Whales migrate North from April to November Each year between April and November, Australia’s eastern coastline is a scene of spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a summer of feeding on krill in Southern Antarctic waters, these charismatic animals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth. The majority of humpbacks in Australian waters migrate north from June to August, and back towards the Southern Ocean from September to November during their annual migration of up to 10 000 kilometres. The exact timing of the migration period can vary from year to year depending on water temperature, sea ice, predation risk, prey abundance and the location of their feeding ground. At a maximum length of 16 metres, the humpback is not the largest whale found in Australian waters. This species was once only valued dead — mainly for its oil and baleen, or ‘whalebone’. Beginning in Australia shortly after

European colonisation, whaling and the export of whale products became Australia’s first primary industry. Early Australian whalers once hunted from small boats, towing their catch back for processing at shore stations which one was believed to be at Urangan on the shore at Dayman Park. The development of harpoon guns, explosive harpoons and steam-driven boats commercial whaling so efficient many whale species came very close to extinction. When southern right whales and blue whales became scarce, Australian whalers began to target humpback whales, killing approximately 8300 off the east coast between 1949 and 1962 until the International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling in the Southern Hemisphere in 1963. It is estimated that the east coast population of humpbacks was sadly little over 100 individuals.

The Bay’s other Whales Antarctic Minke Whale... Bryde's Whales... is more robust than the other large rorquals (large baleen whales). The rostrum of the Antarctic Minke Whale is very museumvictoria.com.au narrow and pointed, with a single ridge on the head. The maximum length of Antarctic Minke Whales appears to be around 9.8 m. Are not gregarious and tend to swim alone or in pairs, large feeding groups of up to 400 individuals may form. Minke whales are known to be curious, often approaching boats from a distance. Antarctic Minke Whales probably do not migrate as far north as Dwarf Minke Whales but this species does undergo extensive migration between the summer Antarctic feeding grounds and winter sub-tropical to tropical breeding grounds. Mature Antarctic Minke Whales feed primarily on the Antarctic Krill. www.environment.gov.au
Pilot Whales... have a robust body with a thick tail stock. The dorsal fin is wide, broad based, falcate and set well forward on the body. Occurring in tropical and warmtemperate waters worldwide. The Long-finned Pilot museumvictoria.com.au Whale is widely recorded in colder waters off southern Australia. The Short-Finned Pilot Whales reaches physical maturity at approximately 17 years and is more than 5 m in length, a maximum age of 46 years. while females are smaller at 4.8 m and reach 63 years. Feeding mainly on squid, cuttlefish, octopus and some fish. www.environment.gov.au
are the second smallest of the (baleen whales). The rostrum is V-shaped but has three parallel ridges between the blowhole and nostril tip. museumvictoria.com.au And can grow to 14.6 m (males) or 15.6 m (females). Bryde's Whales are not gregarious and mostly swim alone or in pairs. Bryde's Whale is considered to be a fairly opportunistic feeder, readily consuming whatever shoaling prey is available, such as pilchard, anchovy, sardine, mackerel, herring and other schooling fish. www.environment.gov.au
Southern Right... Whales are large baleen whales with a less streamlined shape than balaenopterids like Humpback Whales. They grow to a museumvictoria.com.au maximum length of 17.5 m and weight of 80 t, with mature females often slightly larger than males. The majority of are uniformly black in colour, no dorsal fin. Thought to be solitary during migration, or accompanied by a dependent calf or occasionally a yearling offspring. Forming large groups in breeding areas. These have been recorded in the coastal waters of all Australian states with the exception of the Northern Territory. Krill is a major food source and require adequate supplies of food to accumulate energy reserves that is essential for migration and breeding. Depletion of krill through over harvesting may be a potential future threat for the Australian population of Southern Right Whales. www.environment.gov.au
POST - WHALING RECOVERY By 2100 some Southern Hemisphere whale species will not have reached half their pre-whaling numbers, while other species are expected to recover by 2050. The ndings are part of new CSIRO and UQ research, which looks at the interaction of historical whaling, food availability and future climate changes to predict whale numbers to 2100. University of Queensland and CSIRO PhD student Viv Tulloch, afliated with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions, said this was the rst time researchers had used this approach to predict future Southern Hemisphere whale numbers. “We predict that Antarctic Blue, Southern Right and Fin whales will be at less than half their pre-exploitation numbers by 2100 because of slow growth rates and heavy historical whaling,” Ms Tulloch said. “Although humpbacks are currently at 33 per cent of their pre-whaling numbers, we predict they will make a full recovery by 2050.” Southern Right whales, which were reported to have declined to 300 before anti-whaling laws were established, raise one calf every two to three years, compared to humpback whales which generally raise a calf per year.

