President’s Message From: Judy Robinson
Dear Members, As I watch the grasses in the marsh turning from green to shades of gold and brown, I know fall is here. October brings not only cooler weather but also color to our lives. Colorful Oktoberfest ads entice us to sample beers and brats. College football colors appear in apparel and flags and on Saturday TV. Trips are planned north to the mountains to view the changing colors of fall foliage.
Come celebrate October at Port Royal! Note the calendar of activities – golf, tennis and social – on the last two pages of the The Putter Presents: “Around the Clubhouse.” Men’s and Ladies’ Stroke Play Championship Tournaments, End of the Month Golf, Tennis Clinics as well as Mah Jongg and Bridge! Our Golf Chairmen and Tennis Liaison dutifully write columns each month just to keep you informed while many members volunteer to organize theses events.
Observe the October Newsletter - Not only can you view photos from the extraordinary Invitational, “Casino Royale, “(Thank you to Jon and Sally Wormley and Chris and Heather Garmston, the Heritage Staff – Anne, Eric, Ben and Rick- for the best event), but the colorful ads are current updates about what is happening!
List on your calendar plans to attend the PRPC Annual Meeting on November 6th at 7:00 at the Clubhouse: Annual PRPC Officer Reports and Updates about Port Plantation Golf and Racquet Club are on the agenda, and more importantly, we’ll be voting!

Golf Chairman’s Report
September, 2017 what excitement around the Clubhouse!
Let me first congratulate and express our appreciation to the Heritage staff for the way they dealt with Hurricane Irma.
Jon Wormley
Irma created a lagoon in the waste bunker on #13 Robbers Row
The men played their first round of their Ryder Cup with a resulting tie between the two teams. Before the final round could be played, an uninvited guest, Irma, forced the postponement of the final round. Maybe October will be nicer to us. Irma also disrupted the 18 Hole Ladies ‘Sadie Hawkins’ event. The Ladies being so well organized, were able to hold the event the following week. As usual it turned out to be a wonderful event. Congratulations! Then just a few days later, Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club hosted for the third year running the Neighborhood Outreach Connection (NOC) Charity golf event. Turnout once again was good with Port Royal members fielding 8 teams. A Port Royal team won the event, but even more exciting was member Tom Brettingen’s hole in one on the Par 3 #14 on Barony. Congratulations Tom! I also want to thank Guess who was filming Gary and Judy Tauscher for their efforts and support of this great Charity. And of at thethe Port Royalteam Clubonce again put on a first-class tournament. course, Heritage
golf course?
On Friday June 16th, HGTV was filming a future episode of Island Life. Stay tuned for more details, later in the year.
NOC Winners: Nigel Jones, Tom Brettingen, Keith Swinehart, Gary Tauscher 8
As we close the door on September, the 2017 Heritage Golf Invitational and Casino Royale will be played. Although I am a bit biased, I will BET everyone that joined in the fun of this weekend event came away a Winner. Three days of great golf, wonderful food, great entertainment, and making new acquaintances makes this event so worthwhile. Thank you for making the 2017 Heritage Golf Invitational a success. There was a long shot that we might have even seen fortunes change at Casino Royale on Thursday night or at the Saturday night gala but again the ODDS were not in our favor. A reminder the President’s Cup will be played on Friday November 17th followed by the ‘Fine Dining’ experience that same night at the Club. This trophy event is open to ALL golfers. As the Port Royal golfing nation, it is our opportunity to express our “Thanks” to our BOG President, our 9 and 18 Hole Ladies President’s and our Men’s Golf Chairmen for their time and energy spent in 2017 making our golfing activities special. You can express your appreciation by signing up and playing in this year’s 2017 President’s Cup. FURTHER DETAILS WILL FOLLOW VERY SOON.

