President’s Message From: Judy Robinson What is this strange masthead across May’s monthly newsletter? What is this exciting presentation of events at Port Royal that you are now reading? What is this seemingly slick magazine production with lots of photos and ads and easy–to-find club information? May is bringing changes to our club and our members and to ways of communicating! First, Heather and Chris Garmston, editors of The Putter for over seven years, are retiring. We are grateful for their dedication to publishing a professional newsletter that carried accurate and timely information. Thank you, Heather and Chris, for your creativity and for the extraordinary amount of time and energy you’ve given. Heather will continue to serve on the Board as director of Publicity. Jim Stauffer, now serving as our editor, is, with this first issue, introducing a digital newsletter. After working closely with Heather Garmston, Lisa Dahlstrom and Anjali Sharma , Jim brought to the PRPC BOG a design and technique for a newsletter that will better serve all members of Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club. With Barony and Robbers Row in excellent shape, a new tennis and fitness center waiting to break ground, and a clubhouse that’s being refurbished, the board agreed that it was time to replace The Putter with a colorful publication, one that compliments the many components of our Club and describes our exciting future.

BUT, it lacks a name. You are invited to propose a name, which will update and describe our new publication. Please read Jim Stauffer’s column for more details and submit your entry!

Jon Wormley, as Golf Chairman, will now chair the Course Condition Committee. By the time you read this, the 18 hole ladies will have chosen their green outfits and be enjoying their annual Member/ Guest. Later that week The Port Royals host their Kick Off Dinner on May 3rd which will detail plans for Sunday Couples Golf on May 7th, 14th and 28th and through the summer. Twilight on Friday, May 12th offers another evening for couples golf and tennis; the scramble format returns followed by free beer and free wine with dinner on the veranda. Super Men’s Day is the 17th; golf, lunch and free beer have made the event very popular! End of the Month Golf on May 21st completes our Sunday couples golf. With all the courts and fencing repaired, the tennis schedule is once again well attended: clinics will be held on Fridays, the 5th and 19th. The Super Senior Tennis Tournament comes to Port Royal on May 16, 17, 18, and 19. Members Friday Dinner is May 19th. The chefs continue to delight us with their culinary choices and tasty dishes. The May event will be a fried chicken picnic dinner. Plan to ask friends and enjoy an evening in our comfortable Members Room. Our memberships have grown to 258; that means over 400 members for PRPC. (Calling for reservations is a good idea!) From May Day and Cinco de Mayo celebrations through special Mother’s Day memories to Memorial Day’s heralding of summer, please enjoy fun and friendships at Port Royal!

From The Editor Jim Stauffer Hello Everyone. I am very pleased to be taking on the role as Editor of our Club’s monthly newsletter. First off, I must thank Heather and Chris Garmston for over 7 years of outstanding work on the Putter. They put in countless hours to provide all members with a great monthly update of Club news. Well Done! As you can see with this month’s May newsletter, we are introducing a new digital version. We have a new, exciting colorful look in a digital magazine format. As in the past, you will still be able to print the entire newsletter or print any individual pages that you may desire. We are also pleased to announce that we will be introducing our own Club Facebook page in early May. Details will follow in an upcoming e-blast.

As we are changing the look of the monthly newsletter, we also feel it is time for a name change. We would like to promote more of all Port Royal’s activities. In addition to golf, we have many tennis, games, dining and social activities. We are going to have a contest to create a new name for the monthly newsletter. Be creative and have some fun naming our new newsletter. The Port Royal Plantation Club board will select a name from all entries received by May 15th. Just send your name and suggestion to me (jastauffer1@gmail.com). The member with the winning name selected will receive a $25 Heritage Gift Card. The goal of the monthly newsletter will be to have a fun, informative and easy to read communication of our club activities. Good reading!

Please give a warm welcome to new Port Royal Members: Tim & Claudia Aller – Resident Single Golf/Social 12 Robbers Row 914-715-1906 T_aller@msn.com Be sure to give them a Port Royal welcome when you see them at the club!

Our Member-Member Match Play Tournament began on April 11th with the following teams winning their rounds to move on to the second and final round of play on April 18th. In Flight 1, Hiltrud Gabler and Carol Duffin will be playing Mary Zych and Barb Steiger; Flight 2 will match Tammie Blank and Nancy Simpson with Tricia Higgins and Marianne Tillman; Flight 3 will consist of Carole Howell and Cathy Grigoriou playing Dinny Cuthbertson and Sylvia Sakuta.