Identifying depression
The seven Signs identified by AMA Queensland to help indicate whether a person is having difficulty are: 1• Complaints of continued poor sleep with ongoing nightmares. 2• Observations a person is easily overwhelmed, tearful or fragile. 3• The use of drugs or alcohol to suppress intense emotions or to try and achieve sleep. 4• A pattern of withdrawing from family and friends and not engaging in day to day discussions that generally allow people to slowly debrief. 5• Problems performing at work such as struggling to concentrate on the job at hand. 6• Startling easily and declining invitations for social engagements and other usually pleasurable activities 7• Increased or unreasonable irritability with family, workmates or friends. AMA Queensland Councillor Dr Sharmila Biswas said, “Generally these signs can be easily observed and may be a useful starting point when talking to someone you care about.” Queenslanders in need of advice or support should consult their local GP. To locate your closest AMA GP, download the free AMA Find a Doctor App. Alternatively the service can be found online at www.amafindadoctor.com.au
Maintain a healthy weight Australia is facing an obesity epidemic. The scientific evidence suggests that one of the contributing issues is the replacement of healthy, nutritious food with energy dense food with minimal nutritional value in Australian dietary patterns. Health professionals working with people trying to achieve a healthy diet now have access to updated scientific evidence about the best dietary patterns for Australians of all ages. “To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, Australians need to balance physical activity with amounts of nutritious foods and drinks that meet energy needs. We all need to limit energy rich nutrient poor ‘junk foods’ that are high in saturated fat, added salt or sugar,” NHMRC CEO Professor Warwick Anderson said. A stringent review of around 55,000 scientific publications shows that the scientific evidence has strengthened about the link between diet and health. “The evidence that links a healthy diet and reducing the risk of chronic health problems such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity and some cancers is stronger. There is also stronger evidence about the kind of foods that can increase the risk of weight gain and health problems,” Professor Anderson said. The revised Infant Feeding Guidelines have been issued. Prepared by experts in paediatric nutrition, nutrition research, nutrition communication, public health and primary health, these Guidelines will help healthcare workers support parents in giving infants the best nutrition and start to life. The Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Infant Feeding Guidelines are a joint initiative of NHMRC and the Department of Health and Ageing.

Healthy and balanced
Asian food is one of the most delicious types of cuisine available to enjoy today. The wonderful thing about this food is that it tastes so good. Visit any of these restaurants and enjoy this mouthwatering cuisine. Other great aspects about Asian cooking are the healthy benefits this food offers. Very often vegetables are balanced with entrees and fried dishes come with steamed dishes or soups. The majority of people believe that Asian cuisine is healthy and well balanced. The different types of Asian food that we love to enjoy include the following: crab, cabbage, carrots, duck, tofu, cucumber, bean sprouts, bamboo, eggs, chicken, beef, glutinous rice, mushrooms, ginger, watercress and sesame oil. So visit one of our local restaurants as advertised in our guide today!

A place for the whole family

Burrum River Caravan Park Large Powered & Tent Sites-Cabins Peaceful, quiet place to stay Pool, Fishing, Crabbing

Your Hosts: Trudie & Phil
141 Old Bruce Highway Howard
Ph: 1800 649 721 or 4129 4859 www.burrumrivercaravanpark.com Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20 km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

KAWUNGAN STATE SCHOOL An Independent Public School Our school sits atop the beautiful hinterland of Hervey Bay not 3 km from the sparkling ocean. It's environmentally pleasing grounds and gardens are often the talk of visitors to the school. We pride ourselves on a small environmental foot print. Opening in 1991 the school quickly gained a reputation for its achievement of excellence, in particular its Excellence in Music program and the success of its choirs and bands. 25 years later that reputation still exists and is being built on by our professional staff. Reading and Numeracy are of course our highest priority. Outcomes for our students in these areas are excellent. Of most interest is the 'distance travelled' by each particular student in their learning journey. Our P&C association does an amazing job of bringing our community together and in raising much needed funds for the school. Mother's and Father's Day, school discos, parent workshops, parent café, uniform shop and tuckshop are all initiatives successfully implemented in the school. The school caters to a broad range of students including those with special needs. Inclusivity is a hallmark of our school. Our vision statement is, “Helping Each Other Achieve Excellence”. Interested in enrolling? Come and have a chat.