Super Men’s Day and Awards Luncheon
Greetings from the Men’s Golf Committee!
As I write this column, I am thankful that Hurricane Irma was essentially a non-event for the Island. I also hope that everyone came thru the storm unscathed. Unfortunately, it did postpone the 2nd day of our Ryder Cup event which was knotted up at 10 ½ points after day one. More to come on day two and plans for next year’s event. Mike Hall In October, we have our Men’s Individual Stroke Play Tournament scheduled for October 11th and 13th. This will be a 36-hole Tournament, playing from both Black and White Tees. There will also be a partially subsidized lunch by the Men’s Golf Committee and a skills competition on day 2 of the Tournament. There will be awards for both low gross and low net score winners. The Club Champion will be the low gross winner from the White Tees competition. Watch for more details and please make sure you sign up for the Tournament. In November, we will sponsor our annual Two Man Match Play Tournament November 8th, 10th and 11th and our final Super Men’s Day and luncheon on November 15th. As a reminder, points garnered for our October Men’s Stroke Play Tournament, Two Man Match Play Tournament and the November Super Men’s Day Event will count towards next year’s “2018 C-cup” Championship. Finally, don’t forget to fill divots, repair ball marks and rake bunkers for players following you. See you on the links!

Well, here we are again folks. We survived Matthew and now Irma too, and all in less than one year. Thankfully, Irma never fulfilled all of her potential here in our plantation and we can count our blessings for that. Our September 19th Sadie Hawkins Event had a great turnout with 20 pairings. Our lunch format was also a winner. Everything went very smoothly from start to finish. Many thanks to Gay and Aric for putting the golf together. Also thanks to Anne Pufal for creating the menus and setting up the lunch. The winners were: 1st Place: Jolanta Taylor and Joe Tosh; 2nd Place: Gail McGavack and Bob Moore; 3rd Place: Tammie Blank and Jim Anderson; and 4th Place: Betsy Papale and Peter Moore. I will be meeting shortly with Hiltrud Gabler, Heather Garmston, and Betsy Papale, the Board Member Selection Committee for 2018. We will begin the selection process for the Executive Board, to be voted on at our Annual Luncheon and Meeting on Wednesday, Sadie Hawkins Winners: December 13th. The names will be announced in next month’s column. Joe Tosh and Jolanta Taylor Have you been "whining" about the rules of golf? Ladies 18 and 9's are invited to participate in a "wine" and rules session with Clarissa Childs, President of the SCWGA, at the Port Royal Clubhouse from 3 - 4:30 PM on Monday, Oct. 16th (Wine will be available for $4.50 a glass and light appetizers will be served.) Clarissa will tour our member course and be ready to answer questions you may have regarding current rules and recent rule changes. Hopefully, she will also be able to give us some insight into the on-going, 5 year examination by world golf authorities of the rules of golf and their attempt to simplify the game. A page for this event will be in the Brown Book in the Pro Shop to confirm attendance Please join us. Please remember to sign up for the Stroke Play Championship Tuesday, October 17th and 24th, with the 31st as a rain date. Tee times will be assigned and begin at 8:30 am. On the 17th we will be playing on Barony and the 24th will be on Robbers.

Just a reminder, please put the Wednesday, November 8th Short Game Challenge on your calendar. We had a great turnout for this event last time it was held. Carol Duffin designed the challenges and it will be executed and directed by Aric and Gay once again. It brings a whole new perspective to an important aspect of the game of golf, and the after party is terrific! Please remember that our league changes its starting time in October. We begin at 9 am, but must be in our carts, ready for announcements and instructions by 8:45 am. (The exception is the Championship Stroke Play event for which we have assigned tee times). We were very sad to hear of the loss of one of our longtime 18 Hole members, Sylvia Hitchcock. Her joyful, fun spirit will be remembered by all who had the good fortune to know her.
Ladies Nine Hole Golf Association

