore experience that could sway me off the path. The next step will be light strength training. No cling and jerk; no powerlift extravaganza. I’m planning a practical and realistic weight program that will utilize the muscles for balance, golf, core support, and endurance. I’m not 45 anymore so leg strength is big for quality of life. My wife and I live in a golf community with great scenery, and I own a fantastic mountain bike. It was top-of-the-line when I bought it. I love to look at it when I go to the garage. So in February, I intend to ride it! Not once, but if not daily at least 3 times a week.

PARKER'S POINTERS CONTINUED by Parker Mulford Proper diet will factor throughout this whole scene. I know from past dietary endeavors that grains are my weakness. Delicious breads, pastas, pizzas, and rice wreck my program I am committing to minimizing, not eliminating these temptations. My loving wife has trained me on a daily intake of vitamins and supplements to aid my health, and I’m not sure what the mix is but with a “Yes Dear” it’s down the hatch. I wanted to share this message with you not in some suggestive way of how you should handle fitness and health, nor as a means to say you better get in shape. Instead, I offer my plan as a small example of taking charge and making small changes. In addition by publicly putting it out there, I somewhat hope to shame myself into following through. Have a great month! I need to get back to my Jack LaLane tapes now.