From the Links

Our very own Gail Brown, who gets to attend the Masters for life, reports that the players continue to amaze with their shot making abilities - but even they can have their difficulties with the wind. Francesco Molinari managed to hit his tee shot over the 4th green and the 5th tee box only to disappear into the bushes. The most amusing shot was at the 18th when Jordan Speith landed his approach shot in a female onlooker's lap and had to figure out how to retrieve it! With no Marianne Tillman, cameras allowed we hope Gail will continue to capture President some tidbits for us each year. The April 6th Shipyard Event was a fun gathering of Heritage 18 and 9 Holer ladies. Thank you Nancy Lindimore for another wonderful gettogether this year. We were blown to and fro with high winds and low early morning temps, but the company was great and we survived the elements. As usual, there was a wonderful lunch and great prizes for all. Our Port Royal 18 Holer, Tricia Higgins, and our 9 Holer, Sally Ann Wormley, won the day with their Shipyard partners with a low score of 73. Congratulations to this outstanding team.

This game of golf provides us with so many opportunities to create lasting friendships, whether it is a round on Tuesday, a Midcap or Low Country match, or a casual round with your regular group. I was reminded of this once again when I got to play our Member-Member Match Play with, and against, dear friends. A most enjoyable day. I hope everyone participating had as much fun as we did. This tournament is a great 18 Holer tradition. Our Midcap Team came in 4th at Indigo Run in April. We have our last round of competition on May 18th for this season, and then we will take a break until September. A special thanks to Betsy Papale and Dinny Cuthbertson for continuing to manage all the details for the teams that play at each venue. Port Royal's Low Country Team had its end of season luncheon in March and finished up third out of seven teams. A really respectable finish, especially when you consider the first place Team (Hampton Hall II) has to move up to Division 3 next year). Thanks to all of you for representing us so well. We are always proud of our low handicappers. They continue to amaze us with their skills. Our May 1st Member-Guest Cocktail party has been moved back to the Beach House. As long as it is still standing we'll be there enjoying the venue and the incredible view. At this point it looks like we will be enjoying the June 6th Potluck there as well! Thank you Heather Garmston for your editorial work on the Putter these last 7 plus years. A huge task each month and we are thankful that Jim Stauffer is willing to take this job on. Now what can you get yourself into Heather, with all this time on your hands?

Join the Port Royals

Ladies Nine Hole Golf Association As I catch up on the golf results since the last article, I am so pleased to be recognizing so many different individuals! Playing our new 411 game on 3/23, Barbara Fratarcangelo, Pat Pollak and Sally Ann Wormley had tied scores and the next week, Sue Huey won the Low Putts contest edging out Jo Ann Gibbs by a MOC with Pat Pollak third.

Joan Whitaker, President On April 6, six gals participated in a Heritage “exchange” at Shipyard with a group of our Port Royal 18 hole ladies and other members from the Shipyard club. Despite the sunny but, wet, windy and chilly conditions, a good time was had by all and the 9 hole players did well in the 18 hole scramble competition. Kathy Jacobson and Mary Lou Murphy won prizes for Closest to the Line; Sally Ann Wormley was on the winning team and Barbara Fratarcangelo’s team was second. Way to go!!!

Many thanks to Shipyard’s Nancy Lindelow and her committee for organizing this fun event. Hopefully, it can be continued next year and the planning will avoid the conflict we had with our schedule this time. The PGA Tournament, which took place right before Easter, certainly kept the Island buzzing with professional golf in the spotlight. We still had several gals play in Thursday’s Individual Stroke Play on 4/13 with Jo Ann Gibbs turning in the winning score. Since the Beach House is still available for use, we will have Tee Time Potluck there on May 16. Sign up for golf on the outside bulletin board and dinner in the locker room. I will be in charge. Please check your e-mails for details on the theme, etc. Thanks to Fermina Evans with Jo Ann Gibbs’ help for April’s Pizza Party and to Judy Blake and all who helped out as last month’s director after Magda Bhasin’s leaving. We will miss you, Magda, and hope you will join us for lunch when you can. Judy is DOM for May.

As representative of the ladies’ 9 hole golf group, I want to express on our behalf, a tremendous THANK YOU to Heather Garmston who is retiring as Editor of the Putter after more than 7 years of service. There is no doubt that Heather was very instrumental in making the Putter the attractive publication it is today. We appreciate all the extra effort and dedicated work Heather did with able assistance from her husband Chris. Best of Luck to Jim Stauffer who is taking on the position as Editor with this month’s edition.

