Editor’s Letter It’s officially over. For some mothers, summer break represented a reprieve from daily routine centered around their school-age children and their seemly endless activities. For other moms, complaining about the higher food and utility bills, their children going back to school is the reprieve. No matter one’s outlook, parents must prepare for this transition, so we include an article on “Five Ways to Get Your Child Ready to Learn.” Like our children, our health should be a primary concern, especially having regular checkups such as breast cancer screenings. With that in mind, we highlight the founder of the modern breast cancer awareness movement, the late Evelyn Lauder, and longtime spokesperson Elizabeth Hurley. Our cover, in fact, celebrates the duos’ extensive international impact over the last 25 years, including everything from the creation of the pink ribbon symbol to custom Estee Lauder pink-shaded lipsticks. My hope

is that you, our readers, learn as much about the Breast Cancer Campaign and Foundations’ origin and impact as we did in editing the articles: one on Hurley and one on Lauder. Without a doubt, women are making great strides in just about every industry. Musical composer Kira Fontana is among those women, a relative pioneer for females in film scores. Her very first film project has garnered critical acclaim, and we have her exclusive interview in this issue. Meanwhile, as always, we feature other interesting women and topics that affect women in their personal, social and professional lives. Remember to read and share! Until, Annette R. Johnson

WHISKEY CHICKEN WINGS This chicken wing recipe is one of my all-time favorite ones. They are sweet, sticky and moorish. The whiskey marinade and sauce makes this a winner. Best cooked on a coal BBQ. Ingredients: • Chicken wings. A little or a lot. You will want a lot they are too tasty for one. (Prep them by twisting the wing so they cook flat.)
• About a cup of whiskey • 1 cup of stock (homemade) • Onion and garlic flakes • Sea salt and pepper corns • Paprika • Brown sugar
Method 1. For the marinade place the finely diced onion, crush garlic using your knife to form a paste and slice jalapeños. Add to bowl. Then add the stock molasses and whiskey. For the rub, in a mortar and pestle grind salt and peppercorns, add the onion, garlic flakes, brown sugar and paprika. Rub chicken with the mix getting into every nook and cranny. Take one zip lock bag or container, place in the rubbed chicken and pour the liquid marinade into vessel. Seal and let it sit in the fridge overnight. 2. Fire up the grill and get the coals nice and hot. Add peach wood or hickory chips for an awesome smoky flavor explosion. Arrange in one layer on the grill set over 32

indirect low heat. If you are using charcoal or wood, it will be very difficult to do this, so set your fire on one side of the grill and arrange the wings on the other side, away from the direct heat. You want them to cook slowly, with little or no sizzle. Baste with marinade then cover the grill and cook like this for 30 minutes. 3. Once the chicken is nice and charred and cooked through remove from heat de-glaze pan (pour juices back into pan) with some more stock and marinade. Add butter, some more brown sugar if you like and reduce until you get a thick sticky sauce. 4. Drench the chicken with the sauce and get messy.

+ HER HAIR
An Atlanta entrepreneur is doing her part to help more than six million Americans silently suffering from an incurable disease.
Gina Conwell owns and operates Desired Extensions in Atlanta, Georgia. Her hair extensions company has found a unique way to give back – specializing in creating custom hair pieces for those suffering from Alopecia. Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that occurs in women, men and children. The disease shows itself primarily with significant hair loss. Alopecia can be triggered by stress or illness causing inflammation of the scalp and damage to the hair follicles. There is currently no cure for Alopecia but medical researchers have developed treatments that slow down hair loss. Conwell isn’t a stranger to the disorder. In addition to crafting hair pieces that help alopecia patients hide the embarrassing effects of the disease, she also works to raise awareness and help those coping with Alopecia. Conwell says that although the onset and cause of the hair loss is still somewhat mysterious, there are ways women can care for their hair that can prevent dangerous inflammation of the scalp and 36