Ghosts from 19th Century
The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night. From the 1840s to well after 1900, Maryborough and Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) and others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders and Oxley had charted the coastline but the arrival of E.T. Aldridge and his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool and other primary produce and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. The Wharf precinct still has many of its original buildings.

Bargara sits along the spectacular coastline of Bundaberg. With beautiful beaches, stunning rocky coastlines and friendly locals and a climate equal to Hawaii, this area is becoming one of Queensland’s favourite holiday destinations to our many domestic and international visitors or home to those looking for that "sea change" lifestyle change. Found at the beginning of the Great Barrier Reef, this Southern Great Barrier Reef area can offer spectacular shore diving and snorkelling, world class Dive Facilities as well as access to Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot island. Bargara has a choice of dining experiences: The Lakes Taverns, upmarket dining at Kacys Restaurant or Kellys Beach Resort or many other restaurants and cafes. Witness an ancient life cycle of the animal kingdom, as majestic sea turtles make their journey to the shore to lay their eggs. Delight at the sight of their young, hatching months later, and making their perilous journey to the sea. Mon Repos is special! It supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and has the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region. The success of nesting and hatching turtles at Mon Repos is critical for the survival of the endangered loggerhead turtle. At this globally-significant site you can learn all about these extraordinary animals and the conservation and research programs that are protecting them at the turtle centre, and even have a turtle encounter like very few others in the world. Visit the home to Australia's Iconic Rum The Bundaberg Distilling Company (BDC), Australia's most awarded rum distillery and the home of Bundaberg Rum, has opened the doors to its new Visitor Experience following an $8.5m upgrade. Marking one of the most significant investments in the distillery's 127-year history, the new Visitor Experience is a testament to the ongoing popularity of Bundaberg Rum and the brands' commitment to the Bundaberg region. The Visitor Experience now offers two new tour experiences in addition to the famous Distillery tour – The Bundaberg Rum Museum Experience and a Blend Your Own Rum Experience. There is also an expanded retail experience and bar area where visitors can purchase exclusive and limited edition products only available from the distillery. Bundaberg Rum Museum Experience Inside the Museum's self-guided tour, six 75,000 litre oak vats, that have previously matured thousands of litres of Bundaberg's finest rums, have been emptied and rebuilt, allowing visitors to walk through them in a unique sensory experience that showcases the proud and rich history behind Australia's favourite rum. Blend Your Own Rum Experience In an Australian first for a rum distillery, visitors now have the opportunity to craft their own personalised Bundaberg Rum blend from a selection of premium rums that have never before been released to the general public. During the experience, participants will spend time with two expert rum blending guides who will teach the group the art of tasting rum straight from the barrel. These premium rums have been aged in small oak barrels that have previously matured Port, Sherry, Bourbon, Scotch and aged Bundaberg Rum to give each blend of rum a unique flavour. The new Visitors Centre will also be the new home to the annual Spirit of Bundaberg Festival, the next one of which will take place on 14 October 2017. WHAT ’ s ON! Hatching between Nov & Feb Just 14 Kilometres from Bundaberg or just five minutes drive from Bargara is Mon Repos. The area is a Conservation Park designed to protect the turtles, ensure their ongoing use of the area and provide opportunities for turtle watching. Loggerhead Turtles are an endangered species and access to the beach is limited during the season. Rangers conduct guided walks each night. Loggerhead, Green and Flatback turtles come ashore from November to February and it is an amazing sight to see these huge creatures heaving their way up the beach to find a safe spot to dig a nest and lay their eggs. Around six to eight weeks later the tiny hatchlings may be seen emerging from their sandy nests heading towards the sea (from early January until late March). Turtle hatchling at Mon Repos beach. Welcome to K’gari (Fraser Island) Traditional home of the Butchulla people • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or P aradise. • Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef • Fraser island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide. • Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presume it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape. • Captain Willliam Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found there way ashore and the death of Captain J . Fraser. • 1863 The first Kauri logs where punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu. • Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers. • Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914. • Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935. • A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes some as much as 70 metres above sea level.
Great Sandy Marine Park Marine Park zones and designated areas have been chosen within the Great Sandy Marine Park to protect the area’s features, wildlife and habitat. Great Sandy Strait - from Dayman Point - Sandy Point (near Hervey Bay) to Tin Can Bay in the south - is a Ramsar wetland of international importance. It has been declared a shorebird designated area within the marine park to protect migratory shorebirds.