We are saddened by the recent death of Jane McGahee. She and her husband, Mac, have been residents and active volunteers in our community for over 26 years. We express our condolences to Mac, their family and friends. -PRPC BOG

The "Port Royals" will be starting their 2017 season with an opening party on May 3. Our games are on Sundays from May through October, with the exception of "end-of-themonth" Sundays. We have a closing party on October 25. Cost per couple for the entire season is $90 and for individuals, $45. If you don't have a partner, we will try to find you one!! You can choose which weeks you wish to play during the season so that you are not required to play every Sunday. Game format is a better ball of the ladies, and better ball of the men, with winners paid each week. The four winners receive $10 each.

Nine hole ladies need an 18 hole handicap for Port Royal. We do the pairings for you each week, and you make your own tee times with your foursome. That way you are able to play with different couples each week, and meet more golfers. If you have any questions, please email me at cmoore5152@aol.com or Betsy Papale at betsypapale@ gmail.com. We look forward to a great season with lots of new and returning couples!! Make your check out to Cheryl Moore and send it to me at 12 Princeton Circle, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928. Don't miss out on the fun!! Sign up today!! -Cheryl Moore

Golf Chairman’s Report A very busy month of April full of golfing activities. The 2017 Masters and the Harbour Town RBC Heritage have new champions. By the time, you are reading this article, the Ladies 18 Hole group will have completed their Member-Member Match Play Championship Tournament. The Men will have also played their second major Jon Wormley tournament of 2017 and have a new Match play champion. The Husband and Wife Championship was played and Twilight Golf will have had another successful outing to start the season. As we enter the month of May, we return to a weekly course rotation. Please bear with us as we do need to juggle a few days due to prior private bookings before we made the decision to go with a weekly rotation schedule.

Our courses remain in excellent condition. We would, of course, appreciate Mother Nature to deliver of rain for us. We continue to appreciate your efforts in the filling of divots and repairing ball marks on the greens. We intend to work with our Golf Professional staff and course maintenance staff to remark ‘Drop Zones’ as well as all the hazard lines. I have also heard some concern about large pieces of wood in certain areas which we will look into. But I ask each of you to consider just how much progress has been achieved and support the efforts and turn a blind eye when you find a place that still needs some attention and send me a brief note if you really believe your overall game is impacted by a large piece of wood. Make golf fun. We all play for different reasons but mainly for the friendships we have established over the years, the fun plus a little competitiveness with our various tournaments. Respect other players first.

Plans are in the works for the 42nd Annual Member Guest Invitational. Please start making plans to join us on September 28th-September 30th.

Local Rule Highlight Ball Moved While Moving Loose Impediments As a local rule, an additional exception to Rule 182(a) is if a player accidentally moves the ball while removing loose impediments through the green, there is no penalty. The player must replace the ball in its original location.

Ben’s Take: Use this rule to your benefit in areas with new mulch. Pieces of mulch are considered loose impediments under the Rules of Golf and you are allowed to remove them through the green. The Club’s Local Rule protects you as the player by not penalizing for the ball accidentally moving while removing a loose impediment, just be sure to replace the ball where it originally lay.

Greetings from the Men’s Golf Committee! First of all, I wanted to congratulate the winners of the Men’s Member-Member Stroke Play Tournament which was held in March. I was pleased to see the significant increase in participation of our Club membership and from the feedback the Golf Committee received, the participants thought it was a successful and enjoyable event. Last year, we had ten 2-man teams participating, and this year we had nineteen. Many thanks to our membership, the Heritage staff and our golf professionals for making this event so successful. I am hoping that our 2nd Major, The Individual Stroke Play Tournament, to be held in April, is as successful. White Tee Championship Gross Champions Lanny Bailey & Ed Harbauer Net Champions Hollis Brown & Ron Billings Black Tee Championship Flight 1 Bob Puls & Bob Turner Flight 2 Nick Costalas & John Carney I also wanted to congratulate our April Super Men’s Day winning team of Hollis Brown, Marty Eichelberger, Ernie Marsico and Larry Ernst

Just a reminder, our 2nd Super Men’s Day Event of the year will be held on May 17th. If you haven’t done so yet, make sure you sign up in the Pro Shop—and continue to collect those C-cup points. Any finally, please make sure you do your part by raking bunkers, filling divots and repairing ballmarks for the players behind you.
