Auroras, the spectacle
“Lapporten”, la majestuosa puerta de la laponia sueca, formada por montañas en las cercanías del lago Torneträsk, es el nombre con el que también se conoce al Parque Nacional Abisko. Bajo este nombre se esconde, no solo la escena de un área protegida, sino también la de un pueblo escasamente poblado. Con aproximadamente 180 habitantes, las principales ocupaciones en Abisko son la pesca, el turismo y el comercio. Sin embargo, el turismo se lleva la medalla de oro gracias al efímero verano con sol de media noche y al incansable invierno con sus luces de norte.I “Lapporten”, the magestic gate of swedish lapland, formed by mountains in the surroundings of Torneträsk lake, is the name that identifies Abisko National Park. Under the same name, not only tha scene of a protected area relies, but also the name of a a village scarcely populated. With approximately 180 inhabitants, the main occupations in Abisko are fishing, tourism and trade. Even so, tourism takes the gold medal thanks to the ephemeral summer with its midnight sun and the tireless winter with its northern lights.

o existe atracción más impresionante que aquella que la naturaleza nos ofrece. Sobrevolando al círculo polar ártico, el fenómeno físico en el que se basan muchas creencias de la cultura Sami – la cultura indígena de los países nórdicos – es uno de los espectáculos más aclamados por los turistas. El arte de verse cara a cara con estas verdosas majestades se denomina “cazar auroras” y, efectivamente, es una caza, ya que encontrarlas no es tarea

The main reason why the northern lights are friendly with the human eye is because of its wavelength, that is to say the dancing colours in the sky that are within the human visible spectrum (400 a 700 nm).

Dimitri Damchenko, one of the touristic guides from Abisko Guesthouse in Sweden, place where professional safaris to haunt auroras are offered, explains that this phenomenon starts from a chemical reaction between particles from the sun, electrons and gases coming from our atmosphere, like oxigen and nitrogen. “I prefer to call them explosions, but to simplify it, a chemical reaction is produced and it results in a colour”. Like that, we know that the green tones, and the most common ones, are due to oxigen and the violet tones are due to nitrogen. So the next time you stumble across one of these phenomenological marvels, you will know what you see is one of our atmosphere gases happily dancing with solar energy.

ara quienes disfrutan de un invierno menos frío y de una compañía peluda, las granjas alrededor de Laponia son una opción magnífica. A pesar de que es necesario ser cuidadoso con las actividades que eliges, es decir, es necesario ser un turista consciente, muchos turistas son testigos de prácticas respetuosas con los animales dentro de este negocio. Philip Piel, un turista alemán que visita “All Huskies Oy”, en Kittilä, comenta que los perros dormían en amplias jaulas y que el cuidador conocía el nombre y la fecha de nacimiento de cada uno de los más de 70 perros alaskan y huskies siberianos que viven en la granja. They were healthy and happy”. Kittilä, Sami name from one of the municipalities of northern Finland, is the ideal option if moreover than farms you want to have several and close accomodation options, shops, excursions and winter sports. Specially this last one, since 40 minutes away by car there is Levi Ski Resort, one of the most popular skiing resorts in whole Finland.