Travel through with respect and care Traditional Owners the Butchulla people have a long and ongoing relationship with K’gari (Fraser Island). In order to acknowledge the important connection to country of the Butchulla people, the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing’s (NPRSR) Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) urges visitors to treat the country they are travelling through with respect and Syd care. www.ozmagic3.homestead.com James
Accessing Fraser Island
Fraser Island lies, east of Maryborough and Hervey Bay. High clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are required as the island consists entirely of sand. All-wheel-drive vehicles and caravans are not recommended. Vehicle access is by barge (ferry) only. QPWS vehicle access and camping permits are required before you enter. Access from the South. Turn off the Bruce Highway and drive to Rainbow Beach—about 240km or a three-hour drive north of Brisbane. From the town centre, head to Inskip Point along Clarkson Drive. This takes about 15 minutes. Commercial barges operate from around 6am to 5.30pm every day and carry vehicles and walk-on passengers to Hook Point, on the southern tip of the island. Charges apply, but bookings are not necessary. From the North Turn off the Bruce Highway at Maryborough and head towards Hervey Bay. Turn right at the onto Booral Road and follow the signs to River Heads or Fraser Island barges. This is about 300km or approximately 4 hours drive from
Long-distance migratory shorebirds gather in great numbers at critical sites along the island’s sandy shores and throughout the Great Sandy Strait. Shorebirds feed in the intertidal zone at low tide, day and night. Long-distance migratory birds must gain sufcient weight in preparation for their northern hemisphere breeding season. All sea and shorebirds must rest and feed as their energy budgets are critically tight. These birds require protection. Even one disturbance can put birds at risk by burning energy crucial for surviving tough migrations and weather conditions. Constant rising and settling from disturbances contributes to exhaustion, leaving these birds more vulnerable to death. Give all birds a wide berth. Observe shorebirds and seabirds from a distance.

Caution crossing creeks Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks. Large volumes of water create steep creek banks. Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries. Before crossing any creek, walk through it, if safe, to check the depth of water and softness of sand. Never stop your vehicle midstream; your vehicle may sink or stall.

Towing safety tips First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working. * Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job? * Trailer or tow bar weights - check your car's handbook for the maximum weights allowed. * Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the car's mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars. * Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your car's handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too. * Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard. * Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights. * Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move. Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it. * Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc.) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly. * Suspension - Towing puts extra strain on a car's suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing. * Reversing - There are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner. When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears.

Begin your adventure Located right at the mouth of the iconic Mary River in Hervey Bay’s South is one of the region’s best kept secrets. River Heads is a small peninsula separating the Mary and Susan River systems from the Great Sandy Straits and has some of the best views of Fraser Island and the Straits available anywhere in the region. Its natural elevation of up to around 50m above sea level means there are plenty of vantage points to view the surrounding landscapes as far as Bauple Mountains just north of Gympie. And despite being surrounded by water has remained flood free over the past years when the Mary River has shown its true power. Its unique location makes it the perfect spot to begin your adventure on Fraser Island with two vehicular barges servicing Kingfisher Bay Resort and Wanggoolba Creek on the Islands Western side and its close proximity to the Fraser Coast Airport. The waters surrounding River Heads are an anglers paradise with most estuary fish including large Barramundi and Salmon available on the Western side and reef fish on the Eastern side between Fraser Island. The close knit community that live in River Heads take great pride in their area and wouldn’t live anywhere else. The local shopping village provides everything needed with a supermarket, bottle shop, medical centre with pharmacy, café and Kingfisher Bay passenger terminal and is the best place to stock up on supplies before hitting the island.