protect their precious locks. First, Conwell urges women to only wash their hair once a week using only shampoos that are free of harsh detergents. Next, she stresses the importance of caring for your scalp. She recommends keeping the scalp clean from product build up and nourishing it with Aloe Vera and Vitamin E ointments. Another tip to prevent Alopecia is to relieve tension on your hair whenever possible. She suggests always using a heat protectant when styling, avoiding harsh hair color processes and not wearing synthetic hair clip-ins that, cause scalp irritation and flare ups. In addition to taking care of your hair, Conwell says its important to take care of your body as well. She says managing stress, adequate sleep and avoiding unhealthy, processed foods all aid in the prevention of Alopecia. For more information on Desired Extensions, visit www.desiredextensions.com. ne blistering, sticky morning in this small coastal city, its 7:00 in the morning and 17-year-old Cora Tucker is already up and working. Slim and shy in skinny blue jeans, she sports a sparkly hairclip in her tight black curls. Her small red cell phone is ever at hand. Despite her demure appearance, she’s doing a tough job not typical for a young woman. Cora manages five male workers who toil in the hot sun. They’re constructing a bathroom for their client, Limbord Bucardo, a 29-year-old agroforestry engineer. His house, which will likely take another few years to finish, as he is able to afford materials and labor, is not much more than its exterior concrete brick walls. But the shape of his bathroom is clearly in place, work that Tucker is managing, overseeing and even doing herself. She cuts rebar, mixes and pours concrete, slapping on mortar and setting bricks. Her job is to install the foundation and plumbing for a pour-flush toilet with on-site treatment, still a luxurious rarity in Bilwi, even though it is the capital of this autonomous region. Every morning, after making sure all the requisite tools and materials have been carried over from a nearby makeshift storeroom, Tucker and her crew get to work. Nothing happens unless she is on-site and in charge, an anomaly in a society where men usually hold the purse strings and power. “What we’re trying to do is have these young people learn how running their own business works. We try not to step in,” explains Sherry Dixon, who helps to promote the microfinance program that has lent Bucardo the funds for his home construction. “It’s up to them to purchase local materials and get them to the site.” The third youngest of seven children, ranging in age from two to 22, Tucker shares with them a small, windowless wooden shack in the neighborhood of San Judas. To reach her home, a one-story room with a patched, rusted tin roof and walls, she walks up a red dirt path shaded by tall palm trees. It has no running water. An uncovered, unwalled deep hand dug well sits barely 15 feet from its front door, where her infant

Elizabeth Hurley
TURNS 23 IN BREAST CANCER AWARENESS SUPPORT BY MAVIAN AROCHA-ROWE
Elizabeth “Liz” Hurley is in her 23rd year of representing Estée Lauder as a spokesmodel for Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, making it one of the world’s longest running beauty contracts. Hurley toured the United States and other parts of the world with BCA and BCRF founder Evelyn Lauder, raising funds and awareness for the Breast Cancer Research Fund. Many landmark buildings worldwide were illuminated pink in honor of their awareness efforts. In October 2009, the foundation awarded Hurley the Humanitarian Award for her fundraising efforts. Two research scientists at the Royal Marsden Hospital in the UK have grants in her name. Estée Lauder has named several special limited-edition pink lipsticks after Hurley: Elizabeth Pink and Elizabeth Shimmer Pink. During the premiere of the BCA Campaign’s first documentary, Hear Our Stories. Share Yours., in 2014, Hurley recalled Evelyn’s central motivation. “She said, ‘Women all over the world are dying of breast cancer and people aren’t talking about it, and I want to change that.’” Even after Evelyn’s passing in 2011, Hurley continues to do just that. As an actress, Hurley has made more than two dozen movies. Her personal favorites are Austin Powers with Mike Myers, Bedazzled with Brendan Fraser, and The Weight of Water with Sean Penn. She also produced several movies starring her former boyfriend, Hugh Grant - Extreme Measures and Mickey Blue Eyes, under their jointly owned Simian Films production company. The mother of one son, 15-year-old actor and model Damien Charles Hurley, she hers-magazine.com
owns a 400-acre organic farm in Gloucestershire and sells her rare breed meat to top London restaurants and local Farmer’s Markets. She launched her range of low calorie, organic snack bars in Harrods, London, and they are now sold in numerous health stores and resorts. The British actress and spokesmodel answered a few questions about her involvement in the BCRF: You’ve traveled around the globe for many years with the late Evelyn Lauder, supporting The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign. Why are you so passionate? In her lifetime, Evelyn Lauder was a vibrant, inspirational and passionate leader in the movement to raise awareness globally about the importance of breast health and early detection in saving lives. Just after I started as an Estée Lauder model in 1995, Evelyn asked me to help her with The BCA Campaign, and we became good friends. My grandmother had recently died of breast cancer, so it was a cause very close to my heart. This is a disease that knows no boundaries and does not discriminate, touching everyone in every country around the world. Thankfully, in the U.S. and Europe, breast cancer is no longer spoken about only behind closed doors or in fearful whispers. However, in many areas of the world, awareness lags dangerously far behind, and stigma and access to quality care remain critical issues. Even with extensive education, many women fail to have potentially life-saving mammograms, eat healthy foods or get sufficient rest and exercise.