Irma’s name will be remembered for years to come as a harsh reminder of sad events in the Caribbean and many parts of Florida. And we will remember yet another evacuation and be so very thankful that we were, for the most part, spared the storm’s wrath. As we approach the anniversary of Mathew’s visit, let’s hope the hurricane season is soon over.
We are delighted to have Judi Chmielowiec as our newest 9 hole player and look forward to sharing many fun times on and off the course with her. It’s a challenge to pronounce her name, but she has taught us well to remember “Melowitz”. There’s lots of golf activity to report. On 8/17, the “Throw Out 2 Holes” game was won by Jo Ann Gibbs with a 23, followed close behind by Sally Ann Wormley’s 24. On 8/24, in “Individual Stroke Play”, they took the spotlight again with Sally Ann edging out Jo Ann by one stroke, 38 vs 39. Sally Ann went on to win our new “Sally’s Game” on 8/31 earning 27 points with Joan Street’s 25 second. The “Low Putts” game on 9/7 was won by Jo Ann with 17 and a MOC gave Joan Whitaker the place finish over Judy Blake with 18 putts. Despite the course just returning to normal operation, 4 players showed up on 9/ 14 to play a “Skins Game” with Sue Huey the big winner with 5 skins. Speaking of Sue, many thanks for her help as Director of the Month in September. Fermina Evans will take over the duties this month.

When he is not teaching, Dana is still improving our club experience. As he strings a racquet, he may take the time to print a smiling face on it. When the outside faucets are in need of help, he will take them apart and repair the problem. When a hurricane occurs, he will be the first on site to clear away the huge accumulation of tree debris, smooth the courts, clean the sidewalks, and fix the broken fences until all the courts are usable again. When I asked him to meet with me, he conveniently forgot, not wanting to bring any attention to himself. Thank you Dana, for all you do for all of us. We are so fortunate to have you on our team!
Racquets Up! Jan Schuppert, Vice President
For the second time in less than one year, it has been necessary to clean up the mess and destruction left by two hurricanes named Matthew and Irma. Thankfully the tasks this year were less extensive than those of last year, but still above and beyond the normal work load of the people who keep our courts ready for play. Thanks to the efforts of our maintenance crew; Larry Perigo, Terry Freck, Dave Hales and our pro Dana Landin, we were back on the courts playing tennis on Thursday after the storm on Monday September 11th. We do appreciate your efforts and hard work! Although tennis is primarily thought to be an individual sport, it is abundantly clear that Dana
Landin, our Port Royal Teaching Pro of more than twenty-five years, is a team player. First of all, as most of us know through our personal experiences, Dana excels as a teacher. We have benefitted and honed our skills over the years by taking his lessons, drills, and clinics. Those who have been around for many years also know that many tennis players who are not PRRC members also seek Dana to help them improve their games. Many return year after year from our Island and well beyond to learn from and practice with him. From newbies like me to pros like Martina Navratilova, Dana has enhanced the tennis experience. He is ever watchful, even when he is not “in class, commenting and encouraging and advising those of us who are lucky enough to know him and learn from him.

Port Royal Racquet Club served up an exciting exhibition of high level tennis on Friday afternoon, August 25th. Approximately 70 club members and staff enjoyed viewing what Dana Landin described as a “perfect balance” of tennis played by himself and David Lewis. They prevailed over Jade Lewis and Tom Coulton with Denny Bianco officiating from the umpire’s chair. The crowd would have been happy to stay for more as the play was great, exiting and competitive. This event was a real treat and more events such as this would be welcomed! Many of the members completed the evening at the Robber’s Row Grill for good food, conversation, and fun.
On Friday 9/22 the Port Royal Racquet Club hosted a Member-Guest round robin tennis event. Great tennis by all!
Men’s Winners: Terry Schwartz (guest) Larry Fleming (member)
Jade Lewis, who was an AllAmerican at LSU and who trains here at Port Royal recently turned Pro. She has already gone on to win a professional tournament in Florence, SC. The win qualifies her for additional professional tournaments, one of which will be held in Shipyard Plantation in October. Keep your eye on the progress of this very talented young lady!
