GOLF If you are on the golf course early in the morning you may have seen Superintendent, Scott Olson or his assistant using the tool in the picture on the greens.
The item pictured is a moisture meter. It measures the amount of water that is in the soil by measuring the electrical conductivity between to metal probes on the bottom of the meter that are inserted into the soil. We test several spots throughout the green and use the numbers in conjunction with the weather, play, and condition of the green to determine how much water to give the green that day. There is a ton of variability with the greens on the golf course, some stay wet, some dry out really quickly.
Tools like this help us to keep all the greens close to the same in terms of moisture content, which in turn, provides a more consistent surface for the player.
